AUSTRALIA: Tennis Legend Margaret Court Calls On Politicians To Ignore Result Of Marriage Survey

The West Australian reports:

Margaret Court says she is inclined to end her 50-year association with the Liberals over same-sex marriage, believing the major parties are presiding over the nation’s moral decline.

The tennis legend and pastor, who is married to former WA Liberal president Barry Court, urged politicians who were personally opposed to same-sex marriage to follow their conscience rather than the national survey result.

“We look at what’s there now and they are not listening to the conservatives or what a lot of people would like,” she said. “They are not allowing you to speak. I don’t think I want to be with either party.”

Earlier this year Court compared gay people to Hitler and declared that if same-sex marriage becomes law, Australia will stop celebrating Christmas and Easter.

  • Gustav2

Of course, Christianists don’t like democracy.

  • Tawreos

If the “No” vote had won you would be damning any politician to hell for daring to follow their own conscience. Oh, and what part of a national vote prevented the politicians opposed to gay marriage from not having their say. 1 person 1 vote, they got to speak and were shouted down. Go to hell you old bitch.

    • marshlc

Yeah, I loved that “they’re not listening!” bit. They listened, you bitch, and decided against you.

  • jayjonson

NOW she is in favor of a “conscience vote” after campaigning to stop such a vote, which would have resulted in marriage equality months ago and without the expenditure of 120 million dollars!

Rename the damned tennis court in Sydney [Sorry, Melbourne] for Ron Laver [Yvonne Gooagong] or someone else who is not bigoted. [Thanks to Bluto and FAEN below.]

    • Tawreos

Better yet, rename the stadium The Marriage Equality Stadium as an extra little fuck you to her.

      • Todd20036

How about, the “Fuck You Court Stadium”?

      • glass

I was going to suggest the “Rainbow Stadium”. That way it covers every gay thing you can imagine.

      • JCF

“Marriage Equality Stadium: Gays Marry Free!” *

        * Nah, equality: ALL marriages free. 🙂

    • Bluto

      Melbourne, but your point stands.

    • FAEN

So there are two arenas and one is already named after Laver but I get your point. I hope they take Court’s name down and go with Goolagong-she’s far more deserving and is NOT a bigot!

      • Gerry Fisher

        LOVED Goolagong’s game.

        • FAEN

          Right? So fluid and graceful.

        • Gerry Fisher

I was a big Chris Evert fan at the time, and I remember their matches. This closeted-to-myself Irish Catholic gay boy was drawn to Evert’s “keep a lid on it, keep it under control” steely approach. It was clue #153 that I was gay…it would take more years for me to give in and “figure it out.”

          • FAEN

I grew to love Chris the more I got to know her but for a long time she was ‘the enemy’ since I was and always will be a Navratilova fan lol.

Did you watch the amazing documentary on Chris and Martina ESPN produced? Part of the 30 for 30 series. SOO worth watching!

          • Gerry Fisher

I sure did. I was a huge fan of Chris and grew to love Martina. (I think Chris’ path of moving away from being a perfectionist ice princess into a warmer, more fun-loving person mirrored my own journey.) I was a huge fan of Larry Bird’s Boston Celtics and grew to love Magic’s LA Lakers. And, in sports history, those are two of the greatest rivalries of all time. I heard a comparison of “the number of times they competed” between Ali and Frazier and Chris and Martina…the women’s numbers of matches are *staggering* in comparison. They played one hundred, a few hundred times? Across more than a decade?

          • FAEN

Right? So many matches over so many years. One of the greatest rivalries in sports history period.

          • olandp

I loved the Chris/Martina skit on SNL. Every new profession Chris tried, Martina also entered to compete with her.

SNL used to be really funny.

          • FAEN

            LOL-I remember that too.

          • Dazzer

A friend of mine was Chris Evert’s PA at Wimbledon (she was actually the first-ever PA appointed to a woman tennis player by a sports agency).

She said that Evert was demanding (my friend didn’t object to this – she felt a world class athlete ought to be demanding), but was an all-round great person.

