Pentagon: Today’s North Korean Missile Launch Could Have Reached Anywhere In The World [VIDEO]

CNN International reports:

North Korea fired what the US military believes to be an intercontinental ballistic missile on Tuesday as the Pentagon confirmed that it detected and tracked a single North Korean projectile at 1:17 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

“The missile was launched from Sain Ni, North Korea, and traveled about 1,000 kilometers before splashing down in the Sea of Japan, within Japan’s Economic Exclusion Zone,” according to Pentagon spokesperson Col. Rob Manning. “We are working with our interagency partners on a more detailed assessment of the launch.”

“The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) determined the missile launch from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America, our territories or our allies,” Manning added.

This is coming out of Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post. I was willing to give the first accuser the benefit of the doubt, even though she’s an extremist, Tea Bag, pro-Donald loon with long ties to Sean Hannity, Roy Moore’s most unhinged defender in the whole Murdoch empire; but no longer.
I truly believe this whole narrative to be a poisonous, Republican dirty trick, designed to destroy the career of one of the most vocal, effective Democrats in the Senate, and doing it in such a way that the obedient press is rushing to cover the latest “Democratic” scandal.
None of the headlines in the daily news are about the grotesque, democracy-destroying tax bill these dark money fascist Republicans are going to shove through next week—-so mission accomplished.
The country cannot be saved. The same press that played “both sides” for twenty five years, giving us first the Newt Gingrich ascendancy, then the stolen Bush presidency of 2000, then the ceaseless attacks on Obama for “failing” in bipartisan outreach to the vile fascist apparatchik Mitch McConnell, and then last year’s unhinged anti-Hillary coverage, is now shoveling on one lying, slimy, Republican attack after another on an effective progressive, destroying his career (the way they once destroyed ACORN with doctored tapes, Big Lies, and Democratic panic).
The consequence: our country is in disarray, the madman in the White House is refusing to send disaster funds to Democratic states as an autocratic act of punishment for having voted against him, our life-saving environmental regulations have been rolled back, our courts are being packed with malignant little madmen working for the corporate interests, and a tax bill designed to destroy everything from our public education system to a free, fair, open press to the right of ordinary American workers to organize.
Brace yourselves. It’ll be a lot worse by this time next year, when the Republicans will have stolen the 2018 mid-terms, no doubt with a great deal of civil violence to provide a smokescreen (in some cases, with real smoke).

I certainly hope Jimmy Carter and a team of poll-watchers from the United Nations make it down to Alabama next month for this election. It’s one of the leakiest, most corrupt voting systems in a country with a whole lot of leaky, corrupt voting systems. These people are laying track to declare Moore the winner whether or not he actually wins (this is something Republicans have become quite skilled at pulling off since that little scuffle down in Florida in 2000).

The Party Intellectuals of the early Church were determined to create a powerful, psychologically-compelling rationale for the great and unchallengable power of princes—a direct chain from God to monarch, the seedbed of the notion of the Divine Right. Nearly two thousand years ago, the insight that faith could be organized into a foundation for vast political power was just as acute as it is today.
At first the princes thus empowered were princes of the Church: later, they would become secular princes given the imprimatur of the Church, and working in close alliance with the Church—-a pattern that continues to the present moment, as the Protestant and Catholic right make common cause with reactionary right political parties around the world.
Today, as the billionaires finish the work of destroying the American democracy—burning it to ashes and doing whatever it takes to make sure nobody can ever build a democracy on this poisoned soil again—-they too are resorting to this old trick.
Men like Charles Koch and Robert Mercer and Peter Thiel and the rest of the vampire class of billionaires—some of them “religious,” others quite cynically atheist—- are allying with the worst, most autocratic and reactionary elements of the Church, both Protestant and Catholic, granting great and growing power over ordinary civic life to theocratic madmen.
They are making this bargain in exchange for votes to cut taxes and regulations on billionaires, to promote hereditary wealth and power, to eliminate public education, to shatter equality before the law, to reduce ordinary people to a peasantry that, like its forebears, will learn to accept wretched, terrified, and powerless lives in this world on the promise of golden thrones and the affection of a patriarchal deity in the next.

