Emails Contradict White House On Michael Flynn

The New York Times reports:

When President Trump fired his national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, in February, White House officials portrayed him as a renegade who had acted independently in his discussions with a Russian official during the presidential transition and then lied to his colleagues about the interactions.

But emails among top transition officials, provided or described to The New York Times, suggest that Mr. Flynn was far from a rogue actor. In fact, the emails, coupled with interviews and court documents filed on Friday, showed that Mr. Flynn was in close touch with other senior members of the Trump transition team both before and after he spoke with the Russian ambassador, Sergey I. Kislyak, about American sanctions against Russia.

On Dec. 29, a transition adviser to Mr. Trump, K. T. McFarland, wrote in an email to a colleague that sanctions announced hours before by the Obama administration in retaliation for Russian election meddling were aimed at discrediting Mr. Trump’s victory. The sanctions could also make it much harder for Mr. Trump to ease tensions with Russia, “which has just thrown the U.S.A. election to him,” she wrote in the emails obtained by The Times.

RELATED: McFarland ran for the US Senate in 2006, losing the GOP primary to John Spencer, who then lost to Hillary by 36 points. McFarland then joined Fox News as a national security analyst.

      Trump, not so much

Not only was Nixon smart, he hired smart people. Many people assumed that Trump had a bunch of smart people around him, like you or I would do if we had inherited money but were personally dumb as stumps.

        Instead he has sycophantic idiots.

This seems to me to be a White house insider, KT McFarland, writing, as a matter of course, in a matter-of-fact manner, that he accepts, and everyone else presumably accepts, that Russia ” has just thrown the election” to Trump/turd !

And that’s an admission from Trump’s own team !!
It appears the Trum/turd team knew that to be the case. Little wonder Trump/turd is so deferential to Putin; he accepts that Putin gave him the White House.

          • Lizard

I dunno…history has examples of cult leaders having followings which rapidly turn on then when the followers realize they’ve been had. Not all of them, maybe, but enough.

            Savonarola comes to mind.

          • Cuberly Deux

Ha! The religious example is rather apropos.

After seeing the double, triple and quadrupling down of Moore’s cult supporters I’m not so sure. Dominionists are heavily invested in Donnie. Not sure there exists a reasonable bone in their body.

          • Lizard

Italians were pretty heavily invested in Mussolini after WWII, too, and they hung him and his girlfriend on meat hooks.

They aren’t reasonable, but I can’t wait to see what happens after the first tax “reforms” begin to take effect. How will they feel when they lose their insurance and their taxes double?

          • David Walker

They will feel that Obama and Hillary forced congress into doing that and that the deep state lizard people forced 45 to sign it.

          • Lizard

Look, my opinion of Trump supporters’ critical thinking skills is somewhere in the fourth or so circle of imaginary Hell and I still don’t see how anyone can twist their brain to come to that conclusion. That would be a helluva mental gymnastics act.

          • David Walker

It, like all the other shit, would be red meat thrown to the throng. If they sniff it, the banana republicans will be encouraged to continue, perhaps to gin it up a bit. If, however, the deplorables eat it up yum, expect it to continue. It’s cheaper than a focus group and can even get Alex and Rush and Sean into continuing it. Look…after last night/this morning, I put no hope, faith, or trust in the non-progressives, so why not a scenario like this?

          • Cuberly Deux

Well, I’m of the opinion that there’s a very well funded propaganda machine with very very deep pockets at work. We’re seeing oligarchs working to purchase corporate media outlets. There’s a pretty heavy push to remake our country and our society as a whole right now. Religious zealots and moneyed interests that sort of tolerate each other as long as they don’t get in each others way.

I know I’m being pessimistic but I think it’ll have to get BAD, dangerously so before there’s any effort to flip the crazy. And it’ll be a clash against a powerful determined juggernaut.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

I think also that nobody on their side (I mean the small potatoes people, not the Kochs or Mercers or Eric Prince level monsters) should be forgiven unless they’re willing to publicly admit they’re wrong and why they chose wrong.

    https://twitter.com/The_UnSilent_/status/936571602195636225

    • LesbianTippingHabits

If the Trump Administration wants to Make America Great Again ( a la the 1950s ), why not 1950s-style tax rates?

Way back when, the typical family of four paid virtually no income tax.

