Flake Flakes On White House Tax Celebration: I Can Only Take So Many Of These Stand And Clap Things

The Hill reports:

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said he skipped a gathering of congressional Republicans at the White House on Wednesday because he did not want to attend an event where lawmakers are expected to simply “stand around and clap.”

The event, attended by House and Senate GOP leaders and a number of Republican lawmakers, was held to celebrate congressional Republicans’ passage of a massive tax rewrite.

“I can only take so many of those stand around and clap things, I’d rather be here,” Flake told reporters at the Capitol.

Yay! I worked for FairDistrictsPA on election day…people were fired up. Our PA congress critters…not so much. Can’t get it out of committee. Arrrgh.

      • clay

Might not need to get it out of (Daryl Metcalfe’s, always Daryl Metcalfe’s) committee since at least one of the two court cases seems to be going well. Unfortunately, due to the timing, won’t be able to stop gerrymandering from the 2020 Census.

        • Joe in PA

Yeah, we can hope. But as I understand it…very likely the census will indicate fewer citizens…the lines will get redrawn again (by Republicans), Dems will challenge in court…it will go to the PA Supreme Court which is Dem controlled. So who knows.

          • clay

(the Census doesn’t indicate “citizens”; it indicates “residents”)

Yes, even if we, the people, win either case, it won’t have full impact until 2030. The incumbents will still be in place for the 2020 redistricting.

          • Joe in PA

Thanks, I never thought about citizen vs resident w/ resp to the Census. So how does that equate to representation? How do we get from resident to citizen w/ regard to congressional districts. Hmmm, inquiring minds.

          • clay

The US Constitution doesn’t say representation is based on citizens or voters, but on “the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.”

    • Chucktech

Sigh… Yeah, sure, give it a shot. I’ll be floored if anything regarding gerrymandering is done without the force of law requiring it.

      • bkmn

Democrats need to be putting ads out that if they want to end gerrymandering that people need to stop electing the Republicans that do it. (and the Democrats in Illinois)

    • Ninja0980

Expect to see Michigan Republicans negate it if it passes.

      • Just like Flori-duh did. The voters fought for fair districting, won at the ballot box, and had it ignored by the legislature.

        • Librarykid

The funny thing about Floriduh is that with the terrible conditions that the government has not relieved in Puerto Rico, Puerto Ricans are flooding into the state. Would not it be poetic justice if they all voted for democrats and flipped the state?

    • killreligion

What a beautiful renaissance revival facade.

      • lymis

The GOP is good with facades.

    • JT

Gerrymandering. This is how the criminal Rethug party started and continue their power grab. They are rotten to the core and Dems have been complicit in this by allowing grace and high-mindedness to be manipulated in service to the evil purposes of the GOP.

    • lymis

Ending gerrymandering will become a huge GOP priority as soon as they find themselves in the minority in state and federal legislatures.

2108 is shaping up to be a (long-overdue) political bloodbath for the GOP. They will immediately start squealing how the Democrats cannot be allowed to do to them what the GOP did when they were in power.

          I like Taibbi, he’s a great writer.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

      Fake book reviews! Sad.

    • David Walker

I do like the book, although I now have this urge to somehow do away with the Electoral College.

    • Gerry Fisher

I had no interest in reading this book. (I feel as if I’ve ready enough about what happened that I didn’t need any additional information from her.) What it *did* do was cause me to go out and buy George Stephanopoulos’ book about his time with the Clintons.

Maybe I’m alone in this feeling, but, despite being in the public eye for so very long, I feel as if there’s something I’m missing about Hillary (and, having supported him for 90% of his presidency, I want to re-evaluate my feelings about Bill Clinton). So far, I’m learning more about Stephanopoulus than I am about the Clintons, but it’s a very, very good book.

This GANGSTER government is poised to ROB the American people, already letting poor kids suffer without healthcare, and planning to let tens of thousands DIE prematurely ever year without the medical assistance they’ll need.

When the government of a supposedly “free” country is actively HARMING–going out of its WAY to harm–the majority of the people it’s supposed to be serving to benefit only the chosen few–and to further enrich its own members–I no longer consider its authority legitimate.

When the government of what WAS a genuine democracy has been taken over by the lackeys of criminal plutocrats, I call that a COUP. I don’t care if it has the cloak of legality–what they are doing is a CRIME. Blatant, flagrant corruption is still WRONG, even when the criminals who’ve managed, by hook or by crook, to gain control of all the levers of power–the criminals who are laughing in your faces–say otherwise.

    Protest, and stop their crimes!

I go further: the time has come to refuse to recognize not only the authority of this criminal government, unless protests can force it to mend its ways, but ALSO to refuse to recognize–unless they change course under pressure from the people–the authority of a political party which is betraying this democracy!

    • Cattleya1

Apparently, no one reads Dickens any more. Beating up people who need assistance to go on living didn’t work in the 1800’s. It didn’t work under Raygun and Bush 1. It didn’t work under Bush 2. Why, besides all the money involved, do these people take such delight in adding to the burden of human misery?

  • Tomcat

Next important step for GOP. Get back to voter suppression in a national way.

      • Tomcat

They figure that when money is in play they should make the decisions since it is their money.

    • billbear1961

That’s why I tell people they must protest NOW–that this can’t wait until the midterms–that one of the things they should be DEMANDING is SECURE elections.

I might as well stop posting–massive and relentless protests aren’t going to happen.

I have to resign myself to the fact that the great majority are just going to LET fascism come to the U.S.

    • clay

They are intentionally trying to fuck up the Census so bad that it will have to be ditched, and they’ll just use the 2016 federal voters for the numbers and distribution for redistricting.

The corporate media will help–are helping–them to destroy your democracy. For YEARS, they’ve done nothing to hold the right’s media LIE machine accountable. And they let the GOP lie without holding them accountable to their FACES (a few articles and opinions pieces are not enough). It’s always, “The GOP says, the Dems say,” and “journalists,” most of them, are too fucking lazy, or incompetent, or complicit with the right, with their corporate bosses, who pay them, to do their JOBS, to look into an issue and find and disseminate the TRUTH. When people–including children–are DYING without healthcare, the media will LET the GOP and their media LIE machine claim it’s “fake news” or “not what it looks like,” that their misfortune is somehow the VICTIMS’ faults.

The Democrats are INCOMPETENT, if not something WORSE than that. Look at Northam say how he doesn’t want to “vanquish” his Republican colleagues. Yes, COLLEAGUES, colleagues who are out to DESTROY your democracy, who serve NO ONE but themselves and the gangster oligarchs! Northam hopes to work with these TRAITORS.

The people will not protest, even when CHILDREN are left to DIE without help! You have NO leadership, and if you DO protest, everyone–including the media and the Democrats–will denounce you as hooligans or as the “foolishly misled,” who don’t “respect democracy.” The midterms will be as tampered with as the 2016 elections were–even if you win back SOME power, the oligarchs’ servants, the traitorous GOP, will continue to undermine your democracy in EVERY WAY THEY CAN. The Republic is DYING–it is under attack from ever conceivable angle! Your institutions are FAILING.

Only REVOLUTION–a peaceful REBELLION–will save you now. You must, unless massive and relentless protests force them to change course, refuse to recognize the authority of this CRIMINAL government and the CRIMINAL party running it. And you must DEMAND action from the Democrats, that they hold these criminals accountable, denounce them for what they so obviously are, that they either compel them to change course or relieve them of their FORFEIT authority!

If you use a wood burning stove with glass in the door, and find it a real challenge to clean the creosote and crap off the glass, I have a useful tip for you.

