Trump Signs GOP Tax Scam Bill Into Law [VIDEO]

ABC News reports:

President Donald Trump signed the $1.5 trillion rewrite of the tax code into law at the White House on Friday capping off a victory lap before leaving to spend the holidays in Mar-a-Lago. “This is the bill, right here, we’re very proud of it,” Trump said according to a pool report.

The measure, known as the the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, is being hailed by the GOP as the biggest legislative achievement for Trump and congressional Republicans. After the bill’s passage, Trump celebrated with Republican lawmakers at the White House’s South Lawn.

  • Randy Ellicott

i thought they were waiting till the new year to push off some medicare cuts or something, or am i getting this confused with some other a##hattery?

    • Ninja0980

They were but Trump isn’t smart enough to know to wait that long.
Won’t some people getting paycheck money back be surprised to see Medicare cuts happen at the same time.

          It’s small and shriveled.

    • kirby7771

I was wondering the same thing.

    • Treant

Well, yeah, but poor and sick? What are they gonna do, live long enough to vote in November?

I don’t think so, so it’s a safe move for the Republicans to make.

      • Uncle Mark

Except the poor and sick do have family & friends.

One of my friends was a staunch Republican. Hated the thought of Obama “messing with insurance that might affect his PPO.” He bitched about his brother having to buy insurance, and having to take a 2nd job, because his company didn’t want to pay for insurance and therefore cut his hours. Then his brother was diagnosed with cancer, but had just signed up for the ACA, and was able to undergo lifesaving treatment WITHOUT going bankrupt nor losing the house. A lot of his Republican family became Democrats that year.

        • Chucktech

Yeah, funny how those death bed conversions work, isn’t it?

      • Silver Badger

The poor will always be with us. The sick may just get sicker. There’s always hope!

As small business owners, we’ve started laying plans for mid-2018 and beyond anticipating the economic impact of this tax scam.
Cutting back severely in production and possibly modification of stock and hours of operation.
We bled our own funds heavily into the business during the last recession in order to remain open. We just can’t afford to do that again, sadly. Will be a loss for our small area here.

  • ConvivialVisits

Wait, I thought this was delayed so the would have time to pass a waiver on the automatic Medicare cuts that would happen from this deficit-busting bill?

Does this mean that Congress is passing the waiver before the new year? Or that the waiver can be passed in January before the cuts go into effect?

    • Treant

Or they just lied, there are no waivers intended, and Medicare will be thrown to the wolves?

    • Dramphooey

You’re overthinking this. Anything that involves Trump that includes “thought” is overthinking whatever it is.

    • Chucktech

The cuts would happen in January of the following year the legislation is signed into law. That’s, like, 10 days?? If they had waited until January they would have had all of 2018 to fix their shit in the sandbox. Now they have to plead with Dems to get 60 votes in the Senate to fix this.

    • David Walker

Pass it before the new year? Please. Their holidays started yesterday. There’s no way McRyan would call a special session. I mean, yes, they are certifiable Grinches, but still. Of course, some of the honorable members might welcome the opportunity to escape from their constituents for a few days.

    • RobynWatts

He really wanted that *win* before Christmas, didn’t he?

      • Chucktech

He saw some “fake news” on the teevee saying Trump was not “keeping his promise” of signing this as a “Christmas present” to ‘Murikuh so he signed it in a big huff. Little fuckin’ baby.

    • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

I thought the same Matt, but it is possible they may pass some other new law to prevent the automatic cuts to medicare from kicking in. If they don’t, it certainly will make the midterms way more favorable to our side.

      • Lantor

Didn’t you hear Ryan say that those laws were arcane about 20 times in the interviews leading up to this?

        • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

You say that with sarcasm? I can’t watch Ryan without wanting to take a baseball bat to my TV screen. Arcane laws must still be followed unless they pass a waiver.

      • Chucktech

It’s going to require 60 votes in the Senate. The Dems will probably do the right thing and not block this waiver.

        • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

Great trap, because if the Dems do block it, then the right can hang the entire tax scam on the Dems.

HOWEVER the Dems could for a change have some decent messaging and say “We are forced to waive long-standing laws requiring fiscal responsibility in order to minimize the damage of the Republican’s tax scam. This is one of the many dangers of a bill rushed through in the middle of the night, that most Republican Congress members didn’t even read before voting. This is just more proof that the Republicans are incapable of competent governing”.

            They already did.

