San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee Dies At Age 65

The San Francisco Chronicle reports:

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee died early Tuesday morning at age 65, his office said. The sudden news came in an email from the office at 2:23 a.m.

It read: “It is with profound sadness and terrible grief that we confirm that Mayor Edwin M. Lee passed away on Tuesday, December 12 at 1:11 a.m. at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Family, friends and colleagues were at his side. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Anita, his two daughters, Brianna and Tania, and his family.”

No cause of death was given. Lee, known for his friendly and often jokey personality and his focus on details and political consensus, was the 43rd mayor of San Francisco and the first Asian American to lead the city. Board of Supervisors President London Breed became acting mayor, effectively immediately, the office said.

Lee was not known to have been ill.

  • Boreal

    Well shit.

  • JCF

    RIP, memory eternal.

FWIW, I believe SF now has its first African-American woman mayor in Ms Breed.

    • Stuart ArtFart

Not that she was elected to that office. And she won’t be there for long.

But you take note of her sex and race if that makes you happy.

      • Bluto

Well aren’t you a little ray of sunshine.

        • Tom Furgas

          Very little indeed.

        • Robincho

In my travels about town, I have overheard London Breed referred to as both London Bridge and London Broil…

          • pch1013

Neither is as amusing as the nickname given to former SFPD chief Heather Fong.

      • Joe in PA

        You seem nice.

      • gaycuckhubby

        Piss off

        • JCF

Somehow, I’d already blocked this loser! ;-/

      • TuuxKabin

        go to hell.

      • GayOldLady

BECAUSE in this country black people and women are woefully underrepresented in the halls of power, even in CA. So, even if it is a temporary position until a special election, it MATTERS.

        • Robincho

This is how Dianne Feinstein “got started” — she was prez of the Board of Supes when Moscone was assassinated…

          • GayOldLady

Thanks for reminding me of that. That was such a terrible time, but among the thorns we found roses.

        • stevenj

In his comment history from 13 days ago:
“There’s nothing inherently wrong with blackface.”

        • D. Gray

But in this case, it might just be that she fails on her merits.
We have been watching her with great hope for some time; hope is fading.

        • Stuart ArtFart

I find it very interesting that nobody is citing any actual accomplishments of London Breed during her time on the SF Board of Supervisors. Just the fact that she has a uterus and dark skin is noteworthy? Please!

          • GayOldLady

She’s on the Board of Supervisors, that’s an accomplishment in itself. I bet you’ve not accomplished more, not even with your race and gender advantages. What’s wrong, you don’t like a black woman holding the office until an election? I have a tiny violin I’ll use to play you a sad song.

      • medaka

        That’s deliciously block-worthy. Ta.

      • Todd

I think this something like page 11 out of the conservative playbook: try to turn liberals celebrating diversity into them being racist and misogynist. Yours was a lame attempt; you’re simply doing it wrong. I think you need to re-read the handbook.

        • Robincho

          You assume it can read…

          • Todd

            Good point. My mistake.

      • Robincho

        fuck you

      • George Clarendon

It must be scary, living a world were the odds are against straight white men, ❄️❄️

      • Charlie In SF

London rocks. She’s much more popular than Ed Lee was.

        • D. Gray

Not among her constituents who are aware…

          • Charlie In SF

            She’s a pragmatist w/ street cred

      • pj

        bye bye

      • pch1013

Isn’t it a bit early to be blowing clouds? Or have you been up all night?

      • stevenj

        ^A genuine swamp creature^

    • That_Looks_Delicious

Willie Brown was the first AA mayor, I think.

      • gaycuckhubby

        Yep. Although not a woman ️ ☺️

      • narutomania

He was indeed (whilst I was living there, in fact). Not that he did anything for the betterment of the city, mind you. For the betterment of Willy Brown, certainly. But not for the city.

    • London Breed will serve as Acting Mayor until the Board of Supervisors votes for a permanent replacement to serve out the rest of Lee’s term, which ends in 2017. Some Acting Mayors have later been confirmed as Mayor (like Dianne Feinstein). Others were not (David Chiu was passed over for Ed Lee). I don’t think Acting Mayor counts — after all, Ed Lee is touted as our first Asian mayor, not David Chiu.

  • Ninja0980

    RIP Mr.Lee

  • Ugh. Really sad. =(

    RIP Mayor Lee.

  • JoeMyGod

Right wingers blamed Lee for the death of Kate Steinle and are, of course, mocking his death on Twitter.

    • JCF

God, I could have lived w/o hearing that. Deplorables have NO bottom: we know that.

      • Tom Furgas

Right Wingers at one time (so long ago!) were principled and intelligent, even if their policies were always skewed toward favoring the rich over the poor. Now they are cold-blooded bastards who lie and backstab everyone who is not on the same page as they are. Hateful, brutal, and downright evil. To Hell with every last one of them.

        • Frostbite

Heck, they backstab each other as soon as they turn around. Can’t imagine living in the constant fear that they do.

          • Tom Furgas

True, true. But I sense there will be a big turnaround as the idiot mass public finally awakens to what is being done to them. The Right Wingers have thus far been able to garner their support by playing to their fears with racism, xenophobia, homophobia, etc. But I think that’s slowly changing. Let’s hope for a bloodbath in the midterm elections next year.

        • Charlie In SF

That period only lasted from Ike through Johnson.