Take a rag (I use an old facecloth), dampen it in water and dip it in the ashes in the stove. Rub the ashes on the glass (inside the stove), and then wipe with a newspaper. For some magical reason, the damp ash dissolves the mess on the glass – like magic!

Bernie only won in Caucuses which favors the upperclass who can take a day off (and in WA state only represented 1% of voters, compare to the 90% voter base in the normal primary), in normal primary voting, especially closed primaries, Clinton blew Sanders out of the water.

          • Todd20036

The only candidate Clinton had to be better than was Trump – that’s who she ran against.

It’s fun to play imaginary politics, and have fantasies about someone who gives you what you really want. And it’s good, and useful, to work toward getting that someone, or a reasonable facsimile, on the ballot. Then election day comes, and it’s time to be an adult, and go for the best of the actual options.

When you’re in the only place in town to eat, and they serve moldy pizza with a suspicious rainbow shine on the pepperoni, or dry looking chicken breast with instant mashed potatoes, there’s no point in pining for a beautiful salad. You pick the choice that at least won’t give you food poisoning.

What tax bill? The one we knew would be a fucking disaster and would pass anyway? Old news.

Actually, can we just do the public spanking? I’m in a mood.

  • Michael

Way to take a f’ing stand.

  • Sporkfighter

Too little conscience far too late. Talking to make yourself feel better doesn’t help the kids without insurance because YOU voted to kill CHIP.

  • houstonray

I watched a variety of news channels tonight when I got home. I’m seeing all this positive coverage of Trump and the tax bill, how well it does for families, how “everyone gets a tax break” the “personal deduction is doubled” the “childcare credit is doubled” your “paychecks will be higher” and “corporations are already raising minimum wage and giving out bonuses”. Nothing else, then they show Trump cheering to raucous applause.

It’s disgusting. Further gas lighting of the masses.

The Republicans are on cloud nine right now.

If Mueller takes another year, I don’t think it will matter.

    • David Walker

My landlord tried to convince me how great this is gonna be for the US. He was kind of disappointed that I wasn’t cheering him on. “I’m just not big on presidents who constantly lie and a congress that doesn’t call him on any of his whoppers.” I don’t think my rent will go up, but I’m not sure.

      • Cuberly Deux

Well, as a property owner he gets a nice little bonus as part of the bill. So if he does he’d be double dipping.

      • Todd20036

If the bill was so wonderful, why’d the Nazis not have a single bipartisan committee? Why weren’t the democrats allowed to offer a single amendment? Why wasn’t the bill even given to everyone until 3 hours before the vote, including notes written in the margins?

That alone is why I am disgusted with anyone saying it’s a good bill

        • Paul

It’s one of those bills that has equal flaws and positives. The biggest flaw, IMO, is that it’s so mish-mashed it comes off like a slacker college freshman pulling an all-nighter on an essay.

          • killreligion

True and it’s the hacks who are in charge’s fault. Ryan can’t legislate his way out of a wet paper bag and Mconnel with his dopey dear eyed blank stare is not too bright either

Neither leads, they follow their paymasters.

          • Librarykid

They are whores totally owned by their pimps.

        • killreligion

I have not seen one credible person say it’s a good bill. Credible mind you. Reasonable conservatives like Brooks are saying it’s a terrible bill. NPR had a conservative Harvard economust say he liked the Corp tax cuts but it wasn’t really worth the damage it will do and the fed will raise rates canceling any stimulus.

I think things could turn if enough dimwits listen. It’s the stupidity that hurts us.

          • Librarykid

            A-fuckin-men

        • ZRAinSWVA

A bill that’s over 1000 pages long. Yes, I read it, but unless you’re a super duper speed reader, you can’t do that in 3 hours…so they voted on something they hadn’t read or debated. Nice. Typical.

    • billbear1961

I just got through saying, in a post downthread, that the corporate media would help them.

      • houstonray

Sorry I hadn’t read down yet, that is so true. It’s depressing.

        • billbear1961

Why are you sorry? You’ve helped me prove what I was saying!

Yes, it’s depressing, but also ENRAGING.

          I hate these goddamned WHORES.

          • houstonray

Enraging is a great word. I do feel depressed but more often that leads to enraged.

    • Treant

MSNBC, CNN, CBS, ABC, Fox, and all the others get great tax breaks from this, so of course they’re the cheering squad.

And Mueller won’t be done in a year. And it won’t matter.

      • Tomcat

One thing for sure, the corporations that were paying NOTHING
        can NOW do that easier.

      • Gerry Fisher

He doesn’t need to be done. All that needs to happen is to issue more significant indictments in early 2018 to get the ball rolling faster. It can still happen.

    • another_steve

      Perceptive, houstonray.

The honorable TV media are in some sort of dysfunctional status at the moment. I think it has to do with the fact that they know from their daily focus groups that a considerable portion of their viewership is mindless and open to any suggestion that will keep them watching through the next round of Cialis and Medicare-supplement commercials.

Where I live, it’s 7 pm and I’m interested only in pseudo-pornographic images.

Sexual desire is among the top most desires of humankind. I think it right and just from a biological/species perspective; Without lust and the want to fuck, we cease to exist as a species.

Queer lust has a crucial role to play in this.

It’s complicated, to say the least. 😉

          • killreligion

I’ve always wondered about the evolutionary role of queer lust. I know it is real but have varying theories as to it’s value

Does it mitigate breeding by the most attractive hunky men who get some from the boys, adding to diversity? Does it help successful child bearing women get a break so they breed more?

There is a relationship between hot men getting off together and breeding success somewhere in there.

          • another_steve

We’re all of us only guessing when it comes to this stuff.

I adhere to two major theories re why biological evolution selects some to be queer:

One (similar to what you’ve voiced) is the “nurturing aunt and uncle” theory. Some of us are selected not to breed but to be supportive, in subtle and diverse ways, to those who do.

The other (perhaps more controversial and bordering on stereotyping) goes like this:

Queer people, unencumbered with children themselves, help create a cultural milieu conducive to joy. To beauty.

A cultural milieu more conducive to wanting to breed (for those selected to do so).

            😉

      • lymis

What’s weird is that usually, the media thrives on playing on fear and controversy – which they could do a lot better by reporting on what the GOP is doing to hurt people.

      • Librarykid

They were in a similar dysfunctional mode all during the presidential campaign; just could not lavish enough attention on 45.

    • ChrisInKansas

I watched the CBS Evening News. It was fucking pathetic.

    • killreligion

I’m in mass and get NY market news. It’s very balanced. All mentioning the deduction increase is cancelled by the exemption elimination (a particularly shitty thing for them to have done ), the expiration, the thinly veiled desperation of a few tiny bonus checks, a big segment on the cows refusal to admit trump gains a lot etc

Could it be you are in the TX market???

    • Gerry Fisher

I can’t imagine him taking another year. When the investigation started, I did some math according to expert opinions about how big cases like this typically unfold. The math indicated significant indictments in “early 2018.” The indictments we’ve seen so far have actually appeared earlier than predicted.

We’re 11 days or so from the beginning of “early 2018.” Hang in there!

  • zhera

O/T: I’m sick. Was supposed to travel tomorrow, for x-mas celebrations at my brother’s place. But I’m sick and achy and cannot travel.

First x-mas alone for me. My mother didn’t like it: “But you’ll be alone!” “Yes.” “But it’s x-mas!” “Yes. And if I go, and I feel like this, it’ll be torture for five days.” “Yeah, there’s that.”