It becomes increasingly obvious that these allegations against Franken and others (along with the resurrection of all the old Clinton shit) weren’t merely a Roger Stone-style dirty trick designed to drown out real and serious allegations against the white supremacist and fascist Roy Moore, who is about to be elected to the US Senate: they were also designed to blot up news time so that any risk would be considerably lessened that some journalist somewhere might disobey orders from Corporate, and talk about the appalling Republican legislation.
Not that Chuck Todd would ever have disobeyed orders from Corporate. Nancy Pelosi should have understood that he wasn’t inviting her on to talk about the tax cut—-he was inviting her on to blow smoke with allegations of Democratic “sex scandals,” to help avoid serious conversation about serious issues, to help guarantee the election of Roy Moore, to help guarantee the passage of that anti-democracy beast of a tax bill that will benefit the executives at NBC Universal/Comcast, the network that—-lest we forget—–first introduced the nation to a gussied-up, “executive” image makeover for the Republicans’ beamish boy, the mad fascist Donald Trump, whose sticky, smelly, stubby little hands are big enough to hold a signing pen and sign this travesty into law.
Chuck Todd is a treasonous little swine—-assuming, that is, that we regard him as a citizen of the United States, rather than merely a propagandist for NBC Universal/Comcast (in the latter case, all right then: well done, Chuck, mission accomplished): but then we knew that.

Charles Koch and his dark money junta plan to have the constitution rewritten–something they will be able to do when a few more Republican states hop on board and agree to a constitutional convention.
In addition to repealing the 17th amendment, thus returning the selection of US Senators to corrupt, Republican-owned state legislatures–which will mean that no matter what the people want, there can never again be a Democratic majority in the US Senate—-and in addition to passing a national balanced budget amendment that will make it impossible in perpetuity—permanently, forever—to sustain a safety net (Medicare, Social Security, etc.), they will surely give a sop to the religious right without which they never could have hoped to seize power in this country, and without which they could never have brought down the American democracy they hate so much.
“Religious freedom” amendments will be added to this Republican mockery of a constitution, compelling Christian prayer in public settings, and perhaps in the privacy of the home as well.
The constitution won’t be binding on the rich—who will there be to enforce laws against the rich, once the Republicans have finished stripping away our democracy?—-but it will be binding on every other poor, hopeless soul in this country.

This is what the hit on Franken was all about: and so-called journalists like Chuck Todd (whose employers, NBC Universal/Comcast, very much want this beast of a tax bill to be signed into law) have played it to the hilt, lashing out at Franken and other Democrats while reducing Moore and Mad Donald to mere footnotes, designed to highlight Democratic sins.
As always, “both sides” works exclusively to the benefit of reactionary Republicans. God help us all.

  • Ninja0980

The day wasn’t wasted. It was another day when the Beltway press got to refuse to talk about the Republican tax bill that is going to erode our democracy as surely as if someone had poured lye all over it (hint: their corporate bosses all want the Republican tax bill to be signed into law).
Kind of like last week, when, in order to avoid talking about Roy Moore, they played up the smear of Al Franken, a classic, vitriolic, diabolically effective smear, straight out of the Republican character assassination machine.
There are no wasted days, once you understand that this is all about shredding constitutional norms, violating the principles of democratic governance, and ushering in an era of authoritarian, brutal, fascist rule.
And just as last year—when the press helped place Donald and his Republican hatchet-men in office by playing Republican mantras and Republican distractions 24/7 (Hillary! The Clinton Foundation! Benghazi! She Coughed! She wore a pants suit! Her voice!)—the national political press is, whether wittingly or unwittingly, a co-conspirator in bringing Charles Koch’s classic fascism, his dark money assault on democracy, to its final triumph.

