Fake News: AP Debunks Homocon Gateway Pundit

The Associated Press took aim at homocon site Gateway Pundit today in their weekly debunking of fake news. They write:

NOT REAL: One Year Ago Hillary Clinton Became First Losing Presidential Candidate in 50 Years to Not Concede in Public Speech

THE FACTS: Clinton gave a public concession speech the morning after Election Day, although she did not take the podium immediately after the Nov. 8, 2016, race was called for Donald Trump. The claim by the conservative Gateway Pundit blog that Clinton鈥檚 delayed concession was the first in 50 years of presidential elections is false.

Democrat John Kerry waited until the next day to publicly concede to Republican President George W. Bush in 2004; Al Gore conceded five weeks after the 2000 election to concede to Bush while the race鈥檚 results were contested. Republican President Gerald Ford let his wife, Betty, deliver his concession speech to Jimmy Carter in 1976 because his voice was hoarse from campaigning.

Gateway Pundit is infamous for posting wild conspiracy claims and outright lies. Over the summer, a Michigan lawyer hinted at a lawsuit after the site falsely named a local man as the Nazi driver that killed Heather Heyer. Fellow homocon Matt Drudge regularly links Gateway Pundit, driving massive traffic their way.

Bias is real, echo chambers are real, yes. But they’re normal and have always existed in the mainstream.

What is new in the mainstream, at least in modern times, is this insane conspiracy-minded belief in any batshittery that comes along, while normal unremarkable “yes this really is how the world works” facts are disbelieved.

        • Bluto

Yes, our bias is that we’re receptive to logic, we embrace truth & shun bullshit.

      • Lars Littlefield

I want to hear that Trump really isn’t an asshole and that he really believes in protecting the environment, believes in climate change, that ALL people deserve equal freedom and treatment under the law, that the LGBT are just as normal as the rest of humanity, the rich need to pay more taxes, and that bloviating isn’t nice.

But I can hold my breath until any of those things happen and die.

My point is that I want to hear things I believe in, too. But it’s not going to happen under the Trump brand of reality.

        • bkmn

It is one of the big differences between the left and the right. The right hears/sees something that fits into their world views and accept it. The left tends to question things more and calls for accountability from sources that screw up stories.

side story that kind of makes your point, on Tuesday I was working outside our polling place (anti-gerrymandering petition)…two judicial candidates were represented, one by the candidate’s wife, the other a friend of the candidate. CNN political commentator is suggesting that if Roy Moore wins he would be required to be sworn in but then it is likely that the full Senate would vote to expel him. It takes two thirds majority they all think that they would have that majority. And then the Alabama Governor would appoint the senator to take his place, probably Luther strange

    • Karl Dubhe

Then another special election, and Roy will run again.

      Right?

    • safari

Apparently there hasn’t been a Senator expelled since the Civil War. There have been cases requesting expulsion, but they have been resolved by resignation, terming out, or not coming to meeting the requirements.
      https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/briefing/Expulsion_Censure.htm

      • gaycuckhubby

Right. Which would take cooperation from the senator. Roy Moore won’t give them that. And I think they would have the votes to expel.

        • boatboy_srq

Not sure the Senate Dems would align on this. Strange is likely to be more amenable to McConnell’s agenda – and anything that impedes that could be useful.

I can see Moore amending GOTea “must pass” bills with items he thinks are acceptable but whifh would be poison pills to the rest, causing the agenda to flounder. And based on his campaign language, he’d be thwarting McConnell as promised so that wouldn’t hurt him at all. Meanwhile McConnell’s dreams of a perpetual GOTea government go down in flames, which suits us just fine.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

I think before the Dems should agree to this, it would take actually putting Garland or someone even more liberal on SCOTUS if an opening happens. That’s the price I would freaking demand. AND I’d demand payment first, expulsion after.

