Gossip Columnist Liz Smith Dies At 94 [VIDEO]

The New York Times reports:

Liz Smith, the longtime queen of New York’s tabloid gossip columns, who for more than three decades chronicled little triumphs and trespasses in the soap-opera lives of the rich, the famous and the merely beautiful, died on Sunday at her home in Manhattan. She was 94. Her friend and literary agent, Joni Evans, confirmed her death.

From hardscrabble nights writing snippets for a Hearst newspaper in the 1950s to golden afternoons at Le Cirque with Sinatra or Hepburn and tête-à-tête dinners with Madonna to gather material for columns that ran six days a week, Ms. Smith captivated millions with her tattletale chitchat and, over time, ascended to fame and wealth that rivaled those of the celebrities she covered.

Smith was openly bisexual, married twice to men in the 1940s and 1950s, and lived for many years with archeologist Iris Love. She also was a famed fundraiser, delivering millions of dollars for the AIDS charity amFAR. As you’ll see in the clip below, her public feuding with Donald Trump was the stuff of New York City’s tabloids for decades.

    aww.

  • gaycuckhubby

I was never a reader. Just know her from reputation. Her work seemed complicated

    • Sashineb

I didn’t read her column that much, either, but I remember one time when she got a very snappy response from Aretha Franklin. https://goo.gl/4HgT6m

      • johncAtl

You don’t mess with a queen (of soul).

      • Stuart ArtFart

Aretha Franklin is just a mouth black beeyotch. Dime a dozen.

I bet you are fun at parties.

Congratulations! You said something obnoxious, stupid and blatantly false in order to get a reaction. Here’s your Ann Coulter Wannabee Award.

Thank you…and once again, you got me chair dancing. 🙂 And it ain’t pretty. A few years ago I was doing that and my teen aged step daughter looked at me (and completely deadpan said): Just stop.

I was crushed. 🙂 (not really)

          Shameful. Get a life.

      • Lars Littlefield

        Bitch.

  • Leo

OT. The comments on Towleroad in response to Heather Unruh’s press conference on Spacey are beyond abhorrent. I really hope it wasn’t many of you – I recognized a few visitors from here but not many. I realized why I don’t go there much anymore.

    • Lazycrockett

There is a lot of sad people in the comment section over there. No matter what you say someone will come along and try to shit on it.

      • Lazycrockett

Its almost as worse as Queerty.

        • Leo

Queerty’s commenters at least admit they’re trolling like datalounge. Towleroad’s just been infested by spite and nihilism the last few years. It’s kind of overwhelming.

          • Joseph Miceli

The guys and gals are great over hear. Really, I’ve loved it here for years…just don’t say one thing. It turns everyone…no matter what side of the controversy they’re on…into instant assholes. It rhymes with “Sternie Standers.”

          • Joe in PA

LOL…you just HAD to go there Joseph…just had to go there.

(maybe it’s late and people are tired) 🙂

          • Joseph Miceli

Ha! I didn’t go there. I never said Varney Vanders. Not once.

      • Westcoast88

The comments here are often not a lot better. I don’t know why I torture myself looking for intelligent discussion here or on Towleroad. Or on topic comments. Just my opinion.

        • Leo

A bit of trolls and bitterness here too, I agree, honestly. It’s an internet comment section which is de facto never a place technically for intelligent discussion although many may try, imo. I just personally think it hasn’t reached Towleroad’s level yet. There’s moments and it may permanently in the future. Hopefully not.

          • whollyfool

I’ve never seen the downright nastiness here that I saw on TR. And i have not seen the anti-trans sentiments here that I saw on TR.

          • Leo

            Yeah, good point.

          • gaycuckhubby

            Agreed.

          • JCF

“not seen the anti-trans sentiments here”

Not since “erk-dway” (don’t want to Beetlejuice him back!) disappeared. That guy was excruciating.

