AUSTRALIA: Senate Approves Marriage Bill In Lopsided Vote, Easy Passage Expected In House Next Week

The Guardian reports:

The Australian Senate has passed a same-sex marriage bill, the first marriage equality bill to pass either house of federal parliament, succeeding where more than 20 previous attempts have failed.

Two weeks after the announcement that 61.6% of those who participated in the unprecedented national postal survey voted in favour of same-sex marriage, the Senate passed the cross-party bill unamended.

The bill will now go to the House of Representatives, where it is expected to pass easily next week, fulfilling the Turnbull government’s promise to facilitate a marriage equality bill in the event of a yes vote and legislate the historic social reform before Christmas.

The cross-party bill passed the Senate 43 votes to 12 as almost all Labor senators, the Greens, the Nick Xenophon Team, Derryn Hinch and members of the ruling Liberal-National Coalition voted in favour.

The guest list hasn’t been set for the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, but a number of things could stand in the way of President Donald Trump getting an invite.

But a former U.S. president might make the list, due to his friendship with the young British royal: Barack Obama and his wife, former first lady Michelle, who appear to have amiable relations with Harry and his elder brother and future king, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge.

        • Reality.Bites

          Was his father Soda?

          • 2guysnamedjoe

            No. Buttah.

        • That’s not an uncommon term for east coast folks to use, especially those raised low-class. Remember, Donald is a Queens boy–practically every word they have to describe an ethnicity is in some way derogatory. “Pollacks” “Micks” “Krauts” — I’ve heard them all. Usually from my own father.

          • Oscarlating Wildely

I’ve not heard that particular insult on the East Coast (and Scotch is inherently never an insult; American whiskey is) but note: this is his mother. I mean, sure she’s a hag and all that but he could at least fake it.

          • “Scotch” says “I’m too lazy to bother pronouncing two syllables, so you get just one. And I get to bark it at you.”

It’s heard more commonly in Appalachia.

          • Oscarlating Wildely

Got it! Considering covfefe et al, “Scotch” is comparatively the work of the Bard.

          • Yeah, it’s not that-that bad. First time I ever heard it was when some relative on my father’s side of the family referred to my mother’s as “Scotch-Irish.” This was western PA. I didn’t even learn the term Scottish until like junior high.

Turns out there’s a touch of Scottish on mom’s side, but it’s mostly (like 90%) Irish. Gingers mainly, not so much the Black Irish, but not full-on ginger — some freckles & a tendency toward auburn hair on that side.

          • Refugay

            I’ve got Pringles in me.

        • Robincho

It’s so odd. We don’t refer to the British as “Britch”…

          • AmeriCanadian

            Maybe you don’t.

        • 2guysnamedjoe

“Scotch” is how my grandma’s nationality was listed on her 1906 US arrival record. Until the 1970s or so, I thought “Scottish” was an affectation, like “Avenue of the Americas” versus 6th Avenue. Correct, maybe, but real people don’t say it.

    • Lazycrockett

Is this going to be another balls to the walls affair? Cause it seems kinda odd for a a guy who is now 5th and soon to be 6th in the line of succession.

      • SoCalGal20

Everybody loves a good celebration and party. But, I don’t think you’re going to see a bunch of government representatives from around the world attending. I would expect it would be more just notable people that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are friends with that will attend. Harry is friends with the Obamas, though so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were there. I’m sure it will be the big social event of the season, though.

        • Lazycrockett

It just seems like its being pushed as a Chuck and Di, or Will and Kate extravagance and while I adore the Hot Ginger his standing just doesn’t warrant the spending by the British taxpayers.

          • SoCalGal20

I don’t know. I haven’t really paid much attention to be honest. He is a royal so of course there’s going to be some pomp and extravagance but I doubt it’s going to be a wedding to rival his parent’s or William and Kate’s. Then again when Kate’s sister recently got married it was like a big to do.

          • There will be a bidding war for the wedding photos that should be more than enough to pay for an over the top wedding, maybe even broadcast rights.

