Sen. Al Franken To Resign On January 2nd

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports:

U.S. Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., plans to resign from Congress on Jan. 2, a spokesman said Wednesday. Minnesota Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, who Gov. Mark Dayton appointed to replace Franken, will be sworn in the next day.

Franken announced his resignation earlier in December after several women made allegations of unwanted sexual advances or touching and after more than two dozen Democratic Senators called for him to step down.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

What was the crime exactly ??

    • jeffg166

      Being Al Frankin it seems.

      • Joe in PA

Or Al Frankin being a Democrat. 馃檨

    • Treant

Got me. People seem to be blaming everybody but Franken. Either he did it and got out before the allegations got worse, or he was too weak-kneed to fight for his job and simply walked out.

    • Gerry Fisher

Posing for pictures at the state fair or at a USO performance just as an entertainer would, instead of making everyone sign a release and asking each person exactly where she wants his hand placed during the picture taking.

(It wasn’t an accident that the more seasoned politician who was at the state fair during the time in which one of the accusers claimed the harassment happened was asking, “Is it OK for me to place my hand on your shoulder or your back while taking the picture?” He knew how to do proper CYA.)

  • netxtown

NO! NO! NO! DON’T DO IT!!!

  • liondon#iamnotatraitor

Roy Moore still wants to date your daughter…allegedly.

    • Daveed_WOW

I think Franken’s daughter is over 18, but point taken.

  • leastyebejudged

    Well, that’s disappointing.

But he’s doing the right thing for the party I guess. Can’t call him selfish, that’s for sure.

  • AC

    #trulysad

    • Gerry Fisher

      I am deeply, deeply sad.

  • DreadPikathulhu

I understand that we hold our politicians accountable and all that, but what did this really accomplish?

    • leastyebejudged

Getting another woman in Congress ?

    • Ninja0980

Not a damn thing and it laid the groundwork for any Democrat to be guilty before being proven innocent.

      • Tomcat

He had the choice to wait for ethics and chose to quit.

        • Ninja0980

Democrats didn’t want to wait for that.

          • DreadPikathulhu

Democrats wanted to make a show that we held our politicians to a higher standard, but as has been demonstrated time and time again, the only standard the GOP holds their politicians to is winning office and their voters want to be on the winning side.

          • Bad Tom

But our “higher standard” didn’t include any judicial process, even though such a mechanism was available, and had been requested.

We failed Al Franken, we failed women, and we failed ourselves.

          • MT YVR

(with pompoms and fire and fireworks and lasers and the roar of a thousand lightning strikes) THIS. (jazz hands) Taa daaaaa

          • Ninja0980

Yup, we learned nothing from cases like Duke etc.

        • Bad Tom

He. Was. Not. Given. A. Choice.

      • leastyebejudged

Oh, like with Republicans now ? Irony.

    • Daveed_WOW
      • Joe in PA

        Gentlemen, rest your sphincters.

        Teeheehee…..

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

We went high when they went low with Roy Moore.

      So POINTS ! Or something

    • Bad Tom

We shot ourselves in the foot. Several ways.
      1) We got rid of one of our best allies.
      2) We established that even suspicious, unvetted claims containing demonstrable lies are sufficient to run you out of office. If you are a Democrat.
      4) Asking for process will not stop a frenzied mob, even of our best friends.
4a) This is the worst part.
      5) Republicans look on with disdain and glee. I can’t blame them.

      • canoebum

We also learned Kirsten Gillibrand is not to be trusted.

        • Kelly Lape

She’s a fucking dumb *#$ – now her calls for Trump to resign are being met with deaf ears. The women who were harassed are now lumped in with “he touched my butt during a photo shoot” – it lessened their credibility. When Gillibrand went after Trump my reaction was for him to not resign.

          • Lantor

Yeah, I’m probably not going to give her much of a second look during the primary season in 2020. If she becomes the nominee, I guess I’ll have to hold my nose and push the button. I was really hoping Franken was going to run in 2020. Could you imagine what he could do with Trump?

