Mueller: Paul Manafort Just Wrote Op-Ed With Russian Spy In Attempt To Sway Public Opinion On His Case

The Associated Press reports:

While facing several felony charges, Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been working on an op-ed essay with a longtime colleague “assessed to have ties” to a Russian intelligence service, according to court papers filed Monday by prosecutors working for special counsel Robert Mueller.

In the court filing, prosecutors say Manafort and the colleague sought to publish the op-ed under someone else’s name and intended it to influence public opinion about his work in Ukraine. The op-ed was being drafted as late as last week, with Manafort currently under house arrest. Prosecutors did not name the colleague but noted the person is based in Russia.

In the court filing, prosecutors say the op-ed appeared to violate an admonishment from the judge last month to refrain from public statements. “Even if the ghostwritten op-ed were entirely accurate, fair, and balanced, it would be a violation of this Court’s November 8 Order if it had been published,” the prosecutors wrote.

“The editorial clearly was undertaken to influence the public’s opinion of defendant Manafort, or else there would be no reason to seek its publication (much less for Manafort and his long-time associate to ghostwrite it in another’s name).”

    LOCK HIM UP!!!!

  • The_Wretched

Why did he get the special bail agreement? In any event, it sure looks like Manafort has no desire to play ball and was just playing games with Mueller.

    • Chucktech

I’m sure Mr. Mueller will take note of that.

    • clay

      Because his collar is white.
BTW, Manafort’s not out on bail; he’s out pending an agreement on bail. He hasn’t been negotiating that in good faith (proposing putting up buildings he doesn’t own free and clear) and he now appears to have violate a court order.

  • crewman

Does Manafort somehow think Mueller’s team is incompetent? What an idiot.

    • Lumpy Gaga

Also, too, in this vein: O’Keefe and the Washington Post.

Wake up and smell the coffee, morons.

    • Randy503

He really thinks that he can sway public opinion? And that if “public opinion” is swayed, that Mueller will somehow feel pressure to drop the case? What an idiot. These people really believe their own kookaid.

He’s swayed me. I didn’t think he could be anymore of an asshole.
        I was wrong.

Manafort is from CT. He was in the state house for years. He’s just more of an asshole now than he was then.

Sorry, Robincho, but this one’s on you: in 2017, the singular “they” is perfectly acceptable (for genderqueer people like me, it’s essential! And inasmuch as I wish it weren’t true: yes, you can be genderqueer, AND an idiot. Look how Caitlyn did it for Trans people!)

          • if you missed it, just as Oregon has legalized non-binary identity, here in Washington State, the local NPR affiliate just announced it looks as if we’ll do the same in a year, so birth certificates for adults will be changed to include “x” as opposed to male or female, and children can change to “x” with permission of their parents.

      • Reality.Bites

The one thing that gives me pause in this is that neither Masterson nor the Ranch is (IMO) as important to Netflix as House of Cards. Apart from (and this is a BIG part) having Debra Winger and Sam Elliott, it’s a pretty mediocre sitcom.

So if they’re not doing anything, is he perhaps innocent or they have reason to believe so? I don’t know. Frankly, when something involves present and former Scientoligists I’m not predisposed to believing any of them.

        • Droz

The person who wrote this e-mail is an executive at Disney? Executive standards sure have fallen.

      • LA Julian

The part that gets me about this whole thing is that both the wife and Netflix themselves are outraged that the victim somehow ‘entrapped’ the guy by not revealing preemptively that she WAS one of the victims accusing Masterson, thereby allowing Netflix guy/soccer hubby to spout off, or as they see it, forcibly preventing him from prudently self-censoring his real views.

Not…necessarily. It still could be a chess move to sway people like me, who don’t see much difference between the charges already tendered and “doing jack shit nothing for a year.”

It’s just too blatantly stupid on Manafort’s part. Either he really is that dumb, or they’re playing to the average American common denominator to make people think Mueller actually means business but, in the end, “just couldn’t defeat the Russian coverup against Trump. But he sure tried.”

(Or, there’s only one way to convince me you’re a success in this instance: succeed).

    • bkmn

    • SoCalGal20

      I love her! Fantastic choice!

  • Additional key bits:

“Because Manafort has now taken actions that reflect an intention to violate or circumvent the court’s existing orders … the government submits that the proposed bail package is insufficiently reasonable to assure his appearance as required. The government’s prior general consent to the bail package presupposed that Manafort was complying with the Court’s existing orders.”
    (…)
But the special counsel’s office said in its court filing that “the proposed bail package does not provide for a surety who is not a close family member. It does not provide for GPS monitoring. And it does not provide for a fully secured bond of unencumbered real estate. The Bridgehampton property, which is the largest of the assets in the proposed bail package, is already subject to forfeiture in the Indictment.”

