Paul Manafort Asks Court To OK Bail Deal With Mueller

Talking Points Memo reports:

A month after turning himself in for charges he faces connected to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort reached a bail deal with Mueller’s team, according to court documents filed by Manafort’s lawyers Thursday.

Manafort’s lawyers are now seeking for a federal judge to approve of his release under the conditions laid out in the court filing. Manafort has offered Mueller as bail four of his real estate properties in New York, Virginia, and Floridia, which his lawyers claimed were worth a total of $11.65 million.

Additionally, Manafort and his wife have agreed not to travel internationally, and Manafort would also limit his domestic travel to Florida, Virginia, New York and the District of Columbia. For any additional domestic travel, Manafort would seek the permission of the court, his lawyers said.

Are Vegas oddsmakers taking bets how long till he flees the country on a private jet?

    • Tawreos

How far from the courthouse to the nearest airfield?

    • Uncle Mark

Manafort could flee via private jet, or he could just go down to Mar-a-Lago and leave on some Russian oligarch’s yacht docked nearby. (Maybe one of the two docked are still docked there since the time Trump went down there for Thanksgiving.). I have to imagine that Mueller knows this too, so Manafort must have handed over a truckload of information to get this degree of freedom

      • SkokieGuy [ChicagoAdjacentGuy]

And what are the odds that he is under 24 / 7 surveillance?

    • clay

Last year the Russians had a submarine causing problems within landing distance of the US NE coast.

      • Paula

All it would take is one zodiac boat coming up to a remote spot on the coast and bye bye Manafort.

      • BearEyes

Near the Coast Guard Academy in CT for one

        • William

Or the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. He could park his car and everyone would pretend it was a suicide.

  • Treant

And with that, I’m knocking the needle one notch back toward, “Mueller is paid off and this is one gigantic sham.”

If Mueller does OK a bail deal, it goes three more notches. If Manafort then disappears magically, it slams straight to the “Complete Fucking Joke” peg and does not move.

    • Lazycrockett

Im sure Manafort is being tailed 24/7.

They may *promise* not to travel internationally, but if they did, and got asylum somewhere, say Russia, how would they be brought back? Deny bail. This is too important.

    • Paula

He wouldn’t. The CIA is firmly in the repubs pocket, we would have to rely on MI 6

He has three US passports THAT WE KNOW OF, and how many passports from other countries?????

    • clay

I wonder if that’s why it specifies no travel abroad, rather than simply surrendering his passport?

      • Treant

Why we don’t take the ones we know about is beyond me. He probably wouldn’t travel on those anyway, and why tempt fate?

        • William

It might be easier to trace his escape if he uses a known passport. Provided he doesn’t take a direct flight to Moscow and catch a ride at the air stairs.

But he was paid $12.5 million for his work in Ukraine, and the Cyprus ledger suggests that it was actually $28.5 million.

    • jerry

And previously, those properties weren’t considered good enough for bail because they were mortgaged to the hilt.

Seriously? If a guy in an insane asylum can escape and fly to another state on his own, what’s to prevent a millionaire with four known passports and the assistance of a foreign government? Manafort should be locked up, not on house arrest.

      Tinfoil hat department:

They have what they need from him in depositions and that’s the deal – he gets to disappear. And his value to them was in who he flipped on.

      • Stubenville

Logically you may be correct, but I still like the optics of people associated with Cheetolini in orange jumpsuits and handcuffs.

        • Reality.Bites

While my idea is farfetched, frankly so is the idea that any of us are more aware of the flight risks than Mueller.

And if this is part of Mueller’s plan to screw up as treant said elsewhere in the thread… then we’re done anyway.

      • Uncle Mark

It’s probably one of the reasons the shitgibbon as seemed extra batshit crazy on the twitter-machine this week. I’ve heard rumors that the week is supposed to end with a BANG

      • canoebum

His testimony in court will be required. If they ease his house arrest, which I think is a very bad idea, they should keep him under close surveillance at all times. I have no doubt he’d make a break for a private plane or a fast boat to be picked up in the Atlantic by friendly transport (i.e. the Russian Navy) or some oligarch’s yacht.

  • The_Wretched

More tea leaves. It’s hard to tell the difference between privilege and Manafort having given something substantial to Mueller.

I’d like the brass tacks to start showing up.

  • kareemachan

Now if these properties are worth that much, will they be taxed for that amount or will he just go back to his “adjusted” worth for that…

  • TheManicMechanic

He won’t need those houses anyway after he skips bail and hides in Russia.

  • Halou

This, after Mike Flynn already cuts a deal. I don’t think Manafort has anything left which Mueller wants that would justify him saying yes to this.
And besides, Manafort wasn’t arrested so that Mueller could cut a deal with him, he was arrested to be a contrast to Papadopoulos who made a plea deal and, essentially, got away with his crimes with his freedom intact. Anyone else in on the plot, like Mike Flynn, would see that holding out like Manafort did makes bad things happen to them so they promptly fall over themselves to do as they’re told.

  • HZ81

Isn’t he under house arrest? Fuck this guy.

    • William

But house arrest is so uncomfortable!!

    • jerry

Or sadly, they might not even survive the arrest.

  • Mike

Of course Manafort offered his houses as bail, he won’t need them anymore after he and the wife settle in Russia. Who knows how many more passports he has stashed in Florida, Virginia, New York or DC, or how many private jets are at his disposal. Lock him up!
