Ted Cruz Finally Turns On Roy Moore: Actions Make Him Unfit To Serve In Senate, Merit Criminal Prosecution

The Hill reports:

Sen. Ted Cruz on Monday withdrew his support from Alabama GOP Senate nominee Roy Moore, saying allegations of sexual misconduct by Moore should be looked at by prosecutors.

“As it stands, I can’t urge the people of Alabama to support a campaign in the face of these charges without serious, persuasive demonstration that the charges are not true,” Cruz told reporters, according to a Texas Tribune reporter.

“Both last week and this week, there are serious charges of criminal conduct that if true, not only make him unfit to serve in the Senate but merit criminal prosecution,” he added.

But notice Cruz did put an “if true” in there.

  • Paula

Really, Ted? That means so much coming from you. /sssss
    Vomit!
You merit criminal prosecution for being so fucking creepy.

  • Judas Peckerwood

Even if the charges weren’t true, there’s still no one more manifestly unfit to serve in Congress than Roy Moore. Except maybe Ted Cruz.

  • Sam_Handwich

i think John Cornhole caved today, too

so that leaves Rand Paul as sole remaining senate endorsement…and he may be incapacitated due to broken ribs and opioids

    • jerry

      And bad landscaping decisions…

      • Sam_Handwich

you talking about his hair or lawn?

        • jerry

          Yes.

          😨

      • AlternativeQuacks

Ferns need some shade, they don’t do well in direct sunlight. And rhododendrons need a more acidic soil. That merits a few broken ribs.

      • BearEyes

I hate that rug on his head too

      • xzargo

OK, what’s REALLY going on with the Rand Paul thing?

        • Judas Peckerwood

Somebody was sleeping with somebody they shouldn’t have, and somebody got angry.

        I hate when that happens

    • gaycuckhubby

          • Uncle Mark

Brilliant comment, unfortunately this turd didn’t fall too far from the asshole. Remember Ted’s daddy was running around the country in 2012 slamming Obama, and calling him a communist dictator (ironic since he fled Cuba for his support of Castro during the Batista years.). He also accused Obama of not being an American, let alone not being born here (again with the irony). Lastly, Ted’s father was pretty much preaching that Ted was god’s anointed to rule the US, while calling Obama the Beast.

          • Tawreos

So she has good taste then.

      • ben

to be fair, keep in mind that is Ted Cruz’s daughter.

  • Pollos Hermanos

So are we up to 67 Senators for expulsion yet?

    I lost track.

    • Sam_Handwich

i guess it depends what sort of game the Dem might want to play with this

      • Pollos Hermanos

Safer for them to just vote him out.

I did say earlier it would be funny if they wanted to be total dicks and keep him in the Senate but there’s no way in hell they’d do that.

        • leastyebejudged

Him in the Senate would truly be the gift that keeps on giving.

          • Sam_Handwich

yup and that’s the trick Dems have in their pocket. they could withhold votes until every republican agrees to expel him

Him being on the Senate would be AWESOME.

I think that’s the most passionate, frustrated, pro-gay statement from a GOPer that I’ve heard.

        • AmeriCanadian

Not necessarily pro-gay but rather anti-evangelical (and GOP teabaggers by extension). It was impressive though.

          • Cuberly Deux

I disagree, he was lamenting people being prevented from living their lives. Yeah, he mean’t it as a slap against talibanjelical social issues. But, it was also more of the olde tyme version of conservative…the much ballyhooed keeping gov out of people’s lives.

          • AmeriCanadian

He used it to make his final point that the evangelicals are hypocrites of the highest order. That, at least, was my interpretation. Perhaps we are saying the same thing. I definitely felt his frustration.

          • Cuberly Deux

Yep, sort of a mix of what used to be conservative orthodoxy and the inherent conundrum with the talibanjelicals.

      • Lumpy Gaga

Steele’s had better moments than the above quote.

        • UrsusArctos 🐻

It’s interesting to see the “Country above Party” people emerge from the dungheap of the GOP. I have YUGE disagreements with Steve Schmidt (swoon), Nicolle Wallace, Anna Navarro, and Rick Wilson but I have come to respect them all for speaking common sense to the idiots in their party. Despite my inclination, I know there are GOPers who want the best for the country and that I could have a conversation with them. Steele seems to be approaching their point of view and speaking his mind rather than the party line.

