REPORT: During Initial Pussygate Furor, GOP Donors Were Told It Would Take $800M For Trump To Drop Out

The Atlantic has published a lengthy and quite interesting profile of Mike Pence’s road to the Trump administration.

When to the story gets to the furor surrounding Trump’s infamous Access Hollywood “pussygate” tape, author McKay Coppins reveals this:

Already, Reince Priebus’s office was being flooded with panicked calls from GOP officials and donors urging the RNC chairman to get rid of Trump by whatever means necessary. One Republican senator called on the party to engage emergency protocols to nominate a new candidate. RNC lawyers huddled to explore an obscure legal mechanism by which they might force Trump off the ticket.

Meanwhile, a small group of billionaires was trying to put together money for a “buyout”—even going so far as to ask a Trump associate how much money the candidate would require to walk away from the race. According to someone with knowledge of the talks, they were given an answer of $800 million. (It’s unclear whether Trump was aware of this discussion or whether the offer was actually made.) Republican donors and party leaders began buzzing about making Pence the nominee and drafting Condoleezza Rice as his running mate.

..and now they back him to get their tax cuts…

Had I known, I would’ve started a Go Fund Me.

I would’ve donated! (Not the entire 800M, but at least a little)

  • Joe in PA

They dodged a bullet there, eh…they are getting everything they wanted w/o spending the $800M.

  • Bluto

800 mil is a bargain, considering the damage he’s done.

    • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

I said in another threat, they had to outbid Putin. Clearly, Putin won.

      • Tawreos

Putin could destroy his image, the GOP could only pay him.

        • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

And may well do so, since he isn’t getting the sanctions lifted as promised. However he IS getting major discord, destabilization and distrust of our political system.

          • clay

as well as the lack of international leadership.

          • LaChatSayWha

The power vacuums that have emerged are being quickly filled by China & Vlad. I’m surprised that Vlad hasn’t moved more aggressively to take advantage of the absence of the US on the world stage, but he’s probably as surprised as we are that this country has folded so dramatically and so quickly.

          • clay

Oh, he’s certainly there in Eastern Europe and in Southwestern Asia– it doesn’t get reported much in the US popular press.

      • LaChatSayWha

Yeah, that &800 million figure is probably significant. Is that what he needed to get out of debt & have a $100 m left over? They’re so greedy I think they’d want more than $100m but their debts must be enormous.

I hope the financial statements & tax returns are released before he launches the bomb.

        • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

Not going to take the time to track down but Trump made a comment to someone connected to The Apprentice that he’d be back in a few months. In other words, running for office was a marketing ploy to raise his value to NBC.

You know this raises the idea that maybe Trump was intentionally vile from day one of his campaign to blackmail the Republican party – HOPING to be paid to go away. When it didn’t happen, he upped the volume of his bile, both to punish those who wouldn’t pay him off AND to make him so toxic, they that would be forced to reverse their decision and would succumb to blackmail.

    • LookielouE1707

Put another way, $800M is not very much relative to the amount he’ll be able to enrich himself by holding office. He must really not have expected to win.

  • DaddyRay

    Does the offer still stand?

  • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

Do we think Trump will be toast after the tax bill is signed? He will have served his purpose and the Mercers can then install Pence to continue turning America into an oppressive Christian regime.

[Good news is it does look like Mueller has plenty of ammunition against Pence as well]

    • geoffalnutt

      Yup! Pence is going down.

      • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

Or has, and that’s why he is so closely monitored by Mother.

        • Strepsi

ugh, please don’t give me visuals of him eating anyone with that tiny pursed mouth

    • Rambie

The bus could well be idling and ready to go but I suspect they’ll continue to use him as a distraction. They still have medicare/medicaid to destroy, re-vote on whatever tax items get taken out in reconciliation, etc

    • Bluto

Are you visiting Australia or NZ, Mr Skokie?

    • gaycuckhubby

No. There will always be another reason for them to keep him in office. They know impeachment will take down the party faster than Trump staying in power (because Trump will take a scorched earth strategy and destroy everyone on his way out)
And there will always be a Supreme Court to seat threatening to open up, Healthcare repeal, religious freedom bill etc

    • Rambie

Mueller better hit Trump & Pence at once, If Trump falls the GOP’ers will push hard to close it all down and “move on”.

      • clay

Who would they appoint as VP?

        • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

Ryan, the Koch brothers favorite would be next in line.

