Right Wingers To Stage Mass NFL Boycott Today

A Facebook group with 200,000 members has called on its followers to boycott the NFL today. The mass boycott was scheduled to coincide with Veterans Day weekend.

Fox News reports:

“We will be not be watching or listening to NFL games on November 12th in solidarity with veterans around the country, as football players have continued to disrespect the national anthem, the American flag, and everything our nation stands for,” it says on the Boycott The NFL Facebook page.

The issue was thrust back into the spotlight in September when President Donald Trump said NFL owners should fire any “son of a b****” who doesn’t respect the anthem and flag. He has gone on to call the demonstrations disrespectful and blamed them for the NFL’s lower ratings and attendance.

  • bkmn

Bet this goes as well as NOM’s march for marriage.

  • FAEN

Because right wing boycotts work so well lol.

  • BearEyes

I doubt they’ll ever figure out it’s a protest against injustice – not the flag or song.
Besides, they’ll just watch a recorded version on the 13th anyway.

    • FAEN

Well to them the injustice is when minorities don’t shut up and do what they’re told.

  • FAEN

Hey right wingers-how’s that Apple boycott working for you? Yeah that’s what I thought you dense motherfuckers.

    • TrueWords

      or Google, Microsoft or Amazon…yeah…

      • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

Or Disney, General Mills, Starbucks, Target…

      • FAEN

        Thank you matey.

    • Todd20036

Exactly. I don’t think the NFL is quaking in its boots.

Lets see the season ticket holders tear up their tickets, then the NFL will take notice.

      Not going to happen.

And by the way, NFL, where is Kirkpatrick?

      • FAEN

The professional martyrs won’t do shit.

Honestly, the way Kirkpatrick has been treated I hope viewership keeps declining.

      • Scott MB

Wouldn’t matter, the tickets are paid for so the holder is out the money. If they don’t pay for next years tickets then they lose their spot and have to wait for one to open back up. NFL could give a fuck, they have their money and another person to pay it next year.

  • lymis

Has anybody actually checked with real veterans about this? Most of us support free speech.

    • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

All of us took an oath to uphold the Constitution. And most of us know that this kneeling in protest is guaranteed, so wtf is up with these right-wing idiots who not only don’t seem to know that, but are also reinterpreting the reason players are kneeling. (it’s not disrespect for the flag, or veterans, or that unsingable National Anthem.)

      • samcollins

I loath these people that claim to speak for me but are to chickenshit (can I say that on here?) to sign up and put on the uniform I wore for 24 years!!!

        • olandp

          Fuck no!

          • David Walker

I’ve fuckin’ given the fuck up. It’s too fuckin’ handy, tends to express exactly how the fuck I feel, and most people understand my fucking position on things. It takes fuckin’ finesse to use it well, though.

          • JackFknTwist

Fuck finesse. I use bad language for emphasis and because it tickles me that it is derived from Anglo Saxon.

          • Phillip in L.A.

In my usage, “motherfuck(*)” now becomes a general emphasizer, where (*) is used as in Boolean logic, and thus able to replace almost any part of speech

          • David L. Caster

            A Kleene star.

          • Phillip in L.A.

Did not know they had a specific name, so thanks for educating me!

          • David L. Caster

Welcome of course. I always thought of it as a symbol for a Kleene Closure and that was what I called it in logic.

          • Phillip in L.A.

In some Boolean [legal] searches, as you probably know, it can be used anywhere in a word (i.e., not just as closure)

          • David L. Caster

The symbol is used in a lot of similar contexts, particularly in regular expressions and formal grammar specifications. The abuse of notation is generally accepted in nerd circles to mean zero or more of something.

Interesting observation–I didn’t know it was regional! (But come to think of it, when I lived in CT and NY–many years ago–I never spoke like this, either!) Maybe it is temporal, too?

          • Grumpy Old Man

          • Grumpy Old Man

        • Benjamin Eugene NElson

My friend is 30 years old, served two combat tours in Afghanastan. He literally leftt one of his balls in the Middle East. And I’m not talking about toys.

He has seizures from the brain scarring from the IEDs. (yes plural) And he gets screwed over by the VA because he’s still a kid.

I respect the soldiers as individuals. But I do not respect the Army and what they have done to someone I care for.

I do not mean disrespect to you personally. (trying to make the clear.) But it seems to me that the Armed Forces see certain people as expendable. and that’s just wrong.

