Sen. Joe Manchin: Trump Begged Me To Switch Parties

Mediaite reports:

Sen. Joe Manchin described President Donald Trump’s efforts to court him in a Politico “Off Message” podcast out Tuesday morning — which ranged from trying to sell the Democrat on Obamacare repeal to even attempting to persuade him to switch parties.

Manchin, a Democratic senator in red-state West Virginia, revealed that the president repeatedly pushed him to switch parties and become a Republican during “the transition last year and several times since.”

The West Virginian lawmaker said that he declined Trump’s advances, telling the president: “You need more Democrats like me, you don’t need Republicans.”

  • bkmn

What surprises me is that Manchin didn’t change parties.

Well, IF it’s a just world, it would be like stepping on board the Titanic as it approaches the iceberg.

  • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

Trump begged you? Did he say he’d ‘do anything’?

Gee, do you think Sen Manchin (D-WV) is up for 2018 reelection in a state Trump won by 42 points?

  • William

Manchin is about a 4 on the Marcus Bachmann scale.

    • The Professor

      ^^ For the WIN!

    • Reality.Bites

Marcus Bachmann can use a scale? A people scale?

      • William

        Two Bachmanns equal a Liberace.

  • Ninja0980

Your daily reminder that even though this guy is NOT someone you would send a Holiday card to or have lunch with, he’s better then any Republican.

    • jerry

I’ve actually known him and his wife for 30+ years, and receive a holiday card from them each year. No, he’s not my favorite Democrat by any means, though his wife is actually very liberal. But in the political climate over the past 18 years in WV, that may be about the best you can hope for.

      • JCF

I can’t quite bring myself to upvote you (though I know you may be correct).

        • jerry

Pragmatically speaking, I’d rather have Manchin, who won’t vote for the GOP’s “tax reform” or their “health insurance” scams, than the utterly corrupt Shelley Capito. Other than appointments, I don’t think he’s voted with the GOP at all this year.

  • TampaZeke

The only thing surprising about that is the fact that Manchin didn’t take him up on it.

For a Democrat to tell TRUMP, “You need more Democrats like me” says it all!

    • A Democrat like Manchin — isn’t that a Republican?

      • Gustav2

He would have changed parties if he thought the R’s would still be in the majority in 2019.

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

          Ding, ding, ding!!

    • Ninja0980

We do need more Democrats like him in some areas, even though they’ll do and say things that will make you want to throw your computer threw the window sometimes.

      • Reality.Bites

I don’t do windows. Would it be OK if I threw it through an Apple?

        • JCF

You’ve got to then (successfully) boot up the computer, to complete the Case of the MacBook Knife.

      • FAEN

I understand they may have to be a little more to the middle or slightly to the right but when I hear from some how we should support Dems that want to run in Montana or some such place on an anti Roe and anti marriage equality platform I draw the fucking line! When will we learn being Republican lite gets us nowhere! We will never win over the Cheeto voters and we should stop trying already.

      • TampaZeke

He didn’t say that “WE” need more Democrats like him. He told TRUMP that TRUMP needs more Democrats like him.

I hope you can see the huge difference.

      • JCF

I HOPE not as bad as Manchin (but I do recognize some will have to be far more conservative—but I refuse to call them “Centrist”! Fie to goal-post-moving revisionism—than I am comfortable with). Hope Doug Jones will be closer to Claire McCaskill, than Manchin…

Don’t trust this asshole! He votes against our well being on a regular basis. He’s essentially a GOP – the prick

  • 2guysnamedjoe

You need more Democrats like me, you don’t need Republicans.

With Democrats like him, who needs Republicans?

  • margaretpoa

I agree. With Democrats like Manchin, who needs Republicans?

    • Guest

He votes with the D’s almost all the time. How many Republicans will do that? In WV, if he is not in that seat now, it would be another R: Capito et al. He is as good as it gets, for now.

  • JWC

Other than getting you face in the press Sir what is your pont

  • Rillion

If we had a couple more Democrats like Manchin instead of Republicans back in 2016, we would have a Justice Garland sitting on the Supreme Court instead of Gorsuck.

  • Stev84

In practice he already is a Republican

    • Guest

He votes with the Democrats 97% of the time, so, no he isn’t.

    • alguien