X-mas is such a phony thing anyway. It’s just another day, but we turn it into this huge thing where it is mandatory to be with family and if you’re alone it’s shameful and sad. Fuck that. I wish I was well enough to travel but since I’m not, I’m looking forward to some quiet days by myself.

    • Bomer

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

      • zhera

        Thanks, luv.

    • Lazycrockett

I’m not doing anything for christmas except for sleeping in, ordering pizza and watching movies all day. I’ll be happier than spending it with family and we get along fine, but its just another day when you not a kid anymore.

      • zhera

It’s not so exciting anymore when you’re sitting there waiting for the day to be over so you can be alone again, instead of waiting for the gifts. I love my family, I really do, but x-mas eve (the big day in Norway) is a looooong day and even longer when loud kids are added.

    • MikeBx2

Sorry you are sick, but I agree you should enjoy the quiet time. Hang out here if you get lonely. 🙂

      • zhera

Oh, I will. Also planning on watching movies and stuffing my face with only bad food. 😀

    • Hank

Feel better soon. Push the fluids. If you are up for it, we will be here to entertain you.

      • zhera

        Thanks! I’ll be around.

    • another_steve

So you have an extended family of beloved here on JMG, zhera.

      Stay with us.

You know we love and respect you.

      • zhera

Much love to you, Steve! We have our differences but there’s room for that. 🙂

I’ll be around. Can’t let go of Joe’s Place for too long!

        • another_steve

Differences in views are immaterial to me, dear friend. You sometimes challenge my views but never my honesty or integrity.

I love you for that. 😉

          • Librarykid

See there? Not being a Republican you have honesty and integrity. Such a mensch!

      • Bryan

And if that’s not enough, the weed, alcohol and prostitutes of all kinds flow freely here.

        • Treant

          Did somebody say “prostitutes?”

I give it out free. Just sayin’. You don’t have to pay me or nuthin’.

          • Silver Badger

How kind of you to put it in writing.

          • Bryan

I was originally going to say Whores but I thought it might confer too much gendered sexism.

Do you know what causes middle age spread? It happens because you are too old to sell it and feel too young to give it away so it backs up on you.

          • Treant

I’ve always given it away. I’m a naturally giving person.

In my case, it must be that people don’t want it, so that’s why it’s backing up on me. 🙁

    • Treant

That might be a good thing. I’ll be dealing with Constantly Drunk And Obnoxious Cousin, his father, I Will Bedevil You Until You Explode At Which Time It’s Your Fault, another cousin Little Missus Right Wing Christian Hypocrite, and so on. And that’s just Christmas Eve.

Drink lots of fluids, eat all the good stuff, and take care of yourself. I should be on around midnight Christmas Eve to whine piteously in the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Lesbians” post.

      • Silver Badger

Biological relatives simply aren’t worth the trouble. Grab your husband and go somewhere nice.

        • Treant

It does give me time to say to the alcoholic’s father, “Save time and fuck off right now.”

If I do it around people who hate him (most of us), everybody claims they heard nothing.

        • anne marie in philly

“Biological relatives simply aren’t worth the trouble.” – THIS! it’s just me & spouse & cats. xmess is a day off work for us, nothing more. we’ll go have a nice asian meal and drinks and a nap.

          • My first Xmas in NYC I wasn’t able to go home. (Too many gigs) so I asked coworkers what might be open. One was Jewish and advised me to eat Chinese food and go see a movie. Those are the two things sure to be open. And that’s what I did.

          • Librarykid

Would we ever steer you wrong?

          • Thanks for making me miss NYC more than I already do.

        • Christopher Smith

          Amen. Biology is NOT destiny.

        • vorpal

I guess I’m pretty lucky. I adore my biological and extended family and really wish I could see them more often.

          • ZRAinSWVA

I’m happy for you! My parents have come (mostly) around, but it’s taken 35 years of hell…and me having to deal with them voting for the ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ in Virginia, this after my spouse and I had been together 20 years (now 30).

          • Silver Badger

            You are truly fortunate.

      • Bryan

Well clearly you need to break your right-wing hypocrite cousin into the shape of a cross and then use it on your devil father/uncle/person-in-law.

The resulting insanity will cause Obnoxious Cousin to weep bitter tears and Constantly Drunk to swear off alcohol.

Don’t worry that I’ve solved your family problem for free nao.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

Can’t you just ghost them? If the food is terrible, I’m not seeing the point.

        • Treant

The food is terrible. Although that’s actually the other side of the family. 🙂

On the up side, Constantly Drunk will probably not show up. His dad will, but I move faster than he does.

      • zhera

Damn, now I feel bad about complaining. Your situation is way worse!

    • TuuxKabin

It may be an awakening as to what has priority for you. I hope the quiet days to yourself help you recover. Traveling is only stressful, at this time of year, more so. It could make you feel worse. And you’re not that alone. We’re all here. Some alone as well. Keep us informed as to how you are doing. Hope you feel better pronto.

      • zhera

Thank you, dear! I’ll be around for the holiday. Merry jul to you and hubs!

    • boobert

Feel better soon ,but don’t tell them and have a lovely holiday . I’m so happy that we are not traveling the 1100 miles to see my family this year. It will be the first peaceful holiday since my father passed away in 2007. We both had some procedures lately, and I’m using them as an excuse not to go. My mother says she’s upset about it , but that’s because she’ll have no one to argue with. I’m almost to the point that I don’t care if I ever see them again. Hubby’s family is closer and they can even call me aunt boobert, lol.

      • Treant

I keep requesting that I be Auntie Treant, but they insist on Uncle.

        • boobert

I so much want to go up to one of the young ones and say ” I’m your auntie Boobert !” lol

      • zhera

Thanks, boo. Hope your holiday turns out just as you want.

I’m laid up as well, flulike symptoms. At least if I’m wearing that stupid CPAP mask at night I’m a lot less communicable to my spouse. And I don’t have to go anywhere on Xmas, tho’ we are having friends in for the usual supper, so I need to get my condition mitigated, toot sweet.

      • zhera

Ugh, so glad I don’t need any CPAP mask! I don’t understand how people get any sleep at all with those things strapped on.

        • coram nobis

Better than snoring so loud you wake yourself up. And your spouse. Or waking up gagging.

        • ZRAinSWVA

My spouse was having 100+ apneaic episodes per hour…big ones where he’d arc his back trying to get a breath. With a CPAP, he sleeps like a baby…and so do I. I am so thankful we live in an age where this can be treated!

          • lymis

I had the same experience – so much so that when I got the CPAP and started actually sleeping, my husband couldn’t sleep at first, because he kept waking up afraid I’d died because I wasn’t making any noise.

    • GanymedeRenard

Sorry to hear that, but you’re a fighter. Don’t let your being unwell ruin your festivities! Big hugs and happy Jul!

      • zhera

Thanks, and merry jul to you as well!

    • Christopher Smith

Amen, Zhera. Don’t even get me started on the annual atavistic charade of ‘xmas.’ It of course is a billion times worse in amurrikkka as I’m sure you know.

    • Lumpy Gaga

Husbot’s there (sick and achy). I seem to be 24 hours behind.

But a holiday is a holiday, and I intend to enjoy 4 days off, baby jeebus or no baby jeebus.

    • vorpal

Poor zhera! I am so sorry to hear you are sick.
Hubby and I are staying here in Chile for the holidays along with a few other families.
Enjoy your quiet days, and don’t be afraid to reach out for distraction from being sick if you need!

    • lymis

“X-mas is such a phony thing anyway. It’s just another day,”

That’s ridiculous. Clearly you’re not paying attention.