        • JackFknTwist

part of the new aggressive feminine fascist push for attention.

    • Adam Schmidt

I’ve posted this elsewhere but Franken is a casualty of our burgeoning awakening about sexual harassment. We as a culture are finally coming to terms with the idea that sexual harassment exists, that many men (particularly men in power) do it, and that it should have consequences. The problem is that while we’re figuring out that it’s been happening, we haven’t figured out where the lines belong. What’s the difference between “acceptable”, “in poor taste but not illegal”, “not illegal but our elected officials should be fired if they’re doing this because we expect better”, and “illegal and should be prosecuted”? Because I’m pretty sure that there are ways to say “I think you look good today” that can fall into just about any of those categories.

But for now, Franken is having to step down because we as a society haven’t figured out where the lines are. Is a comedian posing in a suggestive manner with a woman who appears to be asleep something that is in poor taste or something that should be illegal because it’s assault? Can we codify that into law?

      • Gerry Fisher

        Well said. 馃檨

  • another_steve

So I’m extremely farklempt on the matter of Al Franken. His primary accuser has been revealed to be a right wing hack. He’s a comedian by training, not a politician. He’s probably done lots of stupid (but not criminal) things that he thought were funny.

    Signed,

    Extremely Farklempt

      • another_steve

        Lol. Hadn’t seen that before.

I forgive our fools. I’ve been a fool in my day.

        I know what it’s like.

      • Ham

Nice beefy ass. Surprised there aren’t pictures of people grabbing it.

      • PlutoAnimus

Amazing how much he looks like David Johansen of the New York Dolls!

      • Ron

I had a boyhood crush on him after seeing skits like this. The one where they came out as gay lovers while wearing a diaper made my teen age libido tingle.

      • Oh’behr in Minnesota

Gosh, I’m probably the only person who doesn’t like the actual Rolling Stones and I love the skit by Davis and Franken. It’s great.

        • Oh’behr in Minnesota

Plus Franken is more muscular and handsome than Mick Jagger. He makes me want to puke a bit when I now see him. Ugh. He didn’t age well. Drugs, Drugs, Drinking, Drugs, Drugs, Drinking, Sex and Rock’N’Roll.

          • Gerry Fisher

Keep in mind that he’s in his 70s. How hot is a 70 y/o supposed to look?

Keith Richards, on the other hand? I remember him on the cover of Rolling Stone circa approximately ’79 and thinking, “Ohhhh…he doesn’t have long to live.” (He was in his late 30s then, I think.)

        • Gerry Fisher

IMO, the Rolling Stones have done some incredible recorded work. However, since at least 1980, their live shows have been “old guys posing,” sounding juuuuust enough like the Rolling Stones to get the cash to roll in. More like a cover band than the real thing.

They deserved the mocking done in this skit, especially Jagger.

        • canoebum

I am a big fan of the Rolling Stones music recorded while Brian Jones was still alive. It was really his band, he’s the one who started it. He brought great creativity and musical ability to the writing, arranging and performance. After he was gone, the band became much more hard edged and less to my liking.

      • Gerry Fisher

What makes it even better is that they’re performing one of the Rolling Stones’ most offensive songs.

    • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

One of the other accusations was of an attempted kiss. Attempted?
Another was that he put his arm around a woman’s waist for a photograph
at a public event, and ‘aggressively” pulled her toward him.

I guess my Aunt Esther (note to all non-Jews: all Jews are required to have an Aunt Esther) is guilty of sexual assault. And don’t get me started on my Uncle Harry, with his unwanted pinching of my cheeks (as a boy, get your mind out of the gutter) is another that I guess is lucky didn’t lose his job and become a pariah.

      • Piet

Uncle Julius and Aunt Miriam. Not married to each other.

        • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

And you talk like I should be surprised? [Read in your Aunt Esther’s voice please]

      • another_steve

        Lol.

So here’s the thing imo (emphasis on “in my opinion”): All males are pigs. Queer and straight. All of us males. Pigs.

I’m pretty much an absolutist biological evolutionist.

