Russia Banned From Winter Olympics Over Doping

The New York Times reports:

Russia’s Olympic team has been barred from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The country’s government officials are forbidden to attend, its flag will not be displayed at the opening ceremony and its anthem will not sound. Any athletes from Russia who receive special dispensation to compete will do so as individuals wearing a neutral uniform, and the official record books will forever show that Russia won zero medals.

That was the punishment issued Tuesday to the proud sports juggernaut that has long used the Olympics as a show of global force but was exposed for systematic doping in previously unfathomable ways. The International Olympic Committee, after completing its own prolonged investigations that reiterated what had been known for more than a year, handed Russia penalties for doping so severe they were without precedent in Olympics history.

The ruling cemented that the nation was guilty of executing an extensive state-backed doping program. The scheme was rivaled perhaps only by the notorious program conducted by East Germany throughout the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. Now the sports world will wait to see how Russia responds. Some Russian officials have threatened to boycott if the I.O.C. delivered such a severe punishment.

  • Blake Mason

    this tweet should be interesting…

  • HZ81

How will Donald punish the IOC?

    • Treant

      Can you bomb the IOC?

      • Blake Mason

He will send them a very mean tweet…

        • teedofftaxpayer

He’ll put them on the International Terrorists list.

      • zhera

Yes. In South Korea, in a few months, you can bomb them all. Stay tuned…

    • AmeriCanadian

      By pulling the U.S. out?

    • kareemachan

My first thought exactly. More shit-explosions on Twitter tonight!

    • Uncle Mark

I first saw that as KFC…as we’ve all seen how Donnie-Two-Scoops punishes a bucket of that before

      • Reality.Bites

I really think the Dems need to recruit the chickens and steers of America as allies.

There is no truth to the rumour that when I buy a cut-up chicken i take one piece from 9 different packages in order to ensure as many chickens as possible died for my dinner.

    • Miji

“I didn’t taste any doping. The IOC is rigging the games just like Crooked Hillary! SAD!!!”

      • Miji

Follow up tweet: ” Oh, the athletes? Never mind.”

  • Treant

Wait a second. They’re banned, so they’ll boycott? You’re banned, I don’t think anybody gives a crap if you show up or not. 🙂

    • David Walker

You noticed that too? I did have to scratch my head a bit on that one.

  • Gene Perry

This is wrong. The IOC should ban individuals for doping, not just assume that everybody from a given country is guilty (guilt by association much).

    • Joseph Miceli

You missed the point. The IOC has “discovered” that the doping was state sponsored. If the state is responsible, then you punish the state.

    • Christopher

State-backed doping programs tend to raise the ire of some.

I think this is a good call for the IOC.

    • tbj5

      Read the actual article.

This was state-led and directed doping.

    • kareemachan

Inform yourself before commenting. It helps.

    • Publius

I think your opinion would be quite reasonable if the doping occurred on a more individual basis. In general, punishment should be personal and not collective. But in this case, because the doping is state-sanctioned, collective punishment is the only way to address this problem.

  • kirtanloorii

    YAY!

  • Christopher

“Some Russian officials have threatened to boycott if the I.O.C. delivered such a severe punishment.”

Who the fuck cares?! Your teams won’t be competing anyway!

    • Todd20036

And no one wants to see a bunch of doped up athletes.

      • David Walker

        Well…not competing, anyway.

  • Reality.Bites

God help us when the IOC has more integrity than the US government.

  • Butch

How exactly do you boycott if you’re forbidden from attending in the first place? Does that mean you do the opposite and show up?

    • ColdCountry

They are threatening to boycott the IOC, not the games. They’re banned from the games, not the IOC. Two different things.

  • tbj5

    Russia? Cheating? Why, I never!

  • Uncle Mark

Does “doping” include putting a dope in the Oval Office ?

  • Publius

The President of the United States, Vladmir Putin, will not stand for this.

  • PickyPecker

Although this won’t go over well in the Kremlin, it’s pretty well known that Russia has been cheating for years if not decades.
    До свида́ния!

  • Michael R
  • ceeenbee

Now, if only we could bar them from the presidency of the United States.

  • ColdCountry

Winter Olympics in SK. All those people for all over. So close to NK. And the Russians will be pissed. And….

    • William

Best to stay at least a continent away.

  • bkmn

Trump is going to be so pissed…as soon as he gets instructions from Comrade Putin.

    • Cackalaquiano

Ooooh, think he’ll pull the US out in solidarity? It would be very nationalist to skip a major international sports event.

      • Uncle Mark

Maybe Trump can fly Mike Pence & Mommie to the games, so they can storm out in a huff.