    • Sam_Handwich

      damn missed it

It was pretty cool. Basically telling the GOP to get the fuck out of social issues.

          *perk* ;D

      • UrsusArctos 🐻

Steve Schmidt? explosion? Oops, give me a minute to get my mind out of the gutter. *grin*
I have watched him since his commentary on same sex marriage. He’s an ally and spoke out that “pursuit of happiness” applied to gay people too. His sister being a lesbian probably helped. Coming out does make LGBTQ folk less alien, even to GOP operatives. Election night Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace articulated MUCH closer to my thoughts than any of the liberal commenters. I think they weren’t wrapped up in the whole “She LOST” thing and were seeing the coming “Oh GAWD he won”.

    • AmeriCanadian

I think what Steele had to say is important for those who missed it.
So I took the liberty to transcribe his important point:

Chris…Can I address that point real quickly? The back story of where the evangelical Christians are in this is really straightforward. This is all about the supreme court. This is all about the president and staying strong with the president so that appointments can be made that can reverse the Roe v. Wade decision, that can push back on the gay marriage decisions, and the other social agendas that have found some credence with the current supreme court. So that’s what holds a lot of these evangelicals in place which, in my view, well, I won’t get into that.

Cross talk with Chris Hayes, who asks him to continue.

I just think that it’s STUPID. You can not forsake morality. If you’ve
been preaching and judging the country for the last 40 years, on their behavior, their lifestyles, who they love, who they don’t love, what they do, what they don’t say. And all of a sudden, because you want a supreme court appointment, you’re going to throw all of that away to me is just the height of hypocrisy.

      • Cuberly Deux

It has that odd sound though, almost like he’s separating out the evangelicals from the fact that the GOP is DEEPLY enmeshed with them.

That was what I was getting at.

      • KnownDonorDad

They rationalize their actions by saying that they’re using modern-day Jehus like Trump to accomplish righteous goals.

      • Lumpy Gaga

Well, I had my doubts, but these are, as you say, the floodgates. Still, for the damage he will do to his party, I hope he holds in there as long as possible.

      • Lazycrockett

Moore has no allegiance to the party that was firmly against him in the primary.

      • GayOldLady

He’ll be out by the end of the week if he doesn’t want to completely destroy himself. When former employees of the Gasden Mall come forward to say he was thrown out of the Mall for cruising for children, the dam is breached. No telling what we’ll find out tomorrow.

        • UrsusArctos 🐻

Maybe, maybe not. As I have said from the start the best chance to defeat him is to remind people in Alabama how he will be a non-stop embarrassment. This information coming out should do that UNLESS it’s too late for the “fake news”/preacher endorsements/Anti-McConnell to get thin enough to get through to the knuckleheads that it is real and he’ll make them “look bad”.

    • Ross

“Life as he’s known it is over.”

      And praise the Lord!

    • Cuberly Deux

Well, he still has that outstanding IOU from his (COUGH) foundation. Maybe he can cash that in?

      • Tor

Does his foundation actually have it, or is the foundation just smoke and mirrors?

    • It’s going to take a phone call from McConnell telling Moore that if elected he’ll be expelled immediately.

Anything short of that, he’ll have no reason to drop out to avoid the shame.

      • boobert

I doubt that call would make any difference to moore.

      • Lazycrockett

I doubt McConnell has enough power to even attempt that.

        • Lazycrockett

You need 2/3rd of the senate to expel a elected senator.

          • It’s already been proposed. Dems would be onboard. And it can’t be that difficult to round up half of the GOP Senators if they’re told Luther Strange (or some other GOPer) would immediately be appointed to complete the remaining 2 years of what would’ve been Jeff Sessions’ term of office.

          • Treant

Personally, if I were a Dem? I wouldn’t vote to expel.

“The good people of Alabama have voted for the Republican kiddie fucker they feel best represents them in the Senate. We have no right to expel this Republican child molester against the will of the Republican voters of Alabama, even though this Republican fucked children.”

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

I loathe Moore, but Dems shouldn’t do the GOP any goddamn favors. I’d extort something big out of them. It would take Garland SCOTUS big before they should lift a damn finger.

          • Tor

            I agree.