        • Menergy

my continuing Medicare advantage plan health care premiums just jumped from $0 to $37/mo starting January. Not a big deal for me, I’m also covered by military retired veteran medical coverage (TRICARE for Life, usable at same physicians/labs/hospitals as the Medicare advantage policy, which pays the billed costs not covered by Medicare’s plan. But still – the Medicare advantage health care insurance plan I have and continue (Presbyterian) with was zero cost up til now.

I do also get some pittance from Social Security (around $123/mo !!!) although I paid into it for 23 years. This covered the Medicare health care plan premium in the past.

I can go to VA hospitals for care too — but that is a mixed bag of benefit, depending on the VA hospital reputation….

          • Chucktech

So, your premiums skyrocketed by infinity…

And I don’t think the cuts to Medicare kick in until it’s verified that the new cuts aren’t bringing in the magical new economic growth, and resulting tax dollars–so maybe two years.

  • Ranger One

I detect buyer’s remorse in his statement. When he said that Democrats will regret it, they are already regretting it, I think he was talking about the Republicans. “Oh shit, what did we just do.”

And if that dog smells something that might hurt his baby-ass feelings, he will react with propaganda, toward it. He is afraid of 2018. He knows it is a rich-person’s bill and has started with his Orwelling speech already: black is white, white is black. Democrats are regretting, the middle class is getting relief, the bill hurts me financially, blah, blah blah.

What stopped me was that I couldn’t decide what music I wanted to be the last I heard. A while later, while still considering it, I discovered (yea, google) that method no longer works reliably because of catalytic converters and other anti-pollution requirements. • Chucktech

          Really. That’s our president.

    • Nope…there was an extension buried deep in the deal to keep the govt operating. so it is 2019.
      Fuckers.

  • lymis

Okay Donnie. You bought it. Now you own it.

    • Chucktech

      Bigly.

  • Mike C

I feel bad for anyone planning to retire in the next 4-8 yeras because we know what happens when the Republican get their tax cuts.

    • Lantor

They get their social safety net cuts too.

      • you think that would survive getting thru the senate?
or will they need 60 votes?

        • Lantor

Sorry, I was being snarky. No, but if the automatic cuts kick in, there isn’t much that can be done.

  • BobSF_94117

I read somewhere that he was going to wait and sign it next year so as not to trigger automatic cuts to Medicare (or something… it’s all a blur these days).

Not yet. I hope his dog is ok and the vet just gives him a steroid shot or something.

        • whollyfool

Yes. Been a bad enough year and we’ve already lost too many furbabies.: /

Thanks…. Last night he was really worried about his dog.

          • whollyfool

Sorry, working today and so I’m hit or miss….

He didn’t say specifically, just that he was taking his dog to the vet today and was afraid he’d be returning alone. 🙁 His dog is getting up there in years. (Like me.)

          • Ragnar Lothbrok

            aaawww…Hope it turns out ok.

Any Republican who ever again whines about the deficit and national debt should be duct-taped to an oak chair and beaten liberally about the head and shoulders with a billy club.

Must be nice to be a billionaire who gets to write and sign his own tax laws and a stupid constituency that trusts so blindly that it thinks he doesn’t have to show his tax returns,

It’s time for all of us to phone our representatives and demand the government pay back all the money they borrowed, more like stole, from Social Security

Dear President Dumbass: Congratulations! You have moved the pain of your new tax fiasco into 2018, before the midterm elections, ensuring that at least some of your base will recognize that your much-touted bill is a cheat and a lie. May they all vote out the people who voted for your “Christmas present.”

    • Scout

What is the pain? I thought it benefitted most people for the first couple years and then caused the pain.

      • thatotherjean

Automatic spending cuts to a whole bunch of Federal programs, including a small cut to Medicare. A huge number of people will be affected in some way.

        • Scout

Thanks for answering. I’m not upvoting the painful legislation, but I appreciate the information.

      • Lantor

Did they fix the state/local tax loophole? That will hurt some donors in red parts of CA and NY. Plus, I’m sure insurance premiums will go through the roof. Just this year, mine jumped $250/mth.

        • Scout

Thanks for answering . . . I’m not upvoting the painful legislation. Sorry about your insurance premiums.

          • Lantor

I appreciate that. I’m hoping I won’t have to keep the insurance for long. I’ll be starting a new job that offers insurance next month. But, it rocked my world to see it jump that much. I didn’t know if I passed an age bracket or what (turned 44 this year).

      • J Ascher

Cuts to Social Security and Medicare are now on tap for 2018 instead of 2019.

  • William

Well fuck, there went the year for planning.

  • Rebecca Gardner

This is awesome! The stupid fuck didn’t wait until 2018 to sign it so he basically just killed the Republican Party.

    • Lazycrockett

yeah what is up with that?