          • FAEN

We’re all glad you did 😉

          • Zollergasse

I was 12 when I saw Martina first won Wimbledon on TV in 1978. She went on to become arguably the greatest player ever. Always loved her and always will – even though these days I don’t have much interest in tennis anymore.

    • FAEN

Btw-Rod Laver is one of the greatest ever but let’s not forget when tennis started to boom after 1968(open tennis)the men including Laver pushed the women out and treated them like shit. And to add insult to injury Laver et al were close friends with Billie Jean but that didn’t stop them from being misogynistic assholes!

      • Gerry Fisher

For an entertaining refresher course about those times, I thought the movie “Battle of the Sexes” was quite good. Steve Carrell was very good at playing a male chauvinist pig.

        • FAEN

I loved it! I’m a bit of a tennis history geek so it was nice to see it on film.

        • Craig Howell

Great movie, but to be historically correct, it should have included lots more bare-chested hunks carrying Billy Jean into the stadium, representing the entire UCLA football team. That spectacular scene is seared into my memory!

        • Kenster999

I had a question about that. The trailers and commercials showed him being explicitly chauvinistic. It was so over the top that I wondered if he sincerely felt that way, or if it was an act in order to gin up interest in the match. Thoughts?

    • LovesIrony

He has the Arena named after him…but Yvonne Gulagong would be apt

    • Guess

      I propose Billie Jean’s hairdresser.

      • Todd20036

        Is she your lover?

        • Guess

Nah, but she was Billie Jean’s for seven years! Sure wish it could have been as happily-ever-after as the movie!

          • JCF

Billie did find her happily-ever-after…just not w/ her (suing her for “galimony”) hairdresser. Did you see “Battle of the Sexes” (movie)? I thought there was very little chemistry between BJK (Emma Stone) and her (Andrea Riseborough, I think?). But that was the inherent problem of the narrative. Billie Jean’s first was a classic “Ms Wrong”.

    • FAEN

      No worries matey 😉

    • Bob Conti

The last paragraph doesn’t make sense… “a lot of people” said they supported marriage equality. That’s a lot more people than those who opposed.

  • pj

you were fine with a vote when you thought you would win.

    • FAEN

      • northern_neighbour

This brand of above mentioned Holier than Thou, utterly STINK to High Heaven, and all the way back down to Hell again!

What an odious flock of gossip mongering Satanic wannabees.

  • Dazzer

Oh goodie. Margaret Court is leading te charge to break up the Liberal (read conservatives/Republican) Party in Australia.

Many Progressives in Australia will be secretly thanking her and wishing the absolute best in her endeavours.

    • FAEN

I’ll take your word for it since I know next to nothing about Aussie politics.

Always good to see you matey 😊.

      • Dazzer

  • pj

if i had that many freckles on my neck id be bitter too.

  • Bluto

I apologize, but there really is no other word more appropriate for this person.

  • Tawdry D’Tails

Like a typical homo-hater/conservative, if you can’t win, change the rules or flat out ignore them.
She is truly one nasty, bitter hag.

    • Chris Baker

The legislature might pass marriage equality? “Let the people vote!”. Oops, the people voted for marriage equality? “Let the politicians ignore the people!”

She would sing a different tune if the people voted against equality and the legislature ignored them, right?

  • shellback

Hey Madge, Spray paint from a mortician’s supply house might be able to cover that decayed oak tree-looking throat.

  • Boreal

Withered old hag is angry and impotent.

Yes, ignore reality! She and her ilk have been doing it forever.

  • FAEN

    Margaret-Uganda beckons. Enjoy.

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Margaret honey, the only fuzzy balls I think you ever played with were on the court. aka… you need a good fuck.

  • TJay229

That Bitch is Salty ain’t she? 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

    Easier to ignore her.

  • Mark

Don’t let the door hit ya in your arse on the way out you washed up old has-been.

  • jruffdc

    Now that’s a turtleneck.

    • JCF

Much more repulsive than a turtle’s!

  • Gabe Davis

What a hag. But then she has been playing with balls for decades.

    • FAEN

  • ceeenbee

“We look at what’s there now and they are not listening to the conservatives or what a lot of people would like. They are not allowing you to speak. I don’t think I want to be with either party.”