  • They just can’t stop. The right has been beating up on her for 40 years. (I go back with the Clintons to Arkansas and they were doing it even back then.) It’s not that I think she’s beyond criticism (I said plenty about her two years ago and also back in 2008) but there’s something particular about her that they love to hate. It’s a fetish. I swear some of them rail against her while jerking off. And even now that she’s out of politics for good, they can’t let it go. It’s a pathology. No she didn’t come out and take their public humiliation. She won. She and Gore both won and Kerry probably really won the electoral college (the ballots in Ohio for 2004 were destroyed making a recount impossible). I can’t even imagine what that’s like. I’ve lost things I thought I should have won but not anywhere near that scale. not even within exponents of that!

O/T but my husband had to work until 10 or so tonight.

One of ours loved to work the cob after we had gnawed it down. I’m sure he would have liked the whole kernel cob, but he never got that chance.

MSNBC is reporting that La David Johnson, one of the soldiers killed in Niger was found with his hands bound behind his back and bullet hole through the head.

      Horrible

      • safari

I’d rather we not learned this. His poor widow has gone through so much.

        • jmax

Seriously. What is the point of releasing that type of information? It does no one any good.

          • gaycuckhubby

If they didn’t release it we would be yelling “cover up” and demand more info

          • jmax

The soldier is dead and his family is grieving. That type of info can be available but kept confidential. Maybe I’m being overly sensitive, but I certainly didn’t need to hear that.

          • Sam_Handwich

the information came from a farmer in Niger who found Johnson’s body

          • Sam_Handwich

The villagers’ accounts come as the Niger operation is under intense scrutiny in the United States, with lawmakers expressing concern that they have received insufficient or conflicting information about what happened. The Pentagon is conducting an investigation into the attack in Niger, where the U.S. military is helping the Nigerien government confront a threat by militants associated with the Islamic State and al-Qaida.

Boubacar, a resident of Tongo Tongo, said in a phone interview that he informed the village’s chief after seeing Johnson’s body. “His two arms were tied behind his back,” he said. The chief called Nigerien military forces, who dispatched troops to retrieve Johnson’s remains.

            https://www.stripes.com/news/middle-east/2.1198/us-soldier-in-niger-ambush-was-bound-and-apparently-executed-villagers-say-1.497336

          • BobSF_94117

It makes whoever did it guilty of a crime, even if they are engaged in war.

          • jmax

That information is important if we were prosecuting the killers. I just don’t think it needs to be made public. I can’t imagine how it must feel to be a family survivor and have to hear details about his death that aren’t necessary.

          • BobSF_94117

The fight for decent treatment of prisoners requires that violators be exposed. It’s unfortunate for the families, or course.

          • jmax

My main concern is the families. I don’t believe people who are willing to kill and/or die for a religion have any concerns about violating rules of conventional war.

          • BobSF_94117

They might be concerned about the consequences. We, and pretty much all other military forces, make a special effort to go after executioners. And when executioners are captured in the course of battle, if it’s known they are executioners, they face prosecution and severe punishment.

          • marshlc

If he had to suffer it, we can stand to hear about it.

          • jmax

I wish I hadn’t heard about it. The man was killed serving his country and that’s all I need to know. Details like this seem ghoulish to me.

          • marshlc

My feeling is that if we had to hear the details of the death of every serviceperson killed, we’d be a little less likely to send them into combat.

          • jmax

Perhaps. My concern is the effect on the family of the soldier. I’m guessing they don’t want to hear the gruesome details.

        • JCF

I think it goes to “WTF are we doing there?” It was also tough to learn that Pat Tillman died from friendly fire, but since these soldiers are fighting and dying on OUR behalf, we need to know.

My grandpa was a WWI vet, and smoked two packs of Camels a day, up until the day he died. After his death, my grandma used to wear an orange, crepe-paper poppy on her jacket lapel on Veteran’s Day.

