Doug Jones To Roy Moore: You Need To Move On

The Birmingham News reports:

Senator-elect Doug Jones has a message for his Republican challenger Roy Moore: It’s time to move on.

Speaking on the Today Show two days after his upset win, Jones said he is “confident” he won Tuesday night’s election, despite Moore’s refusal to concede until provisional and military votes are counted.

“I understand the frustration a little bit. It is a close race,” Jones said when asked what he’d like to say to Moore. “It’s time to move on. Every race is tough. It’s bitter sometimes. I think this one was one that people in Alabama have now spoke and they decided to heal.

“I think (Moore) would do well to go ahead and let’s get this behind us so that the people of Alabama can get someone in there to start working for them.”

  • Boreal

This is the only time to go high when they go low-when you’ve won and give up nothing.

  • Butch

Expecting Moore to do the right thing?

    • FAEN

    • Gustav2

Now, now, he has to find a way to politely tell Moore to “Fuck Off!”

    • james1200

I wonder what his poor delusional followers (AKA ‘the Mooreons’) going to do now? Oh, I know, they’ll say the Demon-crats stole the election, even though the Republicans control the entire election apparatus in that state.

      • Chucktech

Suffice it to say they won’t just go back inside their churches and shut the fuck up.

        • Lizard

        • james1200

          What if we ask nicely?

    • BlackGayAthetist

If he cared about the people of Alabama he would move on; if he cared about the law he would move on…but he DOES NOT and NEVER HAS

      • David Walker

I’ve become a lot more aware of raging maniacal egotistical bullying lying narcissists in the last year or so, thanks largely to what’s-its-name. When religion is thrown into the mix, whether by the person himself (Moore) or is thrust upon him (the fucking moron), the situation becomes even worse. It seems that with that addition the person assumes the mantle of The New Messiah. What does he care about mere earthly laws?

    • Ham

Someone explain to me why it matters whether or not Roy Moore moves on. Seriously. I’m done with the republican maneuvering. When do we make a conscious effort to just ignore their last minute decisions to change norms into their favor when they don’ get what they want? When do we stop letting them lead the conversation?

  • FAEN

Hey child molester-refreshing returns on a computer didn’t work for Turd Blossom and it isn’t going to work for you.

Now please go the fuck away!

it’s time to get on Sassy and ride off into the sunset or whatever.

    • Tomcat

He still has his grifting to do.

    • RobynWatts

Sassy can kick him off and Moore can just walk.

      • GayOldLady

The way he handles the reins and holds his feet in the stirrups she’s liable to.

  • Tomcat

OT: Sorry for the OT so soon but,,How can you tell a bill is a fuck you bill? when it is released on Friday and voted on Monday. Republicans plan to release the full details of their tax plan by Friday, then hold a vote in the Senate as soon as Monday

    • Jefe5084

If a rethuglican wrote a bill, you can assume it’s a fuck everyone but them and their owners bill.

  • Tawreos

I am a little worried that there will be a “miracle” to put Roy Moore in office. The GOP cheats in any way they can and having a man hold out and have faith in his god to put him where he belongs does not seem like that much of a stretch.

    • Gustav2

Only worry if Ohio Sec of State Jon Husted shows up in AL

    • Reality.Bites

The GOP doesn’t want him in office. They want him gone.

      • Chucktech

        Ah, ah, ah, Senate seat…

      • Tawreos

Hopefully they hate him more than than they hate losing.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Ummm Roy ain’t doin’ nuthin’ until he gets it direct from jesus.

  • Mark McGovern

Shut up Jones and let him keep sputtering on like the idiotic nasty bigoted old prick that is him. This is far too entertaining; like Moore, I’m just not ready to let it go. Still more mileage to be had.

  • james1200

He really believes he was chosen by God to win that Senate seat, that poor delusional fool!

  • Tomcat

Moore will give in as soon as the GOP tax plan passes and trump signs it.

    • Chucktech

You mean Doug Jones will be seated as soon as the GOP tax plan passes and trump signs it.

      • Tomcat

No, Doug Jones will not be seated until Jan of 2018.

        • Chucktech

That, too, but Moore has nothing to do with the tax bill.

And I wouldn’t put it passed the fucktards in Alabamy to not certify Jones in time for the start of the new session, keeping Strange in the seat, OR McConnell pulling some shit like not technically ending this session of the Senate, hence not seating Jones.