When, nearly half a century ago, Charles Koch, the petulant old fossil fuel heir, Ayn Rand fan, and octogenarian Bond villain, first began his project to take down democracy through a delicious combination of bribery and propaganda, buying up judges, journalists, and members of Congress by the job lot and pouring money into “think tanks,” he also spawned a subsidiary industry in political grift which has been immensely profitable to several generations now.
O’Keefe is merely the latest in a long line of grifting hucksters that has given us such luminaries as John Lott, Michelle Malkin, Fred Barnes, Jonah Goldberg, Ann Coulter, Stephen Moore, et al–every one of whom has recognized, at a critical point in their young lives, that you can make a handsome living by spitting out ugly words designed to demolish democracy: the more reckless and shameless, the more profitable.
Nothing makes old Charles’ liver-spotted hands reach for the checkbook faster than some soul-dead provocateur who’s willing to say and do literally anything that might hasten the day when ‘pure capitalism’ is restored and Charles can take his rightful place as the Master of the Master Race, the undisputed king of the whole goddamned universe.

It’s going to pass because Charles Koch wants it to pass. It’s going to pass because he owns the Republican majorities in the House and Senate, body and what passes for soul.
It’s going to pass because the owners of ABC, CNN, CBS, NBC, Fox, and the New York Times want it to pass.
It’s going to pass because a handful of incredibly rich, arrogant, unhinged men—-a cult of billionaires, in effect—-has decided that democracy is, in Peter Thiel’s dangerous phrase, “the enemy of capitalism,” and must be ended. Hitler’s attempt 80 years ago was a failure: this time, they’re determined to succeed.
It’s also going to pass because in the two weeks leading up to the vote, Chuck Todd and others were too busy destroying the Senate career of a fighting progressive, Al Franken, on the basis of flimsy, cynically-timed accusations from the Republican slime machine (and, at the same time, reviving the Senate prospects of an anti-constitutional, anti-democratic, murderous little Christianist pedophile named Roy Moore) to give serious national coverage to the implications of this beast of a bill.

While I’m completely mortified by the idea of Nuclear NK, I can’t help but be amused by the U.S. getting to keep theirs while telling everyone else they can’t have any.

    • Gianni

Not everyone else. Besides, this has been taken up in the UN. We are not alone in this claim. It’s a world-wide concern.

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

You miss my point. It’s becoming a little tiring hearing the U.S. pontificate, especially with Trump at the helm. Again, it’s a scary prospect, but the U.S. is no angel on the world stage and thus it’s a bit rich to see this finger wagging.

        • Gianni

I’m pretty sure that the US has never claimed to be an angel on the world stage. Plus, Trump is a finger wagger among many other things. So don’t pay so much attention to him. We certainly try not to, although it’s pretty tough at times. Besides, NK isn’t threatening Canada on a continual basis, which the US, under smarter presidents, has long endured. Problem now it that they have become a very real threat with the capacity to actually make good on their belligerence. We don’t usually take kindly to threats and, heaven forbid, Li’l Kim actually does lob one of those and hit US territory or an ally. All bets off, then.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

“I’m pretty sure that the US has never claimed to be an angel on the world stage.” — Seriously? Then you have not been paying attention. At every turn, all we here is how America is the champion of freedom and liberty etc, etc….all while propping up dictators and thugs.

“Plus, Trump is a finger wagger among many other things. So don’t pay so much attention to him. We certainly try not to, although it’s pretty tough at times.” — I cannot argue with that.

“Besides, NK isn’t threatening Canada on a continual basis, which the US, under smarter presidents, has long endured.” — True, perhaps you should ask why that is, the answer might surprise.

“Problem now it that they have become a very real threat with the capacity to actually make good on their belligerence.” — Again, ask yourself why that is.

“We don’t usually take kindly to threats…” — but you sure do love making them, both overtly and covertly. Pot, Kettle Black as it were.

“…and, heaven forbid, Li’l Kim actually does lob one of those and hit US territory or an ally. All bets off, then.” — and that’s precisely why you shouldn’t worry as much as Fox and others are telling you to be. Kim is a sociopath, just like Trump, but unlike Trump, he’s not unaware of the real world.
