NFL Attendance Rises Slightly Despite Boycott

Yahoo Sports reports:

Fans angry with the NFL and its protesting players called for a boycott on Veterans Day weekend. But other fans showed up to Sunday’s games, and in greater numbers than they had averaged all season.

Many fans have said they would boycott the NFL, and loosely organized movements on Twitter and Facebook sought to flex patriotic muscle by boycotting the entire slate of games this holiday weekend.

However, the numbers don’t indicate that any boycotts, if indeed they happened, had a meaningful numerical effect. In fact, total attendance at the eight early games on Sunday, as reported by the NFL, was up about 1 percent over season averages.

Breitbart, predictably, is claiming that the boycott was a huge success, posting numerous shots of empty seats. But even some commenters there are pointing that some of photos were taken near the ends of the games, when many fans had already given up.

When they are finished boycotting Hamilton.

        • Bambino

I suppose it’s too gay for the Keurig smashers to post a video of burning their subscription.

          • Steverino

I’m still trying to wrap my head around any one of them actually owning a Keurig. Black and Decker, maybe.

      • Chucktech

Damn, your photo doesn’t show up on my computer. However, judging from everyone’s responses and your otherwise fine taste and character, I’m gonna say “Ooooo, yeah, I’d do him.”

I can’t see it either, but I think they’re referring to the GQ Colin Kaepernick cover.

It’s the same few Keurig smashers who exaggerate as usual about their huge numbers.

    • KnownDonorDad

The best part is…they already bought the Keurig machines, they’re just destroying their property. Also, assuming they only use the disposable K-cups, by not using Keurig anymore they’re actually helping the environment a bit.

      • peacfulseas inWA

In reality their Keurigs were sitting on a shelf in the garage /basement with an accumulation of dust. They’ve gone back to their old Mr. Coffee. My neighbor just gave away hers a couple weeks ago. I see them on the shelves of nearly every 2nd hand store.

  • In-person attendance was up? How about TV viewership?

    • Bambino

Does closing the curtain lowering the volume watching in the basement count as protest?

      • Boreal

Only if it is in your mother’s basement.

      • If you’re a Nielsen family. 😉

My grandfather always watched the games with the TV volume off and the radio on because he preferred the radio commentary better.

        • marshlc

I know of someone who watches sports on the Spanish or French language stations – not distracted by the inane babble of the announcers, but still hear the crowd noise and the crack of the bat or slap of the puck, which you don’t get if you just turn the sound off.

    • Chucktech

They think that if they don’t show up at a game but just watch it on teevee they’re boycotting the NFL.

If you want to know where the popularity of football is going, even The Ohio State University:

Football fans could see lower football season ticket prices in 2018
    https://news.osu.edu/news/2017/10/31/news-season-ticket-prices-in-2018/

Just a few years ago, all games would be sold out/scalped for the currently ranked #8 in the nation university football team. This is astounding in Columbus OH and has more to do with CTE than “taking a knee.”

  • clay

Ha Ha. The leading Philadelphia Eagles were even in their bye week, so the total numbers should have shown a small dip, anyway!

“Will the NFL feel it, do you think? Or will it be a version of that old joke about the 4 worst words to hear during sex, “Is it in yet?””

    • Todd20036

It’s not cheap to go to an NFL game. The people who might have boycotted it couldn’t afford to go anyway.
So what are they going to do, not watch it on TV?
It’s not like they’ll stop using the products that have commercials on during the game. THe haters would have to boycott all those products too for an NFL boycott to really work.

My mother had the 49er/Giants game at Levi’s stadium on yesterday when I stopped by. Looked like a lot of empty seats, especially on the sunny side of the stadium where people broil on even a mildly warm day. The 49ers dismal 0-9 season is responsible for the empty seats, not Kap or kneeling players. It’s been reported that season ticket holders are staying away in droves and some tickets have been resold as low as $14.

Reminds me of the preacher who boycotted Starbucks by buying a cup of coffee there and dumped it out.

    • Chucktech

haw haw done told starebocks lol

    • Uncle Mark

That’s the same damned preacher, who also said his name was “Merry Christmas,” so the Starbucks barista had to say it when he called out his name. How utterly childish, vain, and self-promoting, as this HAD to video’d and loaded on YouTube.

In essence, the dumbass, hypocrite paid $4-5 to hear some kid shout Merry Christmas…instead of making a Merry Christmas for people in need, who could have actually benefited from that money.

      • Mikey

oh to have been that barista…
“Miss Mary! I have a coffee for Mary? Miss Mary Krimas? Am I pronouncing that right?”

It’s not as commonly known now as it once was. There was a time when the “black national anthem” was taught and widely sung by black people in churches and schools.

      • gaycuckhubby

        Love it!!!

        • Reality.Bites

There were of course afternoon games, and the ratings for those will come later.

There’s a bit of a clue though in how the overrun affected ratings on Fox:

FOX’s Sunday shows were all up week to week, benefitting from the national late-afternoon NFL game running into primetime. They were also up, however, from the last NFL-assisted Sunday.

Seems likely the NFL game was also up from the last one, but it’s technically possible it wasn’t.

      • Vinnie NYC

At first I read it as “Sugar Night Football” I don’t know what on earth happened there.

Though I heard something about football ratings having been suffering cause people can watch on their iphones and other devices.

The GOP is quickly driving the US to banana republic status, which is another way of saying, a primitive social, cultural, political and economic system marked by anti-democracy, unaccountability, corruption, anti-intellectualism and general dysfunction–which is another way of saying that the right-wingers are trying to make the outer world look like their inner world.

      • McSwagg

“Theocratic oligarchy” is much easier to type than all that and it means the same thing.

“Democrats have strongly criticized the nomination of Mr. Talley, a 36-year-old who has never tried a case
and who received a rare “not qualified” rating from the American Bar

Committee on Thursday on a party-line vote.”

I love how their little brains work. “I’m gonna stay home on Sunday like always, but this time I’m not even gonna sit on my fat ass watching football. This time I’m JUST gonna sit on my ass! That’ll teach them libtards!”

  • As if right-wingers were really going to boycott football. Girl, please. This reminds me of the Southern Baptist boycott of Disney. That one didn’t work either. Threats are meaningless if you don’t follow through.

  • Dk

the truth is, NFL tickets are expensive and the boycotters can’t afford them, much less the coffee machines they seem intent on smashing. what a joke

NFL Attendance Rises Slightly Despite Boycott

The NFL should encourage them to boycott more.

  • Happy_Housewife

I knew it. Stupid people have very few things in their life, and football is one of them. There’s no way a boycott would work.
