CANADA: Government Earmarks $100M To Compensate Military And Federal Employees Ejected For Being Gay

CBC news reports:

The Trudeau government has earmarked more than $100 million to compensate members of the military and other federal agencies whose careers were sidelined or ended due to their sexual orientation, The Canadian Press has learned.

The money will be paid out as part of a class-action lawsuit settlement to employees who were investigated, sanctioned and sometimes fired as part of the so-called gay purge.

An agreement in principle in the court action emerged Friday, just days before the government delivers a sweeping apology for discrimination against members of the LGBTQ community.

Details of the agreement must still be worked out by the parties and approved by the Federal Court, but it’s expected that several thousand people will be eligible for the financial compensation.

Trudeau will issue a formal apology before Parliament tomorrow. In addition, Trudeau’s administration will introduce a measure to expunge the records of anybody convicted for homosexual acts by military or civilian courts. (Tipped by JMG reader David)

    I miss real leadership

    • Reality.Bites

You know from a Canadian perspective, Justin Trudeau is a very strong retail politician, who is really good at being a “look how incredibly beautiful rich people and their kids are just like we would be if we were incredibly beautiful and rich” type of celebrity like Neil Patrick Harris.

But I wouldn’t call him more of a leader than others. His policies are very carefully calculated to appeal to the voters he needs. Our system is much more rep-by-pop and far less gerrymandered than yours. imagine if you could win the presidency of the USA by appealing to the voters of the New York City and LA and San Francisco metropolitan areas plus New England.

His embrace of LGBTQ rights isn’t really leadership. It’s signalling to those people – most of whom living in those cities and suburbs aren’t white and aren’t born in Canada or their parents weren’t – that minorities are welcomed and protected in Canada, even LGBTQ. And of course all of them have LGTBQ people coming out and possibly challenging their beliefs.

It’s exactly the same thing all the Canadian banks do.

This is the main branch at the head office of BMO, a large Canadian bank owning the regional BMO Harris bank in Illinois.

This display was up from about a week before Pride till Labour Day. And their customer greeter and helper is Enza Anderson, a well known Trans activist/celebrity

        Oh, you mean like Heaven?

      • prixator

Two or three years ago, in late June, I was walking near King & Bay and all the bank HQs had LGBTQ flags of some sort displayed, but CIBC had a blue, pink and white striped flag flying.

At the time, I didn’t know what that signified. I thought that it, perhaps, was the bisexual flag. I googled it when I got home and it was a transgender flag.

I worked at CIBC for a few years, so it was kind of astonishing to me.

    • Strepsi

Justin is faltering in weird ways here at home trying to ride the middle rail (he has a major party to the left AND the right of him), such as signing the Paris climate accord, then approving a pipeline.

But I really don’t get why he seems to be screwing the pooch on the Indian Affairs and Truth and Reconciliation files so badly – we in Canada have been TERRIBLE to our First Nations (we haven’t even signed the U.N. declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples because we know we fail it in every way) and he promised to be different.

      • Oscarlating Wildely

“But I really don’t get why he seems to be screwing the pooch on the Indian Affairs and Truth and Reconciliation files so badly”

If he is screwing the pooch on the matter, our government in the States is fucking the entire kennel and a cattery or two.

Not crazy about it either but prefer that to getting a hefty bill from Dr’s or hospitals + a monthly Health Insurance bill. Call it a trade off but gotta tell you after 3 heart attacks, colon cancer surgery, brain surgery, multiple tests etc. my family is grateful for not getting a bill for any of those services. We’d have been bankrupt for sure if living in the US.

No, I’m not familiar with that series but I live in the downtown area and very regularly encounter film and TV shoots. It’s the oldest part of Toronto, so there are many century-old buildings and sites that are in demand for shoots.

Zach Efron is another one who disappointed as he grew. There’s just something “off” about him now. I think his body’s too big for his head. Chris Gorham (Covert Affairs) is definitely one of those!

She was in favour of Quebec’s so-called “Secular Charter” meant to force Muslim women out of covering their faces. Disgusting racism of the same ilk as Republicans – but interestingly in Quebec you have to package bigotry as purely secular, such is the dislike of religion.

They model themselves on France, which attempts the same secular racist tricks.

As a gay man, I’m glad to hear this. As a black man, I feel like a member of a permanent underclass. Gay people (and First Nations, Japanese immigrants, Jews, etc.) who fought and died for our country are lucky they aren’t treated like black people.

Unfortunately, mentioning reparations is verboten for African Americans and African Canadians. We’re the only ethnic group that isn’t allowed to complain about our treatment by our own government. We aren’t even allowed to kneel in protest without our patriotism being called into question.
