Pope Francis: Fake News Is A Very Serious Sin

The Guardian reports:

Pope Francis has criticised journalists who dredge up old scandals and sensationalise the news, saying it’s a “very serious sin” that hurts all involved.

Francis, who plans to dedicate his upcoming annual communications message to “fake news”, told Catholic media on Saturday that journalists perform a mission that is among the most “fundamental” to democratic societies.

But he reminded them to provide precise, complete and correct information and not to provide one-sided reports.

The pope said: “You shouldn’t fall into the ‘sins of communication:’ disinformation, or giving just one side, calumny that is sensationalised, or defamation, looking for things that are old news and have been dealt with and bringing them to light today.”

Your entire organization is fake news. Shut up you old fart.

King of the Boytouchers has spoken!

  • Harveyrabbit

Sooo just forget about all those past news reports about priests and clergy abusing kids. Got it. Although it may take a while to forget over 7 million of them. At least a little longer than the .5 seconds it took to find them. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/565a1c72b8c543de35bb12b7a85956840759cd66741a542c598b20f42e62396d.jpg

    • Tawreos

Is that how long it took for google to find them or for Franky to forget them?

  • Tony Adams

Right. And it took four journalists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) to tell a mostly second hand story with lots of fake parts just to construct a religion out of hearsay.

    • GayOldLady

There is no historical evidence that the Author/s of those 4 Gospels were named Matthew, Mark, Luke and John or that their authors knew the subject of their gospels. There is no historical evidence that jesus christ ever existed. There is no historical evidence to support any of the stories in the New Testament.

      • Tony Adams

Well, there is a little bit of evidence from non-apologist writers, and we can trace those gospels time-wise back to the first couple of centuries AD, but they were reassembled and embellished right off the bat by those who were trying to “sell” Jesus. A careful exegesis by scholars points to a common source that those writers had. It is called the “Q Source.” We don’t have it. There are also apocryphal gospels that date back to those same early years. Bottom line: don’t take those gospels seriously when you are looking for historical accuracy. Unfortunately, Roman Catholicism demands belief in the details, making no distinction between fact and fiction.

        • ZRAinSWVA

The Gospel Q is actually a fascinating read. I highly recommend it!

      • David Walker

Then you need to read “Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal.” It’s more convincing than the bible, and better written, too. (And be prepared for honest-to-goodness out loud laughter…probably not to be read during, say, a memorial service.)

  • Tawreos

I wonder is about to come out about the catholic church that would make him take steps to specify not to bring up old matters. BTW old matters that have been dealt with are relevant if the new behavior is similar to the old.

Rule #1 for journalists – don’t believe anything the RCC says.

  • crewman

You shouldn’t fall into the ‘sins of communication:’ disinformation, or giving just one side, calumny that is sensationalised, or defamation,

So when the Catholic Church conspired to hide child rape, to blame accusers, to deny the events occurred, to hide money churches had so they wouldn’t have to pay victims, etc. that was not right after all?

    • David Walker

I don’t think you read far enough:
“…looking for things that are old news and have been dealt with and bringing them to light today.”
      See? Instant double talk.

    • prixator

No, no, no!! It’s the journalists that reported on the sex crimes that are committing the sin!

looking for things that are old news and have been dealt with and bringing them to light today

  • Do Something Nice

I’m not sure about the sin part, but yes, fake news does an incredible amount of harm.

but…but…but the Trumpsters are saying he is calling the MSM sinners for reporting fake news, not anyone at Fox.

  • stuckinthewoods

Criticized the journalists? What about a politician like Trump labeling the truth as “fake news”?

    • GlennF

Poop Frankie doesn’t care about the actual fake news promoted by right-wing media or corrupt politicians like Drumph.

Frankie only sees an opportunity to co-opt all the talk about “fake news” to try to discredit any legitimate news about the RCCs pedophile crimes against children.

  • IamSmartypants

As an ex-Catholic, I have no love for the church, but can still admit Frankie’s stand against fake news is actually kinda helpful.

    • Friday

If you read it closely enough, it really seems to be more worried about Republicans getting exposed as hypocrites than the disinformation the Right uses. And conveniently tries to claim the real sinners are those who expose abusive clergy when he says ‘from years ago.’ Which of course only the Right thinks gives someone a pass, when the perp is someone else on the Right.

      • IamSmartypants

Fair point. I only read the lead quote. The full story is a bit more…nuanced. And by ‘nuanced’ I mean, weaselly bullshit.

  • andrew

Some of his comments sound good, but I am more than a little suspicious of what motivates his criticism of “looking for things that are old news and have been dealt with and bringing them to light today.” Old news, even things that have been dealt with, can often shine a light on the current behaviors of people, corporations and churches.

This Pope could sure use some secular assistance.

  • Halou

I’m sure he has no ulterior motive when he says journalists should refrain from ‘dredging up old scandals’. /s

Boy, Donnie must absolutely love the fact that his creation of the phrase – Fake News – is now routinely used on a world-wide basis, even the Pope is saying it.

  • JCF

Fake news IS a problem…but this—“looking for things that are old news and have been dealt with and bringing them to light today”—coming from a Pope, ain’t gonna fly.