Citizens didn’t have as much of a problem re rich people, because rich people paid a lot of taxes. Some, like author Stephen King of Maine, still do.

Most don’t. And real people – on the left and right – have taken notice.

      • McSwagg

Pair that with an appropriate minimum wage properly indexed for inflation and productivity growth since the 1950s and many of society’s problems would be truly be diminished.

    • BobSF_94117

The problem is that lower taxes create too much wealth floating around looking for something to buy or invest in. Money that would otherwise churn through “redistribution” in the form of subsidized income and public works projects instead accumulates at the top. So the people at the top invest in what’s available. And not much is, compared to the money they have. So stock prices rise. Real estate rises. The prices of luxury goods rise.

All of this is fine and dandy, heady even, until the day arrives when everyone looks at the expensive stocks and real estate and realizes, “Shit, this stuff isn’t worth that!!!!”. And down we all go…

At first, I was just repeating each name, ala Arya Stark, each night…but the list got too long. So we need a more permanent record of all the traitors. But it may end up the length of the Bayeux Tapestry.

          • McSwagg

Rachel Madow recently (this week) admitted that she can no longer keep track mentally of all the Russians that had contact with the dRumpf campaign. She finally had to commit the list to paper. At latest count, 19 Russians were successful in making contacts with various people associated with dRumpf and his campaign.

I feel her pain…..i am doing my best to keep track of events from Europe. We don’t get anything like what you guys get.
But I’m in USA this week ( for a long time ) so I will catch up, no doubt.

You can listen to Rachel on Stitcher. It’s posted nightly shortly after the live broadcast.

          • McSwagg

That’s the beauty of a podcast. You can listen when you want to. Until just recently, Stitcher had only the latest broadcast for Rachel, but recently they began archiving past shows.

That’s 5 hours not six- are you in the U.K. Not Europe? Isn’t it easier to keep track from there?

I know, it’s a rude Brecht joke, sorry. I took the Eurostar two weeks ago for an overnight, everyone was asking “I thought you went to the U.K. Now you’re texting from Europe?”

          • JackFknTwist

Five hours difference with Ireland/UK; six hours difference Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Rome.

As regards ‘keeping track’ from here on US developments, hahaha, Yeah, it’s challenging…….and we are in the middle of the melt down caused by the UK voting to leave the EU. …..i.e, – Brexit.
hat issue is now almost as 24 hour news as Trump/turd and his Merry Men.

Naaaaw, the Trumpster won’t resign – he’ll have to be dragged out of the White House kicking and screaming after he sets a huuuuuuge conflagration to burn the place to the ground something like Nero and Rome. I imagine he would feel that no one else would deserve to live there after his grandiosity has graced the place with his gilded pomposity and bombast.

        • Galvestonian

Oh hell, a gallows is too damn neat – we have to get a National Razor built to chop some necks – I’ll even volunteer to sharpen that blade – not that I’m any good at sharpening blades – it might end up being a bit blunt and rusty so any action it sees will be a bit ( maybe just a tad ) more on the messy & painful side. After all, they’re just Republicans.

        • Renfield

I’ve been saying we need a French or Russian style revolution. I’m very glad others have the same view. I would eliminate most of the “staff” and “secretaries” to the idiot along with the GOP leadership. BUT I’d happily settle the leadership, as hopefully the rest would get the message. We should annul all trump actions, everything set back to January 19 2017. And of course eliminate all the judges he nominated and were confirmed, along with their rulings as invalid.

Question: Why is nobody talking about the elephant in the room? The Statement of Offense released by Mueller’s office after Flynn’s court appearance yesterday references something significant. It states that Flynn was working with “very senior transition team officials.” That’s officials with an ‘s.’ And that’s “very senior” officials. Those were Mueller’s words. We already know that one of them was Kushner. So what other “very” senior transition official is there besides Kushner? It wouldn’t anyone lateral to Flynn: only senior to him. The only name that comes to mind is Pence. The HEAD of the transition team.
I think Pence is very much in Mueller’s cross hairs. I’ve been watching TV (mostly MSNBC) since then and waiting for someone to speak to this but I haven’t heard diddly.

    Thoughts?

    • Cuberly Deux

Actually quite a few of us have been discussing that. I for one would throw Donnie Jr. into that mix.

