Senate Republicans Flail For Ways To Stop Roy Moore, May Pressure Alabama Governor To Delay Election

The New York Times reports:

Republican senators and their advisers, in a flurry of phone calls, emails and text messages, discussed fielding a write-in candidate, pushing Alabama’s governor to delay the Dec. 12 special election or even not seating Mr. Moore at all should he be elected.

In an interview, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, declined to say whether he would agree to seat Mr. Moore should he win. Mr. McConnell deferred a question about a possible write-in campaign by Senator Luther Strange, the current occupant of the seat, to Mr. Strange.

The frenzy reflected not just the worry over the Senate seat once held by Jeff Sessions, now the attorney general, but also the broader danger of the Republican Party’s being associated with Mr. Moore.

  • another_steve

They understand the disaster that Moore represents for their party.

    I’m lovin’ this.

  • Lazycrockett

Delaying the election will only galvanize Moore supporters. The only option is not seat Moore once elected.

    • another_steve

The Bannon wing will go berserk if Moore isn’t seated.

      There’ll be all-out war.

      • Chucktech

You say that like it’s a bad thing…

      • Bambino

Sigh it’s always an all-out war with them people. All-out war on Christians, all-out war on white people, all-out war on Republicans, all-out war on patriots and yada, yada, yada……….

        • another_steve

Lots of money to be made by declaring war on “those others.” The outsiders. The ones that don’t belong. In politics as well as in religion.

The theofascists learned this very early on.

No better way to get money dropped in the collection basket than to say that it’s for the “good fight.”

“The fight against [insert the evil du jour] here.”

    • Boreal

      They won’t do that.
“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”

    • PickyPecker

Feeling in the Holiday mood, eh, Mr. Crockett? Muellermas?

  • David J

I guess Alabamians believe that horrible horrible things would happen to their state if they elected one Democrat to be one of two Senators to represent them in DC. ??? The minds of those voters are like the minds of their fathers and mothers, who felt agitators from the North were messing up their fine segregated schools of the 1950’s.

    • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

This is what I want to know. WHY would they vote for a pedophile over any Democrat? What is their reasoning?

      • Adam King

        “Reasoning”? Hahahahaha!

        • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

I suspect for a lot in the South, the “reasoning” would go something like, “The Democrats just want to abort babies and give free stuff to Black people”. I just want to hear them say it.

      • JohnJay

        Dem=Devil
Pedo Moore + “young girls” = natural as Joseph & Mary

Peter is blind to anything sexual that isn’t done by homosexuals. Straight ass sex, premarital sex, S&M, orgies…. all done by straight people but never discussed by Peter.

      • Treant

You had me at orgies, but then I realized you meant straight people.

      • gaycuckhubby

Lol. I was being serious. Not sure we should start condemning legal sex with teenagers.

        • Natty Enquirer

          But, but, EW! /s

        • Priya Lynn

Who says it was all legal?

          • gaycuckhubby

We don’t know. But generalizing it to saying “teenagers” is problematic

      • April

Same reason he went after Trans folks concerning public bathrooms. It’s not Trans folk they should to be concerned about, It’s the creepy heterosexual men out there.

    • Lars Littlefield

What’s so dangerous about poking Peter LaBabablooa with a pointy stick?

      • gaycuckhubby

Dangerous to move the goal posts so far that consenual sex with legal teenagers is an attack point

        • Strepsi

Yeah, for gay men there is a LOT of nuance and complexity of age-of-consent laws and how they’ve been used to harm us. Like the tradition of arresting a couple (say, 16 and 20 or 17 and 22) and report it as a man was arrested having sex with a boy. Coupled with the actual fact of many of our extremely positive experiences as young gaylings with older lovers… it’s a difficult topic to complex for social media.

          • gaycuckhubby

And I believe str8 people and women in particular are just as nuanced and complex as us.
            We are not more evolved

        • Bradley Hendricks

It’s an attack point if you define yourself by “Christian” morals or “family values.”

        • Priya Lynn

Who says it was all consensual and legal? He put the moves on a 14 year old, obviously he was open to having illegal sex with her.

          • gaycuckhubby

Yes. Sex acts with a 14 yr old is a criminal act. And should be prosecuted
But I didn’t think that allegation was being referenced in the tweet.
If it was then I stand corrected

        • agcons

In future LaBabs poking (with sticks only) all that would be required is the modifier “underage”, and no problem.

          • gaycuckhubby

            Agreed

  • Tor

Let him be the boil on the collective Republican ass.

  • MikeBx2

They will find a way to keep Moore AND Doug Jones from winning.

  • Adam Stevens

The Republican Party CREATED the environment in which a loser like Moore can thrive.

    He’s yours. YOU built this.

