AUSTRALIA: Anti-Gay Christian Couple Reneges On Vow To Divorce If Same-Sex Marriage Becomes Law

The Daily Mail reports:

A married Christian couple who pledged to divorce if same sex marriage was legalised will not go ahead with it because it would require them to separate from one another. Nick and Sarah Jensen, from Canberra, sparked controversy in 2015 when Mr Jensen announced they would end their decades-long legal union if same sex marriage was legalised.

And after Parliament finally passed the law to cheers on Thursday afternoon, Mr Jensen announced his position in a statement to Daily Mail Australia. “My previous public comments regarding civil divorce never envisaged me separating from my wife, but rather our marriage from the State,” he wrote.

“The legislation currently makes it untenable for us to do this under the law. The point we were highlighting and that still stands however is the fact that a redefinition of marriage changes the agreement under which we were originally married. We will be making no further comment.”

From my June 2015 post about these nuts:

“My wife and I just celebrated our 10-year anniversary. But later this year, we may be getting a divorce. The decision to divorce is not one we’ve taken lightly. And certainly, it’s not one that many will readily understand. And that’s because it’s not a traditional divorce. Our view is that marriage is a fundamental order of creation. Part of God’s human history. Marriage is the union of a man and a woman before a community in the sight of God. And marriage of any couple is important to God regardless of whether that couple recognises God’s involvement or authority in it.” – Nick Jansen.

    Sue them!

  • Karl Dubhe 2

    Surprise, surprise, surprise…

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

(rolls eyes) Of course. And then they wonder why more and more people side eye them and their religion.

  • Tawreos

In god’s eye marriage was property transaction. Men purchased their own personal and private baby-maker. If he believes anything else he has never read his bible.

    • vorpal

LOL I’d like to know what percentage of Christians have read even a single book from their bible.

      • Tawreos

They find it more useful as a prop, which is why they prefer the big ‘people beating; ones, rather than something to learn from.

“I Am Australian” (or “We are Australian”) is a popular Australian song written in 1987 by Bruce Woodley of The Seekers and Dobe Newton of The Bushwackers. Its lyrics are filled with many historic and cultural references, such as to the “digger”, Albert Namatjira and Ned Kelly, among others. Its popularity has allowed it to join the ranks of other patriotic songs considered as alternatives to the Australian national anthem, “Advance Australia Fair”. It is commonly taught in primary schools.[1]

Over the years since the song’s release, there have been calls for it to become Australia’s national anthem, notably in 2011 by former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett.[2]

    Guess that backfired on them

  • Frommer_Gast

If I were a gay Australian baker I would send them a cake,
    It might confuse them …

    • Guess?

Would you place two grooms on top?

      • vorpal

I’d put two dead cockroaches on top.

        • Tawreos

          A much better representation.

        • Frommer_Gast

Homophobic Christians are no reason to ruin an otherwise nice cake.
          Compromise: two marchpane – cockroaches?
They would transport the message without cruelty against pastry!

          • Treant

Can you make cockroaches out of marzipan? Because I’d eat them if they’re made of marzipan.

          • vorpal

Amazingly, this is what turns up when you search for “cockroach cake” in Google Image search. I cannot believe the level of detail someone went through to make this cake.

            And…. why?

          • vorpal

It’s really impressive work. I’m just not sure if it was made out of love or hate, but I suspect it has to be one of the two.

          • Frommer_Gast

            Of course I can!
Probably they need a chocolate icing for the colour, to avoid use of food dye which ruins the marzipan -taste (my main caveat against rainbow – tarts).

Alternatively I would mold them from liquorice.

Conservative Christians lying is not news: it’s their modus operandi.
It looks like despite their little temper tantrum, their god didn’t let them have their way.

    • Tawreos

They will never wonder why, with all of their prayers, their all powerful god still didn’t let them win.

      • vorpal

Their god keeps saying NO to them, but they’re too busy screeching to hear him.

        • Tawreos

To be fair they have gotten used to hearing yes from the government and now don’t know how to take no for an answer.

      • DumbHairyApe

Their god also doesn’t hear their prayers for the victims of gun violence- cuz it keeps, happening and he’s not doing anything to stop it.

        • Tawreos

But Jesus loves all the guns, or at least Republican Jesus does.

    • zhera

How are you doing, luv? It’s good to see you here.

      • vorpal

        Hi zhera!
Doing okay. Today is going to be tough because we have to bury our little kitty tonight. (Apparently, they don’t cremate pets here in Chile.) We’re relieved she is no longer suffering, though.