      • Jukesgrrl

Ever go to England on their Veteran’s Day? Everybody wears a poppy from the airport workers when you land, office workers, cab drivers, presenters on TV 鈥 they even sell them to us tourists. The money goes to vet charities. They have big parades on Sunday and the Queen and her whole family lay wreaths on the war dead tombs. It’s very moving.

the other problem though is, her congressional seat is up for grabs.

        • AlternativeQuacks

She might do that as a career move. Arizona as a whole is more Republican-leaning than her district. She might be making the following calculation: If there is a Democratic wave in 2018 (which it looks like there will be) then her chances of winning Flake’s seat might be better than her chances of getting re-elected to her own seat in the House.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

      In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

      In Flanders fields.

Not at all true for actors. That’s a clich茅ed stereotype that mostly exists in old Warner Bros movies. Actors work fucking hard, struggle mightily to make a living, and get very little thanks for it.

        • JCF

          I’m afraid you’re right.

    • Blake J Butler

I’m going to let this take this course and whatever it is, it is what it is.

i am hoping this isn’t true, people are coming out and giving their stories of sexual assault given the spotlight on the issue at the moment, and others are exploiting actual legitimate sexual assault cases to defame others over lies.

      • Natty Enquirer

Let’s keep in mind that the same climate which encourages victims to come forward also encourages scammers looking for a payday.

        • Jean-Marc in Canada

True enough. Caution yes, but not vilification or deriding of the accuser just because the accused is “our guy.”

        • DaddyRay

False accusers where the claim falls apart under the slightest scrutiny are the most vile, they really hurt the actual victims because it gives abusers something to point to and raise doubt.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Alas, this is not entirely surprising…not that’s it’s George per se, just that with the floodgates now open, many of those we’ve looked up to will prove to have feet of clay…such is the human condition. The question now is, will George own up or fight it? This all hinges on the truthfulness of the story, but we must be consistent with our concerns, be it Louis C.K, Roy Moore, Weinstein or Takei. I suspect there are more names, from many ideological/sexual/political spectrums to come.

    • greenmanTN

The accuser seems to imply he was drugged. If that is true it鈥檚 terrible. If that part is not true the rest of it sounds like a sexual 鈥減ass鈥 that was not welcome. Some of these allegations (not necessarily this one) are getting out of hand IMO. 鈥淚 was in a gay bar and so-and-so groped me and I was scarred for life!鈥 seems a bit OTT.

      • worstcultever

Let鈥檚 beware of scammers, sure – but let鈥檚 also be wary of the minimizing/normalizing mentality that can be a product of sheer overload

    • worstcultever

Another kick in the gut – of many more still to come

Well dammit, too bad – it is past time to muck out the stables and hold all abusers to account for abusive acts

If this was a single fucked-up episode (I hope) on George’s part, he can redeem himself by speaking and doing right things, esp toward the victim

      • JCF

“time to muck out the stables and hold all abusers to account for abusive acts”

It’s really the only way (“you’re only as sick as your secrets”).

    • Moebym of the Returners

      Fuck. Just fuck.

But I have to believe the accuser, even if the accused is someone I deeply admire.

      • Ernest Endevor

Why? This is turning into the recovered memory panic.

    • BobSF_94117

People are losing their minds. The “victim” says “It is one of those stories you tell with a group of people when people
are recounting bizarre instances in their lives, this always comes up. I
have been telling it for years, but I am suddenly very nervous telling
      it.”

How many assault victims do you guys know who regale fellow party-goers with tales of their assaults?

      • SoCalGal20

Well, Harry Dreyfuss said he spun his experience of being groped by Kevin Spacey into a party story because it was way for him to control it. I can definitely see some people doing that.

        • BobSF_94117

Yes, in retrospect he has decided to come up with some explanation for why he thought it was a perfectly fine thing to laugh about with friends at parties. Very creative this “control it” idea.

People who have gone through emotionally traumatic assaults do not talk about it that way. They just don’t.