      • Steven B

He was senior. Not ‘very’ senior. My 2 cents. And Mueller chooses his words carefully. I suppose that there could be more than two. I just have a gut feeling that Pence is in some very hot water.

        • Treant

“Result of a sperm receptacle’s conception of Head Honcho’s hellspawn” is pretty very senior. 🙂

I usually just say “fuck trophy” or “crotch fruit,” but people who like children tend to object for some tiny reason or another.

My (married but childless) snarky fag hag likes to call them uterus turds.

      “Agnew first.”

      • Joe in PA

So…if Pence goes first (Agnew first)…who would donnie nominate? Nixon nominated Ford who just happened to be the minority leader in the house. Hmmmm.

        • Reality.Bites

I doubt anyone today would get the easy pass by the Democrats in Congress that Ford did. And they’ll have to make a solid commitment to not pardoning anyone.

Rachel called out Pence’s lie bout Flynn last January.

      • Steven B

But she’s not talking about it now in light of the Statement of Offense.

        • McSwagg

She spoke last night about how narrowly structured the statement is in regard to what Flynn has received immunity for. Flynn can still be on the hook for any number of other offences. Mueller did not grant Flynn blanket immunity in any sense.

    • 2guysnamedjoe

Seems Mueller is taking out blocks from the lower strata of the Jenga stack, in order to topple the whole damn thing, especially Il Cheeto di Tutti Capi.

      • another_steve

Love to you, joe, for “Il Cheeto di Tutti Capi.”

I studied Italian for two years in university. Lovely language.

There’s a reason so many operas are sung in it.

      • Reality.Bites

I was reading an article yesterday mentioning “The Prisoner’s Dilemma” which is used in game theory.

Forgive me if I don’t explain it properly, but basically the idea is several prisoners locked in separate cells. Without testimony there is not enough evidence and they all go free. If one talks, that one gets a good deal and the rest get a harsh sentence. As more confess, less incentive to give them a good deal.

So the gist of this is that given that Flynn got an amazing deal, he gives Meuller enough that he’s not expecting to have to make too many more – and to scare people into talking while they still can make one.

        • McSwagg

And that’s why Manafort will likely get no deal.

    • Acronym Jim

Sessions was also part of the campaign. Was he senior to Flynn?

      • Steven B

        I don’t think so.

    • SoCalGal20

      Pence and Kushner for sure.
Perhaps this Wiki article on the Trump transition team will give some more ideas. There’s a section just on the team members.

    • another_steve

The problem is that with today’s 24-hour TV news cycle, every TV journalist feels tremendous pressure (from her/his employer) to be the “first” to get a breaking story out there.

This rush to get it out sometimes results in wrong or inaccurate reporting.

      • Ninja0980

And it results in helping idiots like Trump.

        • gaycuckhubby

Thats the weird part, though. He’s not… he had a long career in very advanced positions. Getting tons of clearances and seeing lots of high level national security dwtails.
          His story is very odd.

          • Dazzer

Not sure about that. Having worked with people who worked in intelligence services some years ago, it’s possible to get quite a way up the greasy pole, not because you know and think a lot, but rather because you think consistently within one way of thinking.

It’s difficult to explain. A person can progress through an organisation because they always think the way a person in the organisation is supposed to think – not because they’re in any way intelligent or capable themselves. Instead, they always follow the handbook and get moderately reasonable results.

They play the probabilities – they never experience any major successes, but they never have responsibility for having any major fuck-ups, either.

          • Bj Lincoln

          • BobSF_94117

            And getting fired…

        • Cuberly Deux

On CNN they interviewed a retiredGeneral that had worked with Flynn through the years. He said he liked Flynn and thought of him as trustworthy. Then the General spoke about how all that changed after Obama fired him, he was stunned that he would court foreign entities and sell himself the way he did. The General was flat out shocked, said he couldn’t understand what happened to change him to such an extreme.

I just thought it was an interesting observation. Maybe getting canned after 30 years of service made him short circuit. But yeah, he sure threw caution to the wind.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

OT: I’m really sorry to say this but Brock Turner is trying to appeal his conviction. He got off super easy and he’s STILL refusing to accept what little punishment he got. It’s beyond enraging that the victim had two witnesses (something that almost NEVER happens) testify on her behalf and he gets less than a year and he’s all “oh, noes, have to register as a sex predator!”