P.S. Much love to you! Thanks for checking in with me!

        • zhera

Aww, no! Your girl kitty is gone? you only have boys left now?

Whisker hugs and wet nose kisses to you and yours! ♥

          • vorpal

Yeah. She was diagnosed with a liver tumour around four weeks ago and deteriorated pretty quickly. Yesterday the vet came to our house (thankfully, so that she could die in the comfort of a familiar, safe space) and ended her pain.

The house feels empty just having the hubby and three boy kitties. Given how many homeless animals there are in Chile looking to be adopted, I don’t predict it’ll be long before we have a new girl kitty to terrorize us all.

          • kareemachan

My sympathies to you and yours. It’s hard to make this decision, even when it is obviously the right thing to do. We have been lucky enough to have a vet who makes house calls as well, which made it a tad easier when Kitty passed on.

          • vorpal

So glad to have vets willing to make house visits. The last thing our little furry family members need when they’re sick or dying is to have to deal with added stress.

Thanks for the kind words, kareemachan.

        • Todd Allis

          Hugs

          • vorpal

Thanks, Todd. We found the perfect spot to place her and had a lovely moment reminiscing about her crazy antics. I miss her tremendously, but I feel at peace about the whole thing now.

He lied. If it’s a marriage recognized by his god he wouldn’t have needed the state marriage

Plus claiming his god rules my atheist life at all including my marriage is absurd.

A dumb Christian once asked why I do thanksgiving as an atheist, who am I thanking? I replied it’s a pagan harvest festival. These idiots need their cult to govern us due to their insecurity. They know it’s not true but fear being bacon if they are wrong

One more graphic example of the Christ-O-Fascist scum of the Earth doing what they do best; living lies and fraud upon all humanity. Mentally ill pedophiles without a single redeeming quality is the best description to date. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/be3f7dce7da7066b580370de72187248b4d349d6a19718b73fedf79ec8d34aff.png

What a ridiculous load of hateful Jeebusite nit-picking.

  • JDS

Well ass monkeys you need to go through it, you made such a fuss.

  • ClevelandJim

Typical full of hot air cowards, completely childish.

  • Gerry Fisher

Many of us have had the experience of committing to our loving partners regardless of state approval. Apparently, they weren’t strong enough to follow through and go it in their own. Shocking (not).

  • Blake Jordan

Why did they think anyone would actually give a fuck in the first place?

Straight people do stupid shit all the time, including marrying/divorcing for impulsive/immature reasons…

    • Lumpy Gaga

      Beautiful.

[cough] Er, um, beautiful that you can say “shit” on TV there.

      • There is a lovely story told that the late President Coolidge (of the USA) was addressing some gathering of farmers and expatiating on the virtues of manure.

Mrs Coolidge was in the audience, and the woman sitting next to her asked her in a stage whisper, “Grace, is it really necessary for the President to use such indelicate language?”

“Honey, you don’t know how hard it was to persuade him to call it manure!”

  • iambu

“My previous public comments regarding civil divorce never envisaged me separating from my wife, but rather our marriage from the State,”

Ah. Someone gave you a dictionary, I see.

  • Halou

    Unprincipled cowards.

  • Adam Stevens

Maybe heterosexuals should stop playing games with such a sacred institution.

They are ruining marriage for us decent people, and we should not have to be compared to them.

It is, perhaps, time to relegate them to civil unions until they can show that they can respect the institution of marriage.

  • Empty vessels make most noise.

Ah, yes, this comes as no surprise because everybody knew they were lying.

How [religious fundamentalist] “Christian” of them!

  • Mike__in_Houston

They’re not getting divorced after all? I am shocked, SHOCKED, I tells ya. Hypocrites.

  • Steve Teeter

Well, look who’s finally discovered the value of love and commitment.

  • Elsewhere1010

So they wanted to be divorced from the state, but didn’t realize they could no longer cohabitate?

Nah. I got nothing. Sometimes you’re presented with stupid manifested in it’s purest, most stupendous, and potent form and all you can do is stand back and admire it for its vastness.

    • stevenj

They must not have duplexes in Australia.

  • Baltimatt

    Ten year anniversary? Scream!

    • Joba

How long of you been moderating the Baltimore Sun talk forms? 20 years? You post there you post here you post everywhere.
Do you actually have a real life?