          • Phillip in L.A.

Thank you for posting the story about your friend, Benjamin Eugene NElson, and thank you for your service!

          • Benjamin Eugene NElson

I did not serve. i will not pretend to have that valor.

But I will say that I’m grateful that I had that choice.

Even if I think that Starship Troopers had the right idea in making people serve before they coud vote sometimees.

          • Phillip in L.A.

The screenwriters of “Starship Troopers” might have gotten that idea from Israel’s experience with their armed forces. It does seem like a good idea!

          • Benjamin Eugene NElson

You do know it was a book first, right?

            Admitedly nothing like the movie…

          • Phillip in L.A.

Wasn’t it a graphic novel? I know, I know, search engines are my friend….

          • Steve Teeter

It started out as a book by Robert Heinlein, in 1959.

          • Phillip in L.A.

That’s right! Now that you’ve reminded me, I recall actually reading it. As someone else pointed out, the movie deviated quite liberally from Mr Heinlein’s work, perhaps fortuitously.

          • Benjamin Eugene NElson

the book was first written in the 30s…

          • ColdCountry

The military could not send anyone into combat if they did not have the concept of “acceptable loss.” It sucks. Yes, I think we need to have a military, and I certainly respect those who choose to serve, but I think our government’s care of those who do choose, also sucks. I hope your friend finds ways, and the care, to cope and thrive.

          • Benjamin Eugene NElson

It’s easy to see losses as acceptable when they happen to someone else. That was my point.

He’s doing better than he was when he irst got home a ew years back.

          • ColdCountry

I hope he continues to improve.

          • Benjamin Eugene NElson

He never will be 100%. Between the brain scarring and what I’m pretty sure is PTSD he’s too macho to take care of he will never be the same.

            But hs is doing better.

          • JackFknTwist

You make a good point. The “industrial/military complex ” has become too much a part of the economic health of the nation.

And I for one do not worship at the shrine of military service.

      • Librarykid

It’s more ignorance and hate masquerading as patriotism.

      • astroworf

I’m sure the skin color of the players taking a knee has nothing to do with it.

        • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

          (snort) Absolutely not!!!

        • David Walker

Oh, astroworf. How can you even think such a thing?

        • Benjamin Eugene NElson

Not all of them are black you racist!

          (Joking)

      • Steverino

Indeed, and last time I looked, both the flag and the anthem are not even mentioned in the Constitution.

But this attitude is typical of right-wingers: long on symbolism, but short on the substance that should underpin the meaning of the symbols.

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Kinda like they can worship and deify an unborn cluster of cells but could give a rats ass about the child when its actually born. forget the mother all together, shes merely a fetus incubator

          • FAEN

            Xtians-it’s how they judge.

        • don

Funny how many of these same reichwingers had ‘other priorities’ when it came time to sign up for the war of the day…

      • teedofftaxpayer

It’s a “rallying cry” for Trump to drum up supporters since he’s lost so many. Otherwise he would have made a big deal about it last year when he ran for office. When he made his “big deal” about it there was only a handful of players doing it. Now because of his big mouth many more are doing it and more are supporting them.

        • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

And more people are beginning to realize that the Trumpista version is completely false. That’s a Good Thing.

      • Willys41

I hear a lot about the oath to “uphold the constitution” from vets and a lot of the time I wish that included learning what the constitution and Bill of Rights actually means rather than what a lot of right-wing extremists wish it means.

        • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

Right? I have a little booklet here that the teabillies were giving out last decade. It’s a sort of cherry-picked Readers’ Digest version of the Constitution.

          • David Walker

I hope it has lots of pictures.

          • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

If it did, it’d be a Chick tract!

      • Benjamin Eugene NElson

It’s simple. They want a villian so they choose to beleive in them. They don’t question what Trump tells them, they don’t question what others tell them. It feels good to be rightous… even if your baring false witness.

      • WitlessProtection

It’s a way to controversialize it and make money of course.

      • Kissmagrits

I feel the full weight of my oath of allegiance more now than I did when I enlisted at eighteen. So, the next question for these armchair patriots is “What did you do in the war, daddy?”.

Nothing, you say? Then sit back down in your La-Z-Boy and shut the fuck up! It seems Donald and Rush have been talkin’ out their ass, too.