      • Bluto

Why not. He’s pulled the US out of every other global event, treaty & organization.

  • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

    Up yours, Putin.

  • Harveyrabbit
    • Uncle Mark

Clearly that crafty, killer-ninja, Hillary, as been doping all those “fine” Russian athletes. Must be her sneaky double-cross of that Uranium-One deal or something.

      • Reality.Bites

A thought I’ve read and enjoy is “What if every country has ninjas and we only know about Japan’s because theirs are the worst?”

        • Uncle Mark

LOVE IT !! All those Japanese propaganda movies clearly make up for all their bumbling

    • Space Marine Lysana

      Fake or deleted?

      • Harveyrabbit

The Tweet is fake but you know he’s thinking it.

        • Space Marine Lysana

Or something like it, all right.

  • William

Is it time to kill the Olympics yet?

    • Harveyrabbit

As long as they have enough money for payoffs and graft then no.

    • zhera

Has been time for that for quite some time. The corruption in the IOC (and other international athletes orgs) is ginormous. Western countries who value equal rights don’t want to host anymore.

  • Uncle Mark

I wonder if there will even be a S Korea by then

    • Harveyrabbit

On the plus side the radiation will give all the outdoor events a nice warm glow. Probably not good for the snow though.

      • Christopher

And the athletes will be their own nightlights!

    • AmeriCanadian

If Kim hasn’t been taken out by then, I’m sure it’s guaranteed that there will be missiles flying over the Olympics.

  • nocadrummer

Since they’re such strong supporters of Comrade Trump, I guess we won’t be seeing coverage of the Olympics on Fox, either. Trump will announce that the Winter Games are “fake news”.

  • bobbyjoe

Russia? Cheating? Get out of town!

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

However they will be competing on Project Runway All-Stars…

Should be the Cyrillic Complete Cheating Package

        • RemusL

I see what you did there.

  • ByronK

The I.O.C. had better hire some food-tasters.

    • GayOldLady

      Especially some tea tasters.

  • GayOldLady

Trump tweet: Why hasn’t the IOC banned Hillary from the Olympics. She’s been selling dope and child sex slaves out of DC Pizza Parlor and yet not a word from the IOC about that!!!! Emails, Benghazi, Bill, Lock somebody up. DO SOMETHING!

    • kareemachan

Not enough random capitalization and exclamation marks.

      • GayOldLady

        I’ll try harder next time.

    • Lumpy Gaga

I am Donald Trump’s lawyer and I wrote this message.

Dictated it, shouted it down the hallway, whatevs.

    • Michael B

I love that…’DO SOMETHING’ I remember the MoronTrump tweeting that out

  • kareemachan

    And then the murders began…

  • kareemachan

    And then the murders began…

  • Comixbear

The Russian anthem won’t be played? Trump will be so disappointed! He’s been practicing singing to it for months!!

  • bkmn

Off to run some errands. Have fun pissing off the morans while I am out.

    • Beth Sanders

do not forget to pick up fiber and your veggies my dear!

      • Lumpy Gaga

No. When he shits on my chest I want it to be runny and soupy. Not healthy, shapely little turds.

  • Uncle Mark

OOOOOO….For the good of the world, do you think that we could ask S Korea and the IOC to insist that President Dumb Fuck light the Olympic flame. His ravenous ego wouldn’t let him say “no.” I want to see him huff & puff his way up the stairs, only to have a massive heart attack, while setting himself on fire. Being the manure pile he is, he should be quite flammable. His fellow Tiki Torch Nazis would be sooo proud.

    • Reality.Bites

And we’ll finally get to test Hitchens’s theory about Falwell.

    • Lumpy Gaga

      “PYEONGCHANG!!!”

  • Jeffrey

Could we ban them from the 2020 presidential election?

    • Beth Sanders

MAYBE we should ban JEFFREY instead…

      • Lumpy Gaga

        That’s not how this works.

      • netxtown

Now Beth…you shouldn’t be out and about with your condition. How ever will you find your way home when you can’t see where you’ve gone?

      • Jeffrey

Maybe you should sit on a dick, Betty!

        • Beth Sanders

did not mean to trigger you my deer.

          • Jeffrey

I’m not triggered, I just think you should sit on a dick.

      • MatthewD

He must have struck a nerve, eh? You didn’t leave your usual fictional footnote…..oh, and thanks for the up-vote, it helps me determine your purpose here.

    • netxtown

That may be a bit too much to ask! /s

  • Henry Auvil

“PYEONGCHANG!!!” is totally replacing “OMG I’m gonna cum!!” in my sexytime lexicon.