          • ChrisMorley

            Fret Not:
The royal spokesperson ‘said the royal family would pay for the wedding, including the church service, the music, the flowers and the reception.
Wider security costs, policing and public order arrangements will be covered by the public purse, however. The palace declined to comment on whether the bride’s parents would contribute.’ https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/nov/28/prince-harry-to-marry-meghan-markle-at-windsor-castle-in-may

It’s not officially being pushed by Britain as a major public royal event. There will be no public holiday. The royals know very well he’s not in line for the throne; it would be held at St Paul’s Cathedral or Westminster Abbey instead of the Chapel Royal, Windsor Castle, if he was.
The Queen was taught a tough lesson on the limits of public generosity following the devasting fire at Windsor Castle in her annus horribilis of 1992. She ended up meeting much of the £36.5M restoration costs.
‘On 29 April 1993 it was announced that 70% of the cost would be met by charging the public for entry into the castle precincts and £8 for admission to Buckingham Palace for the next five years. The Queen contributed £2 million of her own money, and she agreed to start paying income tax from 1993 onwards, making her the first British monarch to do so since the 1930s.’ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Windsor_Castle_fire

          • Dazzer

All the major costs of the wedding are being met by the Royal Family. The cost to taxpayers will depend on the amount of policing and security required at the event.

It’s not going to be a massive drain on the public purse.

        • Robincho

And if the Obamas were, in fact, on the guest list and did, in fact, attend, that might deliver the blow that’d “Scotch” him.
          There’s always hope…

    • ChrisMorley

The biggest clue that tRump won’t be invited is not the security concerns about policing inevitable massive anti-tRump protests, but that this is being treated as a family wedding, held in the Queen’s own Chapel Royal at Windsor Castle, one of her principal residences, and the royals are paying for it. S/He who pays the piper, picks the tune / guests.

I had a skirmish with a guy on another website. The question was whether you as an Aussie would vote in yes or no in the plebescite. This guy responded that he would vote no because he is gay, but he is in ex-gay therapy and knows that homosexuality is “not God’s way.”

I said fine, but why is that an excuse to deny happiness to gays who don’t believe that? He just said that homosexuality is wrong, and no one should be gay, and gay marriage is just wrong.

I finished by telling him he is on a collision course with himself. He is gay, and that won’t change, but he is trying to change something that can’t be changed, and eventually he will understand that, and it will lead to a big problem for himself. He stuck to his guns that he will eventually be cured of it.

So now he’ll be surrounded by happy gays getting married, and he will be stuck trying to de-gay himself.

Constitutionally speaking, it world be up to the Congress to sue the Administration into implementing the sanctions. Other options include withholding money (although that seems to be just fine with Tillerson) or holding Trump’s nominees hostage until he complies with the law.

I’m not sure Congress has the balls to do any of those things (although a Dem Senator could put a hold on a nominee).

    • Wisconsin. Pennsylvania. Michican. All three states showed severe voting irregularities. And there’s also a good chance Ohio, North Carolina, and Florida were also fucked with.

But yeah, Wisconsin is and has been one of the worst in terms of outright ballot fraud by the Republicans running the state.

      • zhera

So what exactly happened with the recounts or whatever that people donated to?

        • Nearly all of those asking for money (esp the Steins) were just scams.

You don’t need money for recounts. Just the vote total being close enough to demand it based on the laws of the particular state or locale.

Trouble is, this time it looks like votes were fucked with at the machine level or during tabulation. Many of the states affected don’t use paper ballots, so even a recount is like, “Yup, despite Trump being down by 5 in the polls, he won by 0.3. Number’s right here in the computer.”

Meanwhile, Trump will assume that they’re just going to be colluding with North Korea and therefore shouldn’t have been here anyway.

O/T but will be doing the good friend thing this Saturday and taking my one buddy out to dinner.
As much as he puts on a brave face, I know this day still hurts him eight years later because it was finally the day he said goodbye to his “parents” for good after reading their facebook page where they said the most awful vile things about the failure of our legislature to pass marriage equality.
One thing to have your parents throw you out of the house (bad enough.)
Quite another to see where they are willing to make public for all the world to see what utter contempt they have for you and anyone one else who is LGBT, and all because of some crap written 2,000 years ago.
They haven’t spoken since and as far as they concerned, they are a childless couple (he was their only son.)
I will never, EVER understand how you can do that to your own flesh and blood.
End of rant, I feel better now.

