ALABAMA: Online Donations Pour In For Doug Jones

NBC News reports:

The Roy Moore scandal has unleashed a torrent of online donations to Democrat Doug Jones, who was collecting around $250,000 per day in its immediate aftermath, according to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to NBC News on condition of anonymity.

Democrats may end up in the unlikely situation of dramatically outspending the GOP in the Senate contest in deep red Alabama now that national Republicans have abandoned Moore. The Republican candidate’s bank account had been depleted by a tough primary battle even before nine women came forward to accuse of him of sexual impropriety.

The scandal has super-charged Jones’ already robust online fundraising to “Ossoff-level money,” as one Democrat put it, referring to failed Democratic congressional candidate Jon Ossoff, who amassed a staggering $30 million in a Georgia special election this year.

Excellent article… too bad the background given on FRC is “prominent evangelical activist group” rather than the Hate Group designation from SPLC… I emailed the authors regarding that oversight.

      • BobSF_94117

They certainly left Perkins off the hook for his anti-gay history.

Good for you Maggie, thanks. I’m sort of surprised they did that.

Rachel isn’t on tonight. Richard Engel is in her timeslot on Fridays.

        • Joe in PA

Yeah, I figured that out later. Dang. I’m not really a fan of Engel, I watched a bit of his show (Panama Trump Mafia) … felt forced and overly dramatic. Like a 20/20 or one of those network shows.

    • Todd Allis

      It is now posted.

It’s a shame. All that money could have been spent on Jim Bakker’s slopbuckets instead. Now the baby is going to starve when the libruls kill Trump.

    • hoover2001

They only care about the Supreme Court. Overturning Roe v Wade and then instituting a Constitutional amendment banning abortion is the endgame.

      • Stephen Elliot Phillips

        And abolishing same sex marriage

        • Ninja0980

If they had to pick one or the other, it would be the former.
I know people that support same sex marriage that turn into deranged tea baggers on steroids if abortion comes up.

        • hoover2001

True. But that’s a relatively new bringer-on-of-the-apocalypse. Abortion is, and always has been, their white whale.

        • Steverino

Yep. Obergefell first (challenged by red states that had constitutional amendments banning marriage equality), then a GOP-majority House and Senate passing, and a GOP president signing, a resuscitation of the Defense of Marriage Act, which when challenged and brought before a right-wing majority Supreme Court, would be held up, thus overturning Windsor, as well.

And away will go red state and Federal recognition of marriage equality down the drain.

This is one of the reasons for us why flipping to a Dem majority either the House, Senate, or both during the duration of the Trump / Pence regime is so critical.

          • David L. Caster

Vital in fact. That criticality must be communicated to progressives and plain Democrats. Our country is in great peril from these so-called “conservatives” and they must be stopped.

        • jruffdc

          And then recriminalize being gay

        • Todd20036

          And abolishing gay sex.

Make no mistake, putting us in camps is their end game, not just ending marriage.

        • Tom Furgas

And trying to institute Christianity (their hypocritical version of it, anyway) as the State Religion.

      • The_Wretched

They won’t stop at abortion. Birth control will be next or at the same time.

        • marshlc

I know you’re right, but that just makes my head explode.

The very best way to lower the abortion rate is to have high quality cheap birth control available to all. Given away free in high schools, for choice.

To me it’s the clearest signal that they actually don’t, deep down, really believe abortion is murder, because if they did, they’d be doing this simple thing to prevent it.

    • Judas Peckerwood

I have no doubt that these garbage people would vote for Pol Pot if he had an R after his name.

      • Todd20036

They already voted for Hitler’s idiot grandson.

And Trump is right about this much: He could shoot someone on 5th avenue and his base STILL wouldn’t care, especially if the victim were a Jew/black/liberal/gay

On a purely evil level, I want Moore to win.

Moore = “Party party party, gurl…we win!” – for the Democrats.

    • AlternativeQuacks

Not necessarily. If Moore wins, the Fox Noise machine (and Breitbart, Drudge, Infowars, 4chan, Wikileaks, Putin’s bots, etc.) still has 10 months to hip-mo-tize their zombies and somehow make it all Hillary’s fault before the election, which they have shown that they are very skilled at.

If Moore loses, in Alabama of all places, it will be a political earthquake in DC and the Republicans might back off their worse pieces of pending legislation. Or they might decide it’s time to cut Trump loose or else they’re all going down with the S.S. Trumptanic.

    New post about KKK Tony.

  • GlennF

Maybe national Democrats and especially the divided leadership of the DNC, should let Doug Jones handle this election on his own the way he sees fit. He knows the electorate of Alabama better than Bernie Sanders surrogate Keith Ellison or Obama surrogate Tom Perez. They seemed to have screwed up Jon Ossoff’s run for office earlier this year.

    • The_Wretched

I thought Ossif ran a “moderate” campaign.

  • sequel

Comment as an outsider: I’ve never donated to a politician. I’ve never met anyone who has donated to a politician. I’ve never come across a South African politician asking for a donation to themselves or their party. I’m entirely sure if they did ask, it would reflect badly on them. Donating to politicians seems vaguely undemocratic to me, like it’s tipping the scales.

Side note about politics and sex – our president, Zuma, has 6 wives, the last time I checked. He was on trial for rape of a mentally disabled family friend while running for president. She is HIV+, and his “protection” was to take a shower afterwards – his words. He was acquitted because she wasn’t seen as a reliable witness as to whether it was consensual. Fucked up, I know. Rape should have disqualied him from political office, but 6 wives and plenty on the side is seen as his own private life. Nothing to do with politics.

Again, outsider perspective. This perspective obviously wouldn’t fly in the US.

    • Bj Lincoln

Thanks for the interesting view. It is one of the ‘dirty ‘parts of the process I too find vulgar. I feel bad for the disabled girl.

      • sequel

Yea, it is terrible. He fully admitted there was intercourse, but she contradicted herself at some point during questioning. She thought of him as an uncle :/

The judge seemed to resent the verdict he had to give. Zuma was smirking like a comic book villain. Trevor Noah pointed out a few of the many similarities between Zuma and Trump. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tKOV0KqPlg