No, you melanocytic, old wench, they are listening to what 62% of their constituents are saying. They are listening to those who say love is love. Why should they be forced to live by Bronze Age mythology about imaginary sky faeries?

You wanted to vote on people’s basic human rights because you thought the majority believed in the same bullshit you did. It was wrong to bring this to a vote because no majority should decide basic human rights of a minority. You did it anyway and you fucking lost. You got your asses handed to you. Now, just shut the fuck up and go away.

    • Dazzer

Up-vote for sentiments expressed here – and Internet gold star for “melancytic”.

  • William

Margaret is deeply distressed that somewhere, someone might be happy.

Hey you old wretch! Phyllis Snarfly needs a bridge companion. Stop ignoring her! I’ll be sending my special kitty to visit your bed soon.

  • Andymac3

You shouldn’t ignore things Margaret, like skin damage and factor 50 sun screen. There is a reason that these things exist, just like the gays, to make your world more colorful and fabulous!

  • Ray Page

Gay marriage? If she’s going to use her fame to grandstand, her pet issue should be mental illness. Namely hers.

  • Michael

And her opinion is important because?

    • Tawreos

      Because Jebus dammit

  • OdieDenCO

“..not listening to the conservatives or what a lot of people would like.” no they should listening to what a LOT of people would like. the majority have spoken. you maggy are the minority and should go home.

  • Gerry Fisher

Margaret, hon, when what you “like” is to lessen the freedom of others, we’re allowed not to care about or respect what you like. And, by the way, if you could have just kept your mouth shut post referendum, some of the animosity toward you would have died down. But it seems as if you a hellbent on being branded forever as the queen of homophobia.

  • ClevelandJim

Back to the crypt with you, Margaret sweetie.

  • BeaverTales

A Christianist tool without her handmaid’s veil saying that the people of Australia don’t make the law of the land, because only the Higher Power&#8482 she believes in can amend the Constitution?

    Color me surprised…..

  • William

Christmas in the middle of summer is pretty fucking weird. Best that you cancel it anyway.

  • netxtown

And maybe – just maybe, Ms C**t, politicians are SUPPOSED to represent the people. And over 60% voted yes. You’re outnumbered and out-gunned. Take your miserable religion and back hand it up your ass.

  • M Jackson

Hey Margaret, it’s Hitler here — repair to your bunker and consume cyanide capsule, and thank you for your service.

Diplomat Dies in a Fall After Celebrating Australia’s Gay Marriage Vote

An Australian diplomat fell to his death from the balcony of his Manhattan apartment on Wednesday morning after a night out celebrating Australia’s “yes” vote for gay marriage, the police said.

The diplomat, Julian Simpson, 30, had returned home with friends and headed to the seventh-floor balcony of his Clinton Street apartment on the Lower East Side to take in the Empire State Building. The spire was lit in rainbow colors that night to celebrate the Australian decision, in which more than 60 percent of the over 12 million voters who turned out on Wednesday approved legalizing gay marriage.

Something weird happened after he twirled a female on the balcony and scared her, then her husband and he played a ‘trust game’ on the balcony.

  • motordog

Martina shows grace and humor when dealing with this…this ‘person’…I, on the other hand, do not; Margie, go fuck yourself, you dried up, old (rhymes with ‘punt’). While I don’t actually wish any physical harm to befall you (I won’t go that far), I WILL take great satisfaction when you inevitably shuffle off this mortal coil. Can’t be soon enough for me, you hateful, ugly fossil…

  • Guess

^Is that on NEG, like the Negativity CNN?

  • FAEN

While Margaret whines Martina shines! There should be a correction though. Martina defected in 1975 and became a citizen in 1981. The WTA release has it wrong.

  • Bambino

Get back to the kitchen woman. You should not be seen speaking so publicly! Fulfill your God given domestic duty. While you are at it, iron that horrendous wrinkle neck of yours won’t you?! Sheesh! They don’t make women like they use to anymore. Bloody liberals letting women playing tennis in the public and now this!

    • Dazzer

Even worse – they show their ankles when they play tennis!!!!!!!!