      • Paul Modibe

RIGHT WINGERS ARE LIKE NO DEPOSIT, NO RETURNS BOTTLE, EMPTY, USELESS AND WORTHLESS.

      • Raising_Rlyeh

They worship imagery rather than meaning. They hold up the bible, flag, and national anthem as these sacred items that can never ever be “disrespected.”

      • CCleverly

Right wingnuts don’t understand the ‘Constitution’. They think it is when they have trouble moving their bowels.

    • Michael White

    • kaydenpat

Great point. Rightwingers have tried to co-opt the military to the point where average Americans would mistakenly believe that veterans are all hardcore Conservatives. Not true.

Veterans of the Bone Spur War.

        Not even close to true.

      So do most soldiers.

      But Nazis gotta Nazi

      • John30013

Given that the US military–at least in the enlisted ranks–is disproportionately served by people of color (compared to the US population as a whole), and those people know what kinds of discrimination exist in our society, I’d venture to say that most vets know exactly what the protests are about, and support them.

    • Willys41

Unfortunately, the vets who join right-wing racist groups that are opposed to everything America represents are the ones who get all the press.

But, hey, thanks for being a REAL American patriot.

    • Paula

This Vet approves of what the players are doing 100%. I served so people could express their opinions.

      • John30013

        Ditto!

          Thank you too.

        Thank you for serving.

      • Phillip in L.A.

Thank you for your service, Paula! I think I have thanked you before, but this weekend seems especially appropriate….

Today I will be going to the truly huge V.A. cemetery in L.A., to pay my respects to my father’s father, who is buried there.

    • don

Yup. It’s the usual suspects (pasty-white rightwing Fox-Watching oldfuckers and closet Nazis) trying to shut down the NFL…and it’s transparently obvious that were the kneeling players white, we wouldn’t be hearing about this.

This vet says to hell with those who would throw our First Amendment rights under the bus! I fought for the right to honor, but also if necessary, to burn the American flag if that’s what it takes to protest a tyrannical government-or a tyrannical CITIZENRY!

      • Kim Watson

To claim that they are being deprived of “free speech” is a colossal display of absolute ignorance.

These brats are not being deprived of their right to express themselves,…. they are suffering the public consequences of doing so. Big difference you fool.

If they cannot stand the heat, then maybe they should get out of the kitchen.

For the perfect cup of coffee, always remember to run vinegar through the maker once a month!

    • WitlessProtection

I am a Veteran and I approve this message.

    • RoverSerton

As a veteran, I served so people would have constitutional rights. I lost some (being able to tell my boss to fluff off, among others) but it was to allow others. I STRONGLY believe if someone burns the flag, it should count against them being citizen of the year! /s. Taking a knee has been commandeered to be against the flag (by the idiot Trump) from what it was originally meant to be against police abuse. I sit at nascar races for the prayer, but I do stand for the flag. Sit if you wish.

    • LarryChemEngr

Peacefully protesting is quintessentially American and fully protected by our Constitution. Rightwingers want to silence Black protesters but have no problem with the Richard Spencers and White Supremacists of the world exercising their hate speech rights.

      • FAEN

Ever notice how dissent is a dirty word when Republicans are in charge?

        • David Walker

But of course. They’re in charge. Why would anyone be upset about that?

        • kaydenpat

Yep. It’s ok for them to dissent and protest Democratic presidents though.

    • Todd

Yes, shooting unarmed black people is OK but saying, “Hey, stop doing that!” Is an affront to the flag.

      • FAEN

And wearing too tight American flag undies where your ass hangs out(not in the hot way)is fine too. But take a knee…that is forbidden and unpatriotic.

        • /

Trevor Noah did a good segment on the Daily Show:
There is never a right time or place or way for black people to protest, unless it’s in their homes quietly when nobody is watching.

          • prixator

And that home better not be close to theirs!

      • Steverino

Let’s be blunt: unarmed black people aren’t being shot by the police, they are being executed.

  • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

“… in solidarity with veterans around the country…”

But this issue has NOTHING TO DO WITH VETERANS!

    • kaydenpat

      Just another lie by Rightwingers.

LOL how many of them have Nielsen devices? Because without that it doesn’t matter if you don’t watch.

    • Steverino

And those who do watch sit on their fat asses swilling beer and noshing nachos during the playing of the anthem, anyway.

If you look at the demographic questions at the top of page 3, it shows 53% of respondents are 65 or older. That hardly seems representative of the electorate.