  • crewman

So much toxicity in the GOP. This is what Limbaugh, Gingrich, Bannon, and Fox News bring to the country.

    • another_steve

Been a lot of talk in the media about how the Republican Party has reverted to a kind of tribalism. Even within their own ranks there are competing tribes who aren’t at all interested in cooperating with one another.

This appears to be a new emerging phenomenon in American politics.

      • Chucktech

And that just galls the shit outta me. “Tribalism.” Bullshit. It’s called being a party-before-country traitor.

        • another_steve

There really hasn’t been enough use of the word “traitor” by the media.

If Trump and his gang in fact colluded with a sworn enemy of the United States, they’re traitors and should be put on trial as such.

          • Chucktech

            Hear, fucking hear.

          • Strepsi

“traitor” and also “lied”…. I am getting furious with the “said” or the clearer “made the claim that” or the harsher “made the unsubstantiated claim” — at what point can they just call a liar a liar?

          • another_steve

Over the past few months I’ve detected more of a “willingness” among the commentators on MSNBC and CNN to call Trump a liar.

They used to parse their words – say he was “stretching the truth” and such – but more and more I hear them say, “he’s lying.”

          • bkmn

I don’t know why they try to extend any courtesies to Trump, he certainly does not extend any to MSNBC or CNN.

          • another_steve

Lol… The orange monster has threatened to shut them down, for cryin’ out loud.

Donald Trump is an existential threat to the free press in America. Not even Richard Nixon took that war as far as Trump has.

      • bkmn

That is because the GOP decided to outsource their messaging to Fox, and Fox took it and ran with it to the point that the GOP no longer sets the agenda anymore. Fox and the satellite right wing media set the agenda for the GOP.

        • another_steve

          That’s a very good point.

Trump is making zero effort to reach out to the non-deplorable wing of his party. Never mind the Dems – he’s not even interested in talking to the few remaining Republican moderates.

The only reason Trump is still in office is the 37 percent or so of deplorable Americans who support him. Who think he’s doing a great job.

To Trump and Bannon, all the other Republicans are the enemy.

      • Todd20036

Nazis. White, christian straight men are more equal than others. Pigs indeed.

    • Ninja0980

Yup, the 90’s Republican Revolution was far more destructive then folks realize.

    • bkmn

And WND, Drudge, not to mention all the fundie Christian groups.

  • Boreal

The frenzy reflected not just the worry over the Senate seat once held

  • Treant

Ah, ah, ah! You raped it, you bought it. You deal with it, assholes.

    • Sporkfighter

      Two questions:

      What’s fifty shekels in dollars?

Does Moore have a receipt to prove he paid?

      • clay

        (sources vary, somewhere around $250-$450)

        • agcons

That’s today’s shekel. What would a Bronze Age shekel be worth in dollars today, I wonder?

          • Snarkaholic

Not sure, but one of my teachers told me that, at 30 pieces of silver, Judas sold out Jesus for about $17.00.

          • Bluto

So jesus WAS cheap & easy. I like that.

      • LesbianTippingHabits

Don’t bother to ask Donald Trump for a receipt.

He never pays his bills. Never.

What nobody has ever written to Donald Trump:

        Paid in full.

        Nobody.

  • lawrence090469

Roy Moore is garbage, as we all here agree. I’m uncomfortable with the idea of not seating a duly elected official on principle. This is a line we all should be wary of crossing.

    • LesbianTippingHabits

As the song goes, “It’s too late, to turn back now . . . ”

We have to trust the judgment of the American people, even if we don’t like it.

Say what you want re Hillary Clinton, there she was January 20, 2017.

      Thank you.

    • PickyPecker

I dunno. I was uncomfortable with the GOP leaving a Supreme Court seat open for over a year. MERRIK GARLAND!

    • Tulle Christensen

Well, I am uncomfortable with the presidential popular vote getter not being seated as president. so….

    • Adam King

He can be removed from the Senate by a three-fifths majority vote of the Senate.

      • Sporkfighter

So if the Democratic senators all abstain, wouldn’t that give the Alabama voters what they asked for, deny the Alabama governor the opportunity to appoint a replacement, and stick the Republicans with an albatros for the next six years?

        • Adam King

Yup. Wouldn’t even take all of them.

  • Sam_Handwich

i think the least messy outcome for the GOP would be Sen. Doug Jones until 2020, and then Strange could win the seat back

    • Chucktech

I would imagine that Alabama pigs care little about messes.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Wait…delay the election??? You fuckers made this bed and you should be made to lie in it. Further, you have no problem propping up an admitted philandering, pussy grabbing narcissist who once said he would date his own daughter if he could, so what’s the problem here? Roy Moore IS ‘your kind of guy,’….OWN IT!