Christmas is a cultural obsession that starts the week before Halloween and continues through New Years. Pretty soon, it’s going to overrun Labor Day.

    • ZRAinSWVA

I’ve come to despise Christmas. The commercialization, the pressure to buy crap that people most likely don’t need or want… Over it, so now we just give gifts to charity on behalf of others…and I don’t care it they like it; nor do I care if they’re offended if we give gifts to charities they wouldn’t support (e.g., LBGT).

Hope you feel better soon, Zhera!

    • Gerry Fisher

The husband is recovering from surgery (he’s doing great), and I’m studying for a licensing exam all week. We’re pretty much skipping the holidays this year. No biggie! We have a move to Fort Lauderdale coming up next year. Working toward that will be our Solstice gift to ourselves.

Hang in there, buddy! You won’t be the only one “alone for the holidays,” whatever that’s supposed to mean.

    • A few years ago I had a very busy gig season. I don’t think I had a day off between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. I was stuck in town because I had one more the day after Christmas (a Sunday gig subbing for someone out of town) so I spent Christmas alone. It was bliss. I literally had nothing to do for a whole day. No place to be, no fighting traffic to get from one end of the metroplex to another in time for a call. Nada. I slept late, ate goodies, and watched movies all day long. Now it’s not something I’d want to do every year, but it really wasn’t bad. In fact it was better than most Christmases I’ve had. And a nice break. I’d been paid to celebrate Christmas for a month already!

      • Librarykid

Given the chance, I’d do that at least 5 days out of 7.

    • Librarykid

I am sorry that you are sick, but hope that you have the mental makeup to be good company for yourself so that you can be alone, but not lonely.

No. Girl must regain her strength and her vigor.

No more 10-minute dissertations on the Calvin Coolidge presidency and how his Secretary of State did this or that.

          • JCF

Rachel has PLENTY of strength and vigor, to those who appreciate her. And plenty of righteous rage, powering her. Just in a highly-focussed, “remember your history, if you want to change your future” way. Some of us love her, exactly the way she is—and draw strength and vigor from her. If you aren’t one of those people, then—No Harm, No Foul—move on.

          • another_steve

I suspect some of that view is a woman-loving-woman thing, 😉

OT/ For something completely different: Since we’re in the holiday season, I thought I’d share an interesting short selection from the Mark Morris Dance Group performance of “The Hard Nut”, its takeoff on The Nutcracker. The story veers from the traditional ballet and into the bizarre. But I think the section I have queued up is so touching. You almost never see two men dancing together like this in ballet (aside from Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, where the two male leads dance together with very romantic overtones.)

In this scene, the Nutcracker is transformed into a living boy, and he and Drosselmyer the toymaker (his creator) dance together. It makes me think of a loving father teaching his newly sentient son what it means to be alive. (They then rescue the unconscious Clara/Marie who was knocked out at the end of the previous scene during the battle with the mouse king’s army.)

The scene that follows is the Dance of the Snowflakes, which is also interesting and unconventional the way they toss out the snow glitter all over the stage; it reminds me of a part from Fantasia with the frost fairies.

    https://youtu.be/Jnj5DAjupZc?t=31m29s

    • Hank

The most erotic ballet, that I ever saw, was The Twentieth Century Paris Ballet directed by Bejart. ALL the male dancers were on stage in white tights and bare chests….and visible bulges. The music, was a combination of Hayden AND the Tango!!! There were only 3 women in minor dance rolls in the performance.

      • I found this — Bolero by Bejart and the same company with shirtless guys. Close?
        https://youtu.be/dovA8PuWGLU

        • Hank

Edddi, thanks for the Bolero. It was very entertaining. Just imagine all the dancers in White Tights, instead of black pants. The bulges are much more pronounced that way. Also, this was the Bejart Ballet of Lausanne, not the same as the XXe Siecle Ballet (which came before Lausanne), but acceptable, of course.

This was supposed to be his Xmas gift to the gullible.

    • David Walker

Because the federal government did nothing when it expired in September, many states’ CHIP benefits will end starting January 1 whether the fucking moron signs the bill or not. This one is squarely on the honorable banana republican’ts’ heads. Women who are pregnant and expect to deliver in February or later will be stripped of their benefits. Kids receiving treatment for serious, even life-threatening, medical problems will get to go cold turkey from treatment, for many on January 1, placing both the patients and the parents in jeopardy. At what point do we say “I’ve had enough of this bullshit!”? Happy Fucking New Year, America. I hope you’re fucking proud.

      • clay

Depends on the state. PA has announced that it will be using the state’s share (the $ the state kicks in) of CHIP up front, so people will have a few months to try to get onto the exchanges, etc.

        • David Walker

It’s that damned Democratic governor. Thinks too much. Takes peoples’ plights too much to heart. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?

I wonder if letting Democratic Senators the chance to complain might have helped? They’re too afraid of opposition to use the “loyal opposition” to their advantage. Insecure fuck-wits.

My shegetz husband poo-poos my lust for Jared. He does not – cannot – understand.

A Jewish 36-year-old wannabe twink with a size 34 waistline and a million dollars in the bank?

        Please.

        What’s not to understand.

        • He has several hundred million in “the bank” in various forms of investments. Unfortunately for him, he has Mueller and company after him – as well as various State DA’s- for perjury and collusion with the Russkies, all sorts of creditors after him for bad investments on the rather poorly thought of (and named) 666 Fifth Avenue, and Trump as a father-in-law. My guess is he is probably in the red on paper right now. He is not a happy camper.

OT and I’m pissed beyond belief. Comcast has been unable to deliver an uninterrupted feed of Rachel. NBC and all the cable NBCs are part of Comcast, but this seems to be a chronic thing…they are unable to deliver their own programs. I’m sure this is no indication of their attitude toward net neutrality.

But I digress. One part that did manage to get through uninterrupted was the revelation that Puerto Rico, thanks to a provision in the working- and middle class-people friendly tax bill, will be treated as a foreign country and taxed accordingly. The banana republicans and the fucking moron will now treat the American citizens who live in Puerto Rico totally different than other US citizens. That means that even when Puerto Rico finally recovers physically, they will be responsible for paying back loans. The island surrounded by water, big water, in the middle of the ocean, still with only 32% of US citizens having electric and potable water supplies even worse will be expected to somehow pay back DC.

Fortunately, the governor of Puerto Rico is highly pissed off about this and has said that if the diaspora of Puerto Rico US citizens in the US, as many as 14 states could expect their federal government reps voted out of office. This will probably mean all kinds of new vote-hindering laws by the honorable ladies and gentlemen in power. There is the possibility of somehow refusing to acknowledge that US citizens from Puerto Rico are, in fact, US citizens…a can of worms that will rival Pandora’s box.

But I do have a question for those of you in Houston and the general Houston area and west Florida…have your areas ravaged by the super-hurricanes of September still lacking electric or potable water? Are you expected to wait until May to get those in place? Are the signs of disaster still apparent? I’m guessing they are, that there are still difficulties, but not enough to cut you out of the US, or that you won’t have to wait until May to get your electric up and running. What is your ranking 1 (zip) to 10 (outstanding) of FEMA response and government help?

Is there nothing the fucking republicans won’t do to display their contempt for humanity…or at least the humanity that’s not filthy rich?

It seems the working class Congressional districts and states, which at one point were the Dems’ bread and butter, are slipping away from them. Meanwhile, the affluent, educated, and suburban Congressional districts and states, which at one point were the GOP’s bread and butter, are slipping away from them.

