Trump Lies That Obamacare Has Now Been “Repealed”

The Associated Press reports:

President Donald Trump has prematurely declared “Obamacare” dead and displayed a misunderstanding of where the money comes from to make the health law work.

A look at his remarks Wednesday about the tax plan he will soon sign into law and its effect on President Barack Obama’s health insurance overhaul:

TRUMP: “Obamacare has been repealed in this bill.” THE FACTS: It hasn’t. The tax plan ends fines for people who don’t carry health insurance. That’s a major change but far from the dismantling of the law.

Other marquee components of Obama’s law remain, such as the Medicaid expansion serving low-income adults, protections that shield people with pre-existing medical conditions from being denied coverage or charged higher premiums, income-based subsidies for consumers buying individual health insurance policies, the requirement that insurers cover “essential” health benefits, and the mandate that larger employers provide coverage to their workers or face fines.

Talking Points Memo reports:

President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed the Republican tax overhaul has “essentially repealed Obamacare” but said officials “didn’t want to bring it up” until the legislation had already passed.

“The individual mandate is being repealed. When the individual mandate is being repealed, that means Obamacare is being repealed because they get their money from the individual mandate,” Trump said at the start of a cabinet meeting.

“We didn’t want to bring it up. I told people specifically, ‘Be quiet with the fake news media because I don’t want them talking too much about it,’” Trump said. “Because I didn’t know how people would — but now that it’s approved I can say the individual mandate on health care, where you had to pay not to have insurance, okay, think of that one, you pay not to have insurance. The individual mandate has been repealed.”

Nah… Even without the mandates, there are still the rules that insurance companies must follow like the pre-existing conditions rules, rules on maximum out-of-pocket per year, no lifetime limit, things like that.

They will want to get rid of those too as soon as they think they can.

  • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

He touts ‘repeal’ now, but when eliminating the mandate causes rates to skyrocket and people to terminate coverage, watch how quick he blames the Dems for ‘failing Obamacare’.

Donny, you claim repeal, you OWN IT when people die from lack of healthcare. You evil, souless bastard, we know you are more concerned about a ‘win’ and your pathetic, desperate craving for approval then the literal lives of Americans.

I’m sure that was the plan all along.

There are limits to what they could do under the reconciliation rules they were operating under. But killing the mandate will hurt Obamacare, rather seriously, for the exact reasons you mentioned. 🙁

I may stop paying premiums too, now that the penalty is gone – my premiums this year doubled to almost $800 compared to last year, and the cheapest plan I could find was a Bronze plan, and a very crappy one at that. All for the low-low price of $520/mo.

I am reasonably healthy, was only in a hospital once with a knee injury a decade ago, and do not take any prescription medications. I should be a pretty cheap date, medical insurance-wise. But, as you said, without the mandate, premiums will skyrocket even higher.

Since they couldn’t kill it outright, they just nibbled it to death.

      • JackFknTwist

I am listening now to news that Susan Collins has been promised miscellaneous extra subsidies if she votes for this Tax Bill.
And she did vote for it.
She now expects the promises made to her by McConnell to be fulfilled…. only the foot soldier Repugs. are now opposed to those promised subsidies and they may not pass.

        Now my question is :
Is Susan Collins, senator from Maine a simpleton ?
Has 20 years a senator taught her nothing ?
Now she capitulates on the Health Care Mandate/fines on the vague unenforceable promise of “Jam tomorrow !”

Is she completely off her trolly ?
Can she be duped by this, when there were many demonstrations in her own constituency against this Tax Bill ?
Or is she just too old (like most of them) and past it all ?

        • jerry

          Yes.

        • David Walker

I agree with jerry and I like your “off her trolley” description. As for her constituents…it’s obvious to anyone with two brain cells to rub together that she couldn’t care less about those who vote for her and who, through taxes, pay her. I’m sure she got her “contributions” to her “re-election campaign” just like all the other honorable members did.

Also, I assume she’s not up for re-election in 2018. Can someone confirm/deny that?

        • Jay Silversmith

An emphatic YES to all your questions.

      • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

Yup, over 50 votes over a million dollars each and in reality, killing it this way is far more politically devious.

The individual mandate was an incentive to have insurance to pay for medical care, because people becoming disabled and bankrupted and being forced to rely on expensive emergency care, because without insurance they can’t afford the cheaper treatment that would have prevented the emergency or disability, is very expensive in terms of lives, suffering, lost economic productivity, and in making medical care more expensive thus raising insurance premiums and tax rates which drives a vicious cycle of less coverage, more poverty and higher costs.

The media should be playing his “I repealed Obamacare” claim in an endless loop, not trying to debunk this particular lie. Then next year, when people complain about skyrocketing insurance premiums (because, without the mandate, healthy people and die-hard free-marketeers opt out), his words will come back to haunt him and the Republicans in Congress. If he wants to claim that he killed Obamacare, let him, and he can accept the blame for making the system worse.