          • Joseph Miceli

Most here are not antitrans. Either we get it or we are trying. Very rarely we see an anti trans troll pop up and they are hounded out.

          • whollyfool

To be clear, I’m not trans, just a supporter. I’m trying too.

            I just don’t like hate. 🙁

          • Ninja0980

This is nowhere close to TR.
Granted, the primary last year did fracture some friendships on here but for the most part, this is still one of the best LGBT websites for folks to come to.

          • Leo

I agree although (and this isn’t a bad thing at all) it does trend older (I’m a millennial) although I realize gay millennials don’t really visit sites like this anymore but gravitate towards Tumblr, etc. This gets mentions from big young icons with young internet followings like Tyler Oakley but maybe they just don’t comment…

          • whollyfool

Come for the naked pictures, stay for the wisdom. And the naked pictures. 🙂

          • gaycuckhubby

Whats the cutoff for millennials? 34 here

          • Leo

Different marketing firms wanted to take credit for their ‘name’ of the generation and the age range according to the Wiki page. The two guys that invented the term ‘millennial’ that ended up sticking say 1982-2004. You’re in that according to that. I’m 28, mid range.

          • gaycuckhubby

            Good to know!

          • Leo

Seems arbitrary but my interesting cultural conversation/experiment. After a few tests through the past few years in attempted conversation, etc., it’s very hard to relate to anyone beyond 4 years younger culturally and I realize the concept has some merit.

          • Dicky

I think that generations became a failed population tag as soon as prepubescent marketing became a thing. The high speed and degree of segregation of society definitely does not help in making a generation an actual cohort either.

          • Leo

That speed and degree accelerating in the internet era. Automation increases, people are panicking and resorting to tribalism. The cultural gap/sheer disconnect between late millennials and baby boomers seems so extreme now.

          • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

            You’re probably in.

          • BobSF_94117

            1000. Frankly, I think it’s wildly optimistic.

          • Tread

            We’re Xennials, apparently. 36 here.

          • Ernest Endevor

            14.

          • SoCalGal20

            I’m not a Millennial but I’m in my 40s.

The nice thing about here is that if somebody really bothers you, you do have the option of blocking them. That alone makes it better than Towleroad. It’s really sad how the comment section at Towleroad became completely overrun by trolls. The comment section there used to be decent.

          • Joseph Miceli

LOL, yeah…just don’t say his name three times in the mirror…Sternie Standers….Sternie Standers…….

        • gaycuckhubby

My politics and general views don’t line up perfectly with lots of people here. But I’ve never been personally attacked or villified for sharing my opinions here.
          I think that’s the difference.

    • whollyfool

I came here from Towleroad for that reason.

      • zhera

        Me too, many years ago.

    • JCF

Can you briefly summarize: the presser, and the abhorrent reaction? I’d rather not go there (haven’t been there in years, probably), but I’m still not getting the gist of the story.

      • Leo

You can see the conference on YT. Reactions range: Why didn’t her son speak instead, why didn’t he enjoy it, she’s out for fame and money, why didn’t he walk away, why didn’t she speak sooner, I don’t believe her, fame whore, that’s not abuse.

That’s the surface. Vile excuses for human beings trying to get a rise. Don’t ever gauge humanity by internet comments, yeah I know, but, whew. sigh.

I met Unruh at a newscasters conference back in the mid 2000s when I lived in suburban Boston. One of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I won’t go into detail. This just, idk, hits hard.

        • JCF

          OK, got it. Thanks.

    • Jeffrey

Hmmm now I have to go see what that’s about…

    • Ninja0980

Towleroad became a cesspool akin to Breitbart, why I quit going there.

    • Moebym of the Returners

Used to visit Towleroad years back, but I gradually stopped because it started to make me feel uncomfortable. Glad my intuition was correct.

    • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

Not me. That site is a trainwreck of attention whores and dramatic messes.

    • BJORN RAGNVALDR

Yeah, TR’s comment section has some real pieces of work commenting. The one I recall is Fenrox or something like that, wow, that’s some batshitterry going on there.