    • clay

What’s the problem? Roy Moore might be their guy, just not in the Senate.

      • Joe in PA

        I got it…Supreme Court!

        • PeterC

          Snark, SNArk, SNARK

          • Snarkaholic

            Yes?

        • RemusL

Don’t they already have one on the Supreme Court? The one who tends to sleep through most cases?

        • o noooooo

    • Tom Mears

There probably isn’t a LEGAL way for Alabama to delay the election anyway. For that matter refusing to seat Ol Roy is probably on shaky ground as well. Roy is certainly the self-righteous-fuk-the-consequences-prik who would sue in either case.

Any real judge is going to have an impossibly hard time justifying either action based on an just an accusation. This can never go to trial either, the statute expired on the 14yr old and it was grossly creepy but not illegal for the others.

They are in a you broke it you bought it situation. And we should all giggle and watch it happen.

      • John30013

Actually, the Constitution (Article 1, Section 5) specifically grants each house of Congress the absolute right to control their own membership: “Each House shall be the Judge of the Elections, Returns and Qualifications of its own Members[…].”

        • ian

Now that would be popcorn worthy. I doubt they’d have the courage to follow through and oust Moore because it would be a real GOP civil war. Moore is going to be an Albatross around the GOP’s neck, and that’s great. My only worry is the Democrats just don’t have what it takes to make use of the gift Moore will be.

          • John30013

Unfortunately, although his morals are questionable, his votes will not be. He’ll certainly vote the party line on most issues, although I suppose it’s possible he would withhold his vote if a bill wasn’t far enough to the right (sort of how Rand Paul voted against some versions of the ACA repeal because they didn’t go far enough).

  • MikeBx2

O/T: Kremlin denies Trump ask about election meddling. Trump says Kremlin more believable than U.S. intelligence. Awkward.

      • LesbianTippingHabits

Well, back in 2002-2003, those same U.S. intelligence agencies were 100% totally convinced – “a slam dunk” – that Iraq had WMD.

Too bad Bush 43 and his crowd didn’t care about the longer term.

        • MikeBx2

Not the same as in 2002, and that’s been shown by many reputable sources many times. But to be clear, are you saying that the reason Trump says U.S. Intelligence agencies are “political hacks” is because he cares about the longer term?

          • LesbianTippingHabits

MikeBx2, thank you for your comment. I believe 2017 differs from 2002. I haven’t used the term you used in quotes, so I don’t know where it came from.

Donald Trump Does Not Care about the longer term.

All I am pointing out is that, as has been well documented since 2002-2003, U.S. intelligence agencies are not infallible; they are run by humans who make human judgments, and were – back in 2002-2003, influenced by the desires of political leadership of the time.

Unfortunately for all concerned, the cost of all these fiascoes was a long-term loss of respect and credibility. Too bad nobody cared back then, because it’s now gone forever, or for an awfully long time.

Even if U.S. intelligence agencies are telling the truth, like Cassandra, healthy skepticism is legitimate. As Donald Trump would put it, Sad !

Their leadership – back then and now – is responsible.

            Sad ! again.

          • MikeBx2

Though mine differs, I respect your opinion. As for my quoted term, it was from Trump.
            https://twitter.com/ErinBurnett/status/929328632123854848

        • bkmn

That came from Cheney, who forced the WMD to be included in one of their reports so he could use it to start a war he could profit off of.

          • MikeBx2

That’s right. Bush and Cheney used circumstantial evidence and called it a slam dunk. The digital fingerprints that prove Russian election meddling are not circumstantial evidence.

          • LesbianTippingHabits

Back in 2002-2003, it wasn’t just Bush and Cheney who called it a “slam dunk.” It was also Clinton holdover CIA Director George Tenet.

It’s sad that our intel agencies have lost their credibility, but their leadership – including below Tenet – at the time bears this responsibility.

Perhaps Trump “draining the swamp” of Washington might help the American people to think again what real public service means.

I’m not hopeful right now, but the jury’s still out. Thank you.

      • Clive Johnson

i wonder what people in our intelligence services are thinking right now.

        • another_steve

          They’re fuming.

The media, including New York Times and the Washington Post, should instead be interviewing experts in Sharia law about what is alleged about Roy Moore decades ago.

Perhaps this may be an opportunity to influence the views of the still likely next U.S. Senator from Alabama.

[I don’t like that. Full disclosure: I donated to his Democratic opponent a long time ago, well before these allegations hit the media. But we need to acknowledge reality Thank you.]

  • boobert

Too little, too late ! They just might lose a senate seat, or moore wins and brings his gun with him. lol

    • LesbianTippingHabits

I remember back in August 2004 when BlogActive outed a Republican Member of Congress in Tidewater Virginia, Rep. Ed Schrock, but did so before – not after – the deadline for the party to substitute a candidate, who won and kept the seat Republican.