      • clay

        Bannon?

    • Chucktech

…unless the Dems save them. Unfortunately, they probably will since actual Americans will suffer if they don’t.

I’m truly on the fence about it.

      • David Walker

As long as it’s not barbed wire or electric, enjoy. Can be a good place to think.

    • Scout

What will happen because he signed it early that kills the Republican party? I thought the benefits would be good for a few years for everyone .. . .was it something else in the bil?

  • whollyfool

Ok I’m not in a very optimistic mood. But I did hear a folk song by John Craigie yesterday and it had a line in it that gave me some hope….

    Donald Trump:
    Days in Office: 336
    Legislative “triumphs”: 1
Deplorable tweets: we stopped counting at 200
Times he’s gone golfing: approaching 90
Number of indictments: 2, so far
Approval ratings: 35% and lowering faster than temperatures in a snow storm
Temper Tantrums: Daily or so far?
Number of lies: 1,318 in his first 263 days in office, and counting

But he’s the “best president in history”

2016 was a terrible year owing to the deaths of many famous people, mostly musicians, from my younger days. 2017 has been a horrible year owing to the fucking moron and the bought and paid for congress. 2018 will be a maddeningly sad year for those who brought this on themselves and for those of us who are simply caught in the cross-hairs.

“The measure, known as the the [sic] Tax Cuts and Jobs Act . . . “

No, ABC News, it’s not, not anymore. Now it’s known as ‘An Act to provide for reconciliation pursuant to titles II and V of the concurrent resolution on the budget for fiscal year 2018.’ Because McConnell doesn’t actually know how to work the Senate rules.

Today when Trump arrives at Mar-a-Lago, he will have officially spent over 20% of his presidency at his golf courses, wasting $91,655,424 in taxpayer dollars on his travels to them. Playing golf, drinking a dozen or more diet cokes a day, lounging around like he’s in retirement. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/15264236d9c7c5c556fae2532aae5f9cad14e8bfdf3e192b6a84a8b58f2c58b1.jpg

OT: Donald Trump to build his wall in Ireland amid climate change ‘irony’ claims

“Protesters were quick to highlight the irony of a president, who is sceptical about climate change, building a wall in an attempt to manage coastal erosion.
The original application cited global warming and rising seas as justification for the wall.”

Citizens United Fund Donations Explode for 2018…..

  • I kept telling everyone he wouldn’t have the patience to wait until Jan 1st to sign it, because that would help avoid the automatic spending cuts targeting Medicare/Medicaid and other vital programs, and thereby help the Republicans in the midterms.

And he didn’t. Of course he didn’t. Because he has the impulse control of a toddler and can be manipulated by anyone he sees.

  • GanymedeRenard

    And a happy new year. / s

  • Does that mean the cuts for social security and medicare are coming in 2018 and not 2019? If that happens, *maybe* there really will be Democrats taking control of the House and Senate for 2018.

    • TuuxKabin

      Gawd I hope it’s not a maybe.

      • There is a possibility that the GOP will push a “waiver” bill to delay the implementation of automatic cuts to social security and medicare, and other fixes to their hasty enactment. But the Democrats will still have a very strong argument for “repeal and replace.”

Certain ideas for the replacement bill:

tax at 100% the income of corporate executives from any form of compensation that exceeds 40 times that which would result from a full time salary of their lowest paid employee (including the lowest paid employee of suppliers and contractors) – this would essentially cap compensation drastically and even more so for corporations that have moved production or call centers or have suppliers who use overseas labor being paid slave wages.

corporate profit distributions should be taxed at the same rate as wages. However there would be a full exemption for profits that get plowed back into research and development or in building new factories and facilities. Return on capital should not be given more value than labor.

Business does better with well-educated employees – a surtax would be imposed sufficient to cover college tuition and to pay off all student debt. (Student debt already paid off would also be refunded via tax credits)

Medical insurance would be paid by taxes rather than via premiums.

In the interest of simplifying bureaucracy, all income redistribution programs should be folded into a Negative Income Tax administered by the IRS, with the idea that all americans should be able to live in dignity rather than ion poverty, to be able to afford decent housing, food, and clothing for their families.

I have a lot more where that came from – and if necessary, it’s the military budget that should have to take a hit.

  • infmom

Oh goody. I guess I better not spend much on holiday stuff because my SS check is going to go down in January.

    • TuuxKabin

      And I just got a $4 raise notice, effective next month . . .

By signing the bill this year, Trump guarantees that the Medicare cuts will go into effect in 2018, not 2019 as intended, just in time for the mid-term elections! What a brilliant move – not.