I would expect an older group to skew toward the GOP, but since it seems like it is more about people who would be swilling to talk to a pollster, it may well be people who are more social, and likely democratic.

NFL ratings are down, so they have a good chance of being able to claim success.

On the other hand, weather has turn colder this weekend in large parts of the country and perhaps more people will be staying home and watching TV

      • PickyPecker

It’s snowy and cold here today. The Bears are playing the Packers at noon CST, so….I’d say the only ‘going out’ would be to get alcohol and snacks. (not for me….I don’t enjoy sportsball)

Today I googled supermarkets with indoor parking.

  • SoCalGal20

Speaking of boycotts Russian bots are now trying to get BoycottKeurig to trend on twitter because Keurig announced they were going to stop advertising on Fox due to Hannity’s grossness. So, if you have a Keurig it might be time to stock up on some new Keurig pods or if you don’t have Keurig maybe send them a supportive note or something.

    https://twitter.com/krassenstein/status/929718428901847042

    • AlternativeQuacks

LOL. So many of these things are “Does Not Apply” for me. I’ve never owned a Keurig or any of those coffee-in-a-plastic-cup machines. The first time I saw one of those, I thought. “This is the worst idea ever environmentally.” I was surprised to see it take off – I thought it would go the way of the pet rock and the bedazzler.

      • SoCalGal20

There are actually third party reusable pods you can buy. Then you use whatever coffee or tea you want. But yeah, environmentally a nightmare if you buy pods. Lots of businesses of course like them because people can make a single cup of coffee (or other hot beverage) of their choosing.

        • Bambino

I did that too but just does not taste as concentrated. Unless you invest in one of those mega watts coffee machine that produce lava temperature water, the k-cup coffee is average at best.

          • SoCalGal20

Well, yeah, not saying it’s going to be good. But at least you are adding more trash to the environment with disposable K cups.

        • Reality.Bites

There are also pods sold that are 100% compostable.

          • SoCalGal20

Oh that’s good. I hadn’t looked into it that much since I don’t have one and we don’t have one at work, either.

But a planet-sized pain in the butt for those of us who drink a lot of coffee nevertheless.

      • Bambino

I made the mistake of getting one. The coffee is just meh. It’s more for those who are on the run every morning. I am staying with French Press and the good old over the stove Italian Expresso pot.

      • cleos_mom

Sometime when you’re in a supermarket, jot down the price and number of ounces in a bag of coffee; ditto its single-serving counterpart.

Done it more than once and calculated the prices per pound — with a little help from Excel. The cheapest I’ve found is $9.50 for bagged, $22 for single-serving.

There truly is a sucker born every second.

    • Bluto

Good for Keurig, although instant coffee is still the grossest thing since kim kardashian.

  • GayOldLady

Hahahahahaha!!!! Anyone who’s ever been to an NFL Game in person knows that before every game the NFL honors our Armed Forces by bringing on Armed Forces Honor Guard, unfurling the flag and playing the National Anthem. As a person who’s attended many NFL games I can say that many in the crowd do not stand, many are walking up and down the aisles during the anthem, many are standing in the concourse drinking beer during the anthem, many are in the restrooms during the anthem, many are at the concession stands waiting in line for beer and hotdogs during the anthem. There is no correct way to behave at an NFL game during the National anthem and anyone who’s ever been to an NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB games knows it.

Authoritarianism, religious fundamentalism, and the human prefrontal cortex
          https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22612576

          “Abstract
          OBJECTIVE:
The psychological processes of doubting and skepticism have recently become topics of neuroscientific investigation. In this context, we developed the False Tagging Theory, a neurobiological model of the belief and doubt process, which proposes that the prefrontal cortex is critical for normative doubt regarding properly comprehended cognitive representations. Here, we put our theory to an empirical test, hypothesizing that patients with prefrontal cortex damage would have a doubt deficit that would manifest as higher authoritarianism and religious fundamentalism.
          METHOD:
Ten patients with bilateral damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), 10 patients with damage to areas outside the vmPFC, and 16 medical comparison patients, who experienced life-threatening (but non-neurological) medical events, completed a series of scales measuring authoritarianism, religious fundamentalism, and specific religious beliefs.
          RESULTS:
vmPFC patients reported significantly higher authoritarianism and religious fundamentalism than the other groups. The degrees of authoritarianism and religious fundamentalism in the vmPFC group were significantly higher than normative values, as well; by contrast, the comparison groups did not differ from normative values. Moreover, vmPFC patients reported increased specific religious beliefs after brain injury.
          CONCLUSIONS:
The findings support the False Tagging Theory and suggest that the vmPFC is critical for psychological doubt and resistance to authoritarian persuasion.”