      H e l – l o !

Now, as the song says, “It’s too late, to turn back now . . . ”

Not quite. Schrock dropped out on August 30, 2004 and was replaced on the Republican ticket by Thelma Drake who won on Nov 2.

        • LesbianTippingHabits

Actually, quite. BlogActive outed Schlock Before – rather than After – the deadline for the Republicans to substitute another candidate, who, as you mentioned, went on to win the general election in November.

Had BlogActive waited until After the deadline, the Republicans would have been stuck with Ed Schrock.

There was no hurry to publicize the story. Thank you.

My father was a Marine in WWII, and would *never* talk about it. Only recently, did I learn he saved a horse from a Japanese-held island in the Pacific, and oh how I wish he was with me to talk about what he had to deal with.

      RIP, Dad. I love you.

      • Oscarlating Wildely

Very true point. Many who have been war, however noble their actions, or seen it scourge, no matter how guiltless they were, will simply never talk about it. I still recall the same mantra about the Holocaust: “What happened to our family?” Those who got out did. “And those that were left?” Those who got out did.

It was often the end of the discussion.

just where in alabama will they find a republican who’s not corrupt to the core in the short time they’ll have?

that’s the sort of project that could take years.

    • Bambino

Gerrymandering is not the only way to held on to powers by the GOP. Apparently indefinitely delay of an election is another option.

    • Tomcat

Who said they are looking for a non-corrupt one? All they need is one with little proof of his actions.

  • Tomcat

Deny, deny, deny and when that don’t work, delay, delay delay. And then back to deny again.

Just a reminder to the good people of Alabama who read here on JMG: We love you and in no way is our mocking of the Republicans in your state a mocking of you. Even if and when we neglect to specifically say Republican Alabamians.

I live in Maryland and believe me we’ve got ourselves some serious dreck in our state too. KKK activity in the western portions, for instance.

    You’re far from alone. 😉

Question: If Moore wins the election could he then resign and the governor could appoint a replacement or would that be moot if the Senate will not seat/confirm him (Moore) first?

    • Sam_Handwich

yes, that’s a possibility anyway. would be a riot if the Gov reappointed Strange.

but this would require Moore playing along, and he doesn’t play well with others

They’re going to need a bigger can.

  • Even Mitt Romney has jumped into the act, attacking Moore on moral grounds for going after underage girls. Keep in mind that bishop Romney belongs to a cult that to this day reveres Brigham Young, who had 55 wives, three of whom were only 16 at the age of marriage, and one of whom was only 15. Such a freak show the GOP is!

Speaking of snowflakes, apparently over at Daily Kos they can’t handle anything which offends their straight mentality. They ran an article about an Alabama GOP representative who called for Moore’s accusers to be prosecuted for speaking out now and not 40 years ago. In the Comments someone asked if this politician had any relationships with women. Another responded that he was married with two kids. I replied with the following comment; His wife should take off her strap-on and beat his face bloody with it. There were six responses to this; 3 Recommends and 3 Replies. I never got to see the Replies because Daily Kos monitors removed my comment and sent me a warning, which I had to acknowledge. Apparently someone complained. I have made other comments on Kos which were somewhat edgy, but never had one removed before today. My suggestion that Mitch McConnell be dragged from the Senate Chamber and hanged from the closest tree available on the Washington Mall was alright. But I guess at Daily Kos, suggesting that a straight men would take a dildo up the ass from his wife is a bridge too far. It couldn’t have been the bloody face thing, because lots of other comments suggested far worse for this reprobate Republican. I’m kind of done with Daily Kos. The place is infested with hardcore Bernie Bros anyway.

      • another_steve

Over at Daily Kos they have their own brand of hyper-PCism, and they enforce it.

JMG is unique in that regard. Commenters aren’t “warned” and comments aren’t deleted based solely on some arbitrary PC standard.

Joe understands the true meaning of “troll,” I believe.

        Not all blog administrators do.

      • I called Susan Sarandon a “harridan and nasty virago” there because she said a President Hillary would be as bad if not worse than the shithead President we have now, and children are having their healthcare stripped away from them. Someone ran a clip from Thelma and Louise last week in a positive reference to her — and two people accused me of being misogynist! Go figure. I could have called her a c-faced female dog, but I would never write language like that. Some people really like her there.

And even if you accept the story on its face — and I don’t — the man alleges he was already 23 and in a social setting. A grope in that context is, as you say, not unexpected and the encounter ended when the fellow, by his account, refused consent. It’s not a case where he was somebody’s visiting son, or in a work setting, or someone underage.

        https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/nov/11/george-takei-responds-to-accusation-he-sexually-assaulted-a-young-actor

And in any event it doesn’t seem to fit George’s history. Weinstein, Spacey and others had a whole string of incidents in their past. I’m inclined to believe George.

