Minnesota Lt. Gov. Tina Smith To Replace Al Franken

The Minnesota Star-Tribune reports:

Gov. Mark Dayton will appoint Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to replace Sen. Al Franken as Minnesota’s next U.S. senator, according to two high-level Democratic sources with knowledge of the decision.

Dayton will name Smith as his choice at a Wednesday morning news conference, and she plans to run for the seat in a 2018 special election, the sources said. Franken announced last week his intention to resign after he was accused of improper conduct toward more than half a dozen women.

In selecting Smith, the governor is choosing one of his most trusted advisers and someone who has worked for years traveling the state and building relationships with influential DFLers and business leaders.

Smith was Dayton’s first chief-of-staff after careers at General Mills, Planned Parenthood and the city of Minneapolis, where she was chief-of-staff to former Mayor R.T. Rybak.

There has been considerable speculation that Franken might rescind his resignation if Roy Moore won. During his resignation speech, Franken only said he would leave office in “the weeks to come.”

  • Gerry Fisher

The only bright spot to that whole Franken situation is another woman in the senate, which is a very, very good thing.

I’m with Justin Trudeau on this.
      It should be 50/50.

Why 50/50? Women comprise the larger proportion of the population. Shouldn’t it be 51/49?

        • ChrisMorley

Fine-tuning is available when you get close to 50/50.

97% of Black female voters in Alabama voted for Doug Jones. In my opinion, it should be 97% Black women, and 3% “other.”

A leading Dem senator with national stature gets booted out for the flimsiest of reasons and is replaced by an unknown. Oh, yay….

      • Rich

Well, he really didn’t have ‘national stature’ before, now it’s Senator Smith’s turn to build national stature too.

        • Grumpy Old Man

Look what national stature did for our/the last ‘real’ prez!

  • DaddyRay

I am glad she is planning to run for the seat afterward. I didn’t like the idea of having someone fill the seat and leaving it to an open primary. Incumbents always have the upper hand in keeping the seat.

  • bkmn

As a former Minnesotan I am not thrilled by this. It puts the Speaker of the House into the Lt. Gov spot. If anything happens to Dayton, who has had health issues, a Republican would become Gov.

    • DaddyRay

      Oh, I didn’t know this

    • SoCalGal20

What sort of Republican is the Speaker? Is he(?) a RWNJ type or one of the more moderate types that tend to win in bluer areas?

    • Joe in PA

Yikes. I thought that MN law said whoever he appointed to this “temporary” seat was not allowed to run later. I’m so confused. 🙁

    • DaddyRay

Who replaces the Speaker in the Minnesota state house? – any ideas

    • Mark_in_MN

It is the president of the Senate, actually, but yes, it makes the Lt. Gov. a republican.

    • safari

Gov Snyder will not hold a special election to replace Conyers.

      • Treant

Goody! That means nothing moves in the Senate during the last year Conyers is seated, so no votes until January of 2019!

      • Lumpy Gaga

Governor Snyder needs some of my special water pie.

      • canoebum

What Conyers did was bad, to be sure. But at least he didn’t poison nearly 100,000 people to save the state a few bucks. Conyers should lose his job, Snyder should be behind bars.

      • Tom

It’s actually a bit confusing what GOP Snyder has proposed.
There WILL be a special election to fill Conyers seat BUT on the same general Election Day in Nov. 2018. AS WELL AS the ballot for the Representative of that CD.
The winner of the first ballot would serve the one month of Conyers term while the othe winner of the second ballot ( who might be the same) would serve in the new Congress beginning in Jan of 2019! So voters will need to vote TWICE on their ballots for the same office.
        Hmmmm

      • unsavedheathen

I believe the point being made is that in less than three years Jones will face Alabama voters again, probably pitted against a non-child-molesting Republican, with Trump on the ticket(if he’s still in office) and that Trump carried the state by 30+ points in ’16. If he has hopes of reelection to a full term, Jones will need to court the right, not the left.