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/juliareinstein/turner-appeal?utm_term=.sh8vBvgJ0#.gcxRARNza

“Brock Turner, who served just three months in prison after being convicted last year of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman behind a dumpster in January 2015, filed a motion in court Friday to have his conviction overturned.

Records show that Turner’s legal team filed their appeal in California’s 6th District Court of Appeal. According to the motion, which was obtained by BuzzFeed News, his lawyers argue that his trial had been “a detailed and lengthy set of lies.”

    • Ninja0980

      Learned from Trump and others.

    • safari

Is he trying to say off the sex offender list or something?

      • Reality.Bites

I’d imagine. But just having a conviction for anything on your record is a huge deal.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

Yes. Being on the sex offender list is something that turns up in employment searches by companies, and you can’t live within a certain distances of various places like schools (though may be that’s just for child predators, not sure). I’m also fairly sure most apartment buildings would say no to renting to him. Even if he found a woman dumb enough to overlook a rape conviction, I doubt she’d be happy with an unemployable bum who can’t live a lot of places. Also, if I were the woman’s ex-husband or father/parent of any of her kids, I’d soooooooooo demand full custody rather than have the kids live with a sex offender.

I have heard of the occasional child predator who got chased out of places when the neighbors figured out what he had gone to jail for and the reason they knew a predator was in the neighborhood was that they got a heads up from a registry.

        • Treant

I’ve seen Jerry Springer and Maury. While the women he attracts may not be up to the nines…well, neither is he.

But attract them, somehow, he will. Look at what Mama June went after–a kiddie rapist who had already molested one of her own children.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

That really depresses me. And often women of that degraded caliber often blame their children for “making” the predator “cheat” on them then wonder decades later why said children refuse to pay for their nursing home or send pics of the grandkids.

          • Treant

This is (one of the reasons) why I don’t approve of the “nothing is my fault” philosophy. Being dumbass and blaming others is a very quick way of getting the people in your life to write you off.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

A lot of Christians like to use the whole “Jesus forgave me and we’re all sinners so you can’t stay mad at me” spiel to their victims.

I read a letter once where a woman confessed that her husband broke one of her daughters’ arms as kids, she covered it up and now neither daughter talks to her as adults. The advice giver was all “You can say you’re sorry and hope for the best but if you think apologizing means you have the right to demand a place in their lives, no way. And if they still hate you, that’s their right.”

        • gaycuckhubby

The sex offender list is a joke and doesnt work like it was intended.

        • Bj Lincoln

There was a ‘half way house’ in our neighborhood and we all got a notice that a child molester had moved in. You can bet there were no kids near the place and everyone kept an eye out. The person knew we were all watching. Nothing ever happened. We were never given notice when he moved.

    • Treant

He has every right to, if he has a valid concern that justice was not carried out properly.

The court also has every right to laugh loudly and toss him out if they see no merit in his argument.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’m hoping that the court manages to say, “You’re wasting my time, go back to jail!”

I’m just grossed out because he got off way easy and he’s all “I’m the victim! I’m the victim!”

        • Treant

Yes, that’s problematic and most annoying. 🙂

      • Reality.Bites

suits wrinkle easily. it’s not at all uncommon for someone who wants to look good to travel with a steamer and touch up as needed. but usually not while wearing the clothes – it’s fracking steam, after all.

More proof that Trump is dead below the waist.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

It really is weird the wearing it part. Most commercials for steamers have it on a hanger.

          • Reality.Bites

I’ve used a steamer (non travel). It’s putting out… hot steam. I’d probably be OK having you use it on me while wearing a shirt and suit jacket, but suit pants are pretty thin and porous.

Even if I had a lackey to steam for me, I’d probably prefer to remove the clothing. if you’re close enough to steam me, you’re close enough to see me in a shirt and (I’m betting) grandpa boxers

How about Rosie O’Donnell as Sarah Huckabee? There was that actor Leslie Jordan, IIRC, mentioned in the blog before as a possibility for Jeff Sessions. I am actually behind a ScarJo casting as Ivanka though I think it would be funny to cast the woman who played Phoebe on friends.

As for the main players, not a clue.

      • Reality.Bites

Well Leslie Jordan always comes to mind – in an episode of Will & Grace Karen referred to his (sad) character looking like Jeff Sessions watching a black person vote.

