Two GOP Senators Revoke Endorsements Of Moore

Talking Points Memo reports:

Two Republican senators rescinded their endorsements of Alabama Senate candidate (R) Roy Moore late Friday night over reports that he’d pursued relationships with multiple teenage women.

“Having read the detailed description of the incidents, as well as the response from Judge Moore and his campaign, I can no longer endorse his candidacy for the US Senate,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) said on Twitter.

Lee, one of Moore’s most high-profile supporters, had already requested that the campaign stop using his image on fundraising materials. A few minutes later, Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) also announced he was pulling his “endorsement and support for Roy Moore for U.S. Senate.”

Ideologically, Lee is probably more like Moore than anybody else in the Senate. He is the author of the so-called First Amendment Defense Act, which would legalize anti-LGBT business discrimination nationwide.

Oh, my. Sexual abuse allegations coming out of the woodwork. Why does this remind me of the McMartin preSchool hysteria, the satanic abuse hysteria, and the communist hysteria, the gay hysteria?

Americans sure require a lot of dark, shiny objects to keep them terrified of everything.

    • skyweaver

For countless women sexual assault is not a fear, it’s a reality. It’s not unusual at all, and it’s certainly not hysteria. Women are simply getting more courageous about talking about it

      • Ben in Oakland

And I don’t disagree with that statement, not in the slightest. I’m all for it.

        • skyweaver

And I don’t disagree with the idea that Americans need to be terrified. Putting aside the awful news programming on Fox, for example, if you look at their advertising, it’s all fear based (i.e. home security systems and buy-gold-because-the-economy-might-tank. ) It’s fascinating.

Terrified is a bit strong, but the Republicans do rule through fear. I believed angry would be a better term. At least for me. I have long through these end of the world hawkers were foreign plants or home grown traitors trying to destabilize our country.

I agree. The allegations are becoming a fad. The general character of the accused has much to do with belief.

I’m not that optimistic. Purely anecdotal and subjective on my part, but I think there are still far too many dems insisting on “going high,” no matter what evil the republican party inflicts on America.

To that point, I left a local dem-sponsored “Resist” FB group when the mods made it clear that their group was “open and friendly to all” and scolded me and another member for challenging a fake profile trolling the group (which she turned out to be), as well as he and I calling out another troll for dropping lies and false data about trickle-down economics benefitting the lower and middle classes. The mods did not want disagreements or debates for fear of disrespecting others’ opinions. Fuck that.

Stupid voters like to cast their ballots for people they can relate to. I’m sure for many guys in Alabama, this only makes Moore more relatable. He’d get brownie (whitie?) points if the 14 year old girl was actually related to him.

I’m always amazed when people don’t want someone more intelligent and educated than they are to run their country, state, etc.

  • Steverino

Slightly OT, but since this involves Mike Lee, I would expect a “First Amendment Defense Act” would involve the entire First Amendment, including defense against making any law respecting establishment of religion (are you listening, Christianists?), defense against abridging freedom of speech, defense against abridging freedom of press (are you listening, Trump?), defense against abridging the right to peaceably assemble, and defense against abridging the right to petition for a governmental redress of grievances.

Let’s win back control of the House in ’18.

    • bobbyjoe

Yeah, having Moore in the Senate might make the bigots of Alabama happy, but to the rest of GOP candidates nationally it’s gonna be a longterm gigantic headache, as it’ll be used to tar them as being the Party of Pedophiles, and should serve as a great Democratic fundraising device for years to come. Plus, Moore’s the loosest of loose cannons, and considering the loss of his judgeship, the tax scandals, the 9 times arrested son who’s still out there and could well kill someone with another DUI, and now the allegations of sexual exploitation of a minor, if the GOP thinks this is the last scandal they’ll have to deal with from Moore they need to have their heads examined.

      • AlternativeQuacks

I looked this up yesterday because of the Roy Moore story. Before the 20th century, age of consent in the U.S. and England was generally considered to be between 10 and 13, but largely depended on what the family considered okay. Per Wikipedia:

“The English common law had traditionally set the age of consent within the range of 10 to 12, but in 1875 the age was raised to 13.”

So it’s kind of illogical to judge Joseph Smith by 20th century standards. Roy Moore is another story, though.

        • Jonathan Smith

          no. it is not.
social mores might change, but that does NOT make it “right”
how would YOU have felt being married for the rest of his life, and to his son’s lives if he was 50 and you were 12?

          • Silver Badger

The Mormons can marry for all time and eternity. There should definitely be informed consent involved.

          • Jonathan Smith

            nice work around.
after a life of rape and subjugation,
you will be mine for all eternity.
            people buy into this crap?

          • Silver Badger

My grandparents were married for all time and eternity after their deaths. To the best of my knowledge, neither gave their consent. They weren’t Mormon either. Another branch of the family was. (This is not bad as much as it is absurd.)

          • Jonathan Smith

            that was our GRANDPARENTS.
two weeks after my grandmother died, my grandfather stated he couldn’t live without her, and died the the same night.
they had been together for 65 years.
she WAS NOT 14 when they got married.
he was NOT a child molester.
if you want to spend eternity with someone, make sure they are old enough to know their own minds.
and i am sorry, but 14 is NOT it.

          • Silver Badger

            We are in agreement.

Why does everybody make this mistake?

Average lifespans were shorter due to high infant mortality.

    • Silver Badger

Consider the times. For much of human history, a 14 year old girl was considered ripe and ready for marriage. Or something, depending on her social status,.

  • AlternativeQuacks

Not having any kids of my own, and generally avoiding being around them at all costs, I was trying to visualize what a 14-year-old looks like because I genuinely don’t know. I went on a “famous birthdays” website to try to get an idea. Here’s what I found. Everybody in this photo is 14 and they’re not cherry-picked: these are the first 24 fourteen-year-old “celebrities” that popped up. This is what 14 looks like.

    I hope this helps.