          • SoCalGal20

Oh fuck off. People deal with things in different ways. And, wow, some people MINIMIZE (to themselves and others) a traumatic experience to have some control over it. Also, welcome to my block list.

    https://twitter.com/meakoopa/status/929095173723828224

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Yes and no. While it is true that Weinstein and Spacey are in the same industry and are pretty much toast, the sad truth is, in the grand scheme of things women will be believed (rightly so) more readily than their gay male counterparts. It’s just a fact of life. Society still harbors a “but he’s gay how can he be a victim” mentality. Consider that even str8 men who are raped still aren’t believed and they’re str8. It is getting better, to be sure, but alas, it still is very much a str8/gay thang.

      • Yeah, there’s a LOT of work that needs to be done to shake off the old gender norms.

      • gaycuckhubby

I guess your right. I just thought his examples were shit.

In fact all day long people here were saying the opposite… saying Moore would only suffer consequences if he abused a boy.

        • Jean-Marc in Canada

Oh, I agree, his examples ARE shit, but sadly, they have the ring of truth to them. As for the notion of an abused boy making it worse, there’s validity to that argument…especially given all the BuyBull excuses being proffered.

      • JCF

“in the grand scheme of things women will be believed (rightly so) more readily than their gay male counterparts”

I disagree. Men will be believed—for all the wrong reasons. Anything concerning Teh Gay (victims OR perps) will be believe—because they’re all considered equally guilty.

In Het World, the default is ALWAYS to believe the men and say, re the women, (to quote Samantha Bee), “bitches be lyin'”.

Let me cite a different circumstance: abortion. Rethugs pointedly will NOT give women a “health exception” to their abortion bans. Why? “Bitches be lyin'”: women will LIE re their health, to get their Satanic abortions. (/s)

Under patriarchy, it’s a bedrock foundation: “Women Lie” (and conversely, straight men are noble, truthful beings).

If anything gay men are more dismissive of gay-on-gay harassement. “Oh its just gay, sex positive culture”

    • Refugay

I thinks he’s right in the sense that Spacey admittedly assaulted an underage boy and Moore allegedly assaulted an underage girl. Spacey was immediately and nearly universally condemned while there are many defending Moore’s actions, whether or not they actually happened, by saying it’s okay for a man to have sex with a teenage female, even under 18, and going so far as to make it biblical. That is some sick fucking logic that these fuckers would never apply to gay sex of any kind. So there is a clear double standard here. The main allegations against Weinstein were, from what I know, not primarily about sex with underage girls and I think less comparable.

      • gaycuckhubby

Doctor told me that they just want to check some things — not to be worried. It involved a huge needle. I do not feel like getting IV sedation for it. I would rather grit my teeth for a few minutes and get it over with.
    Bone marrow biopsy and aspiration

    • JCF

      {{{Eddi}}}

The only biopsy I’ve ever had done, a breast biopsy (I was fine), was done under local anesthetic.

      • That is harder I think — all they are doing is taking a sample of some bone marrow. You can basically drive yourself there and home — the entire procedure doesn’t take long. I have some painkillers I can take for it I guess- and not tell the doctor. They numb the area the needle goes in. Sounds bad right?

        • BobSF_94117

Why in the world would you withhold info from your doctor? If you’re worried about the pain (I would be) talk to him/her.

          • Told me it does not warrant a pain killer. The doctor is very very cool. I am not gonna worry too much I guess. I live in Palm Beach County painkillers are a dirty word around here — we are a drug capital). Rush Limbaugh caused problems several years ago when he was arrested with oxy scripts.

          • JCF

Argh, this is always the issue: pendulum swings between one extreme or the other. No Drugs vs Drugs-Like-Candy.

          • BobSF_94117

I wouldn’t withhold info or concerns. Tell him/her you want an option at least, whether that’s a single dose or a prescription you can tear up if you don’t need it.

          • When my mom had her biopsy they gave her a script that has been laying around in the drawer for two years. That is how druggy our family is (not) — no one is exactly is into painkillers. I went and filled it for her just in case she was in pain when the anaesthetic wore off.