          • clay

So the Koch’s could get their budget fed directly into the Senate, as well? But that’s unnecessary– Budget is supposed to start in the House and they have both chambers and the Executive Branch, anyway.

          • LaChatSayWha

I think the Kochs are well- represented in the senate already. They own so many current Republicans they’re basically getting their John Birch 1980 wish list enacted.

The worst of America is in charge right now: representatives of the John Birch Society (who were too reactionary & racist for Americans in the fucking 60s), the disciples of Roy Cohn who merged McCarthy with mob racketeering, & the scheming, hypocritical, White Supremacist agents of television evangelists who trace their roots to that evil huckster & Nixon crony Billy Graham. Like in the Third Reich, the governing crew is a mix of resentful failures, scoundrels & opportunists

        • Rambie

That asshole Ryan, speaker of the House is next in line

          • clay

Ryan is next in line for the Presidency, but that doesn’t mean he’d automatically get the VP slot (see, G.Ford)– they’re no dominoes.

Now, if the GOP thinks the House would do better without him . . .

          • Rambie

Oh, I see. I’m talking if Trump and Pence both get taken out by scandal.

Who’d be Pence’s VP, no idea but someone detestable I’m sure.

          • clay

Sorry, I was going off your “If Trump falls . . . “

      • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

AND Ryan has made his Presidential ambitions painfully obvious. His conspicuous distancing from Trump is intentional. Remember his “Speaker Videos” that were basically slickly produced campaign ads?

        • Rambie

Exactly! He’s keeping distance to not get splashed. I’d love to think Mueller has enough dirt on him to take him down too but then… Hatch. *shudders*

Can we hope for a Mars Attacks type of clearing the field?

          • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

I would be willing to accept Ryan if Trump, Ivanka, Jared, Bannon, Mueller, Stone, Conway, etc. are prosecuted.

          • Rambie

If we can’t have Mars Attacks clean slate, that would be acceptable.

          • thatotherjean

Ryan first. We really do need to re-take the House, or we’re still up to our necks in corrupt Republicans.

  • Michael White

Would mother have approved a female running mate for Pence?

    • madknits

Well, she’s black, and a lesbian, so probably.

    • Miji

So does she really not trust him with women or do they make a big deal of this rule so that people won’t question that he’s attracted to women?

      • Strepsi

ahhhh, interesting. And just like homophobes are very often attracted to men, the racists looooove that hot chocolate!

      • Capritaur

Give them some credit, they’re clearly in a domme/cuckold relationship.

      • thatotherjean

It’s one of those weird fundy rules about avoiding temptation and “the appearance of evil.” Too many religious fundamentalists seem to believe that men have no self-control, and will jump the bones of any female who shows a glimpse of cleavage or wears a skirt an inch above her knee—but they should be in charge anyway, because God said so.

Right? If nothing else because Rice obviously deserves to be on the top of that ticket

      • DaddyRay

After the Iraq debacle she deserves to be in prison

I am always tempted to like her b/c of the whole strong black superdyke thing, then I remember her actions & it’s over. She’s a bad person w/ a lot of power & what has she done for the communities that helped her achieve her position? Has she ever given anything back? Is she even out?

    • AmeriCanadian

How would Pence have been able to be in the same room, alone, with Condi?

    • thatotherjean

Half his present base wouldn’t have voted for him.

  • Boreal
  • clay

I want to know how (whoever) arrived at $800 million, and I want to know if it was Trump (or the Trump Organization) who set the figure.

    • Tawreos

It would probably get rid of a huge chunk of debt that the people owed it were getting bitchy about collecting

      • Reality.Bites

Well they were probably bitchy because they knew they’d never find an enforcer who could find his fingers in order to break them.

    • Rambie

Who: One of the kids or Jared is my guess

800M would make a big enough pile to distract Trump like catnip

      • Reality.Bites

I know a family where a son with a drug problem embezzled enough money from the family-owned business to drive it into bankruptcy.

I started thinking it would be nice if one of his kids did something like that, then I realized bankruptcy is literally just another day at the office for him.

      • canoebum

I’ll bet negotiations broke down when The Orange Menace insisted that the money be paid in a way he would have no tax liability. In other words, a secret payoff in an offshore account.

  • Strepsi

I hate Condoleeza Rice but she’s better than the gang of theofascists that ended up running the country, that tidbit is interesting. Also might not have had literal Nazis in the streets.

    • gaycuckhubby

She would have been one of the Republicans I would not have been terrified of. (still wouldn’t have voted for her, just saying)

    • Michael White

Yes, she is the one who screwed up in public and called George II my husband.