  • Joseph Miceli

She is SUCH a stupid bitch.
On a more mature level: Margaret says to “follow your heart” and indeed, in a representative Democracy you are supposed to do that. If you feel the nation would be hurt by a popular fad, you are supposed to lead, not be swayed by the whims of the hoi poloi. However, you are also supposed to be able to put your prejudices aside and govern for the good of your people. This is where Margaret’s foolishness fails. There is no logical reason to delay or refuse same sex marriage, only blatant animus.
This is not leadership. This is the act of a stupid bitch.
Oops….it seems we got there again by the round about way!

Someone should really go to her church and free those poor gay people…I’m betting they’re locked in the basement, being ‘helped’.

  • motordog

What the religious right needs is some good, old fashioned martyrs! You know, the kind that throw themselves off buildings, take poison or set themselves on fire. Margie…I think that’s the LEAST you could do to really express your sincere faith in gawd’s will! Come ON, christian soldier! Take one for the team! I hear you can get, like, 20 virgins or something…is that right? Can I suggest sitting in front of an automatic tennis ball launcher, set to ‘James Bond Movie’ high? (When I said I was against wishing any physical harm, I didn’t mean the ‘self-inflicted’ kind).

It is very sad she has let herself become….this.

    • Reality.Bites

      You’re assuming she wasn’t always… this.

      • Rocco

I’m old enough to remember her “glory days.” She wasn’t …this…at least not publically. She did seem reserved, but was attractive, not a political or religious nut. I don’t recall her ever speaking out on any topic except tennis.

        • PeedeResistance

Sorry, no. She was exactly this, as the recent movie about Riggs and King, etc, makes more than clear. Her ugliness has never changed (she was never even close to ‘attractive’) and she was always a pariah among fellow players.

          • Rocco

I said it was what I recalled, what I perceived.

    • worstcultever

Really. Let’s put her next to her biggest pro rival of the day – Billie Jean King – and compare what both have done with their lives to better the world and inspire people.

(Not to mention, Court lost the initial “battle of the sexes” to Bobby Riggs – necessitating King to step up for a subsequent match and kick his ass)

  • The_Wretched

Hitler was not pro civil rights and pro equality. That Court does seem to get that detail is stark.

i recently learned that court lost to bobby riggs a year before billie jean king kicked his ass so definitively and was speculating that perhaps her completely irrational hostility towards gay people stems from the fact that a lesbian accomplished what she could not.

I declare superstitious Margaret Court to be an ignorant old has been.
How dare she hold herself up as a moral authority?
How dare she be so arrogant to think she has more wisdom than the public after this issue has been thoroughly vetted?
In every country that considered marriage equality, the religious bigots predicted doom and gloom and the end of society as we know it and the reign of Satin to begin.
Guess what – when the countries allowed gay marriage to happen, none, absolutely none of the religious bigots predictions came to pass.
What happened a was a lot of people were able to marry and a well of joy and happiness sprung up instead.
Margaret Court, your tribe has been utterly, completely discredited.

In what distopian parallel universe is this old cow a liberal? Or does “Liberal” have a different meaning in Oz than in the rest of the English-speaking world?

    • Mike

Maybe it’s like the toilet water, and in the southern hemisphere it’s the opposite: their liberals are antisocial right wing dooshbags.

      • Old Top Kick

I lived in England for a number of years and was always amused at some of the differences between British English and American English. In England, calling a woman “homely” is a compliment. It means the kind of woman that you’d like to come home to — sweet, attractive, etc. “Pokey” is pretty much the same — opposite meaning across the pond; slow in the US and fast in England.

Obviously there are differences between Australian English and British English, though I have to admit that this one caught me off guard.

    • -M-

Liberal is the conservative party in Australia and many other countries. They’re using liberal to mean free from government regulations (as long as you’re rich, white, etc).

      • Old Top Kick

Welp, I guess that I can add “liberal” to “homely” and “pokey” as things that mean exactly the opposite from what they do in the US.

        Thanks for the education!