Based on Hillary 2016’s statistics, it seems the Dems WOULD HAVE been wise to focus on the more suburban demographics. However, with tax reform passing, said voters may “come home” to the GOP, assuming their anger with Trump cools down due to Trump governing more like a standard GOP President as opposed to a European-style far-right populist.

          • SoCalGal20

Or people will be super pissed that the GOP rammed through a tax bill that among other things guts Obamacare, will make EVERYBODY’S insurance more expensive, gives barely there tax cuts (or no tax cuts at all) for anybody who’s not part of the 1%, has a bunch of goodies for rich people and industries that will not benefit anybody except some company execs. People have this bill figured out. The polling on it is brutal.

          • Paul

If I were a Rust Belt Democrat like Sherrod Brown, Joe Donnelly, Tammy Baldwin, etc., I would focus on that stuff. They’re going to need a LOT more than the metros and cities proper of Columbus, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, etc. They’re going to need the more industrial areas, plus a sizable minority of rural areas.

          • clay

. . . to win the House. The Senate is easier.

          • Blake J Butler

That is correct, rockefeller republicans are trending more towards democrats recently since last year.

WWC democrats that USED to vote for the party in droves, left the party for a reason and it wasn’t “economic anxiety” it was the prejudices and biases that baby huey stroked that put him in the whitehouse including the EC.

The popular line i hear from them is “we didn’t leave the party, the party left us” rhetoric. Meaning when the party branched out and became more inclusive and aware of issues, and not exclusive, they defected over to republicans in droves.

          • Paul

The problem is that the Dems aren’t going to be singing the praises of Reaganesque tax cuts and economic deregulation anytime soon. If they’re getting all of these suburban Reaganites or Rockefeller types as their new base, they’ll be stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Same goes for the GOP and the lower middle class.

        • JCF

Note how—today of all “Epic! Tax! Bill!!!!” days—the stock market went down.

      • Blake J Butler

He’s taking credit for an economy he never created, that he blasted constantly that the growth wasn’t high enough, and that he’d do better. Which is impossible to have higher growth because it has never happened. To add insult to injury he’s repealing obama era regulations in the aftermath of the great recession that were put there for a reason.

Now he has a tax bill that is HIS that HIS PARTY voted for and ONLY THEY wanted it., that no one wanted, except mega rich assholes that deserve to have their heads on spikes marched through the streets.

This won’t be like the ACA which is now popular, but was used in downfall for democrats because of lies the republicans sold to people about obamacare as they kept calling it.

This will be the same thing in reversal, only the tax bill will never be liked on future observations.

        • Paul

While it is true that we’re technically still in “Obama’s economy,” it is also true that one of the cardinal rules of politics is that the new President doesn’t take credit for an economy that’s either thriving or sour within the first year of their administration.

However, we’re nearing the one-year anniversary of Dump’s inauguration. If the economy continues at this pace into the spring, THEN he’ll have more of a moral right to claim it’s “his” economy.

      • Nah, because as wonderful as the economy is, average people are not feeling it — half of Americans do not own stock portfolios. Salaries are still not rising. Inflation is starting to tick up. It is not going to compute. The Dow can go up another 5,000 points in three months and it is not going to improve the lives of average voters in Florida or Michigan. The wonderful economy is benefitting the super rich.

        • clay

And of those who do own stocks, the vast majority have them locked away for retirement.

        • clay

Not going to happen. Angry women are “bitches”. Angry POC voters are “sore losers” or “scary”, depending on the color. And the poor . . . they “don’t know how to govern themselves”. The mythos the news media is filling is one of scary (dramatic) change (dramatic), not one of wise (boring) governance (boring).

The only way your interview panel is going to get heard is if the question is, “Why did you bring down the president?”

      • SoCalGal20

He doesn’t even have to send them to a red or purple state, just strategically send them to red districts. CA22 (Devin Nunes’ district), for example, could use an influx of angry Puerto Rican voters. Or WI01 (Paul Ryan’s district).

      • Blake J Butler

That’s what the article says. Keep in mind with the mass that is already in Florida and likely will not be the end.

We don’t have any earthly data as to where else they may be going, but most of them should go to Florida as it is closest to Puerto Rico.

        • Hank

I am sure, that many are also going to NYC, as there is a large Puerto Rican population there already. So, they will join their relatives.
However, if we can get 50,000 in some of the less populated counties and districts in Central Florida, we can flip the state permanently!!!

    • safari

I’m for it. We need to know the genetic landscape of viruses.

This type of work came to a head a few years back when researchers discovered that it was possible to create a super-flu within about eight generations of being passed through ferrets (they’re the model system for the flu). Because of the nature of the research, the publication was held up because of its implications. In the end, the peer-review article was published but explicitly left out the genetic sequence the researchers discovered.

However, 8 generations is very quick — which means that particular flu virus that’s already in nature is very close to being something quite nasty.

      Now we know.

      • Treant

Well, yeah, but in eight generations I’ve stabilized an open-pollinated cultivar of Salvia splendens.

But it’s not going to happen in nature due to the very specific (and very human) selection process.

      • -M-

To be fair they just figured out how to make a bird flu transmissible ferret to ferret. It wasn’t necessarily particularly super or good at spreading among humans.

        • safari

          Oh you and your details.

          • -M-

i do .25 vermouth, .5 campari, 1.0 gin. not traditional, but suits my tastes. and campari is pretty delicious on its own, btw, or with a splash of soda. it’s bitterness is more like burnt orange than herbal bitters (e.g, angostura etc.)

Before the studios got all up in Youtube’s grill about copyright you could find vids of movies that were translated into one language, then translated back to english. Sometimes they were black market movies that were translated and restranslated multiple many many times.

They were freakin hysterical. Some friends and I used to watch them and try to play guess the localism. Some bits and pieces of the culture, or one of the cultures, it was translated to would pop out.

Ok, that’s my uber-geek cred affirmed for the day. Turkish Star Wars is still on youtube, it’s one of the ones that went through the multiple translation mill.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’ve actually heard of that movie. I just checked it out, saw a few minutes and it looks like the budget is $2.

    • edrex

dub is annoying. i’d rather read.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

A common complaint I hear from dub fans is that they can’t read that fast or think of it as taking away from seeing background detail. I’ve fortunately been able to read quickly enough so it’s not a problem.

        • Lumpy Gaga

It sneaks up on you when you sometimes realize that you’ve been reading the movie for, say, 30 minutes, and not actually watching it.

I say, if you can detect that the dubbing is comically off from the spirit of the film and the acting, then you realize how much you’re missing by just reading it. So then it’s time for judgment call. I leave captioning on for more and more English-language content in my dotage and I sometimes feel like I’ve been caught out looking at boobs: “My eyes are UP HERE!”

      • William

The subtitles for ‘La Vie en Rose’ were terrible. I couldn’t read them against the background.

        • edrex

that does happen. and that is annoying as well. i just like to hear people speak in the language that was intended or filmed.

    Nevada (Dean Heller is unpopular)

    Wait. What?

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. — Control of Virginia’s legislature hung in limbo Wednesday after a three-judge panel declined to certify the recount of a key House race, saying that a questionable ballot should be counted in favor of the Republican and tying a race that Democrats thought they had won by a single vote.

“The court declares there is no winner in this election,” Newport News Circuit Court Judge Bryant L. Sugg said after the panel deliberated for more than two hours.

State law says the winner of a tied House race will be determined by lot — leaving the fate of the chamber to what is essentially a coin toss.

James Alcorn, chairman of the State Board of Elections, said the winner will probably be chosen by placing names on slips of paper into two film canisters and then drawing the canisters from a glass bowl (or his bowler hat). He said he is conferring with staff to figure out the date and method.