Never a fan of gossip columns since they tend to be about 1) people I never heard of; or 2) people I don’t care about. That said, anyone who had a 27 year long public running feud in the NY tabloids with the Screaming Cheeto (since the time of the Ivana divorce) must be of sterling character.

My all time favorite Liz Smith anecdote that just happens to be
      about another Liz, Elizabeth Taylor*

”Elizabeth was a smoldering siren who lured helpless men away
from their wives, but she was also a bit of an oddball.” Liz Smith
recalled the time the star was invited to dinner by a wealthy admirer.
“Who is this person?” Elizabeth asked, insisting that she didn’t visit
people she did not know. But when told that the man liked to “dress
up in satin ball gowns and stick diamond tiaras over his bald spot,”
she had second thoughts.”Oh why he’s one of us then,” she said,
      “Of course I’ll go.”

      Investigation and Audit.

      • johncAtl

Yep, just as soon as the Democrats gain control of the White House and Congress. Until then nothing will happen.

      • BJORN RAGNVALDR

Can’t. Contract does not allow for them to be held accountable by the government. They can not be compelled to submit to audit or to supply work progress updates.

        • BobSF_94117

You can write whatever you want to into a contract, but that doesn’t mean it supersedes regulations and laws.

          • Todd20036

Aww man. You mean they don’t have to pay me with male prostitutes?

    • CanuckDon

Whitefish Energy is nothing but a fly-by-night temp agency with lucky connections to the White House.

      • JCF

…and if SecInt Zinke isn’t benefitting directly from it, you KNOW his hometown family&friends are!

    • Tom Mears

As a project manager for many years in a similar industry we typically marked up the actual employee pay rate somewhere between 75% and 150%. Benefits, taxes, insurance, overhead and other costs were rarely less than 50% above salary. Expenses like travel, meals, lodging, consumables, tools, safety equipment, etc were billed separately at cost plus a small percentage (typically 10-15%).

Keep in mind that for every guy working on a job site there were typically 1-2 in an office somewhere that could not be charged to the job, but we nevertheless had to get money for. At 75% we were not making much money. Those jobs were reserved where we were selling equipment manufactured by us where we would generate service work and spare parts sales for many years to come.

This said, 500% is nothing short of extortion. Even if travel and expenses were in this number it is still outrageous.

      • BobSF_94117

        1) These are not employees. They’re contract workers. No benefits.

        2) There is no staff back in the office. The company has TWO members. They contracted with companies which, in turn, contracted with individuals. Minimal overhead.

        3) Expenses are not included.

These guys thought they found a sweet spot. They were right. Let’s just hope there was some collusion involved, cuz then they’ll go to jail.

The egregious thing about all of this is that there are structures in place, agreements among utility companies, to respond in emergencies. They’re much less expensive than Whitefish, are proven in their capabilities, and were not used this time in PR.

On STT, there are hundreds and hundreds of linemen from around the country, working 20 days in a row with no time off, string wires and setting new poles (not in that order!).

        • netxtown

BobSF – I am glad to see you commenting on Whitefish. And now, with no drum roll – I have to say…

You were right (which means I was way wrong) about Whitefish. At the time, I thought maybe they could get in there and get the power restored for the people. But they didn’t, and their contract stunk to high hell.

Please forgive my previous shortsightedness and ignorant assumptions.

      • SoCalGal20

Travel and expenses were separate and also outrageous.

Back in the 1970s I had friends who were thrilled to have her mention them in one of her Friday columns. They bought extra copies of the newspaper, cut out the column and had them framed. I declined one as a gift. They thought me rude.

  • JCF

OT: I think the up-coming 60 Minutes story of sexual abuse of female gymnasts on the US Olympic Team, will be very revealing of the psychology of abuse victims (I mean, if OLYMPIANS in the 21st c. couldn’t speak up till years later, how the hell should anyone expect an Alabama PWT girl in the 1970s to?)

