Trump: Roy Moore Tried But He Should Concede

The Associated Press reports:

President Donald Trump is calling on Republican Roy Moore to concede after he lost the Alabama Senate race. Trump told reporters Friday as he departed the White House: “I think he should. He tried.” Trump endorsed Moore in the contentious race despite the allegations of sexual misconduct that shadowed Moore’s campaign. Moore has been discussing a possible recount.

Yeah, about that recount:

If the final total – including provisional and military ballots – are counted and the difference between the two candidates is less than 0.5 percent, an automatic recount provision could be triggered unless waived by the losing candidate. The state would pay for the recount.

If Jones’ margin of victory is more than 0.5 percent this scenario gets murkier. Alabama’s election handbook spells out several offices that are not included in state laws for contesting elections: lieutenant governor, U.S. senator, and U.S. representative.

There are other provisions, however, that indicate a candidate or political party could request a recount. If Moore is allowed to request a recount, it will be at his expense and that could be considerable.

Merrill told Fortune the cost of recount would be between $1 million and $1.5 million and the total amount must be put up when the request is made. Moore’s most recent financial report showed he had about $636,000 cash on hand.

From the National Review:

Again, just to reach the automatic recount threshold, Moore has to gain about 14,000 votes on Jones. There are only 8,000 active duty military personnel living in Alabama, with another 20,294 in the reserves.

To get the automatic recount, Roy Moore needs roughly half the combined military personnel in Alabama to be deployed overseas right now, for all of them to have voted in this election, and for him to have won all of their votes.

From the conservative Allah Pundit at Hot Air:

Moore convinced himself that God would speak through the results and simply can’t fathom the reality that he wasn’t chosen. That reminds me of his spokesman, Janet Porter, allegedly telling Nancy French in 2008 that she didn’t love America because she preferred the Mormon Mitt Romney to the evangelical Mike Huckabee in the GOP primary.

If Huckabee versus Romney was a litmus test on patriotism and Christian virtue, imagine how much more of a litmus test Moore versus Jones was. Surely the good lord prefers the former to the latter. So how can the vote totals be accurate?

    • I used to work for a CEO and in practice was run ragged by his spoiled miserable wife. He was smarter than Trump (but eventually fired from his job for good reason). It’s not that money can’t buy happiness, but it isn’t going to fix whatever is wrong with you. It can buy therapy, but you have to show up. Money can buy happiness. There are millions (probably a couple billion) people around the world whose main problems in life could be instantly solved with a small to moderate amount of money. But beyond that no. Melania married for money and she can’t even fake being happy in that life. Michelle married a man who she respected and they always look like they are having a good time no matter where they are. The Obamas would look like this with a lot less money and fame.

      • Gerry Fisher

The statistics compiled by Positive Psychologists show that there is a marked increase in happiness exiting poverty level and hitting approximately $30K. There’s a slow-but-steady increase in happiness between $30K and something like $75K-ish. From $75K-ish on up to infinity, it’s virtually a flat line (no correlation).

        • The_Wretched

I’d argue that means we should have a minium income of 30k guaranteed by some mechanism and most getting 75K.

          • Finland is experimenting with a guaranteed minimum wage. We’ll see how that goes.

        • I’ve seen that. I think those numbers are a few years old so they should probably be adjusted upwards a few percentage points, but yes, that research holds up. People making less than $30k are doing without things that would improve their health and well being. (Infrequent dental care, for example) because they just don’t have the money. Above $75k it’s about things that you can’t afford. Also from that study (I think) they found that most people were only aspiring to another $10k or so. In other words, they had most of what they wanted but had their eye on something like a trip to Hawaii that they would do if they got a raise, but otherwise were content.

        Yup. See Melanoma

    • thatotherjean

Not that the Obamas aren’t well supplied with it, though they have a great deal less money than Trump says that he has–not that I believe a word Trump says. But the Trumps have seemed miserable every day he has been in office, while Barack and Michelle seemed to be enjoying themselves.

      • Todd20036

As long as you have enough money for the basics – about $75k a year, more really wont help much

No. They’re making fun of Moore. They think the votes are legit and he should concede

  • That_Looks_Delicious

OMG. Is Moore’s spokesthingy Janet Porter the same person as this Janet Porter?

  • boobert

It’s roy moore! He’s not going to concede EVER.

    • JAKvirginia

At some point though, his concession becomes irrelevant.

      • Natty Enquirer

        Votes count. Concessions don’t.

      • Frostbite

        Yeah. About 3 days ago.

    • gaycuckhubby

The secretary of state will certify the results late in December. And then it’s over. But I do agree that Roy Moore will continue to try and raise money off of this for years.

      • stuckinthewoods

The 67 counties have until Dec 22 to report but could delay. Then the Canvassing Board certifies (they expect to Dec 27-29) but there are other possible delays with the Senate out. Sounds like Jan 3, the last day Alabama can legally certify. It’s to Republicans benefit to stall.

  • Is there any legal necessity for a candidate to concede?

Also, if he wants that election audited and investigated, what they are going to find is widespread illegal attempts to keep African Americans from voting. In other words, he should have lost by more than he did.

    • gaycuckhubby

No. He doesn’t need to concede for Jones to be seated

The vote counts gets close enough dark money will magically appear if it doesn’t come from TV Jesus cultists. I can see law suits preventing Doug Jones taking his seat in the Senate until the next election.

It’s time for ol’ Roy Moore to be dragged off Sassy’s back and sent to the glue factory. Sassy, however, has earned a life of leisure on boundless green pastures.

  • Tawreos

Moore really did believe god called him to be senator, unlike all of the presidential candidates in recent years that have said that just to try to win the evangelicals to their side. Sadly, Moore will be sitting in a car with a teenager telling her about the recount that will happen any day now.

Of course Trump thinks Moore should concede. His role as a useful idiot is now over…

    • The_Wretched

Moore’s failure to concede doesn’t actually have any impact at law. The issue is two fold, however. The AL republicans are the ones in control of ‘certifying’ the vote. They can delay that for a week or two for any or no reason. The second is that Mitch McConnel gets to schedule swearing in ceremonies to seat Senators and Senators cannot vote until they are sworn in. Both sources of bias are unconscionable but that’s where we are.

Am uncertain why the media keeps willingly repeating this Right Wing talking-point – that Moore is entitled to pay for a recount in Alabama. As Rachel Maddox correctly reported, candidates for State Senators entitled to recounts only if margin of victory is less than .5%

C’mon, Donald, fight this! I’m sure some of those 5 million fraudulent votes that you claim were cast for Hillary were cast again in Alabama.

Or is there massive voter fraud only in cases where you significantly lost the popular vote and otherwise you can’t be bothered?

Don’t answer, Donald, we already know.

  • Gianni

Unless I misunderstood, Rachel explained the other night that according to Alabama Election Law, in elections concerning a FEDERAL Office, no recount is available.