And that one was the Dem’s.]

            ^^This^^
            A lot this

        • safari

For crime series I like (on Netflix), in order increasing Nihilism:

I liked the first few seasons of mystery series Shetland. It’s like Wallander, but the first seasons are a single mystery. It’s on Netflix.

Happy Valley is a crime drama series I like. It’s centered around a jaded female police officer who deals with both issues in her personal and professional life. There’s no mystery, though, since the series shows both the pro- and an-tagonists. There’s just enough comedy to make the tragedy okay.

I really do like Wallander, but the ending of the series let me upset. The English version is on Netflix. Originally it is Swedish. It is also a mystery series but episodic. It’s not absolutely bleak (asterix), but largely enjoyable. I just hated the ending.

There’s always Broadchurch, which stars David Tenant. It’s quite good, but slow. And near completely nihilistic. The first season centers around the death of a young teenager and the investigation of a small town’s citizens. The second season continues with the aftermath and begins to flush out the lead character’s background.

Then there’s Hinterland. It’s a series in which each scene is shot in both English and Welsh, though I’ve only seen the English version. (In Welsh, the series title is actually The Dusk.) As you can guess, it takes place in Wales. Each episode is a murder mystery with the over arching plot line of finding out why the main character is the way he is. I really like it, and find the male lead attractive. But it is pure nihilism.

          • safari

In less the Nihilistic vein, I liked what I saw of “The Bletchley Circle”. It’s a mystery series where the protagonists are former female code breakers from WW2 who now find themselves bored with domestic life.

I tried to watch “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”. I feel I could like it. I just didn’t get into it. The protagonist is an outgoing 1920s “swinger” type gal in a misogynistic world. I couldn’t binge watch it, though.

“Romsemary and Thyme” is a murder mystery series about two professional gardeners who find themselves solving crimes. It’s like Murder She Wrote, but with two women who garden. It’s good, but can be repetitive if watched like a dozen episodes at a time. It’s older.

I spent some time watching “Midsomer Murders”. It is episodic and has two male leads: an inspector and his partner. It’s good, and has been on for *ages*.

Finally there is “Murdoch Mysteries”. It’s a 19th century mystery series that’s episodic. It centers around a detective and his crew (including a woman) who solve crimes at the end of the 19th century as the old ways of crime fighting come to an end. It is enjoyable, but more popcorn than award winning.

          • safari

Think of “Murdoch Mysteries” as CSI: 19th Century.

        • greenmanTN

FUX will be flogging “Crooked” all the way to the swearing-in of Kamala Harris! 😉

NB: just one possibility. I entertain myself creating 2020 tickets. “Harris/Kennedy” was one I came up w/ last night. “Brown/Becerra” was one I fancied today (i.e., Sherrod/Xavier). Try it, it’s fun! Maybe “Gillibrand/Ellison”? “Booker/Lieu” flows right off the tongue! [And of course, the more names you suggest, the more you can mix and match. 😉 ]

        • Max_1

          Harris/Kennedy… I’d back that ticket.

        • greenmanTN

I’m hoping for Hannibal Lecter 2020. Sure he’s a serial killer but he’s still better that the cretin in office now plus, as much as possible, he only eats the annoying and rude.

(I have a whole theory about why we started to see “good” serial killers like Lecter and Dexter in our entertainment. Like Germany did in the buildup to Nazism with stories of evil masterminds and doppelgängers, we normalized psychopathy as a buildup to freeing our id and electing one.)

          • JCF

Huh: I never thought of Lecter as in any way “good” (which is why—and not just for the absence of La Foster—I avoided that whole “Hannibal” business). [And I didn’t watch “Dexter”]

          • greenmanTN

By the time Hannibal (the book) came out he was eating the rude and deserving for the most part. Dexter is the embodiment of the NRA’s standard defense, that the only defense against a bad serial killer (our police and judiciary being useless what with those pesky laws) is a “good” serial killer.

        • not booker, yes Lieu.

You guys keep threatening that’s going to happen, it never does though. When you were making threats about the Supreme Court last year, I just rolled my eyes, and voted Green Party.

Just don’t do anything that requires remembering.

        • think of it as a Blessing. you’ll literally live twice as long as most of us. some people, like some types i met at different points in my life, were very annoyed that they couldn’t avoid sleep. you’ve got the time for crafts, writing, sex, whatever hobby you prefer. most of us are wiped out without a routine 5-8hrs daily. if you hadn’t mentioned this issue, i would’ve said you’re an intelligent, interesting, observant kind of person. if it affects your mood, use some of that extra time for some counseling. the internet is your friend, but the people who mentioned TV aren’t wrong. as a fellow non-sleeper, i find TV really does slow the brain down.

      • another_steve

I was on Ambien for a while. I occasionally didn’t sleep it off.

For anyone who has done Ambien and didn’t sleep it off – ‘nuf said.

        • safari

Ambien is my favorite drug. I can never take it again. Never mix it with alcohol. Ever.

          • another_steve

My mama was on Ambien (or its predecessor) for many years, when I was child.

She also presented (as I do) the next morning as a zombie.

            A genetic curse.

          • safari

Ambien turns off my concerns but doesn’t shut me off. That’s bad. In fact, I haven’t found a sleeping drug that doesn’t do that to some extent. For me, though, it makes *everything* seem like a good idea. And for some reason I’m *very* prone to abusing it. I’ve never experienced anything like it, and I don’t want to play around with it since it lead to some of the worst experiences of my life.

Lunesta is like Ambien but not nearly as stupifying for me. It also makes everything taste like tin foil, so I know it’s working. Ambien makes everything taste *so good*.

Sonota, also in the same class as Ambien and Lunesta, metabolizes quickly. I need time to shut off my brain, so it does nothing for me. This might work for you. It is *very* short acting.

Xanax isn’t in the same class as the above, but binds to the same site in the brain. Klonopin and Vallium are in the same class. Sonata Restoril is a drug in this class marketed specifically for sleep. I’d rather take Xanax since it’s more relaxing, which is what I need.

There’s a new type of drug called Belsomra that just came on the market (2015, so no generic) that is different from what’s been available before. I have no idea about it.

          • another_steve

So you’re basically a walking talking encyclopedia on this shit, safari.

I exist, basically, as a living zombie.

They’ve sent me to countless sleep centers and prescribed countless devices and sleep meds for me. I still don’t sleep.

I will die soon, I’m sure – but my hope is that my friends will remember me fondly.

          • safari

            I’ll remember you fondly.

I’m an encyclopedia because I don’t sleep well. I have a CPAP to keep my blood oxygen levels above nearly-dead, but that never helped me shut off for the night.

          • another_steve

I tried the CPAP thing. I’m one of the population of sleep apnea-ists who can’t endure it.

I’m ready for death. I’ve done all the paperwork and briefed my husband.

            Whatever comes next, comes.

          • greenmanTN

I have struggled with insomnia for most of my life. At one point I was nightly taking enough OTC sleep meds (Benadryl) to put down a bull elephant, 300-400mg. (One of the small pills is 25mg and extra strength is 50mg.) And still couldn’t sleep. I think my record is about 72 straight hours without sleep- none.

Something had to give, and what changed for me is my attitude toward sleep. I sleep when I sleep, in the knowledge that I *will* sleep eventually because there’s no other choice, the body will say “enough” and shut down. So I stopped worrying about it and, strangely, it turned out that worrying about not being able to sleep was one of the things keeping me up at night and I started sleeping better, but in shifts, 2 or 3 hours here, 3 or 4 hours there. I stopped calculating how many hours of sleep I’d had in the last 2 days or whatever.

