Todd Starnes Demands Arrest Of Memphis City Council After Slick Action To Remove Confederate Statues

USA Today reports:

The city of Memphis sold two public parks containing Confederate monuments to a nonprofit Wednesday in a massive, months-in-the-planning operation to take the statues down overnight.

The City Council unanimously approved the sale of Health Science Park, home of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, and its easement on Fourth Bluff Park, home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, for $1,000 each to Memphis Greenspace Inc. Fourth Bluff, or Memphis Park, is owned by a group called The Overton Heirs.

The sale — which is almost certain to result in a lawsuit from statue supporters — allows Greenspace to legally do what the city of Memphis cannot: Remove the statues from their visible perches in the parks, Chief Legal Officer Bruce McMullen said. He said they would be stored in an undisclosed location for security reasons.

After looking at the youtube likes of Berta, I think it’s probably another stolen pic.

        • PickyPecker

I used to sortof enjoy when you portrayed an addle-brained old woman personae. This new one….is just annoying.
I suggest that perhaps your next avatar impersonation should be one that
          1) understands the topic/viewpoint of which it speaks, as ‘Cady’ cleary does not.
          2) can use more than 4 to 5 buzzwords (currently: cis, cretin, able-sized, thick-skull, triggered….well, you know the rest all too well).

          Chew on that.

          • Do you say these things while looking in the mirror and basking in your toxic masculinity?

Why does Todd Starnes hate local government home-rule and private property rights?

  • BlackGayAthetist

    Dear Todd,

The hate and dishonesty is what was symbolized by these statues by people who can’t get over the fact that the South was treasonous and lost the Civi War.

Look, it’s every Jewish mother’s dream. That her son should be worshiped as god.

My mother wished it for me. And look what came of it.

        feeling guilt now…

        • MT YVR

Oh but it’s fine. As long as my son is happy, may he always be blessed. I should have a son that isn’t? Of course not. So let him be happy. It is all a mother could wish for, why should she think him being a god and worshiped would be better than married to that man. Of course they are comfortable, they are so happy. I will wait in the dark until they should remember me, but it’s good. A mother should always support her son no matter his decisions, waiting until he remembers what she gave to him. But I’m happy. I’m happy here in the dark, alone by the phone that he never calls because I know he’s happy with his life. I raised him to make his choices and he has. What mother wouldn’t be proud. I sustain myself on that.

(prim folding of hands in lap)

Actually it was Yeshua [Joshua] ben Yusef [son of Joseph]. The thing I always find amusing about that is Christians claim Jesus had an ancestral tie to King David but he could only have had that if he actually were Joseph’s natural son which given that whole virgin birth myth is not the case.

Think of the fundraising possibilities. All you need is the statue and a sledgehammer. A dollar a whack, hopefully for a good cause.

      • .
Dynamite, C-4 would produce too much shrapnel to allow us to get close enough to fully relish the destruction.

What we need is a long strip of linear shaped charge — what the USAF uses to slice up airplane fuselages.

Wrap the statuary head to foot with the LSC, half a foot to a foot between loops.

Step back and admire the sections tumble.

      • horatiohornblat

Just like the Russian Communists did in the video clip above.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

      She got off lightly.

    • Bob Conti

I think I could watch that all day.

    • JCF

      Such a GLORIOUS video!

      • horatiohornblat

That was not executed by Americans.

    • perversatile

I’d recommend melting the statues all the way down and casting manhole covers or drainage ditch grills, something that would allow for their heritage
to serve as a functioning part of modern society.
It’s something we could all enjoy.

    • ColdCountry

Unlike That Symbol, some of the statures are works of art. I have no problem keeping them in an appropriate place – like a museum – but I think it would be nice if they ceased to identify them as particular people. Just call them artistic and let the identity of the person fade into obscurity.

  • Clive Johnson

Starnes, you’re a fucking irredeemable moron.

The great majority of these statues represent nothing more than revisionist history. They are themselves the very erasure, the lie, that Starnes claims their removal represents.

And, let’s put aside the utter stupidity of thinking that somehow we’ll all forget history if we don’t have statues around.

The most important history is that which is the learned lessons of history contained in the minds, values, laws and institutions of people. Ironically, it’s people like Starnes who continually militate against historical truth-telling in the American school curriculum, preferring their childlike patriotic curriculums.

The violence done to American history is that we don’t have anywhere near enough symbolic representations of civil rights heroes, underground railroad leaders, the horrific costs of slavery and racism, and more.