But that’s just the sort of physical resemblance casting that almost never seems to happen in based on a true story movies.

I was also about to say “plus Leslie Jordan’s an old man, would he have the stamina” and I see now he’s only 62.

My dad would actually cut a Big Mac in half (no milk shake or fries) because he thought a whole one was too much grease. He’d spit in disgust at eating 8 times as much grease in one setting by one man.

Does he have a cursed antique because his heart should be a non-functioning lardball by now.

      • Sam_Handwich

i love their fries so long as they are fresh out of the fryer

        • Treant

I was famous, in college, for asking for my fries “burned.” The ladies would see me coming and drop already-done fries back into the frier until they were darkest brown.

        • Treant

Yeah, I gotta admit, sometimes I just get cravings for that stuff. I can usually deflect it, but occasionally?

Long John Silver’s, here I come. And yes, I want the extra hushpuppies. Make it two orders, in fact.

My husband won’t eat fish (understandably; he stinks of iodine for days afterward and nobody can figure out why), so I have to eat it on the sly, usually at the same time I’m having a fat craving.

      • Snarkaholic

I lost my ruddy Abysinnian ‘Beau’ last night and I buried him next to the flower garden today on the sunny side of our house. He was 15 years old and his kidneys just shut down. He owned me. I planted a pair of gardenias on his grave and buried him with some really kicker catnip, his favorite mousie and some cat snacks. I liberally watered his grave with tears. He was more than ‘just a cat’ – he was my friend, my companion and someone who knew and comforted me in many different situations. He was a watch cat and a protector, vigilant against any mice or insects, he cuddled and held my finger with his paws, he was very affectionate and was liberal with headbutts and slobbery kisses. I miss him so much.

      • zhera

So sorry for your loss! He sounds like an amazing friend. ♥

        • Galvestonian

What you have to realize is that ‘Beau’ was an Abysinnian cat – the original Egyptian cat God and bred and worshipped for thousands of years – intelligent and devoted to their owners – they are truly totally amazing cats – very much different that a domestic house cat and fun and awesome to live with – they are interested in you personally and sometimes you think that they believe that they are human and just waiting to transition into human form. They have the intelligence of a 3 or 4 year old human.

Should say, since Frankenstein is blatantly stolen from your religion’s golem stories. 🙂

Even before that, you can probably find Ur-examples. The core story for Pinnochio (“Pine Head”) is absolutely ancient.

        • another_steve

Golem mythology is based on the animating of the inanimate. Mud and rocks and the like. Not on once-dead human parts.

    • Reality.Bites

Yes. Fortunately there are so many parts of New York with the buildings of the era intact. And absolutely amazing things can be done with CGI these days to add or remove things that are era-inappropriate.

It’s something that network period shows have always fallen down on the job with, due to production being so rushed.

      • worstcultever

interesting – and who knows, maybe by now they’ve got somewhere in Toronto with the NYC look totally down

        • Reality.Bites

University Ave. is often used as a substitute for Manhattan streets as it’s a broad, divided street with skyscrapers from the 60s onwards.

What we (and most cities) lack are lots of OLD tall buildings tightly packed.

The opening scene of Hairspray shows how well we can emulate the early 60s, even in quite wide shots – but not 1960s Manhattan.

Manhattan’s special. You can do lots of close up stuff that could very well be there, but you can’t pull back the camera too far.

Heroes did some very impressive “location” shooting in its day. Everything was shot in the Los Angeles area, using locations and or CGI and or green screen. Like Hiro’s arrival in New York. The CGI of Times Square works in part because the other scenes are shot tightly enough that you never see it’s not New York. LA does have some sections downtown that can pass for NY in a pinch.

had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the
      poor and needy.”

      Or James 5:1-5:6

“Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.[a] 6 You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.”

And what a beautiful Libra she is! Sam was the 4th dog who found us, all of them were “used” or “previously owned” and until the sudden diagnosis of fully metastasized cancer, we’d always planned to adopt a younger brother or sister for him. Each of our 3 previous losses occurred after we had a “back up” pup for a few years before Bink, Lady & Casey all left us. We had no indication that he was sick….until the night of 10/30. That day we’d gone on a long hike with my brother & his dog…who Sam loved. The next morning he was clearly not himself. Our visit to an emergency vet clinic did not turn out at all as we’d hoped. So….we will move next Sunday with 4 urns. But….our new house already has a large doggy door, we took that as a good omen for happy times ahead.