        • Snarkaholic

George says he doesn’t know the man.
The man says that he and George spoke on the phone…more than once. If true, wouldn’t there be phone records?

          • coram nobis

The accuser says they went to dinner and the theater. so which restaurant? what theater and what was playing? would be a start to confirm some of the story

George says he does not remember ever meeting the guy so where and how does the guy say they met? The accuser says he would tell friends about it at parties, get these friends on record

The post confirmed these types of info before accusing Moore, so it is not too much to ask for George’s accuser to do the same

      • Snarkaholic

Also, can he describe the inside of George’s house/apartment?

    • JAKvirginia

An accusation is just that. Burden of proof is on the accuser. How do you prove something you’ve not done as some are suggesting George do? Burden of proof is on the accuser.

Tuesday was so significant for so many reasons – not the least of which were the wins of those two very fine women.

So much happening. Sometimes, really really important things get lost in the news cycle.

Their wins were really really important, though.

    • Danica is a very powerful public speaker. I was very impressed with her victory speech.

    • UrsusArctos 🐻

I have a few touches of personal “weirdness” about transfolk. That said, I’ll defend the rights for anyone to decide their preferences, body form, way of living as hard as I fight for my own rights. No one says you have to completely understand someone’s problems in order to work to reduce them. Discomfort is NOT a reason to refuse to learn or treat someone as “less than”. I have been impressed with many of the outspoken trans people who are taking no shit. That’s sexy in ANY gender.
      *digging out asbestos undies*

      • April

        Personal weirdness?

        • UrsusArctos 🐻

Yes, weirdness. As in – having to take a moment to wrap my head around the fact that a friend from high school/college called me post-Katrina, years after we had drifted apart to check on us. He told me he had transitioned FtM. He had taken my middle name as his. It was a moment of real mixed emotions about something that was NOWHERE on my radar. Nothing judgmental, just a lot to process. I was honored that a stone butch lesbian felt I was a model for living life in a take me as I am manner by adopting my name as his. I was upset that I had no idea that he had been dealing with something as huge as transition. Weirdness.
Weirdness as in – meeting a hot as hell FtM and checking that I wasn’t fetishizing his being a FtM, but finding him hot period. It’s from being aware of some of the crap transfolk have to deal with it and not falling into a hurtful behavior. Weirdness.
It’s akin to some of the discomfort I’m sure my straight friends have blow up at times. A decent person will set it aside, but to me denying that discomfort is as bad as embracing bigotry in many ways. So yes, moments of personal weirdness that I don’t let make decisions for me, but allow to pass and go back to adulting.

I came of sexual age pretty early, though I don’t know whether at age 14 I was ready and willing to truly be able to consent to sexual behavior.

      It’s a borderline age, I think.

      • coram nobis

The law won’t recognize consent below a certain age. Your feelings may have been genuine, but the adult in the relationship was the one legally obligated.

        • another_steve

Been much discussed over the years here in the JMG comment threads, cn. Every time we go over it, another 10 or so commenters block me. lol. 😉

I understand the rationale for legal line-drawing. Even when and where relatively arbitrary. I get that.

That said, I think the strict line-drawing in this arena sucks.

          • coram nobis

Well, yes, and the age of consent does vary from place to place, and some states have “Romeo and Juliet” laws to allow for romance among teens above and below the set age. The concept of informed consent is an old one in common law, which is basically that a child of [age] or below cannot give knowledgeable consent to anything, including, say, binding contracts. At common law, sexual intercourse without consent is rape. Moreover, the statutory-rape law comes with no provision for intent, it’s strict liability.

And, with the post-Harvey Weinstein environment, we’re finding that coercive sex, either because of the workplace, age or some other power differential, is something that isn’t really consensual either. It’s worth a discussion, because a big studio executive — or a state prosecutor in a courthouse — can be terribly coercive. Worth a discussion.

          • another_steve

            Great comment, cn. Thanks.

Coercive sex is a terrible evil. The harshest legal penalties must apply to it. No one can debate that.

The question is: How does society determine “coercion” in this arena?

It would be interesting to know the economic class of Moore’s victims. Since it appeared that one victim was from a trouble family, this vulture may have gone after the weakest and most vulnerable.

    • coram nobis

He was a prosecutor at that time, IIRR, and that carries plenty of coercive power as it is. Personal-injury lawyer, DA, circuit judge, in and out of trouble, so he probably seemed intimidating to those who were poor, facing charges, in divorce proceedings or some other kind of legal trouble.

      • Jerry Kott

True and in a rural area, he could have appeared as a way out to his victims. He could cherry picked ( no pun intended) his victims and knew how vulnerable they were. Like Clergy picked their prey.