But that’s me, and I won’t do that annoying recitation of “you should try this” that people do to those who can’t sleep. (Or did I just do that above? *shrug* Whatever.)

I don’t know the particulars of your health or situation but I hope what I’m hearing about is just depression talking, not that depression is anybody’s idea of a picnic. (And there are lot so of reasons to be depressed these days. I know I am.) But it’s a selfish thought because yes, I would miss you.

So I guess what I’m saying is, Stevela, don’t MAKE me send the reanimated corpse of Molly Picon to kick your ass while singing Yiddish musical theater! Because I *WILL* do it! 🙀

            Feel better, my friend.

          • another_steve

Lol. Thank you for your beautiful comment, greenman. I process very slowly these days. I had to read your comment several times.

            Thank you.

          • greenmanTN

In case it wasn’t clear, zombie Molly Picon is supposed to kick your ass until you cheer up or at least don’t sound so fatalistic. I think that got lost in translation, but what do you expect? I haven’t had a lot of sleep! 😉

          • zhera

You just described my sleep ‘pattern’. A little bit here, a little bit there. I go to bed when I feel like it, day or night.

It’s really hard though when I’m so tired I can’t open my eyes, yet my brain won’t let me fall asleep. THAT’s when depression becomes dangerous. 🙁

          • JCF

You BETTER be kidding, a_s! (“You’re needed, Mrs Peel”)

          • whollyfool

            Ok, you are worrying me.

I’m hoping you’re not serious, but on the chance you are I’m going to throw out some ideas. I think that I understand that the doctors are out of ideas. As much as I hate it, I’ve had to resort to alternative therapies when I’ve exhausted the normal avenues.

Have you tried massage, acupuncture and I know this sounds weird, but Reiki? I once had a Reiki therapist turn off my racing thoughts and it was wonderful.

I’m pretty science-based, but when medicine has failed, you have to start looking at things that have not been tested.

Something out there will fix this, we just need to find it.

          • another_steve

Lol. Love you, whollyfool. 😉 Much of my humor is dry. Very dry. In real life I have (what I think/hope is) a fairly decent attitude.

Love you much, Steve of the dry British humour! 🙂

I first assumed humour, then got worried. I know what lack of sleep can do.

Rule #1: Stop Trying to Sleep!
Rule #2: You do need to get off the computer, though. Even color-adjusted, the screen is likely to keep you awake. TV is FAR more sleep-inducing…regardless of content!

I said this just last night (to someone w/ teeth pain): I recommend an easy chair, and light blanket. Again, do NOT try to sleep! Just relax. If sleep happens, it happens. If not, let you mind wander to NICE (though, ahem, not stimulating—No Twinks, a_s!) thoughts. Enjoying lovely thoughts is still a restorative act, even if not sleep. Ahhhh….

      • JCF

Rule 3: re the Twinks though. If a nice Big O would help, then take care of that, first (of course!).

I have a whole theory about why we started to see “good” serial killers like Lecter and Dexter in our entertainment. Like Germany did in the buildup to Nazism with stories of evil masterminds and doppelgängers, we normalized psychopathy as a buildup to freeing our id and electing one, someone who “wouldn’t take any shit” from snowflakes like women, gays, the sick and elderly, other races/religions, etc. That trend started while Bush 2 was in office and was society’s way of preparing to elect Trump or someone like him.

(And by “we,” I of course mean the fuckwads who voted for him in such large numbers.)

    Discuss! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b0332e8a22e05b36f30730c3c12ea0946f075f944a2a108e4ff1fc2a49657e32.jpg

    • Treant

I always assumed that it was a buildup of fury that led to a simple desire to wipe out people we didn’t like and who were clearly evil. And using those characters, we weren’t having to worry about nasty things like ethics or guilt. Dexter dates from the middling-end of the Bush administration, and continued right up until the economy finally stopped being a complete disaster (and a little beyond).

Less a fascist indicator, the 1% and ruling class should have taken it as a warning. Again, with what’s happening now, if you see a resurgence in these things, or interest in Jesse James or any of the other “Robin Hood” style characters (however romanticized and however little they have to do with actual history), you’ll know what’s bubbling in the American psyche.

In fact, if you have any ideas along those lines, this would be a very good time to flesh those out and start presenting them.

I’m already seeing the bubble starting with SyFy’s Happy!, which features Chris Meloni as a severely amoral (but incredibly hot) anti-hero who’s rapidly dragging a child’s imaginary friend down to his level. To a good cause, but the body count in the first two episodes was around 8.

      • greenmanTN

I’ll have to let that percolate a bit. One thing that is clear to me is that the GOP is the party of fear, hate, anger, and resentment, particularly class resentment, but they aim that anger downward toward the most vulnerable in our country, the least powerful. The poor, the non-white, the sick, the elderly, the female, the gender nonconformists, the gays, etc etc etc.

I mean the SCOTUS has ruled that money itself is “speech,” for fucks sake, in what will go down as one of the most destructive rulings ever, an offensive, regressive decision that puts a huge amount of political power and influence into the hands of the wealthiest, to wield against those who would challenge their supremacy. Just look at two different movements, the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street, and compare how they were treated by the media and the police. Look how easily a group like ACORN is taken down for following the LAW (turning in voter registrations they know to be bogus because they have to) while the NRA reigns supreme despite the vast majority of Americans believing in some form of gun control.

  • billbear1961

I just posted this to someone on Political Wire who makes it clear he knows we’re dealing with American traitors:

Why do you, as a people, accept the authority of these people in your government who you can clearly see are traitors? That’s what I don’t understand. Just as I don’t understand why you don’t hold baldfaced liars accountable, why you don’t put pressure on serious journalists and politicians still loyal to democracy, to the rule of law, to the truth and human decency, to expose liars and drive them from the public stage with their tails between their legs.

After everything you’ve seen them do and everything you’ve seen them plotting to do, how can you continue to allow them to exercise any authority? They’re CRIMINALS. They serve only themselves and the very rich. They’re engaged in a coup to overthrow the rule of law and establish a one-party dictatorship in the service of the super rich, but ALL you do is talk about ELECTIONS. I just don’t understand you, the American people. This can’t wait for elections, elections which will likely be at LEAST as compromised as they were in 2016. They’re undermining your democracy right NOW. Your power to act–to protest to stop crimes, corruption, and mindless cruelty–is not limited to election time! In this democratic republic, the Sovereign Authority is YOURS–exercise it. Start acting like free citizens, not like the subjects–the abject slaves–of a tyranny!

    • JCF

Really not liking your tone here, Bill. If you would like to come “South of the Border” to be sole caregiver for my 97 year old father, I’m sure I could do more to physically throw myself upon the barricades/directly into the *cogs* of the Drumpf Machine. Failing that, I do what I can. That’s just my story—every other (U.S.) American here has their own.

Obviously, if anyone has a reason why he or she cannot protest—they’re not physically or psychologically able, or they have obligations that make it difficult or impossible—that’s different, but I’m telling you right now that if you, as a people, do not begin soon to protest, in massive and relentless demonstrations, coupled with economic measures, these fascists are going to destroy your democracy. You don’t think so? Well, carry on, as a people, as you have; and we’ll see. I know, after living in Canada for 30 years—and CJ, from experience, confirms this belief, certain that it’s true—that if what’s happening in the U.S. were happening HERE, in Canada, people would be in the STREETS.

I said WEEKS ago that if I kept posting here, it would be just a question of time before I started getting reactions like yours. I said it would be best if I stopped posting because IF I spoke my mind, I would make myself hateful to many here.

