FBI Warned Both Trump And Hillary In 2016 That Russian Spies Would Try To Infiltrate Their Campaigns

NBC News reports:

In the weeks after he became the Republican nominee on July 19, 2016, Donald Trump was warned that foreign adversaries, including Russia, would probably try to spy on and infiltrate his campaign, according to multiple government officials familiar with the matter.

The warning came in the form of a high-level counterintelligence briefing by senior FBI officials, the officials said. A similar briefing was given to Hillary Clinton, they added.

They said the briefings, which are commonly provided to presidential nominees, were designed to educate the candidates and their top aides about potential threats from foreign spies.

Clinton tried to keep them out and Trump opened the doors and gave them jobs.

Before or after he was briefed by the FBI?

      • Tawreos

After he was briefed they tried to be subtle about it.

Trump took it as an opportunity rather than a threat. Got the SWOT grid wrong. Again.

  • Lazycrockett

    Drumpf’s response “I know.”

    • HoneyBoySmith

Of course he knew. He was one of them.

I imagine members of his cabal snickering under the breath at this briefing.

“Donald. It’s the FBI, they want to talk about Russians.”

“Oh shit! Oh shit! Oh shit!”

“Something about them infiltrating the campaign…”

      “OH SHIT!!”

“They think something might happen in future and want to give us a heads up just in case”

“Thanks a lot, now my pants are all brown.”

But the FBI is a mess. Trump knows that. He’s got all the best people working for him.

“In the weeks after he became the Republican nominee on July 19, 2016…”

Little did the FBI already know that by then Trump was already compromised.

    It’s not a threat, it’s a feature.

The only defense Donald Trump has left…
… Is the the insanity defense.

    • Mike_in_the_Tundra

      That’s easy enough to prove.

I say holding a high office like the presidency comes with an implicit assumption of competency to stand trial for any criminal acts committed there.

Anything they let him do, we should be able to hold them all liable for.

    • lymis

I doubt we’ll ever find out, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Putin TOLD him to run and either threatened blackmail or offered a deal on some of his debts.

Obama treated Russia like what is was and is – a country that waged war against the US. This is a war that is continuing, as the over 2 million fake comments on Net Neutrality demonstrate.

Obama had much in place, including the equivalent of a digital bomb that was up to Trump to implement. Obama wanted Congress to warn the American public, but any announcement was killed by the Republicans.

So when the right pivots from ‘there was no Russian meddling’ to ‘if there was Russian interference, why didn’t Obama do something?’ They are, as with most things, full of shit.

A length WaPo article from June of last year details the extent to which Obama was trying to protect our nation.

      • JohnJay

Instead, when he is finally out of office (by whatever means), his Trump brand name won’t be worth squat, and his businesses will implode.

  • Joe in PA

It is truly astounding the stupidiy level of the Trump campaign. Did they not have ANY idea that they were being watched? And Sally Yates told them multiple times about Flynn and they did nothing. They thought that by firing her…that would be the end of it? Good grief.

    • boatboy_srq

They have no understanding of others’ competence, honesty or decency, lacking each so completely and so obviously themselves.

From a July 2016 article in the NYTimes:

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Mr. Trump said during a news conference here in an apparent reference to Mrs. Clinton’s deleted emails. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

FBI Warned Both Trump And Hillary In 2016 That Russian Spies Would Try To Infiltrate Their Campaigns

Drumpf campaign: Infiltrate? They’re our main people.

  • clay

“That just proves that FBI has an institutional bias favoring Hillary Clinton!”

  • Gerry Fisher

The Russians had already infiltrated Trump’s campaign well before the convention. Maybe there needs to be some kind of campaign background check done periodically throughout the campaign. This is assuming that both parties are serious about vetting their nominees.

  • Thom Prentice

What about the Israelis? Didn’t the FBI warn them that the Israelis would be trying to infiltrate their ampaigns? Or the Saudis? Didn’t the FBI warn them that the Saudis would be trying to infiltrate their campaigns? Or the Uruguayans? Didn’t the FBI warn them that the Uruguayans would be trying to infiltrate their campaigns? Or the National Air Defense Failure of September 11, 2001. Didn’t the FBI warn the White House that the Saudis would be bombing buildings on September the 11th?

Was it during the campaign or after he was elected that Drumph declined the daily briefings ’cause they were boring?

The intelligence briefing was given. Wouldn’t any organization with integrity take that warning to heart, and do all they could to avoid either comments or contacts with the Russians. . . Er – never mind.