    • gaycuckhubby

Another example of systemic abuse. Seems like no istitution is left untouched

    • SoCalGal20

There’s been pervasive abuse of girls in gymnastics for years. The culture is practically a pedophile’s dream. And aside from sexual abuse there’s also been a lot of issues with psychologically and physically abusive coaches. And USA Gymnastics enabled it for years. I’m glad it’s getting more attention again.

I don’t like Keurig because of landfill issues. I’m glad they left Hannity, but I’m sticking w/ my good ol’ Melitta…

      • Sashineb

I use a French press … but if I use my Melitta, I have a permanent filter, so less for the landfill for either method.

        • Natty Enquirer

I gave up coffeemakers in 2008. Been using a plastic drip basket ever since and coffee has never tasted better.

          • Sashineb

That’s interesting. Have ever used (or had coffee made in) a vacuum system, with the two carafes? I hear they make excellent coffee, and even cheaper blends taste delicious (so I’m told.)

          • agcons

The coffee is indeed excellent; very similar to French press, but without the “chew”. I can’t verify how cheaper blends taste because I’m a special snowflake when it comes to coffee, but even lighter roasts (not a favourite of mine) have more flavour.

        • BJORN RAGNVALDR

I switched to pour over a year age. Love it.

          • Sashineb

Thanks for mentioning that. Now, what is the difference, really, between a pour-over and a manual Melitta method? Aren’t they both about the same? I use a permanent filter, so I don’t have a paper one to rinse with hot water beforehand, and I use a coffee scoop instead of weighing the coffee. Apart from that … ??

          • BJORN RAGNVALDR

Now that you have explained the Melitta method, of which I am not familiar, sounds just the same. I think the flavor is so much better. I was once once a cream and sugar coffee drinker but after tasting my pour over withou, I stopped both.

Edit: very good coffee is one pleasure I won’t skimp on.

          • Sashineb

OK, thanks. I’ve watched videos for pour-over, and I do pretty much the same thing for the manual Melitta, very slowly dribbling the water, etc.

          • TuuxKabin

Exactly. I like my coffee, like I like my dogs. Black and strong smelling.

I like my men, like I like my savings account — no penalty for early withdrawal.
            Sorry.

          • Lars Littlefield

Buy a cold brew system for about $34. No paper filter. No waste except grounds. And the liquor lasts up to 10 days in the fridge. You just pour fresh cold water over 12 oz of fresh ground beans and let it soak through overnight. Next morning you have a coffee liquor in a pyrex carafe. One shot of coffee liquor poured into a mug of water heated to boiling in the microwave and — voila! You have the best tasting coffee possible. Never bitter and tastes exactly the way coffee smells when being brewed.

        • Lars Littlefield

Those paper filters are excellent for additions to the compost pile with the grounds. I also take any leftover coffee straight from the carafe to water house plants. The thrive on stale coffee.

          • Sashineb

Coffee for house plants? I hadn’t heard of that before. I knew some like to use leftover tea, but the coffee is news to me.

          • zhera

Coffee grounds on the ground keeps snails and slugs away from plants.

          • Lars Littlefield

It was total dumb luck I discovered it. Most house plants prefer slightly acidic soil. I had a Dieffenbachia in my office and would always throw left over coffee into the planter, because I was too lazy to dispose of it properly.. I only drink black coffee, so no cream and sugar. After a couple of months that Dieffenbachia was more than just thriving. It started taking over my personal space. Its worked on every house plant I’ve owned since. You have to dig in the coffee grounds so they break down in the potting soil.

          • Sashineb

Thanks for the information. Reason I asked is because people were putting cold coffee on plants at the office, and they ended up dying. But I’m sure they had cream and/or sugar in the mixture.

          • Lars Littlefield

Cream and sugar cause fungus to take over and ruin everything.