          • BobSF_94117

I’m not much for taking medications but if someone was gonna stick a big needle into me, I’d want at least the psychological benefit of knowing there was something I could do to alleviate any pain that might follow. Actual pain I’ll put up with, but I’m a wuss when it comes to possible pain. 馃檪

          • The bad thing is thinking about it. Frankly, going to the dentist probably is rougher. The entire thing is over in a few minutes.

          • fuzzybits

            I think it’ll be fine.

          • fuzzybits

Most likely you could take OTC pain relief and just use an ice pack on it afterwards.

        • JCF

I had my BFF w/ me for moral support, but I didn’t really need her for transportation. Left w/ an ice-pack in my bra, that was it.

          • My mom had that — and she was fine too. She walked right out of the place and did not need anything, I drove her there. Good to here!

        • fuzzybits

From what I read there might be some pain, but very brief.

        • Treant

Do not drive yourself there and home. Even for minor nasal surgery, which was an effortless snap, they recommend being driven if at all possible as some people do freak out, or have a delayed reaction to the stress.

    • ChrisMorley

This page discusses both how it feels and anaesthesia. https://www.webmd.com/cancer/lymphoma/bone-marrow-aspiration-and-biopsy#3

Talk about your concerns and ask questions.

      • Thank you! He said I that I the odds of me having blood cancer are very very low, he just has to check some things.

    • Treant

      (((HUGE HUGS)))

      • Thanks. Nothing much to worry about . I have a large spleen and no one knows why. Everything is checking out ok, but they need to make sure that nothing is triggering it. Some people just have big spleens. If anything were wrong with me the rest of the blood work would be off and it is not. I cannot play tackle touch football 馃檪 – seriously I have to avoid rough contact sports

        • Treant

Oh. That could be an excellent selling point. “Babe, I have an absolutely enormous spleen. And you know what that means!”

          “A big, floppy pancreas?”

Still, it’s a little scary to not know what’s wrong–or if anything’s wrong!

          • You are right. Mine is “enlarged” and not yet “freakishly enormous”. (I am six foot one, it is 19 centimeters). I have no symptoms that i notice. . But this has been going on for three years– and it is getting a big bigger. However, my blood work is checking out ok — platelet count is a bit low though. They have mentioned that the Spleen might have to come out eventually if it gets much bigger. Nothing is wrong with me that they can find. They have done tests for stuff.

    • Sam_Handwich

{{{{Eddie}}}} Mrs. Cleaver will make you a pot roast.

    • fuzzybits

The last time I was in the hospital they had to drain fluid from my lungs. They went through my back with a long needle. They laid me down and I couldn’t catch my breath. The rest of the hospital stay I had the head of the bed up.

      • Well I hope you are OK! That sound very painful. I have never been hospitalized for anything major like that — and I do not envy what you want through. hugs.

        • fuzzybits

Thanks ,it’s a story in itself involving an 11 day stay after a ruptured appendix the year before and not knowing I was carrying infection for a year in my abdominal cavity. I wound up with sepsis and was in the ICU for half of the stay.

    • As everyone else wisely said, speak to your doctor about your concerns. But I’ll offer this much: It is WAY less debilitating to have a procedure done done under local than to be knocked out. General anesthesia can take weeks to get over and the truth is it’s more dangerous than less extreme methods.

If you’re feeling especially anxious, one thing you could ask for is some kind of anti-anxiety med in addition to the local.

Honestly, I have an insane gag reflex, to the point where I can barely endure even routine dental care. They give me tranqs, so I’m doped up to the point where I’m barely aware of what they’re doing.

    • E.J.

Sorry to be so late. I had a bone marrow biopsy done with just a local and would not do it again. How uncomfortable the procedure is depends on how hard (dense) your hip bone is since they have to get through the bone to get to the marrow. The bone also has nerves on the surface (I was told) that are not always numbed by the local. I only did the local because I could not find anyone else to drive. Good luck.