      • GayOldLady

Moore has to spend the rest of his miserable life in Alabama and if he doesn’t do something to stop the flood of information quickly, he will be totally disgraced. More women are going to come out. Co-workers and former Mall employees are spilling the beans. Soon we’ll find out that his affection for little girls continues still. He won’t be able to hold his hypocritical head up if the water gets much deeper. I think he’ll get out within the next few days, with or without a call from McConnell.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

I don’t know. I’m not thinking highly of the people in Alabama right now. After all, the Duggars still have fans.

    • KnownDonorDad

I don’t know if the world is that kind, but one can hope….

    • greenmanTN

Short of a photo of him having sex with a child being released I don’t think he will drop out. It just doesn’t fit The Ballad Of Poor Put-Upon Roy Moore that he’s been concocting for decades. He’s like Trump in that admitting he did something wrong is literally beyond him.

  • Lazycrockett

Wow so wiki was telling the Drumpf campaign the night of the election when it looked like Hillary was going to win NOT to concede the election.

  • BeaverTales

If Doug Jones wins, then the Senate turns bluer. If Moore wins, then he will turn the Senate Blue due to the backlash in 2018. If they get Moore to step down now, Luther Strange can mount a winning write-in campaign against Jones and the Senate stays red.

The GOP is getting desperate to be rid of this asshole before December 12.

Ironically, Democrats have the best chance of winning the Senate in 2018 if Moore stays in the race.

    • coram nobis

What if Moore wins? How long will the criminal indictment and trial take to get under way? Could be a lot of fun watching the drip, drip, drip of stories, perp walks, courtroom sketches, &c. &c.

    • Lumpy Gaga

The GOP is getting desperate to be rid of this asshole before December 12.

They’re actually doing an encore of 2016: publicly poo-hooing that dreadful man who isn’t REALLY one of US… but then once installed, in with the voting and the signing and the confirming, etc.

They want it both ways: “I publicly came out and said he was a pig.”

Expect GOP to introduce legislation to protect themselves and their voters, borrowed from existing laws in France! (September 27, 2017) (Debate has started in France about what we would call a “statutory rape” provision with ages 13 and 15 being considered.)

French prosecutors have decided that sex between an 11-year-old and a 28-year-old man was consensual, prompting outrage across the country.

The man will only face the charge of sexual abuse of a minor – which
carries a sentence of five years in prison – rather than rape, because
he did not physically force her to have sex with him.

did you enjoy the horror flick?

      • safari

We ended up watching a combination of 18th century cooking, the eccentricities of a 1970s Caddy Eldorado, a promotional video about a giant well in Kansas (one of Kansas’s 8 wonders), and a dramatization of a vampiric TB legend. But no horror movie. It was great.

        • greenmanTN

I read a non-fiction book about a vampiric TB legend. They believed the dead girl was draining her family of life from the grave so they dug her up, cut out her heart and burned it. They claimed she hadn’t decomposed at all despite being dead and buried for quite a while.

          Same one?

National Sandwich Day is our only hope

      • Lazycrockett

As an adult I find Christmas deeply disappointing.

      • Gretchen

I’m willing to skip straight ahead to St. Patrick’s Day. I asked my sister last week what would happen if we just ignored Christmas this year. We both agreed it is a pipe dream.

        • fuzzybits

It’s coming on winter. I’m looking forward to celebrating Ground Hog Day.

          • Gretchen

This is my family’s second Christmas without our mom. We stumbled through last year on autopilot, but this year feels harder. I’m the oldest of six kids and we have eleven children amongst us. The second eldest and I feel a lot of pressure to hold things together when we would honestly rather spend Christmas hiding in our respective beds. Ground Hogs Day sounds like a great holiday celebrate instead.

          • JCF

            {{{Gretchen}}}

The first Christmas w/o my mom was extra-weird (she passed away only about 6 weeks before). We intentionally did everything different (NOT in the ol’ homestead in Sacramento, instead at my brother’s place in LaLaLand), but the weirdness could not be escaped.

Time, my friend. Only time eases it…

          • Gretchen

We lost our Mom in March, so we had most of that first year to convince ourselves that we were FINE. We intentionally did things basically the same as always like we had to prove that we were holding things together no problem. This year the bravado has faded, and the genuine loss has taken hold. We are having Thanksgiving at a nice restaurant instead of the traditional dinner at our parents’ house. I’m trying to talk everyone into renting a cabin for Christmas. We can’t keep on with this fake it till we make it attitude. It isn’t healthy.