    • Treant

Then let him put up something of appropriate value or go to jail.

Honestly, if he were any of us, this would not be an issue. He’d be in jail, or would have gone to a bail bondsman (or the equivalent).

      • IMHO, he *should* be in jail as a flight risk.

The only way he could do that would be by air, and once at an airport, he could easily hop off at the Atlanta or some other hub airport, collect a phony passport, money and ID, and book a flight to Moscow or some other locale.

Don’t put your buns in the oven.

        • Tomcat

          A little corny, but beefy.

      • Tomcat

        Umm, Reuben.

      • Refugay

        Don’t be sour, kraut.

      • BobSF_94117

Silly, that was Russian undressing. Totally different thing.

    • Treant

I know one Ukranian. Does that count?

      • Gianni

I have Ukrainian cousins and their family always identified themselves as Russian. Odd, considering.

    • Mike_in_the_Tundra

Isn’t there a Russian Blue cat?

    • jerry

Go out to bars in NYC in east village/Chelsea…you’ll meet a few.

“Konstantin, Oleg… Is nothink. These guys could be New York Twins baseball team…”

      • BobSF_94117

        Kilimnik. Kill him, Nick. Code?

    • Tomcat

I wasn’t impressed, and neither was Mueller.

  • Sam_Handwich

so is it likely the judge will throw his fat ass in the slammer?

    • Treant

White, rich, knows Russians…you do the math. 🙂

      • Tread

More than likely, Manafort would be on the receiving end of a shiv, courtesy of our Russian friends. Hence, his home arrest.

    • Tomcat

      Looks like he already has.

      • Tomcat

Bail revoked, I am sure they are not letting him run around inside police station.

        • Lumpy Gaga

Looks like judge is going to let us all know in a week, per <1hour old update on CNN:

The judge has a status conference scheduled in the case for December 11.

Remember trump, when you cannot dig a deep enough hole, use TWITTER.

  • gaycuckhubby

HELP! Interpretation please! What does this mean?

    • Sam_Handwich

      not sure.

    • Tomcat

      Its only Monday.

  • jugomono

How did he make $$MILLIONS? He is a total f*cking moron!

    • Tomcat

He knows where the bodies are buried.

  • Jim Maloney

“These people….” as my father used to say in an exasperated voice.

  • Sam_Handwich

not sure what’s going on in the house

    200 yes

    200 no

there are now 16 GOP no votes on going to conference.

is this just a trick to bring the senate bill to the floor?

    • gaycuckhubby

If it doesn’t go to conference then the straight Senate bill will be voted on no?

      • Tomcat

        I doubt that.

      • Taylor Bixler

In theory yes, that would be the path forward to a Drumpf signature. But there are things in the senate bill the tea partiers in the house will balk at I think.

    • Taylor Bixler

Some were holding up conference vote as future funding bill leverage it seems. Thread…

    • Ninja0980

Could be a trick or it could be house members that know they’ll be toast if this bill passes and want to stop it.

  • LOCK. HIM. UP.

  • Tomcat

The House is NOT in order, he is pissed too.

  • BobSF_94117

Gosh, lighten up. The poor man is stuck in his apartment with nothing to do but treason…

  • Ninja0980

Guess he thinks Trump will pardon him.
Only reason I can think you would be this stupid.

    • boatboy_srq

Never discount innate capacity. Or in this case lack thereof.

  • vtdave

So he’s doing what all the #Drumph minions are doing…producing “fake news”! I wonder what “news” outfit would print a ghost-written piece? Would it sound like “eff yews”

  • Charlie In SF

Putin’s ghostwriting? How stupid are these people??

  • Robincho

When he DOES die, by whatever means, the sound we’ll hear will be a monofart. And a tiny one, at that…

  • Doesn’t treason have the death penalty?

  • boatboy_srq

Pwrhaps he’s thinking 25-to-life is less unpleasant than a single cup of Polonium tea.

  • Henry Auvil

The only positive thing I can say about Manfort is that mouth looks like it sucks dick really well. It will serve him well in a federal lockup.

  • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

Ermagerd, how dumb IS this guy?

  • JCF
  • DaveMiller135

I’m no lawyer, but this seems ill-advised.

  • Manafort doesn’t seem to know when to leave well enough alone. What a stupid move on his part.

  • Puckfair52

Even after his arrest he was not finished with being a foreign tool & agent and he was more than willing as evidenced by this with showing up for the task presented to him! He needs to be removed from the US public for it’s safety