“No problem officer. I’m taking care of this little girl while her mother is in court. No reason for her tender ears to hear all that.”

“Very kind of you sir!” (Beams) “You have a good day.”

The leading country in the creation of the TPP was the U.S. We already had a free-trade agreement with South Korea. We still do, though Trump has hinted at pulling out of it, too.

As a result, there was some interest in eventually joining the TPP, but South Korea was going to wait and see and maybe join later. With Trump pulling out of treaties left and right, I suspect SK will join the TPP sooner rather than later.

      THE TIME: 1975

      THE CITY: Tampa

THE PLACE: The gay bar Rene’s

I walked into Rene’s. My first gay bar. I was 18 and just out of high school.

It was dark. And smokey. My eyes needed to adjust.

Moments after walking in, a new song came on.

      Love to Love You Baby.

The entire place went CRAZY. Every man rushed to the dance floor. The lighting system became a frenzy of colors and pulsating brilliance.

I then heard moans emanate from the huge speakers. Moan. Moan. Moan. The hundreds of men all screamed in unison.

I looked around. Stunned. For this was the first time in my life that I was not alone. I was suddenly NOT a terrified minority as I always had been. I was 100% surrounded by men…just…like…me. I had the distinct sense that I had waited 18 years for THIS moment. And life, for the first time, felt…right.

Love to Love You Baby played on. The hundreds of boys screamed. The lights pulsated.

      And I knew.

      I was home. At last.

Some of their panic over this is the timing, I think.

The strong and pretty swift condemnation from the left of Weinstein and Spacey, contrasted with the way the right has reacted to sexual misconduct accusations over the last year or so, just give ammunition to Democrat challengers. Combine that with this weeks election showing the mood of the electorate, and the more sane of Repub caucus have to be thinking “We don’t really want to be caught on the wrong side of this”. Add to that the fact, apparently, that none of them can stand Moore, and actually speaking out starts to seem like a good idea.

I’ve never been a fan of Bill. I’ll say this, I’d tend to find the accusations from Jones, Wiley & Broaderick more plausible than I would the hysterical far-right conspiracies claiming Bill screws underage girls in Thailand…etc.

The problem with his primary accusers is the fact that the far-right has made so many insane claims that it reduces Bill’s exploits to being comedic. And their appearance at the Prex debate made it even moreso. It was a flat out attempt at turning the debates into a reality show on the level of a Jerry Springer. But, it was their choice to be exploited politically.

In my opinion claims deserve to be aired, I don’t give a damn who it is or which side of the aisle they’re on.

      • Ninja0980

It would be so awesome if the Democrat should win the Alabama Senate seat. He will certainly vote with the Democrats to organize the Senate and elect the Majority Leader. He can’t be expected to vote like the Dems from Mass, N Y, R I, Calif etc. Not if the Dems want to hold on to that seat. National liberals will have to understand that he will have to stake out some very conservative positions on some issues. Big tent is needed. In the past Alabama sent some respected, but very conservative men to represent them in the Senate. John Sparkman and Howell Heflin were very conservative Dems who represented Alabama in the Senate from the 1940s to the late 1990s. Sparkman was the liberal Adlai Stevenson’s V.P. running mate in 1952 and Heflin although very conservative voted against confirming Clarence Thomas for the U.S. Supreme Court and voted against confirming Jeff Sessions to be a Federal Judge. In this nation of 330 million diverse people, the Democratic party needs to be a big tent party, with a solid center as well as a left and right wing. That calls for lots of compromises which make governance possible while not making any of the ideologues very happy.

    • Reality.Bites

He is a modern Democrat and is running as one.

Just curious what compromises you think are OK? Frankly, in 1952 minorities didn’t expect much from the Democratic Party and LGBTQ expected less than nothing.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’m really tired of hearing that the base of the Democratic party has to expect less than crap in order to appease Trumpeteers. I’m reminded of MLK Jr. writing in his letter about his frustration with all these supposed allies ALWAYS complaining about him being demanding too much, too soon.

        • Reality.Bites

          I totally agree.

Neither your Bill of Rights nor our Charter of Rights says anything about rights being subject to political expediency.

However, if Andrew were to argue that he might have to not support single-payer or a $15 minimum wage (neither of which, I think, are official party policy) then I could accept that.

    • JCF

I hope (and believe*) he’ll be to the left of Manchin, but beyond that…he’s from Alabama.

      * If only because I can’t see Manchin running on the fact that he convicted a white man of killing “4 black little girls”.

I went to an all-boy’s high school in NYC for four years (Brooklyn Tech, for NYC people reading here – before it went coed).

We showered in gym, just like that.