Just an aside: Mom always referred to herself as the B-O-S-S. If you asked “why” you couldn’t do x, y, or z, she would say, “because I’m the B-O-S-S.” Recently one of my sisters posted a Facebook rant about me and asked who died and made me boss. One of my other sisters saw saw and replied with the most deadpan, “Mom.” So we all had a bit of a laugh about how I have been training all my life for the job as B-O-S-S. Last week one of my sisters made it official. She found an awful pair of stretchy yoga pants with the word BOSS printed on the ass and presented them to me at our family bonfire. It’s good to have siblings…even a spoiled rotten baby brother.

It seems ALL the holiday seasons are getting longer. There were Carnival Krewe parties/balls last week. Once upon a time (the 1990s) there were a couple of Carnival events after Thanksgiving, but nothing serious until 12th Night (6 Jan). The Camellia Ball / Debutante Balls (usually held the Friday after Thanksgiving) started the winter social season for ages, but no more.

        • Treant

That and the Hallmark Holidays. My husband and I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day per se (his birthday being the day after), but Mom gets annoyed if a VD gift doesn’t show up.

      Christianism.

    • DoctorDJ

      (Who is Mr. Robinson?)

    • Sure he would. Jesus would recognize it totally as the logical descendant of the money-changers and Pharisee hypocrites he violently threw out of the temple.

They taught about God but did not love God — they did not enter the kingdom of heaven themselves, nor did they let others enter.

They preached God but converted people to dead religion, thus making those converts twice as much sons of hell as they themselves were.

They taught that an oath sworn by the temple or altar was not binding, but that if sworn by the gold ornamentation of the temple, or by a sacrificial gift on the altar, it was binding. The gold and gifts, however, were not sacred in themselves as the temple and altar were, but derived a measure of lesser sacredness by being connected to the temple or altar. The teachers and Pharisees worshiped at the temple and offered sacrifices at the altar because they knew that the temple and altar were sacred. How then could they deny oath-binding value to what was truly sacred and accord it to objects of trivial and derived sacredness?

They taught the law but did not practice some of the most important parts of the law — justice, mercy, faithfulness to God. They obeyed the minutiae of the law such as tithing spices but not the weightier matters of the law.

They presented an appearance of being ‘clean’ (self-restrained, not involved in carnal matters), yet they were dirty inside: they seethed with hidden worldly desires, carnality. They were full of greed and self-indulgence.

They exhibited themselves as righteous on account of being scrupulous keepers of the law, but were in fact not righteous: their mask of righteousness hid a secret inner world of ungodly thoughts and feelings.

They were full of wickedness. They were like whitewashed tombs, beautiful on the outside, but full of dead men’s bones.

They professed a high regard for the dead prophets of old, and claimed that they would never have persecuted and murdered prophets, when in fact they were cut from the same cloth as the persecutors and murderers: they too had murderous blood in their veins

“Rich people to Congress: Raise our taxes, don’t cut them.

The GOP plan to reduce income taxes on the super rich “further exacerbates inequality” at a time when the gap between rich and poor is historically wide, said a group of 400 left-leaning CEOs, doctors, lawyers and business owners, all of whom are calling on the Republican Party to drop the proposal.

“The Republican tax plan would disproportionately benefit wealthy individuals and corporations with provisions including repealing the estate tax, repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax, and slashing the top pass-through tax rate,” the group, which calls itself Responsible Wealth, wrote in an open letter to Congress.”

One large group of rich people: Raise our taxes, please!

Other smaller but equally rich group: Cut our taxes. Here’s a few million bucks to make it happen. If you don’t cut them, money goes away.

      • Cuberly Deux

Ever wonder how much cash the Mercers have doled out to every nut-job cause under the sun including Breitbart?

The bizarre hobby of throwing so much money around & demanding massive tax cuts. Even though they’ve already spent a shit ton of money.

        • bkmn

That is the problem, when millions are virtually meaningless to billionaires.

        • BobSF_94117

I’m actually quite surprised at how little money it takes to shape politics in this country. The Mercers have spent a couple hundred millions, maybe, over years. They owe $7B in taxes.