OT: Well, I was so annoyed at this Moore shit and I did receive a new lavender fragrance oil and a nice new red mica colorant. And a couple new forms. So I did some experimenting this evening.

Soap #1 is a highly bubbly, honey-infused, rose-colored guest soap scented with Victorian rose and a dash of violet and cedarwood.

Soap #2 is…well, currently kind of brown, but will turn into a similarly highly bubbly, honey-infused, lavender-hued guest soap scented with lavender and dashes of musk and eucalyptus.

Soap #3 is…again, yellow and brown, but will turn into a moderately bubbly, honey-infused, white-and-lavender-layered bar soap scented with lavender.

All three are in the oven to push them to saponify faster.

  • Here’s how the Kremlin has had its puppet President eviscerate America’s power in the world without firing a single shot.
    https://twitter.com/vmsalama/status/929205447562756097
Reports this week are that State is already operating at less than half its normal capacity and it’s getting worse with each passing day.

Military power and Diplomacy go hand-in-hand, in terms of projecting strength. Trump and Tillerson, both favorites of Putin, are deliberately and unilaterally destroying the diplomacy half of that equation.

As a consequence, America’s military will become weaker, too. Just like Putin wants. An America riven with chaos, isolated, and ruined.

    • Sam_Handwich

      twisted, disgusting and scary

    • Lazycrockett

      and the Republicans do nothing.

      • I honestly think most of them are simply too cowardly to object.

Some of them can only see the opportunities to plunder, until the day comes when America collapses or they’re run out of office.

And some are willing and eager accomplices.

        • Sam_Handwich

the bottom line is that it still doesn’t hurt them with their stupid base

    • fuzzybits

      The nightmare continues.

    • BobSF_94117

Once they’ve gutted State, they’re going to “reconsider” and fill all the empty positions with Trumpists. The Congress is refusing to cut the budget for State because the nearly unanimously object to Trump’s and Tillerson’s plans.

      • I don’t believe they will, Bob, because there’s nothing stopping them from filling all the empty posts with Trumpists right now. There’s tons of room and tons of deputy and undersecretary positions available, as well as even more career spots sitting vacant.

Ask yourself, why would a man so loved by Putin and with zero experience as a diplomat be appointed Sec State? Why are all the positions under him being left empty when they can be filled with Trump loyalists?

Whether Donald himself is in on the plot, I don’t know. He’s a staggeringly ignorant man who can be talked into anything though nothing more than flattery. This is why I believe the directives are coming from elsewhere. Someplace which would directly benefit from having a defanged, declawed, and neutered America, with shattered alliances and broken regional agreements, isolated and ignored as a world power-broker, deemed too untrustworthy to even negotiate with anymore.

And that place would be Moscow.

        • BobSF_94117

Oh, I agree that this is for Russia.

Most of these people would not be leaving without the excuse of budget cuts. The president can’t just replace civil service employees at will.

When I was a kid we lived in Pelston, Michigan, known as the icebox of Michigan. General Motors used to rent out the rooms in my Grandmother’s motel there in the winter to do cold weather testing on the new models. The cars were stored behind the motel away from the road. We used to go over to see the new cars before they were released the next year. All that excitement in the winter but nothing to do but watch the grass grow in the summer. It was a very small town back then, no traffic light.

        • wayne

I’ve been through Pelston many times. I grew up in northern Michigan and now live between Traverse City and Petoskey. And yes I should have put my snow tires on earlier, I needed them today.

I lived several years in Traverse City, great place. I still have family in the Petoskey area, but since they are all Trump supporters we don’t talk much at all anymore. I suspect it’s something in their water since they didn’t start out with brain damage.

65 here in Phoenix (10:42 MST). Should climb to 85 tomorrow. Between now and May temps will be lovely, but need rain. NEED RAIN!

      • TuuxKabin

You just about always need rain in the desert, sure.