Some of it isn’t pretty. Some of it is no longer biologically optimal. Some of it we males should suppress, to the extent we are capable of so doing.

That said, let’s view it all in a biological context.

        • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

To me, part of and having the evolutionary and mental capacity to behavior in ways beyond our basic biological drives is to me, one of the things that makes us human and civilized.

Some of us are less evolved than others.

    • Gerry Fisher

He put his arm around women who asked to have pictures taken with a famous person, and he did it like every entertainer/celebrity would do it, putting his hand on her back or near her hip. That was his crime. /s

  • Cuberly Deux

Vellchi: “Back to (covering the) biggest taxcut in the history of the world day.”

Hahahahahaha…um, he said that with CONSIDERABLE snark. It was priceless.

  • Kelly Lape

    Thus ends the democratic party.

    • leastyebejudged

We had a majority of votes, again, and insist the system still works, AGAIN.

Maybe it’s time for the Democratic party to come to a well deserved END.

      • Six Pins Delores

Establishment dems appear to enjoy loosing too much for that happen

    • Tomcat

If that was all the party was, it should end, but I think we will come back stronger than ever.

    • I love dim sum

Good, it’s just a 2nd republican party anyway, that pretends to like minorities and LGBT people (newsflash, they don’t actually like us)

      • MBear

        • Ningsisa

I know what you鈥檙e doing, but you are actually leaving some good housekeeping tips here.

  • Harveyrabbit

Among other things they’re really going to miss him on his senate hearing panels. He was one of the few Democrats who knew what questions to ask, how to ask them and wouldn’t back down.

    • Tomcat

And that is why the women came forward.

      • Bad Tom

I think those women are lying.

        • Tomcat

          Isn’t that what I wrote?

          • Bad Tom

            Hmmm. Apparently so.
            My apologies, then.

      • leastyebejudged

Pretty much, remove the most effective reps.

    • Ninja0980

Hence the hit job on him.

    • pi may

is there really nothing more than that type of thing and the kissing practice?

      • HZ81

Not sure. 3 or 4 are completely anonymous and 4 known are ridiculous. Groping air boobs is his worst offense.

  • I love dim sum

Serves him right that he got exposed. Despite the fact that Bernie won in a landslide against Hillary in the Minnesota primaries, he still voted for Hillary. He’s a neoliberal creep.

    • Lazycrockett

I see the trolls got the holidays off.

      • I love dim sum

The real trolls are the die hard Hillary supporters that turned out to be complete creeps to women (Feinstein, Franken, Louis CK).

    • thatotherjean

I hope he runs again in 2018, and lets the people of Minnesota decide whether or not he should be in the Senate. He’s too good to lose.

    • Gerry Fisher

I think it’s worse than that. It’s people who played off of witch burning to get rid of a political adversary.

  • April

Now with Franken out I’m sure the Republicans will hold Trump accountable and will force him to resign.

    Na.

  • pi may

whats the worst thing Franken did ? , I really don’t know

    • BobSF_94117

If the allegations are true — and he most certainly has not said they are — the french kiss instead of a fake french kiss seems the worst, I think.

  • bkmn

    I smell Roger Stone.

  • JCF

An ambivalent Adios, Mr Franken. My hunch is that we have not heard the last from you…and that’s *probably* a good thing.

    • peacfulseas inWA

I have the same hunch. He may be very valuable ” outside ” the bubble. Although a short time in office he learned quickly and was not an institutional politician.

  • JackNasty

I liked Senator Gillibrand until she announced her crusade was too important to include due process or any sense of proportionality.

What I find more disturbing is that so many other women I admired, including Senators Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren, went along with it.

Due process is more important than any cause. I hope these reckless crusaders find a way to undo the damage have done to their own worthy crusade.

  • rednekokie

I regret this — one of our finest senators.
And all the stuff on him was before he was even in politics — he was a comedian.
But he became our finest senator.

  • customartist

Democrats reacted too quickly without prudent consideration here.
    New leadership is sorely needed.