The corporate media will help–are helping–them to destroy your democracy.

For YEARS, they’ve done nothing to hold the right’s media LIE machine accountable. And they LET the GOP lie without holding them accountable to their FACES (a few articles and opinions pieces are not ENOUGH). It’s always, “The GOP says, the Dems say,” and “journalists,” most of them, are too fucking LAZY, or COMPLICIT with the right, with their corporate bosses, who PAY THEM, to do their JOBS, to look into an issue and find and disseminate the TRUTH.

When people–including children–are DYING without healthcare, the media will LET the GOP and their media LIE machine claim it’s “fake news” or “not what it looks like,” that their misfortune is somehow the VICTIMS’ faults.

The Democrats are INCOMPETENT. (Look at Northam say how he doesn’t want to “vanquish” his Republican colleagues. Yes, COLLEAGUES, colleagues who are out to DESTROY your democracy, who serve NO ONE but themselves and the gangster oligarchs! Northam hopes to work with these TRAITORS.)

The people will not PROTEST, even when CHILDREN are left to DIE without help! You have NO leadership, and if you DO protest, everyone–including the media and the Democrats–will denounce you as hooligans or as the “foolishly misled,” who don’t “respect democracy.”

The midterms will be as tampered with as the 2016 elections were–even if you win back SOME power, the oligarchs’ servants, the traitorous GOP, will continue to undermine your democracy in EVERY WAY THEY CAN. The Republic is DYING.

Only revolution will save you now, and Americans haven’t the brains or GUTS for it.

  • GeneInSJ

I think the goal of Republicans has always simple to end Obamacare with no replacement. I read that in a USAToday opinion piece and it makes sense. Trump pushed a “replacement” that the GOP never had or intended to create. They were probably cringing every time Trump mentioned it.

Trump is just spouting nonsense again.

    • Natty Enquirer

Bingo. The rich can pay for medicine out of their own pockets. They don’t care about the people who can’t and certainly don’t want to be taxed to provide for them. This much will never change.

      • netxtown

yes and no. When only 1% can afford to buy their pills – the price per pill is gonna be astronomical… Every single pharma douche NEEDS goveernemnt subsidies to stay in business.

      • Chucktech

No, the rich simply can afford exorbitant insurance premiums for Cadillac polices. They could also easily pay for, in example, their own costs for open heart surgery, but why pay $600,000 for that when their policy is “only” $25,000 a year?

      • Daveed_WOW

The rich don’t care about Social Security or Medicare or public schools or public transportation or coach travel or nursing homes or police or public health or consumer banking or anything else that the poors need. Why would they?

  • Natty Enquirer

The Affordable Care Act is a valiant but flawed effort. This country needs to join the civilized world and provide socialized medicine to its citizens.

    • kareemachan

But no need to toss it out when it’s shitloads better than what we had before….

    • Orly

Yeah, it was a baby step. Either we will have universal healthcare in this country, or we will have health care only the wealthy can actually use.

    • Gerry Fisher

The thing that makes me saddest about Obamacare is that it was implemented on the national level specifically to appease conservatives, given that it was designed by a conservative think tank. It was/is designed to keep profits flowing to the private sector. It was a compromise that Democrats thought could be handled by Republicans.

Then, because of skin pigment, Republicans did everything they could to kill it.

    OT:

“After Backing Tax Bill, Collins Says Her Demands Won’t Be Voted On This Year”

The morning after casting her vote for a tax bill that kills Obamacare’s individual mandate, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) put out a statement saying the health care policies she demanded in exchange for her vote will not be considered at all this year.

One bill would to restore government subsidies to insurance companies, known as cost sharing reduction (CSR) payments, that the Trump administration cut off earlier this year. Another would set up a temporary federal reinsurance program aimed at lowering premiums. Collins’ third demand was a waiver of deep automatic cuts to Medicare and other federal programs triggered by the $1.4 trillion price tag of the tax cuts passed this week.

        • JCF- I lived in the UK for a long time. One of the most shocking things was how freely the “c” word is used, for both females and males on occasion. In general, I found that cuss words are more freely used in the UK in daily conversation including the workplace (something actually I didn’t mind — except when racist words were used and I did not like that). But the “c” word is one I can’t even get myself to use without turning red! LOL

What do Trump and P.T.Barnum have in common?

They’ve both built their empires on the phrase, “There’s a sucker born every minute!”

    • robindaybird

Actually, P.T Barnum never actually said that – he made no bones that most of his displays are humbugs, and at least never insulted the people who visited his curiosities.

What he also misses – the chance that Sen. Collins took on supporting the tax bill – on condition that more money was made available to ‘stabilize the healthcare market’ – or to put it another way – ‘the government will have to pay out the money they won’t get in tax revenue, so that Obamacare doesn’t collapse”.

Whether she’ll get that promised legislation is another matter entirely…