    • Sam_Handwich

well have a joyous and yummy din din!

don’t mourn the loss, celebrate the liberation

    • Max_1

You’re not “doing the good friend thing”…
      … You’re “being a good friend”.

My experience is similar to your friend.
… It’s good to know that someone’s got your back.

Like Sam said, eat and have fun!

    • Robincho

Take him to Bix, and hang the expense. What he lacks in parents he MORE than gains with your friendship…

    • Ben in Oakland

As I said to my parents song 40 years ago, “it’s clear to me that your beliefs about homosexuality and what it means to be gay are far more important to you than your relationship with your son, and certainly more important than things like truth, fairness and love. And isn’t that too sad?”

I eventually gave up on them. And it really wasn’t that difficult. ANd I never looked back, though I did see my mother not long before she died. And I realized that javin* divested myself of them was actually a good thing. My brothers never did, and the once that didn’t commit suicide is still drowning in toxicity.

I’ve been blessed my entire life with extra parents. My current “mom” is 96.

I would suggest your friend write a letter to them, telling them exactly what he feels. Not damning them, not shaming them, but just telling them. If he’s smart, he’ll also tell them the door is open. They may never show up, and if they are toxic enough, that might be a good idea. And he will know he did what he could, and that maybe their absence in his life is a good idea.

    • You’re a good person.

When I finally came to terms with myself and what I really wanted and was attracted to, I told my family. Only one of my brothers took it well. Everyone else began shunning me…and my father embarked on a decade-long campaign of unhinged but very credible death threats. He even began stalking me. It didn’t end until he died in 2006.

Know what saw me through those rough times? FRIENDS. People who accepted me for myself and who didn’t demand I conform to their expectations or live my life according to their demands.

The best of my friends would invite me to be with them and their families, especially during the holidays, and one of my best moments ever was when my wife’s mother (now departed) said to me, “You’re one of us now. You can’t get away.” Because she knew how much I needed to feel like I belonged.

Be what your friend needs, Ninja. Just being there for him is all he really needs, and for him to belong.

    • FAEN

Dude, you’re a good man and your friend is lucky to have you.

Tell Ben I don’t love him anymore. Tell him, Steve, that I love you now.

        • Ben in Oakland

I don’t care. Ryan apologized, and all is well. Grant is all yours, along with The Jared. Skinny smooth boys. My Ryan is all man, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

My husband thinks Ryan and I are just friends. He’s constantly telling us we’re so close he thinks we should get a room. But he’s glad he can trust me totally, and he really likes Ryan.

So have your grant and your The Jared.

          • another_steve

Ryan is playing with you. He knows that Grant has rejected you and he now considers you easy pickings.

The poor boy. Having to sink his precious bodily fluids into that quivering mass of impotency. I hope he will go to you afterwards for consolation and restoration.

Yup. I’ve had gay people tell me I should vote for the UK Conservatives as they were in power when marriage equality was passed. They don’t seem to like it when I point out the majority of Conservative MPs voted against it.

We have our own log cabin republicans who only care about their tax cuts.

      • BobSF_94117

I would not recommend anyone vote Tory, but it must be said that the leadership of the Conservatives made an enormous difference, I’ll credit them with looking ahead and realizing they had been wrong. Not something I’ll ever say about the Aussie Liberal Party.

What I love most about that piece is the subtle use of the flute. I played the flute and know what it’s capable of.

      So too, the masters.

They knew the potential over-powering influence of the instrument.

  • David Walker

Mr. Bear always has the best music, but I want to chip in with this, from Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances. This is the fourth dance in the second suite, and it’s one of the most joyous works I know. The music is wonderful and Ottorino knew how to work an orchestra.
    To you, Australia, with love.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOBFd6dZqjQ

    • Mikey

I love the Ancient Airs and Dances, though the music isn’t by Respighi (or as my mother calls him Oto-rhyno Miss Piggy), the orchestrations are his. The music is, quite literally, ancient airs and dances (most originally for lute or harpsichord).