Afraid to check the temps, can’t be much different between outside and here. Suppose to be 22. Either the boiler, the pipes or the radiator in this five floor, former town house coop are not functioning. The only warm apartment is the first floor, directly above the boiler, and the second floor. From 3 up here to 5. COLD. And the four skylights we have conduct the cold real well. Thanks gawds ane the lard madkniter in NOLA knit me a rockin’ red pussy hat. I all but sleep in it these last few days.

        • Nychta

That reminds me of Chicago apartments friends and I rented in the early 70s. During the winter landlords were mighty stingy with the heat, so at night we’d turn on the oven, open the door, and sit around it with our chilled feel propped up practically inside the oven. Dangerous, I guess, but it was either that or build a fire. Crocheting was popular among my crowd, for good reason. Glad to hear you have a nice warm pussy hat!

          • TuuxKabin

I used to bake potatoes, reheat frozen store bought pies and things to justify turning the oven on for heat. Granted, temporary solution, but satisfying as well.

We took matters in our own hands, and the treasurer didn’t have to pull her purse out of her bra to call and pay for service.

On line, helpful information saved the weekend. We had to turn the radiators off and shed a couple of layers of clothing. Plus I made a pork shoulder roast, with purple cauliflower with the roasted pork on a bed of fennel.

Thankfully it was a one day cold snap, but laid waste to the chiltipin, serranao and jalapeno and remaining flowering plants. We brought the rosemary, lavender, geraniums, lemon balm and cat nip inside.

Owe ya’ a note and new visual. Bunch of ’em at the copy shop. Think I’ll mail it rather than attach to email.

Hmmmm, sounds like someone’s taking their howler monkeys for a walk this morning. A couple of dueling screaming children, prolly toddlers, too cold for them are across the street, howling. Poor things.

Warming up to 47 and sunny. We’re in our winter quarters. The southern exposed studio gets a lot of sun and light, the rear one, with the deck, dark and gloomy, except for the view of the deck, now laid to waste by the cold snap. At least we have a row of evergreen across the back side to have some greenery to look at.

            More, anon. Cheers.

In fact my 3 favorite stories are very funny, about the same 3 good ole boys with the worst luck in the world, one of whom seems to be singled out by the universe for public humiliation. In the first story they go camping and one of them gets bitten on the dick by a baby rattlesnake and the other two have to argue over who is going to suck out the poison (it is not erotic), then things really go downhill from there when another group of campers from their hometown happens upon them mid-procedure…

My jaw hit the floorboards – at that point they had been married 15 years and they found out they were sterile 2 years in. I would have ended the marriage right then an there.

      • Yeah, also, when they’re that young, they’re still used to Mama giving them food.

        • Treant

I get the feeling that Fizz is going to be pretty easy to socialize. Just break out the cat treats.

  • boobert

I know there are many cat lovers on here. Do you think it’s right to feed 25 feral cats running around unrestricted in a seniors development ? At least 4 of them are pregnant and they are becoming a nuisance. If something isn’t done ,there will be many more soon.

    • Treant

At some point, somebody’s going to have to trap and spay or neuter. Otherwise the cat colony will simply expand to the limit of its food source, both supplied and hunted.

Kittens are pretty easy to socialize and there are plenty of shelters that should be able to help you out with re-homing them. Adults…are more challenging. They may need to live their lives in the wild, but unable to have any more kittens.

      • What Treant says. There are folks who specialize in trapping & neutering feral cats. Some can be re-domesticated and those who can’t be at least won’t breed more.

But feeding them isn’t a good idea. If you don’t, then only as many as the local food supplies will support will stick around and the rest will leave for fuller dumpsters elsewhere. Providing food will only attract more.

    • DaddyRay

I would be concerned about the cats spreading disease – that being said any bit of joy and comfort seniors get from feeding kitties isn’t such a bad thing

      • boobert

It’s 25 now and growing fast . This woman has been told several times to stop.