        • -M-

It still means free or permissive, it’s just a matter of whose freedom they mean. Besides it’s being used as the name of the party now, not a description. Even knowing that: the Liberal Party being a country’s conservatives but not necessarily as conservative as U.S. liberals much less the conservatives, still evokes cognitive dissonance for me too.

    • The Liberal Party of Australia was founded in 1945, at the beginning of
the Cold War, and compared with the Marxist-leaning Labor Party of those
days (and with the ultra-conservative United Australia Party, now
defunct) their stance was indeed liberal and progressive for the day, though nowadays they are characterised as centre-right.

They have a long record in government, though always in coalition with the more conservative, indeed reactionary, Country Party, which was founded in 1920 and which re-branded itself The National Party of Australia in 1975.

As for Margaret Court, it will be interesting to see where she goes if she does walk out of the Liberal Party. I don’t think she will; she’s all talk.

      • Old Top Kick

OK, what we call Neo-liberal liberal in the US. A cute name for Libertarians and Republicans like Paul Ryan.

        Thanks for the education!

  • Paula

Poor Margaret. I am sure she is in fear of the roving bands of crazed Gay men that will be attacking people and giving them makeovers after Marriage becomes legal.
    Itz reel skerry!

  • Well the VAST majority of the citizens just shouted out a big “Fnck You, Maggot Court”, so the citizens beat you to the punch and just told the politicians to embrace same-sex marriage. For anyone who thinks gay marriage is going to diminish greedy @ss straight marriage, then your marriage is not a marriage to begin with. You’re just jealous because people that you hate just “trumped” your @ss.

  • Zollergasse

Love, love, love Martina! A true gay icon.

  • sequel

I find the spotty neck and non-spotty face discombobulating. Either skip the foundation, or apply it all the way down the neck. Not as relevant as the bigotry, but still needs to be said.

  • Canadian Observer

I was raised to believe that slamming someone for their appearance was wrong. Curiosity, however, was encouraged… so I would like to offer up a little thought experiment: if Margaret Court and Mitch McConnell were to spend time together someplace appropriate, say the Galapagos Islands, do you think tortoises would be more or less endangered?

Yeah, I thought the same thing.

  • Ken Berry

Bitter old hag. Must be just awful to realize you’ve dedicated your life to a book of iron age fairy tales.

  • Boy, I sure miss when we would hear “Jungle Bells” before Halloween in our stores before we got marriage equality in 2015. We never hear that anymore. No more red and green decorations for months and months. It’s been years since I could find a good candy cane or eggnog.

(Also, is she trying to imply that Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are religious holidays?)

  • infmom

Fair is fair. The world has been ignoring her for decades.

  • JCF

Whatever planet she’s from, send her back!

  • trouble94114

Hmm, perhaps Australia should just continue ignoring her.

And I’d strongly suggest a much stronger sunscreen for Margaret

  • sfprman

That neck. That face. She looks like a Gila Monster.

    • Dk

Gila Monsters are awesome. this one can slither back into her hole

    • Gianni

Looks like her appearance impressed you because you didn’t just pick any monster to compare her to. 🙂

  • Dunkerblinker

They need to pass a law that mandates she only wear turtlenecks

  • jonfromcalifornia

These fucking Evangelicals really have too much time on their hands being busy bodies (2 Thessalonians 3:11/12) and playing “judges” of other people’s morality (Matthew 7:1). I mean, really woman, attend to your own “salvation” (Philippians 2:12) and leave the rest of us alone! Also, doesn’t the Bible say it’s “disgraceful” for a woman to speak in church (1 Corinthians 14:25)? So why are you a “pastor”? You are disobeying your own Bible!

    • Gianni

Disobedience is in the eye of the bible-banger.

  • Itsatarp

“… they are not listening to … what a lot of people would like,”
Correct. They are listening to what the MAJORITY of people would like.

  • leastyebejudged

    kill it with fire.

  • Benji

I’m sorry Margaret, I can no longer ignore the majority sentiment of the people then I can your turtle neck. (no really, your turtle neck).

  • SDG

Because politicians need to listen to ex-tennis players with really bad skin.

  • Gianni

Maybe Australia should stop listening to Margaret Court? Her comments obviously come from somewhere other than off the top of her head.