  • John Calendo

This is an outrage! Theses Christians made a vow not simply to Australia but to Christ Himself! Now they break that vow, they mocked the sovereignty of the Lord, they join the army of Satan. They must be shunned.

    • Ben in Oakland

Jesus forgave them. He told me so.

  • Spongebob CrankyPants

    LOL

Behold, one and all, the courage of Christian conviction…take note, point and laugh.

  • Nic Peterson

    Dog knew they were lying.

  • Guess

Wait… does Australian Rules Marriage dictate that once you divorce you can’t just shack up with each other? Or are they just making crap up as they go along?

    • Shane Gowland

You need to have been legally separated for 12 months before the divorce will be granted.

  • Charlie In SF

    Lying scum

  • Friday

What, Christians setting themselves up as ‘martyrs’ over nothing lied and chickened out once they had no chance of hurting anyone with their bullshit? Go figure.

  • Gregory In Seattle

A Talibangelical who broke a vow. Gee, imagine my surprise.

  • jmax

“We will be making no further comment.”
Can I get that in writing, fuckface?

  • Tut, tut. They can get a civil divorce and end their entitlement to the *legal* rights of married couples, while still remaining spiritually married pursuant to the tenets of their religion so their cohabitation doesn’t have to be “sinful.”

  • Pip

    Liars.

  • Ben in Oakland

Honey, we knew you’d never get a divorce.

It just shows that you’d have the courage of your convictions,…

If only you had any convictions.

  • Joe Lumello

    Fake Christians making fake promises…shocking.

  • Highmoremotel

This couple has a commitment problem.

  • ECarpenter

Gosh, fundamentalist Christians reneging on promises they made? This must be the first time ever!

Jesus is sobbing into his hanky after being let down by these commandment-breakers – he really really wanted them to divorce, but not for the reasons they claimed. It’s a dark blue one, he flags right apparently.

    • That’s why it made the news!

  • ETownCanuck

Well well well…what a surprise, more Christians who won’t actually put up rather than shut up. Guess Jesus doesn’t really mean all that much to you after all.

  • Jim Maloney

    They lie. Unsurprising. No integrity.

  • Jim Maloney

“The legislation currently makes it untenable for us to do this under the law.” – Did they outlaw divorce too and Joe didn’t post about that?

  • GanymedeRenard

So much fuss for nothing. Fucking hypocrites.

  • bdog

    SO pathetic.

  • Surprise, surprise, surprise, not.

  • Lumpy Gaga

Can we have back the 15 seconds of attention you have stolen from our lives?

  • FelineMama

“Require them to separate from one another” .That’s their excuse, I mean, reason. Doesn’t that happen in divorces anyway? Typical anti-gays. Lying hypocrites. They probably were so assured this wouldn’t fly. KUDOS Australia!!

  • NZArtist

Christians lying? Bugger me, how completely unlike them.

  • Nowhereman

    So, you lied. Surprise surprise.

  • Rusty Redfield

I think these folks need some divorce gifts and cards, don’t you? Just to remind them of their promise. Anyone have an address?

  • Aurvara

Why could they not have a religious wedding only? They wouldn’t be married in the eyes of the state and could not benefit from all the advantages that the legal married state brings, but that should be no barrier to them, given their moral objections.

  • Michael Smith

This has got to be the most fucked of news I’ve heard all day! #Bigots4God Omg! Mu husband and i have been together for 30 YEARS, 2 of which are legally married where I took my husbands last name! I’d like to mention to all you bigoted Christians out here that we have raised a family together, have grandkids, own a home, own a business!! So while your out breaking yet another law in the bible about divorce, they are waiting for you in hell! Love makes a family never forget that!

Ho hum… just another example of evangelical Christians lying and breaking their promises.

  • 3-Star

I wonder if there’s a group over there that can organize rotating shifts of reminding them to divorce. I wonder how many times they would be approached before a mental breakdown? LOL

  • Gianni

Shocking reversal! I notice that your squirming for some sort of rationale for not divorcing – the legislation makes it untenable. Nonsense! You just don’t have the courage to admit that it was a foolish and silly notion that would accomplish nothing except a divorce and unhappiness for you and your wife. All of Australia and readers on this site now know how you feel about gay equality. Congrats! Now settle in and resume your lives as you have up until you let your high-handed, Christian foolishness run away with your better judgement. Who knows? Upon further reflection, you two just might have learned something really positive about relating to other people.

  • Rob Cahill

“The decision to divorce is not one we’ve taken lightly.” Or indeed at all.

  • JCF

I did not see that coming.