          • Sashineb

That explains it. I remember the plants, soil, pots all were discarded because of an ungodly smell coming from the soil.

          • djcoastermark

            That was just Mrs. Folgers.

          • Sashineb

No doubt. I used to bring French Roast to the office. Everybody loved it, except for the boss. She declared, “democracy stinks” and she insisted that if we were going to use the “office” coffee machine, then we had to go back to Folgers, Maxwell House, Chase & Sanborn, etc. So I then brought in my small Melitta for personal use. Some of us used it with the French Roast, and the boss was happy with her cardboard.

          • Reality.Bites

How about stevia and almond milk?

          • Joe in PA

That reminds me…I’ve got to polish my birkenstocks.

          • Lars Littlefield

No. Don’t sneak anything in a potted plant except straight coffee. Even too much coffee can begin to get moldy. Always till the potting soil and also never over water.

          • djcoastermark

Beware the evil Diffenbachia , for it shall overtake. It’s good to have your own little shop of horrors.

          • djcoastermark

We do also bless the lawn with the grounds and filters. So much better than thoughts and prayers too !

          • Bluto

I use a French press & any leftovers get turned into iced coffee. The plants can find their own damn caffeine buzz.

          • Sashineb

          • TuuxKabin

Very visual. Easy to look at.

We cold brew 2 quarts of Sumatra every week except when it’s absolutely necessary to have two or three espresso. Then we crank up the $650+ copper machine that demands to be polished every week.

        • Sashineb

What type of machine is that? Sounds interesting, not that I would get it, at that price. Thanks.

          • Lars Littlefield

It’s a la Pavoni. I’ve had it for 17 years. I bought it in Spain for almost $700. In the US a new one now costs about $1,500 — more or less. It sure is pretty, though. 🙂

1965 Sunbeam electric percolator. I’m re-living my happy childhood. Beats what I have now.

        • Sashineb

I had my grandmother’s GE electric perc from the 50s, and now my sister has it. Still works like a charm. Fun to see the coffee hitting the glass part in the lid.

          • Joe in PA

When my mom passed away, we gave away her Pyrex percolator. Now we wished we still had it. Just for the coffee hitting the glass part. 🙂

          • Reality.Bites

Easy to find on Ebay. I had my grandmother’s and broke it through overheating. So I bought one to remind me of her.

          • Sashineb

I had one of those Pyrex ones, too, and it was my mother’s, as well. I gave it to my brother. The coffee hitting the glass bubble always reminded me of the old Maxwell House commercial.

I’m sorry, but *boiling coffee* through coffee is gross!

    • Fucking morons destroying an appliance for which they’ve already paid…

That said, I’m thinking about buying one, but if I do, I’m gonna get reusable filter things.

Up to now I’ve been using pour-through Melita, but every couple of years I like to give something new a try.

      • Lars Littlefield

Check out cold brew systems. They make THE best coffee. We’ve got a $34 Toddy Cold Brew. Bought through Amazon. Fab U Lous!

        • I’ve never had cold brew coffee, but I do have that french press I mentioned a bit above-thread. I’ve found a recipe that involves 2/3 cup grounds w/3 cups water to make concentrate. Then I guess I mix 1/2 concentrate with 1/2 boiling water?

Might as well give it a try.

      • Johnny Wyeknot

        Try a French press.

        • Did that already. Didn’t like it. Kept breaking presses until I got an all-steel one, which now gathers dust on a shelf.

          • Johnny Wyeknot

Maybe ground your beans to fine…

          • No, it’s just that most glass french-presses nowadays are made with incredibly cheap plastic parts. Wasn’t until I bought the steel one that it stopped. But after a couple years, I got bored and wanted to try something new.

Last 3-4 years, I’ve been doing pour-thru with a ceramic filter holder and Melita paper filters, with a Zojirushi on-demand water boiler.

I did a bit of looking around, found a recipe that called for 4 cups water to 3/4 grounds, and I happened to have that available. So I decided to go ahead and try a batch of cold-brew in the old french press, see if I like that.