Maybe our politicians need to hold out for bigger graft…

      • netxtown

Another ‘problem’ is that a tax increase just kinda quietly disappears into the fed’s piggy bank. OTH, with a tax cut, the rich lepers can use that money to buy, sell, and trade politicians, legislation, etc…

It was as open-and-shut as anything I have seen
He was a pillar of town, his reputation was clean
It was right before Easter in the first week of spring
He didn’t show up for service that Wednesday night
The congregation knew something weren’t right
Blood on the bed when they opened the door
The preacher was dead on the bedroom floor
Everyone knew there had to be some outside thing that made this happen
Because they seemed like the perfect family
He’d been shot in the back a day before he was found
His wife and three kids were nowhere around
An Amber Alert was issued in town
Everyone was shocked at the scene of the crime
She’d taken the kids across two state lines
Found her in Orange Beach with the kids in the car
Sent back to Selma to await her trial for first-degree murder
Was she crazy or just plain old mean to have gone and done it?
She said she heard the bang and was afraid he’d be mad, and made a run for it
Said, they were having a fight and the gun was a bluff
She didn’t pull the trigger, it just went off
Said that he berated her about everything
Make her do things that made her feel so ashamed
Nobody at church would ever suspect
Made her dress up slutty before they had sex
In the courtroom that day there was an audible gasp
What they put up on display the locals couldn’t quite grasp
There was an audible gasp in the courtroom that day
When the defense pulled out and displayed
Them high-heeled shoes and that wig he made her wear
Reduced her charge to voluntary manslaughter
And I ain’t judging either way, but she’s already out of jail
And it was them high-heeled shoes and that wig he made her wear

Judge Roy Moore, you in danger!

Doug Jones has a chance to win even if Luther Strange is a write-in.

Murkowski won her write-in campaign in 2010, because Alaska democrats knew that the Democrat wouldn’t win. When we allied ourselves with the segment of Republicans disgusted with griftin’ Joe Miller (the Ted Cruz/Roy Moore of Alaska) we had a moderate Republican, but Lisa owed the progressives who elected her.

I know people who are friends with Lisa socially (I live less than a mile away from her house in Alaska), and she doesn’t like the extreme wing of her party, but she keeps that private. She and Sarah Palin despise each other, but Palin’s career is over in Alaska. Palin couldn’t even get elected dogcatcher in Wasilla.

Lisa paid us Alaska Dems back by voting to save Obamacare, and is one of the leading anti-Trump voices in the GOP. She supports Planned Parenthood, LGBT rights and healthcare reform, but supports opening ANWR and gun rights. She’s ideologically similar to Susan Collins and Heidi Heitkamp.

Democrats around the country don’t realize that sometimes you need to take a single step backwards to take 2 steps forward, especially in states with large Democratic minorities. Ideological purity doesn’t actually exist here in Alaska. This is a state where moderates do well, but thanks to Religion, they typically have to be Republican to hold statewide office.

    • CB

      Nicely put! Thanks.

    • Reality.Bites

I really don’t think Democrats can be faulted for the lack of Republican voices like hers.

It’s overwhelmingly a two-party system and she was only there for Democrats to vote for because she launched a write-in campaign against her party.

It’s a fluke. Not a model. And even if it could be replicated, its success depends 100% on Republicans being disgusted with their own party’s candidates.

      • BeaverTales

I really don’t think Democrats can be faulted for the lack of Republican voices like hers…. success depends 100% on Republicans being disgusted with their own party’s candidates

No party is 100% satisfied with its establishment candidate, not even Democrats will follow a flawed candidate off a cliff in the name of party unity. You’d know this if you’ve ever attended an American political party caucus.

Simplistic double-bind political models about American politics apply only in high population states where the American JMG commentariat is mostly based: i.e. LGBT friendly states on the Eastern and Western Seaboards, or Great Lakes with primaries, not caucuses…your reasoning applies to urban states with primaries only, not anywhere else.

Saying it once is saying it a hundred times: All Politics is local. Ever since 2008, Democrats have failed to understand this. They can and should be faulted for handing a majority of potential swing states to Republicans in both Congress and the Electoral college.

The difference with Murkowski was that the percentage of moderates in both parties in Alaska is large enough to transcend party labels in our voting. People who don’t live in states like mine fail to understand this, which is why when they show up to “help” with their big money, lazy pollsters and condescension, they typically wind up screwing the pooch for those of us who know our own states best.