They are the only large cats that can’t roar, they can only purr.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

It’s odd to me since I heard adult pet cats don’t really meow to each other but mostly towards humans. So it’s a little odd for a cheetah to meow.

        • Mike_in_the_Tundra

I’ve only heard a mother cat meow to her kittens.

        • Mikey

I’ve seen adult cats communicate with each other through meows, but it is unusual.
My big boy has such a huge vocabulary we can almost 100% know what each of his meows mean.

        • Reality.Bites

And adult wolves don ‘t bark. Both meowing and barking are primarily child to parent behaviour.

My first dog barked so rarely that most people thought he couldn’t. He was rather like the kid in the old joke who never speaks till finally one day when he’s six he says the soup is cold. When asked why he never spoke before he said, “Up to now everything’s been OK.” He would bark – once only – if the vacuum cleaner got too close, or if he was otherwise annoyed/started/disturbed. I took his barks seriously – he was not happy when he barked.

          • thatotherjean

I had a cat (RIP, Sidney) who never meowed until his extreme old age, and then only to let us know that he needed something, urgently.

      • Mikey

        also non-retractable claws, like dogs.
sadly, the species is functionally extinct. there simply isn’t enough genetic variety.
cheetahs have always been my spirit animal.

        That’s why cheetahs never prosper.

Note, to be accurate: the email establishes coordination between Flynn and the rest of the transition team on his calls w/Kislyak, and the solicitous stance towards Russia that we’ve seen during the campaign and the administration, but not a definite acknowledgment by the prospective ambassador to Singapore (way, way over there) that Russia promoted Drumpf.

Kushner is too stupid to realize the trouble he’s in. If Mueller can hire additional prosecutors he should hire Chris Christie, and assign him the task of prosecuting Jared. Christie put Jared’s father in prison. It seems only appropriate he should put Jared there also.

I have no information on that. Why?

          • johncAtl

Massive tax cuts for the rich, and the blue states are going to pay more than red states. They actually have for years, but it’s going to be worse.

Own a private jet? Great, you won’t pay any taxes related to that plane. That’s actually in the bill. The Democrats should be able to win seats based on this bill. But the leadership of the party (Pelosi, Schumer, Feinstein…) are only interested in keeping their positions in Congress. We keep losing when it comes to important issues. They need to go.

Religion News Service has a jeremiad about the GOP and its tax bill. Fun reading.

    http://religionnews.com/2017/12/01/the-tax-bill-what-happened-to-family-values-and-pro-life-principles/

Endowed with the power to actually legislate good, to help families, to secure a brighter future for our children, Republican politicians have chosen greed, racism and hypocrisy rather than “family values” and “pro-life” principles we’ve been hearing about for years.

Could it be the illegal obtaining of the medication, including using other peoples’ scripts? Or maybe the stated notion that rubbers are oppressive? Or acting on medical advise given by people who are not doctors?

All that followed by the claim that he was being incredibly careful?

Yeah, this is another case where it’s too bad he contracted HIV, and I sympathize with the disease, but wish he’d stop making excuses and take some damned responsibility for what he did. He decided to forego the rubbers. He took bad medical advice from people who weren’t doctors and ran with it.

HIV happens. We get that. And nobody’s perfect and things do happen. We get that, too. But this was a multiple event fuck-up that could have been corrected at any time by, just maybe, getting competent medical advice at Planned Parenthood, any free clinic, and so on rather than listening to your friends who know nothing, and realizing that rubbers may not be the most enjoyable thing, but they do help stop infections. Which has been drumbeat into everybody’s head since the 1980’s.

      • gaycuckhubby

For me it was the insinuation that somehow this was all the government and health professionals fault.

It didn’t help. He also got offended when a medical doctor told him point-blank that he was being reckless.

This is why I’m always less than fully compassionate when I’m expected to have sympathy for somebody who just did something monumentally stupid that should have been a gigantic red flag to any even faintly reasonable individual, and just had horrible (but entirely predictable) things happen to them.

Sympathy, yes. But not that much. Again, shit happens. And sometimes it happens unexpectedly and you couldn’t see it coming. And sometimes you walked under a sign reading “SHIT HAPPENS HERE” in bright neon lights.