  • Galvestonian

Hee-hee – Putin is gonna be pissed.

    • pch1013

He’ll start his own Olympics, similar to the way he started his own “Eurasian Union” that only five countries – all former Soviet republics – belong to.

  • Keith D Plane

I’m very surprised they did this. I was expecting some punishment but not this. Glad to see someone has some integrity.

  • Henry Auvil

“Doping” would be a good title for a history of the US over the last couple of years.

  • kaydenpat

Cheating at sports. Helping Republicans cheat at politics.

  • Beth Sanders

    Drugs should NOT be allowed!

    • zhera

      Good news: They’re not.

      • Natty Enquirer

What will they think of next?

  • netxtown

Yep, Putey……you have single-handedly put Russia out front again. The world over knows of your doped athletes, election corruption, and the endless killings of those who oppose your nasty arrogant ass. Your people The World will turn on you sooner or later. Count on it.

  • Natty Enquirer

The Winter Games are not the big moneymaker, right?

    • The Winter Games generally lose less money than the summer games. The Summer Games have lost a ton of cash for Brazil and London. The Olympics in general are not moneymakers. Most nations in the past have been happy to dump money into them to showcase themselves as centers of world development or showcase particular ideologies (ex. Berlin 36, Moscow 1980, China 2008). The USA has the best record of running even with Olympic games since it can make best use of corporate sponsorships and reuse of existing facilities.

      • Dazzer

The London Olympics haven’t lost a ‘ton’ of money. Yet.

We’re not quite on course to get all our money back and be able to turn a profit – but we’re doing a lot better financially than I thought we would have been doing by now (and I was someone who thought the London Olympics would lose a fuck-tonne of money).

  • gaycuckhubby

And they are hosting the World Cup next year. SMH

Although most of their soccer players play for elite foreign domestic leagues that have rigorous and frequent testing.

    • Dazzer

Yeah, but the Russian players will be all together and training in Russia for at least a month before the World Cup.

The only people who’ll be more doped up than the Russian players will be the Russian fans.

    • Is that shining world center of human rights and toleration known as Dubai still set to hold the World Cup in 2022?

      • Dazzer

That’d be Qatar you’re talking about. And yes.

        • Which of the two is considered more tolerant for LGBT people? I know Qatar has strained relations with Sunni Arab states right now (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, some others) for funding terrorism. Addendum – They all are bad according to Wiki. -” In September 2013, it was announced that all Gulf Cooperative Countries had agreed to discuss a proposal to establish some form of, yet unknown, testing in order to ban gay foreigners from entering any of the countries” . Qatar’s record on LGBT rights became a source of debate again, with gay rights groups criticizing FIFA for choosing to host the event in a country where homosexuality is illegal. ” Richard de Mos, a member of the Dutch Parliament for the Freedom Party (PVV), has proposed that the Dutch football team play in pink, instead of the country’s national colour, orange, to protest the gay rights situation in Qatar “

          • Dazzer

            :-))))

Now that’s a trick question! We both know the answer to that is Narnia!

      • gaycuckhubby

        Qatar. And yes

  • you know what makes me even more sad? the fact that host countries have to artificially produce snow, so they can have the olympics.

that said? the IOC is like, the most corrupt group ever. look it up. there is a proven record of ‘doping’ IOC members via money that goes back generations. it’s sort of amazing to me that this is not something well known. i don’t watch the olympics much for this reason.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I honestly think the Summer games should be in Greece and the Winter Games in Canada or at least a similar quality venue that’s naturally cold.

      • Hue-Man

The weather at the Calgary Winter Olympics (1988) was warmer than Miami, FL, 65F iirc. Vancouver 2010 had warm El Niño weather. With global warming, winter temperatures are likely to keep increasing. Inland high-elevation sites like Utah and Colorado would probably be better than Vancouver or Calgary, longer term.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

That makes sense. Mostly, I’d just like for them to choose permanent spots so nations don’t waste money for infrastructure they won’t use later.

      • thatotherjean

I do think that there should be permanent venues. Countries spend so much money to build facilities and housing, and almost all of it sits unused and falls apart when the games are over. It seems to me that everybody would be better off if every country contributed to building something that would be used every time–Greece, and maybe Norway? I’d hope that some governments in suitable climates would volunteer.

  • JCF
  • GanymedeRenard

    Good riddance.

  • boobert

Will the moron boycott to show support?

  • Slippy_World
  • Gayer Than Thou

I’m almost beginning to think it’s possible that maybe Russian is kinda fucked up.

  • Tbh, the Chinese are just as bad but we don’t threaten them because they’re our creditors and it’s not politically useful to pillory them at this juncture.