I must turn my attention now to the preservation of a country—a true democracy—where baldfaced lying is not tolerated, either by the public, the politicians, or the media; in any case, certainly not as it is in the godforsaken U.S., and pray that your gangster oligarchs, who have destroyed you, will not succeed in destroying us, when they turn their greedy eyes north of the border.

Goodbye and good luck. God KNOWS you have no leadership, cannot depend on your corporate press or any of your other pitiful and failing institutions. The U.S. serves as a WARNING to every true democracy on this planet of what it MUST avoid if it wishes to preserve its freedoms and simple human decency.

After everything I’ve said on this site over the years, to have my words interpreted as a deliberate insult aimed at those among you who, for whatever valid reason, cannot take part in demonstrations to save your democracy astonishes me. If THAT is what you think of me after all these years, I have nothing more to say.

        • zhera

Don’t stop, Billy Boo. You are doing what YOU can, from Canada. I can’t do much either, from Norway, so venting my frustrations here is what I do.
JCF took your post as a personal slight but I think he understand where we’re coming from. I also think he’s very frustrated with the state of things, just like everyone else.

          • billbear1961

JCF actually relieves me of a considerable burden, Zhera–this business is eating me up alive. It has begun to affect my health; so, I was thinking about stopping, anyway.

          • zhera

But don’t leave us! We needs yous!

          • billbear1961

Zhera, if I stay, I will continue to say the same things, and people here will begin to HATE me. There are many on Political Wire who cannot stand me, but they, while there are some I like and get along with, aren’t friends I love.

          • zhera

Nobody hates you, Bill. If they do they’ll block you and then the problem is solved for all parties. Don’t focus on the negative here. We are many who are frustrated with the US, and who don’t understand how it can continue. WE NEED YOU!

          • Karl Dubhe 2

If you stay and continue to argue, your argument will be refined, and be made better by the experience.

          • billbear1961

There are already two people who agree with JCF–there will be more; so, that’s that.

            Take care!

          • zhera

But I agree with you, and there MUST be more people who do. Don’t let this ruin JMG for you, Bill. You’re not hated, I refuse to believe that JCF hates you for what you wrote. He’s a sensible person.

This place won’t be the same without you, Bill! ♥

Bill, I love you, but you do what I used to do. 🙂

Trump’s not the entirety of their problem. Just protesting him and his election is dealing with a symptom of the actual problem, not dealing with the problem itself.

I wish I had a solution, other than demanding that the laws of the land be followed, I don’t. 🙁 People need what FDR used to call the four freedoms, and we don’t. Not in the USA, nor in Canada, nor in any other nation.

          • billbear1961

Karl, if you look at my posts, you’ll see that I’m condemning the entire Republican party, saying that the authority of ALL these fascist traitors, who are destroying American democracy, must be rejected.

            So long–take care!

          • Karl Dubhe 2

I have, and it’s not going to be overthrown in a day, or a year or three.

            De-Nazification takes time, it’ll happen.

            Please don’t go.

          • billbear1961

            XO

        • it’s a little more complicated than can be solved with protesting, bill. that’s part of the problem that a lot of us are facing now, and are unsure what to do next. remember the protests during the spin up to the conflict in iraq? i was there, along with MILLIONS of others, in dozens of cities all over this country. peaceful, serious, well attended… and totally ignored by the media. basically, if you were not there or didn’t know someone who was, you didn’t hear about them. obviously no politician cared that they happened. the war went on, cheney walks free, and millions are dead.

JCF is not in a minority, in the sense that dedicating your life to protesting is expensive. it costs money to be unemployed here.

there are other considerations as well. the left here is attacked in every way, by people who are well paid to see that it remains mostly unorganized and ignored by politicians. corporations hire clever people to manipulate what should be a populist process, to reflect the desires of major shareholders. i hope that doesn’t sound too foily to you, because it’s true.

anyway, i suppose these all sound like weak excuses to you but really, it is complicated. the main issue is the power of money. we screwed up here and let it accumulate into the hands of a few nutjobs and are now dealing with that. a lot of us are just decent, ordinary people who never could’ve imagined that those rich people could be so hateful, selfish and callous about the future.

          • billbear1961

No, your explanations are solid–I know that literally everything is stacked against you.

          • billbear1961

Protests like the Women’s March, but on a MUCH more frequent basis, are the only REAL check I can think of remaining to you to counter or restrain the ongoing fascist coup.

Your media are disgusting. Their failure to stand up to the right’s media LIE machine, their failure to hold ALL liars accountable, their “both-siderism,” their false equivalences, their normalization of Trump and fascism and their savaging of Hillary for daring to do THEIR jobs FOR them when she denounced as deplorable those on the far right supporting him–this abject failure of American “journalism” is, more than any other single cause, aside from the accumulation of too much money in too few hands, the MAIN reason for the current crisis.

There is a coup underway: the gangster oligarchs’ lackeys have full control of your government and are destroying what’s left of your democracy. The Democrats are imperfect weaklings, but the GOP are total and monstrous SELLOUTS. The authority of these obvious criminals–these coupists–MUST be REJECTED.

          • JT

BB, I think both JCF and CD are out of line in their responses to you. One takes it as a personal insult, when it’s obvious that you meant what you said to apply generally, with exceptions in unusual circumstances allowed. The other effectively does too, talking about reasons why people may not be able to devote their lives to protest and citing problems for protests in past cases where circumstances and popular opinion were different. Again, that is not what you said should be done. Both of these responses, without anything said by way of qualification in response to your admonition, look like defeatism, which is exactly the wrong thing to allow yourself to display at this point. I hope they are not meant as defeatism.

          • those pesky reasons! if only they would just disappear.

          • JT

Reasons that are no good shouldn’t have been cited in the first place.

          • billbear1961

Thanks for your support, JT. I’m glad you and some others understood the point I was trying to make.

I’ll miss some of you a LOT!

          • JT

I wouldn’t let the reactions of some individuals deter you. What you provide, both politically and musically, is definitely something needed here.

Ooh some Dems are having a press conference to express their support for Mueller and the investigation.

Yes, let’s make the whole think look more partisan…

      • zhera

Are you blaming the Dems for the lack of GOPs who support Mueller?

        • BobSF_94117

No, I’m suggesting that a statement by the left wing of the Dems in the House, without fuller support is not helpful. It just feeds the LIE that Mueller’s investigation is partisan.

          • JT

Yeah, right. Dems should just say nothing. Nice tactic.

          • BobSF_94117

Dems should say something, A LOT OF THEM at the same time. If you can’t get an overwhelming majority to say something so obvious, you’re not doing it right.

Nonsense. You omit consideration of the chickenshit factor.

    Can
it become any funnier? Yes, when people believe this kind of crap and
start demanding more investigation about Obama’s birth.
    Personally, I
like the theory that D. Trump was born in Argentina as the illegitimate
son of an escaped Nazi extermination camp guard. The mother was duped
into a sexual liaison after searching for a prospective mate through the
lonely hearts section of Buenos Aires newspaper, Argentinisches
Tageblatt. The infant was afterwards bought by and smuggled into the
States by Fred and Mary Anne Trump, who both wanted another son.

      • SoCalGal20

If Dems inform the country with all their talking points and ads and Dem candidates use it to run on then, no, Dems won’t be blamed by most people.

Too bad your desire to not feel like a mindless member of the group-think herd doesn’t extend to actually voting in ways that serve the people who elected you.

What’s the matter, Jeff? You don’t want to have photo evidence of your vote?
