Australian PM Vows “Marriage Before Christmas”

Moments after the survey result was announced, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull appeared before national cameras and vowed his intention to get a same-sex marriage bill through Parliament by Christmas. Watch below.

Earlier today, Turnbull denounced right wing plans to laden the bill with “religious liberty” amendments which would legalize anti-LGBT discrimination by wedding-related businesses. According to Turnbull, such amendments are “non-starters.”

Mr Turnbull has strong words for the ‘no’ campaigners.

He says the Australian people have spoken clearly and want politicians to act.

The response “is unequivocal, it is overwhelming. They are our masters. It is up to us to get on with it”.
    10:20am
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is speaking.

People have “voted yes for fairness, they voted yes for commitment, they voted yes for love”.

It is now up to politicians to make sure the will of the people is respected by Parliament and the legislation is passed by Christmas.

  • ben-andy

    Suck it, haters!

My best friend has lived in Sydney for many years. I hope he has a groom all lined up for the impending nuptials. The husband and I would love to be in the wedding [the husband can officiate, I’ll be matron of honor].

  • Judas Peckerwood

Wow, a conservative politician who actually respects the will of the people. Imagine that.

    • Tawreos

In front of the cameras when all of the attention is focused on the issue he is. We will see how he feels when the cameras are off.

    • Cackalaquiano

I don’t know that “conservative” is such an extreme term in other countries as it’s become here.

      • bkmn

I think most countries don’t spell conservative using the letters C-R-A-Z-Y

  • j.martindale

And he made the speech without pimping a hotel or something. Oh, for the days of real politicians in office!

  • Ninja0980

Make sure there are no “religious protections” for bigots who refuse to do their jobs.

    • margaretpoa

I think they should feel free to not do their jobs…and then they should be free to get their worthless, bigoted asses fired for it. Then they should feel free to pull themselves up by their (Dingo) boot straps since people shouldn’t have to subsidize bigotry.

This is how Democracy is done, US Conservatives. Turnbull’s side lost and he managed to be honest and gracious about it. Too bad you asshats can’t be as civilized

    • bobbleobble

No, his side won. He’s always been pro SSM, if sometimes a little lukewarm, and he campaigned for YES. He was originally against the vote too until he became PM.

      • Ray Taylor

Thanks. Had no idea, so hard to keep track.

      • margaretpoa

Turnbull is head of Australia’s Labor Party, they are and have always been anti marriage equality.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Watching him on ABC (Australia), he’s not pulling any punches and he’s clearly in no mood to be fucked over. Pretty emphatic that this happen asap.

He knows the voters have spoken and are watching. Plus he covered his ass with this vote.

Cue the bigots here who will say this is how it should be done, blah blah blah.
For the record, NO one over in Australia wanted it done the way it was done, especially since it’s non-binding but two, minority rights should never be up to a public vote, EVER.

      • Paul

        Jesus is a hellavadrug.

      • lymis

I agree with your point. I just want to pedantically correct one important specific.

We in America DID have votes on the matter. The Constitution -including the language that established the judiciary – was ratified by vote. States joining the Union voted to join subject to the Constitution. The 10th and 14th amendments (as well as other Constitutional language) were adopted by vote. The people who nominate and confirm judges and justices are elected by vote.

So when the courts declare that marriage equality is required by interpretation of the Constitution, there’s a whole lot of votes that underlays their part in the process.

The Court did not rule for marriage equality independent of voting. They did so as a result of it.

    • margaretpoa

Wow, poor, persecuted you, SunsetLament. Maybe you should just end it all by jumping off a bridge.

    • Publius

If 99% of people voted against marriage equality, then marriage equality would still be just as much of a human right. Voting on rights is unacceptable, and a complete misuse of majority rule.

Luckily in this case, it worked out. But a No would have set the movement back for years. We should always work to keep votes like these to a minimum.

    • j.martindale

Sunset lament: I could find smarter living creatures than you when I rake the yard.

    • JohnAGJ

Ah but look at the silver lining here: the fact that a majority of the public did vote in favor of it makes the cries of opponents all the more enjoyable! 🙂

    • Todd20036

Is SunsetLament anyone important, or just a random blogger?

PM is going to be fending off a lot of amendments, not just to the marriage bill but to federal nondiscrimination law generally. His solution seems to be to open amendment votes to all parties.

That is because they will be subject to a series of conscience votes on both sides, requiring a majority from the collective pool of Coalition, Labor and Greens MPs.