          • kareemachan

Too bad you don’t grasp the consequences of elections….

          • UrsusArctos 🐻

Actually the Senate is a continuing body. The rules are standing, as 2/3 of the body is always in office – unlike the house. The Senate can go into recess, but the body doesn’t dissolve like the House.
There is NO reason to not seat Jones now. Except: obstruct.

  • Smokey

Am I correct in thinking that it doesn’t matter if Moore concedes or not? Once the vote is certified Jones is the winner no matter what Roy and his god and horse believe.

    • whollyfool

It will matter to his supporters….

    • Boreal

      Yes. Moore is now irrelevant.

      • AmeriCanadian

I would not count him out so quickly. He ran for governor (lost). He has now run for senator (lost). What’s next? House of Reps? President?

        • clay

          • AmeriCanadian

One hopes. But then he’ll just find a part-time job at some mall.

        • David L. Caster

          The hills.

        • Tawreos

I hope he keeps his track record for any other office he runs for.

        • abqdan

I assume he’ll run in 2020 against Jones. And win. Because by then he’ll have been ‘healed’ and the people of Alabama really are that dumb.

          • UrsusArctos 🐻

Not likely. In Alabama he’s fairly detested outside of deplorables. He lost 3 out of 5 elections. The More Alabamians know Moore, the more they have disliked him.
That “Y’all can’t tell us what to do” pride has a STRONG flip side – “Don’t embarrass us”. Moore has excelled at embarrassing Alabama. They will hold a grudge for a loooong time.
That and demographics are against him. Old white men are thinner on the ground every day.

    • Chucktech

Conceding an election loss is what a well mannered gentleman does. It’s just the polite thing for a gracious person to do after a loss. It most certainly is not a requirement. And it most certainly isn’t Roy Moore.

      • Smokey

Apparently Roy’s momma didn’t done raise him right. Not a gentleman, no manners, no politeness.

        • UrsusArctos 🐻

Oddly enough, most of the Moores are thought of very highly in their community. Now Roy is another matter. As someone who knew him from childhood through adulthood said to me “The Moores are good people and we love them, except Roy. He was an asshole when he was in diapers.” A couple of other Etowah county folks sitting there said things like “That’s unkind. Not wrong, just unkind.” 😀
Apparently he’s never gotten over starting poor and feels “superior” to those who knew him as a poor kid.
Hey, it’s the south. 3? degrees of separation and all that. Yes I have Etowah county family.

          • Librarykid

and vertical family trees in the case of the Moores.

        • JCF

“Not a gentleman, no manners, no politeness.”

There’s a whole slew of teenage girls who could tell you that.

      • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

Exactly, and it’s not like Doug Jones is a hated Yankee, or notorious sodomite (like us). He’s a fellow Alabamian, you’d think that would count for something.

      • Librarykid

Jones might understand the frustration, but he will never understand the insanity.

    • Slim Compersion

Exactly. But as always, Roy Moore is going to take every opprtunity to grandstand that he can. It’s all he has.

    • PlutoAnimus

Funny how Jones is now playing the Stuart Smalley role here.

    • Kruhn

And the Alabama Secretary of State is dragging his feet to make sure the certification is slow-walked!

In fast, he’s already misquoting Alabama law to sow confusion.

  • netxtown

Now Doug-y. Roy follows the word of gawd…and “Concede” nor “Loser” are in the stone tablets….

  • Ninja0980

I would tell him to fuck off but that’s me.

  • Chucktech

Hey, Roy! Git back on ya ho-werse and ride owff into the sun sa-yet. Yer towst.

Submitted for your consideration… just some of the events that have taken place this year, which I believe is part of the resistance…please feel free to add your own:

    Moonlight – 2017 Best Picture

Wonder Woman – Highest Grossing Superhero film by a female

Government – Women, Sikhs, Muslims and Transgender elected in record numbers… and firsts

Defeat of Roy Moore for Senate – Black women significant in Doug
    Jones victory

Report of sexual harassment and assault – women are tired of
y’alls shit and are not taking it anymore

Danica Roem: First Transgender person elected to a state legislature!