          • gaycuckhubby

Oh I have complete sympathy and compassion for him, I wouldn’t wish this upon anyone. But having compassion doesn’t mean I don’t get to criticize the deflection of responsibility and the attempt to smear health professionals who were giving good advice.

      • gaycuckhubby

The headline from the Huffington Post really pisses me off

        • Treant

True. It’s not a single-chain event. The lack of PrEP didn’t directly cause him to contract HIV. That, and his aversion to all other methods of blocking the infection including rubbers and choosing other types of sex that don’t have the same risk of transmission certainly contributed.

        • BobSF_94117

I stopped reading the HuffPo gay section when they insisted adopting the word “queer” was necessary.

      • Ninja0980

I love the Gollum J tweets. They are absolutely superb.

But I’ve listened to Serkis a lot over the years and I recognise his voice. That said, there ought to be a campaign to have Serkis read out some of these tweets in his Gollum voice.

It’s the kind of thing that would really tickle Serkis’s sense of humour.

          • medaka

I’ve heard others say the same thing: Serkis please read Gollum J.

When the writer is on, he’s very very on, and Andy could get up on his haunches and Gollum J the fuck out of the America’s Preciousdent. OrksNews vs the ELFBI! The problem is that most Americans wouldn’t be watching that channel or wouldn’t understand the words, or am I just a jaundiced expat. Guess I am.

      What the fuck is that?

      • OdieDenCO

trying to discredit the FBI before he is charged

        • Halou

Surely there are more intelligent ways to do that.

          • Reality.Bites

I don’t think there’s a single criminal step he’s taken that couldn’t have been done more intelligently.

I think that when the time comes for Mueller to write his memoirs we’ll discover that for all its importance, this was a relatively simple white-collar crime investigation.

          • OdieDenCO

there are but this is the caliber of the pResident

      • Reality.Bites

I think it’s part of the announcement that henceforth the FBI will wear brown shirts.

Be like the NY FBI office that went after Hillary.

I can’t wait for the day that America gets a president who doesn’t call for the firing or imprisonment of journalists who question him, hurt his feelings or report the truth. A president that doesn’t call for the purging of his political opponents? How strange an idea.

Trying to think of where else they do that… Maybe Russia and Turkey?

        • Halou

Pretty much any country that Trump goes out of his way to be nice to and not condemn for it’s behaviour.

Turkey, Russia, Saudi, Philippines, NoKo (with regard to human rights at least), Syria. Etc… He’s too busy downgrading American-British relations with “fake news” tweets from British fascists.

The last podcast from Preet Bharara mentioned how Turkey is involved in this Putin/Russia/USA debacle. This thing goes way deeper than what’s being reported mainstream.

The info from the podcast (a tiny bit at the very beginning, an offhand throwaway) was so convoluted and crazy that even in this year of insanity I had to listen to it again to make sure I was understanding correctly…. It involves an attempt by Turkey to get Flynn to kidnap Gulen (a US Green Card holder).

Here’s an article that covers some of it: https://www.emptywheel.net/2017/11/10/the-flynn-turkey-deal-raises-the-obstruction-stakes-for-the-preet-bharara-firing/

Can we foment rebellion in their Kurdish provinces as retaliation? If they complain about being attacked by a fellow NATO member we can call it Karma and go at them harder for it!

          • whollyfool

            I vote for you.

        • Tor

And Egypt and Chechnya and Zimbabwe. You know, the BEST places.

    • OdieDenCO

nice. can’t repeal the 1st amendment, try tying up anyone reporting the truth in court and sully their rep with slander.

      • Halou

He did say he was going to ‘reform’ the nation’s libel laws so people can sue news outlets and make lots of money.
        Principles? Nope. Profits? Hell yeah!

      The First Amendment protects incompetence.

      Sad !

OT, but I love stuff like this. Cecil B DeMille made a silent version of The Ten Commandments and had a massive Egyptian set built. After filming was finished he didn’t want other directors/studios using HIS expensive set so they buried the whole thing in the California desert. For the past several years there has been an ongoing archeological dig to recover it and the set pieces made of wood and plaster is remarkably well preserved due to the dryness and protection from the elements. The head of one of the sphinxes (there were several) has recently been found.