I still get hard thinking about it.

      • AlternativeQuacks

I think everybody who went to school before the 80s (maybe before the 90s?), used showers like that. They still have them in some gyms.

        • Adam King

I’m old and haven’t ever been to a gym where the showers weren’t like that. How are the different now? Individual stalls?

          • AlternativeQuacks

The problem with declawing is that it’s basically amputation. It’s more than just nail trimming because the first joint is also removed. I figure that if the scratching annoys them, then the constant poop scooping is liable to irritate them just as much.

    • worstcultever

Good. Horrible, barbaric practice. And re scratching: one just has to work at it, to hit on something they like above any other thing. For my kitty it was just a hunk of driftwood on the floor. (Scratching isn’t just a claw thing – they do it to work their whole arms/biceps)

The word “entitlement” is one of conservatives favorites to throw around, but I was simply stunned to discover the actual origin and meaning of this word, and I believe that most of you will also be likewise stunned.

    https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1997/03/the-worst-thing-bill-clinton-has-done/376797/

The term was a specific technical term pertaining to the welfare system and how assistance was allotted by the fed to the states, and how the states implemented it. The way conservatives, and we, have been using it and defending it has been incorrect for years. They pulled off quite the coup in successfully redefining the term and using it against us. We need to make sure to put a stop to this.

And some who really are the Deplorables: Racists, bigots, misogynists, Nazis.

The former can be reached, some of ’em even regret their votes. The latter can’t and we shouldn’t even bother. McCabe and Schilling are obviously among them.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’m fortunate in that my mom hates Trump. While she leans GOP and loathes Hillary, it helps that she has no cable (so no constant Faux News), is non-religious and is college educated. So it’s possible for conservatives to dislike Trump but I really do think they need to have the capacity to doubt in the first place and not be subjected to 24-7 Faux propaganda from cable, bad internet sites & churches.

She’s read the local newspaper & news and heard about the crazy batshit “tax reform” where they’re going to gouge the poor to pamper the rich so if I were a Dem campaign organizer, that particular issue is what to hit hard on because it can actually reach people who aren’t completely spiteful and/or brainwashed.

One more thing though. The author of the Politico piece didn’t bring up the ONE thing that *might* have connected w/ these people (the thing that set my 97 year old dad off again just yesterday): draft dodger.

NB: I lived for 5 years just over the mountains from there (Johnstown). Central PA is political hellhole pretty much everywhere (if anything, my area, Huntingdon, was REDDER: Johnstone at least still had a conservative Democratic Rep. in the 90s). But socio-economically? Johnstone combined the absolute WORST of rural ignorance, with Rust Belt decay (and that was BEFORE heroin hit!). It’s literally a garbage disposal of the USA…

  • Lazycrockett

    MSNBC has gone live.

    • Sam_Handwich

      who is hosting?

      • Lazycrockett

        Just showing the press conference.

    • Natty Enquirer

They painted the balustrade orange in honor of their guest.

    • Not interested in what Cheeto Hitler has to say. But thanks for the heads-up, friend.

Oh goody,he’s going to speak. I hope he had his morning quarter pounder and apple pie.

    • safari

Although good news… let’s talk about Roy Moore’s punishment.

    • Sam_Handwich

as depressing as last November was, things have certainly become quite tasty

      • JCF

Oh, we’re far from “tasty”. We’ve just improved from nauseating.

  • houstonray

I can’t watch, just can’t, but please, those watching, keep us informed of the embarrassment that he is….

    • safari

      *sniff*

    • Natty Enquirer

So far, a scripted study in orange and yellow.

      • safari

I’d expect at least some brown .

A little ad lib just slipped in.

I think something must be about to drop from the Mueller investigation, because Trump is tweeting like somebody poured fire ants down his shorts.

Trump is frantically walking back his criticism of the “political hack” inteliigence agencies.

Said it before and I’ll say it again, THIS is the story our side really needs to hear.
The damage done by these far right hacks will last a life time.

    • William

This is what happens when a clown car drives into a Senate hearing room.

    • SoCalGal20

And this story right here is why judges should not have lifetime appointments, imo. I dare say even for SCOTUS. Give them 10 year terms like the FBI Director or something.

    • Friday

Why we couldn’t afford to lose this one. It’s not the judicial appointments for a lifetime that are the real fault, it’s that checks and balances have been deliberately destroyed by the Republicans.

  • Diversity….of thought

Mr. Sulu, I believe it when you say you are innocent.

    • Friday

Honestly, even the accusation sounds like kind of a non-story to me, …according to that, two adults meet at a bar, one at least is three sheets to the wind, go to accused’s place, accuser passes out some time in the proceedings, even in accusation says “No,” accused says, “OK,” and… well, there’s not much *to* that, is there? Even if it weren’t a story being pushed by Russian bots and trolls.