This is a problem with many living in the South. “Waving the bloody shirt” refers to remembering the Civil War, also referred to as War of Northern Aggression where brother fought brother and almost all the men in the south were killed or maimed. Politicians still ‘wave the bloody shirt’ in the South to garner support.

  • ColdCountry

I think Moore has the same problem that a lot of his ilk have. He really, truly, deep in his soul believes that he is right, and that he wants what God wants. To admit defeat, to entertain the idea that he’s wrong, would be to admit that his whole world view is wrong, and that can be a terrifying thing. So he can’t think that this is God’s Will. He must act as though it is a victory by Satan that he must fight against.

  • Blake Mason

What has happened is that the right wing have pegged victories to “god’s will”… I am certain they really believed that Trump would lose… but when he won, IT HAD TO BE GOD!, CAUSE WELL LOOK AT TRUMP.

So now the believe that it doesn’t matter how low you are on the moral totem pole…. God will reward you no matter if you are a misogynistic pussy grabber… or a child predator… as long as you spout God and Jesus when your mouth opens… you will win.

  • worstcultever

Thanks Joe for posting this Doug interview which is really worth everybody’s time. He’s saying everything he should be saying at this point. Really a smart guy, and a real consolation prize following the horrible loss of Franken. I hope he goes to town in the Senate – why not use his national name power to really kick some ass? Hell, Jones 20.

(Shallow – I love his smile (or should I say, smahl). He’s exactly the unsexy kind of middle-age+ guy I find sexy.)

    • BeaverTales

I’d vote for him for president too. I never thought I’d say that about an Alabama politician in this lifetime….but then again, I thought I’d never see a black president in this lifetime either. He has a brain, humility and real class. His fellow Christians should be taking note.

      • UrsusArctos 🐻

Back when the South had Democrats there were some good ones. Things went off the rails with the “Blue Dogs”. I’m glad they got their asses handed to them. I told my last Blue Dog congress critter that he’d be gone before long because he was playing GOPer-lite and those type of folks want real GOP. I now have a Teatard congressman. Damn, being right isn’t so much fun.

        • BeaverTales

Jimmy Carter was a Christian Peanut farmer from Georgia, with an engineering degree. One of the most decent and intelligent but politically unsavvy men to become president. Both Carter and Jones were southern raised and southern educated. They seem cut from the same fine cloth

    • UrsusArctos 🐻

His speaking is Clintonesque. The difference is that you don’t hear constant scandal around him. I asked around quite a bit among North Alabama relatives and friends and heard nothing but good about him. I’m hoping that he is the real deal and not a façade.

      • AmeriCanadian

I’m not sure reality counts any longer. If he ends up being considered a “threat”, more dirt will be dug up than on Oak Island.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada
  • David Raymore

I read an article that the author of the Harry Potter series, JK Rowling, wrote a Tweet to Roy Moore. She wrote the reason why he lost the election is that may be “God is a black woman.” I think she was implying since the majority of voters were black women who voted against him is such good way to rub it in. I just love her way with words.

  • narutomania

I think he should have put it this way: “Roy, you need to move along now.”

  • Gregory In Seattle

“You lost, snowflake. Get over it.”

  • Bj Lincoln

I feel bad for his horse. He rode it like he had never rode before. 2 hands on the reins and pulling the poor things head so hard. A real cowboy only uses one hand on the reins and never pulls them or rough. If you ride enough, the horse knows how you ride and what you want without torturing it’s neck and mouth. I have noticed a strong correlation between deeply religious and how mean they are to their animals. The Amish work the hell out of their animals and don’t generally get too attached. Trivia…..There were laws against animal cruelty long before laws against child abuse or domestic violence.

  • JWC

It may have been the black female vote and a write in vote But I think an underlying theme was Alabama is tired of the mockery and ridicule heaped upon them by the rest of the coubtry They have grown tired of being the butt of the joke May this theme continue to all Southern states

  • Lindoro Almaviva

Jones has a lot more class and patience that i would. My response would have been:

“Well, in reality Roy Moore doesn’t have to concede anything for the election to be legal or final. After all, concession speeches are 1. a show of class, 2. an act of accepting reality and 3. an act of self assessment. Do we expect Roy Moore to have strong skills in either of these 3 given his history for the past 40 years?”

  • jerry
  • Sporkfighter

It’s time to move on . . . way on. Jesus has a few things He wants discuss with Roy.