  • FAEN

Take ALL the traitorous statues down and build ‘The Museum of American Traitors’ to house them in already.

If anyone is waging jihad on American history it would be the people who put the statues up on the first place. The confederacy lost and Starnes should get over it already.

In 1945 we took down the monuments built by the losers, and for 70 years Europe has resisted the urge to put them back up again. Apparently that makes them ‘anti-white’… but really it just makes them civilised people.

  • WTHella

One of those statues was of General Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate General who was a slave trader before the war and committed horrific atrocities during the war. His troops killed hundreds of mostly black soldiers fighting for the U.S. at the Fort Pillow Massacre, after they surrendered, burying some alive and shooting civilians in the back as they fled. After the war General Forrest became the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. He was also a born again Christian later becoming a pillar of Memphis society. His statue was erected after 1900 during the Jim Crow era.
This is one of his business adverts before the war.

Memphis was innovative, thought it through, and then brazen about the whole thing. Who, us? We sold the parks with the statues, go ask them. I like the whole FOAD attitude involved. The Tennessee legislature is already promising an investigation, the Sons of the Confederacy is threatening to sue (for what?), and the usual suspects are whining.

Hopefully the pricks in charge of the TN Legislature don’t fuck around too much with funding for it.

  • ColdCountry

But I bet he had no problem with the contortions they went through to “save” the Mount Soledad cross.

    • EdA

Funny you should mention that. These sham sales, aided and abetted by the unlamented Antonin Scalia, who tried to claim that the cross isn’t necessarily reflective of Christianity, have been a prime method by which Christianist Fundamentalists have tried to impose their beliefs onto public property.

  • Pip

There’s a lesson to learn here. Don’t fuck with Memphis. They always find a way. Give it up Miss Todd. This one’s a done deal, and completely legal.

    • EdA

It may be a done deal, for the time being, but it’s not legitimate, even though it represents only decent people copying what the fundies keep trying to do.

      • Pip

The parks were sold to a private company, legally. It’s not the first time that’s happened, since cities don’t always have a budget to upkeep parks any more. A private company does not have to legally request permissions to remove any statues or art from their properties. They only need the permits to do the work, which were granted to them. They do have to be careful with the removal or remarking of the grave. The removal of the grave will need to be approved once a proper new burial site is chosen. Relocation of grave sites are permitted all the time due to construction or purchase of properties with them.

Hi. I do understand the principle of “public-private partnerships,” which in many (probably most) cases with respect to parks is both necessary and desirable. But I’m not thrilled with the sale of public property primarily to avoid compliance with the Constitution. Even in a good cause – since so often it has been done to support what I consider to be bad ones.

          • Tempus Fuggit

What violation of the Constitution do you perceive, please?

          • EdA

First Amendment. No establishment of religion. As exemplified by crosses, shrines, Nativity scenes, etc. on government property. Judge Roy Moore’s sticking his Ten Commandments in the courthouse one of the most blatant examples. Courts have held that it is not permissible to just sell a small area around the religious emblem that’s in a park and claim, poof, the government is no longer responsible, not unless at the least there’s some clear demarkation.

          • Tempus Fuggit

Okeh, are you arguing that the removed statues in this case were religious in nature?

          • EdA

No, God no. But the principle of trying to evade the requirements of a law by transferring public property to a private group, even a non-profit one, would be largely the same.

          • Tempus Fuggit

Thanks for clarifying. I could maybe get onside with your argument if the statues were at all religious in any real sense, but they’re not. That difference means there was nothing even a little bit illegal or sketchy about what Memphis did.

So, when city councils and legislators sell public land to private groups so they can put up Ten Commandment monuments and crosses, that’s ok, but it’s not in this case?

In any event, kudos to the Memphis City Council for their ingenious work around of the law that the white nationalist Republicans in the statehouse passed trying to keep the monuments to the glories of the Confederacy and the Great Cause (slavery) in place.

Please don’t buy into the stereotype that all of us in Tennessee are red-neck bigots. There are a good number of us that consider the statues to be a “white-washed” version of history. Like other states, our large cities (like Memphis and Nashville) are “blue” and progressive. Because of gerrymandering our state legislature is very “red” and doesn’t accurately represent the political makeup of the state.

But they tell black folks to get over slavery..,..

  • recore

Only America would get their panties all in a bunch over the removal of statues of men who were traitors and lost the war. Get over it starnes.

  • .
Watch Starnes’ head explode a month from now when the parks are donated back to the city.

Todd’s nothing more than a hate monger.