Of his own original music, this is my favourite and quite as joyful and rambunctious. It’s the finale from “Feste Romane” (Roman Festivals), and quite worth listening to all the way through to its absolutely orgasmic final cadence.

      https://youtu.be/bIMAicXgZP4

    • Ernest Endevor

You can hear Copland there quite vividly. I seem to think that he was the arranger most admired by Ellington. Or was it Ferdy Grofé, who orchestrated Rhapsody in blue, who so admired Respighi??

      • David Walker

I don’t know, although I’d be inclined toward Grofe. Back when I did pen and paper manuscripts while on-air, a few people thought it was remarkable that I could do that while music played. I said the hard part for me was creating the arrangement, which I had to do in quiet; simply inking in a manuscript was no problem. The folks who blow me away are those who arrange or, even worse/better, compose with music playing. Grofe wrote his Grand Canyon Suite backstage as the Paul Whiteman Orchestra played his arrangements. And then there was Leroy Anderson who said he couldn’t compose in silence, that he always worked with the radio on.

        • Ernest Endevor

Then there was Mozart, for God’s sake, writing Magic Flute at a table in a beer garden outside the theatre. But he seemed to always have people around when he composed. I can’t do online banking if there’s any music playing. I know that Grofe sounds more likely but I have a dim memory of my father telling me that. Or maybe it was that Grofe was Ellington’s fave arranger. My father played with Ellington briefly and then was part of the Jazz Orchestra, he was also an asshole of giant proportions. And of course, Ellington was a very surprising and, in my opinion, a very underestimated men.

Uh oh. The hubby is watching the movie of Brigadoon. That’s not going to end well.

          • David Walker

I was hardly ever allowed to play Ellington’s “serious” music at the station, except, of course, during black history month. Pissed me off greatly…and for the reasons you state: surprising in his music and ideas and very, pathetically underrated.

We don’t care for “Brigadoon”? One of my happier nights at the movies was at a revival theater that played both “Brigadoon” and the MGM production of “Show Boat.” Of course, watching them in the balcony with a fellow show addicted date may have had something to do with it. No, we didn’t sing along. Really loudly, anyway.

          • Ernest Endevor

The Ellington/Strayhorn work is an important part of the American Songbook, it seems to me. I saw the band a lot when I was a kid. Brigadoon‘s okay. But the movie is a horror-show. So is Show Boat but I forgive you. Sometimes even the most expert gay can get it wrong. You’ve seen the earlier James Whale version, I take it? (No, my foot isn’t tapping) Also of note is the Show Boat sequence of Till the Clouds Roll By. The musical staging is by the great Robert Alton who is repeating his staging for the show on stage.

And just because there can never be too much charm in the world here’s Van Johnson from that movie dancing with some shiksa.

            https://youtu.be/Szati9fzGQk

          • David Walker

Oh, god yes I’ve seen the James Whale film. It’s worlds away a better performance, but I have always had a soft spot (in my head?) for MGM Musical kitsch. Except “On the Town.”

As for god-awful movies, I think the worst I’ve seen (aside from Lucy’s “Mame”) was “Our Town.” I watched it — ONCE — because Copland wrote the score, I liked the excerpts that had been recorded, and I wanted to see how they went with the movie. I assumed the movie was going to be all right, and it was. I’d seen better live productions, but it was OK. And then **Spoiler Alert** the end drew nigh and Emily came back to life thanks to George’s unrelenting love. I couldn’t believe it. I found myself screaming at the TV. Jack, who wasn’t watching, wondered what was wrong. It turns out the producer, Sol Lesser (honest), decided American film audiences wouldn’t come if the movie had such a downer ending. Apparently underestimating the intelligence of the American public has been around a long, long time. Thornton Wilder gets first credit for the screenplay, but there are two others. Besides, just because one buys the rights to a play doesn’t mean you can’t fuck it up however one wishes. (I repeat: Lucy’s “Mame.”)

          • Ernest Endevor

LOL. Try the movie of Glass Menagerie (whoever thought Gertrude Lawrence was a good idea?) where Amanda and Laura wait on the fire escape for a new Gentleman Caller. Or Wuthering Heights or… but that way madness lies. I have a soft spot for Lucy’s Mame and I don’t care who knows it.