And Francis Scott Key re-wrote the lyrics, to celebrate a war in which Congress picked a fight with Britain while Britain was trying to stop the bloody dictator Bonaparte from overrunning Europe, and the U.S. started by invading Canada and ended up defending Baltimore. Not a very glorious game when you end up on your own five-yard line due to your ineptitude.

(That’s how we got to the siege of Ft. McHenry. Rockets’ red glare and all that.)

Key’s son Philip Barton Key was shot and killed in Lafayette Park in Washington in 1859 by Rep. Daniel Sickles, who objected to Key’s attentions to Mrs. Sickles. Mr. Sickles got off in the first temporary-insanity defense, and would go on to be a Union Army general and lose his leg — and the entire III Army Corps — at Gettysburg.

      • Ben in Oakland

        Jesus will return.

        • MBear

          Thats a mistranslation.

          He’ll “come again”.
Big diff if you consider the prev chapter is the beginning of the orgy scene

          • Ben in Oakland

Is that Jesus the savior, or Hey-soos, my Puerto Rican pool boy?

      • Adam King

        Of even a demi-tittle?

      • Treant

I don’t have any experience evaluating tittles, so I wouldn’t know…and probably won’t care about the tittles.

  • j.martindale

“Disrespect the national anthem, the American flag, and everything our nation stands for.” For ME, the nation is NOT about emblems and symbols, as these people suggest. Empty shows of patriotism are irrelevant. Men and women who sacrificed for their country are relevant. The Bill of Rights are particularly relevant. Standing, sitting and singing at baseball and football games is posturing. I don’t assume that an athlete who challenges the country’s commitment to the standards of equality are disrespecting what I want the country to stand for.

  • Terance Greene

I am a vet and I totally support the protest!

    • Phillip in L.A.

Thank you for your service, Terance Greeen!

  • Ben in Oakland

If you were in solidarity with veterans, the va would be fully funded and it’s decades old problems fixed.

    • Phillip in L.A.

Agree with your sentiment, Ben in Oakland! But the job of funding is Congress’s alone

  • ColdCountry

    This will be huge.
    /s, in case anyone wondered….

  • Adam King

How completely idiotic. First they miss the point altogether, then they even miss the made-up racist point.

    • OCW

thank you — succinctly and correctly stated!

  • Scott MB

So how many of these people, when watching any sporting event on TV or in a bar, stand and put their hand over their heart when the national anthem starts? I am willing to bet non. So aren’t they being hypocritical by demanding others do what they don’t do. Just because your not at the live event doesn’t negate the fact that they should be doing what they complain others are not doing.

This fake patriotism is getting pathetic. Vets faught for the right to free speech. The anthem, flag and other symbols are meaningless without Constutional guarantees and freedoms. These are things that do not require respect and forced respect is not respect.

If these fake patriots are not willing to stand in there home or where ever they are watching a sporting event when the anthem plays, then they should be mocked and scorned excessively!

    • Phillip in L.A.

      Nice comment, Scott MB!

      (P.S. Last ¶, “stand in ^theretheir home)

      • Homo Erectus

I’d stop after “nice comment” when it was in fact a nice comment.

    • BJORN RAGNVALDR

Correct, Scott. Their concern though, is not the flag, the anthem or anything patriotic. It’s about uppity niggras protesting police brutality against people they feel deserved it. If not what they were supposedly killed for by the police, well, then, for something. They hate to tune in and be reminded that their white privileged, racist, homophobic, misogynistic life they love, is no lnger being allowed to go without condemnation. They feel persecuted that their way of life is being threatened as it well should be.

  • JWC

    knock yourselves Buckos

They don’t respect the veterans. Veterans that are from Mexico are being deported back to Mexico. They don’t respect black veterans either, and the black football players are nothing but gladiators to them who are disposable.

Yes, and instead of getting pie-eyed on Old Mildew in front of the flat screen with their friends they will spend the day reading to their children and reflecting on the sacrifice of our national heroes.