    • JCF

I wish I were as convinced of that. Truly.

  • Lumpy Gaga

In honor of geography: Agent Orange

    • William

My cousin had a Barbie named Agent Orange. It wore a trench coat.

  • worstcultever

After that last string of dotard tweets, SOMEBODY HAS GOT TO DO SOMETHING about this madman, NOW. The entire situation grows more disturbing by the minute.

  • Sam_Handwich
    • Lazycrockett

      Bull Shit

      • Sam_Handwich

i think it’s half bullshit. child molestation aside, McConnell is afraid of Moore

        • Ninja0980

Because he knows Moore would be an anchor around Republicans necks.

          • Sam_Handwich

he’d be like Ted Cruz on steroids.

Cruz has been tamed. Moore can’t be.

          • Lazycrockett

He already spent a week in DC making nice to his fellow GOP Senators.

          • MBear

Wouldnt ir be fun if he still won? LOL

          • Sam_Handwich

yes, exactly. a nightmare for McConnell, and i think he would only further divide a tenuous majority. .

    • Treant

Citation required. Also, I’ll believe it when I see it.

    • Cuberly Deux

      Oh Puhleeeeez!

After the bullshit they pulled to fill a SCOTUS seat with a jacked up version of Scalia?

No freakin way, the GOP finding morals? In their world, why start now?

“The Radical Camp’s followers argue, on their social-media accounts and in their literature, that the influx of Syrian refugees into Europe is part of a conspiracy driven by Jewish financiers, who are working with Communists in the European Union to bring Muslims into Europe, and with them, Shariah law and homosexuality.”

Henry Louis (Skip) Gates had this great line, on his show “Finding Your Roots” (in this segment, he was doing the geneology of Paul Rudd, 2 generations ago “Rudnitsky”, when his grandfather left Britain. I was truly SHOCKED to discover that there were actually Fascists in the UK right *after* WW2!!! :-0)

That must be so embarrassing for Americans

      • Lazycrockett

Its also foreshadowing for what this administration has coming for all Veterans.

      Appalling (that they were deported).

    • zhera

DEPORTED veterans. How does that even happen?

  • -M-

So has Caleb Moore been arrested again?

    • ByronK

      Again?!

    • MBear

Has he filled in a whole punch card yet?

    • Ninja0980

Not seeing anything in the news yet.

    • Treant

Daddy hasn’t bribed Caleb out of the last one yet, so that could be troublesome.

    • Bambino

Is Daddy Roy taking out on him again?

  • SoCalGal20

Yeah… the only political hacks I’m seeing are Trump and friends.

….and the “Judge” keeps talking. And, it gets creepier and creepier. Yep, I know those two. (sigh)

How many women out there are yet to come forward?

    • Treant

Hopefully one or two per day until the special election. Otherwise, the outrage wears off, Alabamans shrug and say, “Well, it was only three girls, and it’s better than a Democrat in office,” and a kiddie fucker goes to the Senate…

      • Cuberly Deux

I still think he’ll win. (gag)

        • Treant

          So do I. Alabama.

The only thing less likely to win the seat than a Democrat would be a Yankee.

          • boobert

Never say never. Their other senator was first elected as a democrat.

        • BeaverTales

They need to ask Moore direct to his face if he still thinks Obama is not American when he calls the pedo accusation against him “fake news”

Sad to say but there could be a woman coming out every day and folks will still vote for him.

  • boobert

I like the SNL host joking about the dress. She really did wear it to the premier. I thought the hair looked like the coming to america girl, and apparently so did she, lol.

  • Cuberly Deux

Ok, there’s a scene in season II of Lady Dynamite where Maria’s agent drives by in a Tesla. Which has the sound of the flying cars from the Jetsons.

    I love this show.

    Really???

    • leastyebejudged

      it’s a coup d’etat

      • Gerald Parks

It could be said THAT has already hppened.
One need only look at the current Republican POTUS, his cabinet and the US Senate and House of Representatives under Republican leadership!

    • Reality.Bites

Not only that, they’re essentially trying to delay not out of fear of losing, but out of fear of winning.

      • Gerald Parks

        Ture THAT!
We know how despicable the GOP/Republican Party is…Judge Merrick and the US Supreme Court comes immediately to mind!

  • netxtown

Delay the election??? Oh hell no. Fucking repubes were all about ‘the show must go on’ for the dotard asswipe. Ol’ Roy should get the same.

(For those that don’t know…Ol’ Roy is a house brand of dogfood at WalMart.)

    • UrsusArctos 🐻

I had thoughts on the GOP having to “Eat their own dog food” too. Unfortunately we all get to partake if/when he is “elected”. *sigh*