        • canoebum

I doubt Trump will be on any election ticket. The only ticket he’s getting is one-way to Palookaville.

          • unsavedheathen

I hope his final destination is Leavenworth, Kansas. But as I said I was only trying to explain the logic(being generous here) behind the GOP spin.

We already have enough problems here in Kansas, thank you.

          • canoebum

            Let’s hope you ‘re right.

          • prixator

            Not Guantanamo?

        • Cuberly Deux

With his stance on abortion and the apparent obsession so many in Alabama have with it. Not so sure he’ll last outside of the three years.

Only way he’ll get reelected is by courting the same constituents that got him in. Not so sure that’s won by pandering to the right.

          • David L. Caster

Democrats need to stop pandering to the right.

      • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

I love that line too, but he should pay them lip service. This is only a three year gig and it will likely switch back to Red unless he can bring home the bacon for everyone. (which is tough for a jr. senator)

    • Treant

Yeah, Miss Romney-Thing, I’m pretty sure he ran as a Democrat and won as a Democrat.

Let me tell you how that works. Alabama. Alabama actually rejected the Republican candidate. You lost. He’s beholden to the Democratic voters and their platform.

You? You get to go away.

    • danolgb

I remember before the election when Orin Hatch was resigned to a Clinton Presidency. He claimed Hillary would have no mandate and that she’d only win because Trump was so terrible. Well, fast forward a year after Trump loses the popular vote, and Orin has Trump dismantling Obama’s legacy with a negative mandate. They’re all such slime.

      • canoebum

Slime at least, on occasion, performs a useful function. The GOP? Never.

    • edrex

  • SoCalGal20

This thread is really interesting about the ground game in Alabama for the Doug Jones campaign by the NAACP and other groups. Dems (whether funded through the party or just grassroots efforts) need to do this sort of thing across the country.

    https://twitter.com/algiordano/status/940657094050615297

    • jmax

Not to sound paranoid, but now that Republicans see how these efforts are succeeding, I wonder what shenanigans they will attempt to stop them in the future.

    • vtdave

It would be nice if there was a plan to follow up on the vote suppression I have seen reported. IMHO EVERY voter who was inactivated/blocked should be followed up on. The person signing (can I assume any such action gets a signature somewhere along the line?) off on such “mistaken” inactivations should face sanctions – including jail time if possible! Misuse of the Kolback “duplicate registration” list should be a criminal act and treated as such. Send a few Rethug registrars to jail and perhaps this crap will stop.

      • SoCalGal20

Use of Crosscheck (Kobach’s “list”) is determined by the states. Alabama, somewhat surprisingly, doesn’t use it.

As for following up with voters turned away at the polls for supposedly being inactive or other illegitimate reasons, hopefully the ACLU and NAACP and other orgs are following up with people and people are contacting them.

  • totally OT, but wow disqus has been jiggy here of late. like, i can’t get comments to load at all. it’s weird cause they work at other blogs and i haven’t changed anything on my browsing device recently.

another dem woman in the senate who is willing to fight to hold the seat? works for me.

  • John30013

I’m glad to hear she will run for the seat in 2018. There was speculation that she would only serve as a caretaker, allowing a wide open race for the seat next year. Now, at least she’ll be the incumbent that a GOP contender will have to beat.

I know nothing about her, but if her resume is any guide she sounds like a perfect pick for the job.

  • worstcultever

    Planned Parenthood. Yaasss!

  • This is a bad idea. This puts the Speaker of the state House Kurt Daudt into the Lt. Governor’s chair — a semi-rabid Republican who is one more bad health spell on Dayton’s part from the governor’s office.

    • Mark_in_MN

It will be Senate President Michelle Fischbach who become Lt. Governor when Tina Smith takes the Senate seat. This may lead to some drama in the state, as Republicans are talking about her holding both the Senate presidency and the Lt. Gov. seat, trying to hold on to their razor thin majority there.