Too bad they won’t be doing anything more constructive with their supposed free time like exercising, eating better food or reading stuff that’s not half-assed conspiracy theories and pablum pandering to their need to feel superior.

But it’s good that these things shorten their lifespan and reduce the number of votes they’ll be making for President.

If you started drinking early today, it’s OK to admit it. No one here will judge you.

      • Mike

Your comment makes perfect sense. Really. Stay in school!

  • Kim Watson

I am anything but a right winger and I fully support the boycott.
When the pampered brats stop disrespecting our: flag, anthem and country I will start watching again. Until then I hope that the long term impact costs them and the owners,….. MILLIONS.

    • Treant

(checking comment history)…you’re a fucking right winger, anti-Hillary, gun-loving, “Dimocrat” hating piece of shit who’d suck Dumpy’s tiny peen if it got you ten bucks.

      Enjoy your block, asswipe.

    • MBear

Shaving your legs with hair conditioner instead of soap makes them soft and smooth. Just apply, shave, and rinse.

      • Phillip in L.A.

One could also maybe use your ‘conditioner’ method to shave some other areas, too, right?

      • cleos_mom

Waxing is even better — not all the hair grows back and eventually it’s gone. You can even get rid of a “unibrow” that way but don’t try to do it yourself (hot wax close to the eyes and all that).

Those “other areas”, never was brave enough for that.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

How strange that so many claim they’re not something then go on to prove that they are.

    • prixator

Your disqus profile is not private, so don’t lie about not being a right winger. I just had to read a dozen of your latest comments to see that. MAGA, right?

  • Snarkaholic

When their friends at work start discussing the game, excitedly, the bigots, feeling both left out and deprived, will go right back to watching again.

    • Treant

Guiltily, they’ll admit they watched anyway. Bigots have no self-control. Look how many are obese, less than perfect with their hygiene, and can’t control what spews out of their pie holes.

      • Phillip in L.A.

That is an interesting comment, Treant, which has application to some real-life fools I am currently dealing with.

When I respond coolly and professionally to them in business letters and e-mails, they send back these rambling, ranting screeds full of irrelevant, but potentially damaging statements. I cannot believe the admissions they make (unknowingly, apparently)! They are just digging a deeper hole for themselves, but they don’t have a clue….

  • canoebum

Perhaps these outraged sports fans should spend their normal game time reading the Constitution, especially the part that says “No person shall be…deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of the law”. Perhaps on reflection, they might realize that the cops can’t just shoot whoever they want, anytime they want, on the flimsiest of excuses. If that was not happening all over the country, there would be no need for the protest they find so offensive.

  • Kim Watson

The numbers do not lie. The NFL is taking a giant financial hit and the owners know it.

Their bigger problem is that they do not know how to get their brats under control without being call racists. Once the brats see their pool of bucks for contracts shrink they will get off of their asses and start complaining about pay cuts. lol

    • Reality.Bites

      And blocked.

      Or if you prefer, boycotted.

The ‘numbers’ don’t correspond to your right-wing racist complaining, either.

    • Homo Erectus

The NFL, like NASCAR is taking a hit because young people don’t watch. The average age of NFL viewers is around 60 years old.

  • ClevelandJim

So Bubba says he’s not gonna watch his football today…riiiiiiiiiight.

  • Mark Abbott

I somehow felt myself compelled to turn the tv on today and leave it on a channel with football.

  • David

Well whoop dee doo for the fuck-tards.

  • Lars Littlefield

I’m so conflicted. I support the players “taking a knee” protest. But I sure as hell am not going to start watching American football on TV (or any other sport) just to support them.

    • If you have a TV, just turn it on, tune it to an NFL game, put it on mute and leave the room.

      I haven’t watched a football game since around 1983, but I’m tempted.

      • Lars Littlefield

The problem is I’m not interested in supporting the NFL. Never have. Never will. I hate football. Whenever I turn on the TV to just keep it on, I tune it to the Dog Channel. It’s a cable channel with programming exclusively for dogs. Our Tucker will sit in front of the TV and stare for hours. Whenever we leave him home we turn on the TV to give the impression some one is home and to keep him entertained.

        • Phillip in L.A.

I do not support the NFL either, and there is no way in hell I will watch a second of today’s sportsball pageant.