Irene Dune dancing to <Fish Gotta Swim? Take me home.

Perhaps you haven’t seen this? Alexander’s Ragtime Band?

          • David Walker

If Tyrone Power is in it, I’ve probably seen it. With tissues, so I don’t visibly drool. One of my favorite movies is “Witness for the Prosecution,” not so much for the plot as for the cast. Even though I know how it ends, I still trot it out to watch, just for the (over)acting. Simply seeing Elsa Lanchester and Charles Laughton go at it warms my cockles.
            And since you mention it…Revel.
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPR3X9AjhaU

          • Ernest Endevor

Don’t you love it when she starts to shuffle?

I don’t care for the oeuvre of A Christie and I’ve been in four of her ‘plays’! Dietrich as a cockney? Cor lumme, gov! But yes, Laughton is admirable. I’m assuming you’ve seen him in Hobson’s Choice? I don’t know if that movie is known here. David Lean’s superb adaptation of the play and perhaps Laughton’s greatest perf.

ARB is my favorite musical film. An all Berlin score and magnificent production. Henry King’s the director and the first 30 mins are peerless. Here’s the first number.

OT: This man’s basic thesis strangely reminds me of Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy for some reason.

    https://www.newyorker.com/culture/persons-of-interest/the-case-for-not-being-born

“David Benatar may be the world’s most pessimistic philosopher. An “anti-natalist,” he believes that life is so bad, so painful, that human beings should stop having children for reasons of compassion. “While good people go to great lengths to spare their children from suffering, few of them seem to notice that the one (and only) guaranteed way to prevent all the suffering of their children is not to bring those children into existence in the first place,” he writes, in a 2006 book
called “Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming Into Existence.”

In Benatar’s view, reproducing is intrinsically cruel and irresponsible—not just because a horrible fate can befall anyone, but because life itself is “permeated by badness.” In part for this reason, he thinks that the world would be a better place if sentient life disappeared altogether.:

    • AJ Drew

Not sure I disagree, especially when it comes to humans:

“The world produces more than 3.5 million tons of garbage a day — and that figure is growing.”

      https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2017/world/global-waste/

    • BeaverTales

In Benatar’s view, reproducing is intrinsically cruel and irresponsible

I love kids, but reached the same conclusion a few years ago.

Our species is intrinsically flawed by a behavioral propensity for greed, violence, manipulation and cruelty…If we could eliminate those genes from the gene pool, perhaps there is a chance for long term survival. The anthropocene could render earth uninhabitable for millions of years if we decide to use nukes…and even if we don’t, the odds of a natural global disaster doing it instead make sustainable space travel our only opportunity for survival as a species.

      Thanks for the link.

There was also a funeral of a fairly prominent former Labor senator and a couple of Labor senators were absent for that. Another Labor senator was at a hospital where her daughter was undergoing surgery.

      Ya gotta love Wikipedia.

I was curious, too, and found the vote breakdown:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_Amendment_(Definition_and_Religious_Freedoms)_Bill_2017#Passage_in_Senate

      Look for “Third Reading”

I was surprised that the most abstentions came from Labour. It appears that a higher percentage of Liberal (conservative in UpsideDownistan) senators voted in favor (ok, favour) than Labour ones did.

Although it has an asterisk for being non-binding, Australia joins Maryland, Maine, Washington, and Ireland as voting for SSM at the ballot box – in fact, I daresay these are the only cases of a majority approving rights of a minority at the ballot box, am I wrong? Meanwhile, here’s some music.

When Minnesota voters (also in 2012) refused to pass their “one man – one woman” marriage restriction, I count that as “voting for” marriage equality at the ballot box – and marriage equality was passed (by their legislature) during the next legislative session, same as it was in Aus.

Thank you for the reminder – it was more significant in its direct impact than Australia’s.

Finally – the final member of the old Commonwealth has aligned with UK, Canada, NZ in becoming a modern secular liberal society.

Now, I hope, it will just become part of day to day life, with hardly anyone giving a damn.

    Good news in Advent