    • Rambie

Pence would be terrible POTUS for us, he’d of gotten the ACA repealed and an even worse tax bill passed.

Rice isn’t too bad –for a Republican– but the top of that ticket…

      • BobSF_94117

Without the shit show in the White House, there’s no way any GOP administration would have gotten away with the shenanigans they’re up to. The news would be all about them and their incompetent extremism. It’s only under the cloak of all the outrageous tweets that they’ve been able to do what they’ve done.

        • Rambie

Repealing the ACA was a campaign promise of the GOP’ers for years now. I’m still convinced they’d have repealed it if not for Trump. He praised the House’s repeal bill then later tweeted it was “mean”. He made it worse for repealing than a competent POTUS would have.

Tax wise, the bill wasn’t popular already, and every interview the media did, the GOP’ers talking points were on-game with little to no push back from the media. I’m doubtful the media would have pressured them enough.

          • BobSF_94117

Campaign promise or not, the GOP could not have gotten all its members to throw 37 million people off insurance. With Trump’s bizarre behavior, it was just a lot messier. It still would have failed. Now, they might have been able to come up with some replacement that would have barely passed, but that would have required some actual work.

          • Rambie

Perhaps and I’m sure they’ll try it again in 2019 especially if they get more than 52 seats

  • OdieDenCO

I assume $800 million is either the amount of money donny owes to the mob or the amount of money donny assumes he can steal while president.

    • Strepsi

I have also read a couple of GOPers mentioning that Trump got $1 billion value of free media coverage, which I believe.

      • that a duh. srsly, i don’t watch much TV at all, but i do know what it costs today for one of our major parties to advertise a candidate. a billion is actually a little on the cheap side.

        • canoebum

I read $2 billion, which seems closer to the mark. His antics drove up the eyeball count and ad revenues. They took the money and let the country go to hell.

          • LaChatSayWha

I read $2bn too and that was just from CNN. It’s in that Washington Post article that describes the symbiotic relationship b/ Orange and Jeff Zucker & what Zucker did to get IQ45 elected.

Amazing that this immoral, mean-spirited, self-serving man got elected. Makes me so very sad for our country.

    • DaddyRay

I can’t even count how many times I said “no way he could win” which is why I am convinced our voting machines were also hacked

      • OdieDenCO

yep. there was too much denial after the russian hacking story broke with no investigation to prove those denials were based in fact.

      • clay

(urban centers in Michigan– state law disallows a re-count when more people signed in than votes were counted)

    • greenmanTN

I still believe it’s very possible if not likely that in some key states the paperless voting machines were hacked. In addition to vote suppression, inundation Of Russian bots on social media, etc. this election was literally stolen.

      • canoebum

It was a cyber Pearl Harbor. The Ship of State was sent to the bottom. Who knows when it can be raised, if ever.

        • LaChatSayWha

          Precisely. Well put.

    • Reality.Bites

Honestly I’ve long since lost track of how many times I thought that and which time was first!

    • He. Did. Not. “Win.”

i just have to keep saying that. just yesterday i was reading about ~80,000 “lost” votes, in just one state. that were not counted until this year, and were not tabulated in the so-called final results. the russians saw to that.

  • Kinda Sleeza and Pence?

i guess the russkies are smarter than i thought. that’s a losing ticket if i’ve ever heard of one.

    • Dazzer

Actually, Condaleeza probably worried the Russians more than anyone else in the Shrub administration.

Her expertise in intelligence was all about Russian approaches to strategy – and she was respected for it internationally.

Her problem was that she was NSA head for Bush Jr. All intelligence resources were turned towards the Middle East and she was out of her league in making an authoritative strategy for dealing with the Middle East.

A side-effect of that was that the various intelligence agencies in the US lost – and didn’t replace – their Russianologists, which allowed Russia to build up its resources in relative secrecy.

      • she’s a vapid, scum sucking idiot. trust me on this. i know some of the people who “taught” her.

        • Reality.Bites

Compared to what we have today I would never call her a vapid, scum sucking idiot.

Compared to what came before, well then that’s another matter.

      • LaChatSayWha

She got Rexxon installed & she’s working w/ the Russians with Kissinger. She’s dirty as fuck, unfortunately.

      $800 million.
Money to pay off the Russian oligarchs he is indebted to, plus some extra in the hopes of not being assassinated for his failure to take power and sink the sanctions law, cripple NATO and demolish America’s foreign relations for decades to come.