          • JCF

The black triangle was officially for prostitutes. Unofficially, some lesbians were stuck w/ it, too.

I would much rather say what needs to be said and my stance be known than be perceived deceitful or cowardly. That said, I do know when to remain silent, so as to allow others to illustrate their idiocy without any assistance from me. Thank you Joe for bringing this to my attention. To read about this woman who formed what I can only imagine as part of the background noise of my life is illuminating. She was there from the 50’s through the 21st century and now there’s a tiny Liz Smith sized hole in my personal diorama. What does that consist of? The breathless excitement of knowing who is secretly dating whom. What famous woman threw a drink in what equally famous other’s face. Who’s feuding …who’s dating….who had to hit the couch to get the part…who leaves the flowers on Marilyn’s grave.
It is like something from the Paleolithic. Now if you want to know you just Google it, but Liz Smith brings back the memory of a time when we had to use the drums.

      • p.s. No, the other planets have zero effect on earthquakes. Gravitational pull is subject to the inverse square law.

Or to put it another way, the International Space Station has more of an effect on the Earth’s crust than Jupiter does at any point in its orbit. Which is to say, basically none.

    Rest in Peace.

Openly bisexual for like 5 minutes. She was wrenched out of the closet. I didn’t agree with that at that time, but calling her openly bi just isn’t accurate Joe.

lol, the fictitious “damage” Snowden did.

      fuuuuuucccckkkkk yoooooouuuuuu.

The cowardice and lying about what Snowden exposed continues to do damage.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

Unless they have dressing habits they’re now unexpectedly exposing, yeah, that was really dumb.

    • Cuberly Deux

I honestly wonder what the basement dweller troll ratio is compared to wing-nutz that actually hover on twitter waiting for orders.

One of the primary reasons I left twitter is how simple it is to manipulate the platform to raise a cacophony of irrelevance.

      • William

The only reason I have Twitter is to insult Trump, follow Joy and Rachel and see what that dreamy Steven from the Great British Bake-Off is doing.

  • Ninja0980
    • Skeptical_Inquirer

So basically he’s a nitwit because doesn’t that expose him to being deposed?

      • BobSF_94117

The election is in December, no? Discovery is a long, long way off.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

True but this means he’s going to be spending most of his term in court with tons of gross stuff coming out on a regular basis.

          • BobSF_94117

No. He’ll file (supposedly). Weeks will pass with nothing happening. The election will take place. Either result, he’ll withdraw the suit.

    • Cuberly Deux

      ADF?

      Sounds like a plan.

      Excuse me.

I now want to hear WaPo’s lawyers say, “Yes, please tell us the names of the girls and their mothers who allowed you to date them. I’m sure they could be excellent character witnesses on your behalf.”

        • Cuberly Deux

          …and he’s a…was a…judge.

What, we have how many weeks before the election? And, discovery has exactly how much time?

Lets say he wins and drops the suit. Is there such a thing were WaPo can keep the suit going?

    • blackstar

would love to see his son flip on him. I’m sure they can find something

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

Must be represented by those legal eagles at Liberty Counsel.

    • Bambino

It’s just a delay tactic until he wins the seat and drop the suit.

      • Cuberly Deux

        Yep.

      • Dreaming Vertebrate

Mostly it’s about raising money. I think I read he grifted a million dollars in just the first day or so.

        • Bambino

My take is the scandal has an effect on a very close race. With a month to go he can’t afford to have some of his supporters wavering. Filing law suit is to show he is fighting back and challenging the allegations to appear innocent.

        • William

          Must be nice.

    • Right after the election! Just like Donald!

      We’ve heard this tune before.

    • agcons

Shades of Oscar Wilde, Roy. I don’t expect this to work out any better for you (a good thing).

    • Gerry Fisher

Just like Trump’s lawsuit is coming against his accusers, right?