    • Ninja0980

      Wouldn’t expect anything less.

    • Of course they are. Again: “deplorables” was too kind a word.

      • pch1013

Because they care more about the tragic accidental death of one woman than about the tragic INTENTIONAL deaths of 58 people.

        They are inhuman, amoral monsters.

    • Frostbite

      Memento mori

    • Acronym Jim

This weekend, Portland had a clash between right-wing racists who were “protesting Kate Steinle’s death,’ and local AntiFa. I had not heard of Kate Steinle, and did not know anything about her until I Googled her, but I imagine she would have been aghast at at least one protester’s sign stating her killer was released because she (Steinle) was white.

These assholes don’t give a single shit about Steinle, they are just capitalizing on her death to feed their own racism.

      • pch1013

If she had been black or Asian …

well, now, I’m sure I don’t need to finish that sentence.

    • Do Something Nice

And on SF news sites. As if he had anything to do with her death.

FYI, San Francisco became a ‘sanctuary city’ in 1990. Ed Lee became mayor in 2011.

  • JCF
  • BeaverTales

Lee, 65, had been mayor since 2011. Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown told CNN affiliate ABC7 News that Lee “suffered cardiac arrest”.

65 is a young age. Compared to most of our nationally recognized politicians these days, that’s practically toddlerhood.

Condolences are in order for the City..

  • sorry to hear about your loss, SF.

Does anyone thing President Putz will issue a statement?
If he does’t, it’s probably because SF is a liberal city in CA.
If he does, he’ll somehow work in political issues like sanctuary cities, or immigration.
    Mark my words.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

He’s got a new enemy-du-jour that he’s ranting about (Gillibrand).

    • SFBruce

I doubt if he mentions it. That would take time out of his busy tv-watching day, plus those highly insulting tweets infused with sexual innuendo about women that dare to criticize the Orange One aren’t going to write themselves.

    • John

I hope he just keeps his pie hole shut!!!

  • Sam_Handwich
    • gaycuckhubby

      Fuck him so hard

      • John

I suggest using a red hot metal rod….it worked during the inquisition…just remember, everything old is new again…

    • gaycuckhubby

The only time he calls people out by their names is when he feels threatened. He sees gillibrand as a threat in 2020

      • GayOldLady

I’d love to see Kirsten step up and become his foil. She will rip him a new one in her quiet understated way. He doesn’t want her calling for his resignation because women pay attention to her.

        • gaycuckhubby

          I love her

    • who’s Bill?

      • JCF

        Clinton.

        • i didn’t know Bill was running.
          or something?

          • JCF

Obviously not. But she said—***in response to a Yes/No question***—that Bill C should have resigned.

Drumpf is TRYING to sow conflict amidst the Dems. Do NOT fall for it!!!!!

    • JCF

” “begging” for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them)”

In a story about his sexual misconduct, marvel at these words.

    • SoCalGal20

Kirsten Gillebrand gonna kick your sexually harassing, traitorous ass.

      • gaycuckhubby

        I would LOVE a Gillibrand/Buttigieg ticket in 2020 🙂

        • Michael White

Do you think in the current climate Pete could be elected? The animus against the LGBTQ community is higher than ever. Besides, I want him to stay in South Bend, for purely selfish reason.

          • gaycuckhubby

Yes. I do think he could get elected

          • JCF

I’m not sure Obama could have won in a year other than 2008, succeeding Dubya. It’s possible that ONLY to defeat Drumpf, could Buttigieg get elected now [“now” in the sense of the next several election cycles].

    • GayOldLady

Oh, I smell the fear emanating from your twitter castle. You’re finished don-don. Go on and start packing. And if you’re talking about body mass, next to you Kirsten Gillibrand along with half of the human race, is a lightweight.

      • William

Trump is gathering angry mobs to go after Mueller. The final Russian influence report is in a race agaibst the Trumpeteers.

        • Steverino

Smells like obstruction of justice, to me.

    • ColdCountry

USED? What is that supposed to mean?? But then, what does anything he says mean.

  • GayOldLady

Condolences to his family and friends.

  • worstcultever

Rest in peace Ed Lee, and thanks for having been here.

When my time comes, I hope it’s fast like this.

  • Do Something Nice

Not one of my favorite mayors, but 65 is WAY too young. RIP Ed Lee.

  • Kevin Andrews

Condolences to the family & friends.

  • MirrorMan

Well, this will make work fun today. (I’m in city government, and ‘fun’ is used in a sarcastic manner. The PR folks around me are gonnna be in overdrive…)

  • MarkBuster

I’m not going to pretend he was anything other than what he was just because he died. I’m sorry for his family, but he screwed over the working class hard.

    • D. Gray

Speak for yourself, but his tenure was good for me, and far better than that of the Wiley Willie.

      • MarkBuster

well, if it was good for you then, that’s alright. screw the gentrification and the loss of an arts community and the rise of a shanty town. as long as you got yours, it’s all good

  • stevenj

I read on SFGate just a while ago that Lee died of a heart attack while shopping in his Glen Park neighborhood Safeway at 10:30 last night.

  • John

Mayor Ed Lee was pronounced dead at 1:11 a.m. today at San Francisco General. Cause of death was a heart attack. This is so sad. He was a good mayor.

  • fuzzybits

This is shocking. RIP Mr. Lee.
