LIVE VIDEO: Australia Marriage Survey Result

The highly-anticipated result of Australia’s non-compulsory postal survey on same-sex marriage will be announced at 6PM New York City time, which is 10AM tomorrow in Sydney.

Australia’s News Corp outlet reports:

The man with the golden envelope, containing the final tally, will be Australian Statistician David W. Kalisch. Ahead of the public announcement, Mr Kalisch will inform Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, as well as a select number of representatives from both the Yes and No camps.

A poll in the Australian on Tuesday, the last before results day, showed the Yes vote on 63 per cent, a figure that has edged up as the campaign has continued. Yes voters will be hoping the polls are accurate, and not some Brexit-style aberration.

The No camp will, of course, be hoping for the exact opposite. But they would settle for a result over 40 per cent. Tony Abbott has said this would be a “moral” victory — if not, you know, an “actual” victory.

The Daily Mail reports:

Liberal senator Dean Smith plans to introduce a bill to allow same-sex marriage on Thursday. The Senate will be asked on Wednesday to support a move to introduce draft laws allowing same-sex marriage on Thursday.

Liberal senator Dean Smith lodged a notice of motion for the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Bill to be brought on, one day after the result of the national survey is released.

The motion, co-signed by Labor and crossbench senators, also seeks to put the bill at the top of the schedule for the final fortnight of parliament starting on November 27. The motion also seeks for the bill to have precedence over all government and general business.

The live ABC stream below is inexplicably muddy. You might have to refresh this post to turn on the Mardi Gras clip minutes before 6PM New York City time.

Vaulted ceilings are grand. Homes with vaulted ceilings can be grand. Homes with vaulted ceilings (which are grand) that lack the corresponding art work, window coverings and other sound dampening materials should be avoided at all costs.

      Thank you, that is all…

      • edrex

i hate homes with vaulted ceilings. vaulted ceilings belong only in castles, cathedrals and some libraries.

        • Nic Peterson

Ski chalets benefit from open beam work as well, so there are some applications. But for the most part, vaulted ceilings are nothing more but an excuse to litter a home with windows that will never be properly dressed and shelves that accumulate fake plants, which causes human suffering.

    • William

      So, he’s got a boyfriend?

    • Treant

Strangely, Jesus was really down on divorce. He didn’t say jack about gays or people cohabitating, but that divorce thing? Not cool.

      You go, Chrystocrites. You go.

      • (((GC)))

Actually, the couple, Nick and Sarah Jensen, have said they don’t intend to separate, and will remain married in the eyes of the church. They’ll just get a civil divorce, since they don’t want to be part of an institution that recognizes same-sex couples as married.

“The Christian couple have been happily married for over a decade, have no intention of separating and hope to have more children.”

        • narutomania

CORRECTION: more bastard children out of wedlock.

And here’s a question for these christianist weirdos: if you consider yourself “married in the eyes of” Jeebuzz, then why did you get “civil married” in the first place?

        • Zeldacat

          Fuck those assholes.

How much has same-sex marriage has affected my life – as in day-to-day? Hmm…being happy other people can marry as their inclinations lie? How is that bad? I’m quite happy being single and mostly straight. How much has it affected any other people’s marriages I’ve known? NOT IN THE FUCKING SLIGHTEST except for the one gay couple who were FINALLY ABLE TO MARRY after being together for nearly as long as I’ve been alive.

        • Treant

So another half-assed Chrystocrit effort that still breaks the rules without actually being effective. 🙂

    • Elsewhere1010

OK,, but no more sleeping together b/c that would become adultery.

      • Gustav2

        • (((GC)))

And the problem with that is…?

    • Bob Conti

Ah yes, forgot about them, because they’re so forgettable.

  • JoeMyGod
  • JoeMyGod
  • Treant

A Yes win will be nice, of course, but it’s not binding and they’re not going to allow a vote anyway. This just bought them some more delay time, and from here on out they’ll just say that not enough of the population was for it.

It’s scary that the United States was actually more progressive than Australia on this issue, but there it is.

    • Gustav2

But our courts had to do it first to get the polls to reach 60% approval.

      • whatever works.

      • Natty Enquirer

Our decision was based on Constitutional principle, not a popularity poll.

        • OdieDenCO

as it should be. if you hold the truths to be self evident, there can be no other outcome.

  • JoeMyGod
  • Jamie Wilson

I have been following the postal survey very closely. The last slew of polls indicate that Yes should come in in the low 60% range. They are all clustered at around 62-64%. However, it could be lower. Yes stupidly terminated its get-out-the-vote operation about 10 days early, so that could cost us a few points. And there was one weird analysis by 2 academics which predicted a narrow win for No based on twitter activity. 50% plus 1 is a win, but I think both sides consider 60% as a psychological break point for an unqualified Yes victory. At 63 or 64%, Yes also would have won the majority of all voters on the rolls, even those who didn’t vote.

Even though the pro-equality side never wanted to go through this survey, there is something positive about having Australians engage in a discussion and then actively sign on to this change. It may also help LGB Aussies feel real ownership of their new right to marry. Assuming, of course, that we win.