  • Ninja0980

O/T but if anyone follows Thinkprogress, something odd is happening with the twitter feed of one of their writers, Ian Millhiser.
He or someone else is deleting all of his tweets.
Sure hope nothing is about to come out about him….

    • Lazycrockett

Scrubbing is usually the first sign of impending scandal.

      • Ninja0980

Yup, which is why I have a really, really bad feeling some bad stuff is about to come out about him.
        I liked him too.

    • blackstar

he hasn’t posted since December 2016?

      • Ninja0980

He had tweets up as early as today and now they are all being deleted one by one.

    • blackstar

can’t t all tweets can be retrieved?

      • Ninja0980

I think so but the fact he is deleting all of them?

      • Lazycrockett

All tweets are stored by the library of congress.

    • SoCalGal20

      Or maybe he was hacked.

      • Lazycrockett

I dont think hackers would delete, they would just start tweeting some insane racist batshit stuff.

        • SoCalGal20

Depends. But why scrub tweets one by one which is what seems to be happening when he could just deactivate his account or make it private?

Very odd. There are still a lot of tweets to delete. It was in 2015 when I was there. A shame. He was a good twitter follow.

          • Ninja0980

He was one of the best, especially when it came to calling out Republican hypocrisy on the courts.

  • Bambino

This is horrible….but I hope that Stephen Sondheim stays healthy long enough to include this love song in a rewrite of one of his works that I am especially fond of. It would work well if combined with the lyrics of Hinckley & Fromme in “Unworthy of Your Love”

      • Cuberly Deux

Ok, I loathe Assassins. but I get your drift.

        “Assassins, the Autocrats”

        • TampaDink

Ideally, the updated song would include a ballad love triangle featuring Rodrigo, Vlad & Donny 2 scoops.

          • Cuberly Deux

While you’re at it, throw in a Cheney, W and Guantanamo.

          • TampaDink

My creativity can’t stretch that far….but I hope that Mr. Sondheim’s can.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

Isn’t that an alcoholic drink in Trump’s hand?
He claims he does not drink, but that would make twice just this week.

      • blackstar

Which is probably the reason he asked for seconds.

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

Now don’t you start and get Toad Starnes a droolin’.

      • TampaDink

It probably is an alcoholic beverage….and no matter how many hair furor consumes, he will assert & his followers WILL believe his claims that he’s only had a few sips of wine when he eats his Jesus cracker.

    • Bryan

I’m pretty sure that ISN’T what Snow Patrol meant by that……..

  • Ninja0980

O/T but should be noted in 48 hours or so, the result of the same sex marriage vote in Australia will be known.
The worst part is it won’t mean a damn thing.
The bigots who call the shots there right now can and will do everything they can to block it or water it down to make it worthless.

    • Lazycrockett

What a complete waste of time and money.

      • Ninja0980

Yup, but the Liberal Party (would be conservatives here) headed by Malcolm Turnbull can’t allow a vote less their base turn on them.

If I believed in the power of prayer, I’d pray for a rapidly turning base.

OT: I don’t see how the GOP is any different from the FLDS at its core. They have leaders who say “we can do what we want but you have to do what we say.” The overwhelming reverence of religion in this country is what kept crap like this happening.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/daughter-polygamous-sect-leader-says-185733809.html

“Other former members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints, including son Roy Jeffs, have also accused him of
sexually abusing them as children. Rachel Jeffs has penned a book about

Not much about Ms. Smith in this thread, but when I was doing PR back in the 80s, we regularly dealt with her. She had the most wonderful assistant, a guy whose name I don’t remember at this remove. I’m sorry about that. I was a young PR guy (no more-either young or in PR), and he told me how to fashion pitches for the column, which was a lot more than a lot of media people we worked with. I got items in from time to time, and I met her at an event we threw. Lovely.

    • Ernest Endevor

That’s how people in the business spoke of her. Unusual, given her line of work. What I also heard people speak of was her professionalism.