I have two cousins who play in the NFL, mainly to fulfill their loser father’s fantasy of being a sportsball celebrity. I feel so sorry for them–even though they are pulling down salaries in the high six-digit range–because they are going to probably end up with terribly disabling brain injuries before they reach the age of 35.

  • Halou

“football players have continued to disrespect …. everything our nation stands for,”

And what a nation it is.
One that demands people stand up for the rejection of civil rights, one that votes alongside the likes of Saudi Arabia on LGBT issues at the UN. A nation that rejects the work of it’s own intelligence agencies in favour of the word of a foreign tyrant and human rights abuser. I’d rather stay seated.

  • AdamTh

Could be some of them are protesting being called a son of a bitch — by an electoral aberration…

    • Reality.Bites

There are/will be games today on NBC and CBS you could watch instead. Possibly other channels.

  • aagold76 .

I HATE football- and would love to see it go under- BUT- NOT like this! Dammit- I have to watch now.

  • andrew

I don’t like the NFL players protest and I don’t like the protest of the protest. None of it accomplishes anything meaningful. It is all a needless distraction and just causes all kinds of emotional knee jerk reactions which are counter productive to our nation dealing with it’s problems.

    • jpinphx

so your answer is to do and say nothing?

      • andrew

No. I would suggest we all get active in our communities and actually do the work of improving things and not just making symbolic gestures. I am not saying that all these folks aren’t free to do what they want. I am saying that IMO, these protests achieve almost nothing constructive.

        • stevenj

Raising the national conscience about this issue has been already been achieved by kneeling football players. It has become part of the national dialogue. trump, some of the NFL owners, racists would like these players silenced. (you know, hurts the bottom line, disrespects the flag and the military). Institutionalized racism is unfortunately a huge problem in this country (and not just in police depts from coast to coast). Even in the most progressive areas of the country where we have been active in our communities for decades this happens too frequently. A staggering out of it Mario Woods shot 20 times while surrounded by SF cops – while a city bus with passengers watched:

I completely fail to understand how genuflecting is a sign of
disrespect. Church goers, as part of their services, show respect to God
by genuflecting all during those services. If it’s good enough for God,
why the hullabaloo over doing it during the playing of the National
Anthem? Donnie decided to make an issue of this solely to steer the
collective brain of his loyalists to crying about ‘disrespect to our
flag, military, and first responders’. He threw in the military and
first responders to make his complaint seem legitimate. In doing so,
they wouldn’t have to hear anything about Russia or collusion with
Russia. That way, to his limited thinking, the Russia investigation
would somehow go away. He just can’t grasp the fact that such an
investigation now has to be carried out to its end.

  • 2guysnamedjoe

The NFL will soon be brought to its financial knees, joining the ranks of right-wing boycott targets such as the now-defunct Disney Corporation, Starbucks, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Google, Apple, and Microsoft. Roger Goodell is pissing his pants.

    • Henry Auvil

Yeah, I’m sure they’re quaking in their off-shore tax havens and pissing their Brioni loafers because a gaggle of knuckle-dragging cretins turned over to Fox today instead of watching football.

  • Henry Auvil

This reminds me of how anti-warming wingnuts respond to Earth Day by turning on everything in their houses to “counter-act” the effort of conservationists. They get to feel stupidly smug about themselves while running up their own electric bills.

    • 2guysnamedjoe

Or buying Starbucks lattes to dump them in protest.

  • JAKvirginia

Yeah, Donnie? But I’m sure the NFL still gets higher approval ratings than you. Pity.

Let’s see just how effective the Right-Wing protests have been … hmmm … Disneyland had to close, Starbucks went under, Target had to install bathroom police …am I forgetting anything? …
I’m not sure it would take a protest to really drain the NFL … I read today that Goodall seems to want to do that himself … 60 million annual salary, private jet for life, and health insurance for his family for life … SMH

  • netxtown

Because of my super powers – it was quite the relief for all the haters to tune out the NFL today. I mean, I wasn’t going to watch anyway, but if I had, It would have been much nicer without all their hate. Granted it didn’t feel any different, so I surmise my relief was not achieved based on fact, but that’s how the haters swing – so I can do it that way if i want to.

It says much about America that so many are obsessed with an inexplicable “game” in which young men, (increasingly minority), get paid a lot of money to destroy their brains and bodies at a young age. Gladiators for a more modern, (but no more evolved) time. I actually like watching sports (BBall, baseball, soccer, track), but American football is barbaric idiocy.