        • Treant

25 now means 75 in a year. Minus those that are hit by cars, die of diseases that could have been treated, and so on…

        • safari

Go for love. Does she love them? And their children? And their grandchildren? It’s not hate. They don’t need to be killed.

        • greenmanTN

I鈥檝e talked here lots about my house of cats. They all came from a single feral female, 3 litters in a little over a year, 4+4+5=13. 1 fertile female, 13 kittens. Mama and 8 kittens have been spayed/neutered. 2 little kittens were killed by a neighbor. 3 kittens still need to be spayed/neutered.

Neighbors are taking care of some, I have the rest. But multiply that by the many un-鈥渇ixed鈥 cats and dogs out there, the resulting disease and in the case of dogs pack behavior, and it鈥檚 a nightmare waiting to happen. It has to be stopped ASAP.

        • fuzzybits

The problem is cats are very territorial and will still stay there looking for food and it’s horrible to just let them starve.

      • safari

Just. Sterilize. Bound the rate of growth. I say this because I *know* people who have fed strays over the years in places that are cat-lover havens. I love them. They love them. The cats don’t need to be killed but they need to be sterilized.

    • safari

It’s difficult. The humane answer is: no. They *need* to be sterilized. That is the only priority. Everything else will lead to hearts being torn. They needn’t be killed. *Sterilize now*.

    • greenmanTN

The prevailing wisdom is that the best thing to do with a feral cat colony like that is Catch, Sterilize, Release. The theory is that if you catch them and either have them removed or 鈥減ut down鈥 others will just take their place. If you C,S,R they keep that place in the local ecosystem filled but do not overwhelm it with unrestrained breeding. In some places there are charities that exist to do just that.

      • safari

The problem, though, is that others say “Oh, look, cat safety. *deposit*”.

….George Takei is now being accused of sexual assault by a former model in 1981.
Hoping this is the like the George Clooney accuser from a few weeks ago but if not… bleh.

    • Believe that two things are true:
      1. There are way, way more people out there who are sexual assaulters/predators than anyone wants to admit.
      2. One of the top reasons for this continuing to be the case is victims being silenced.

      • I should also add that just one sexual predator will on average in his or her (but usually it’s ‘his’) lifetime victimize way more than just 1 or 2 people.

Same as there’s no fucking way Moore only dated the four women who were young teen girls when he went after him. There will be many more.

      • Ninja0980

        I know.
It’s just that for me, a couple of the Clinton accusers (who have called Trump accusers liars), the Duke Lacrosse case and a few other very, very rare cases always give me pause.
Most people won’t lie about sexual assault but a rare few will for various reasons.
And the sad thing, those people WILL take advantage of this.
IMO, the George Cloney accuser was one.
Want to be the case with Takei too but if not…
We’ll just have to accept we all posted stuff in support of a monster on here over the years…

        • I know. And all it takes is one sick attention-seeking asshole to make it difficult or impossible for anyone to listen to and believe the 99 out of 100 rest of us who are telling the truth.

Here’s a clue that I look for in any accusation: Is this person telling their account just trying to get it off their chest? Or have they filed charges? Or do they indeed seem to be seeking attention and/or renumeration. Does the act of coming forward itself COST them more than any hope of justice or restitution? And finally, do their stories hang together?

The thing about the Bill Clinton accusers is they *were* given a chance to tell their story to investigators. Who then looked into their claims and found them riddled with inconsistencies and falsehoods. Ms Willey’s story, for example, kept changing every time she told it.

Also, there’s monsters, and then there are monsters. I honestly don’t know what to think about Takei. I just don’t.

          • Ninja0980

            Same here.
If others come out, then we’ll know.
But the Clooney accuser who came out a few weeks ago.. sad to say her past already put a red flag to anything she claimed and since no one else has forward, have to believe she was trying to get 15 minutes of fame that had faded away.
Have to see if that’s the case with Takei but if it’s not, good bye and good riddance.

          • That’s the thing: A liar’s story nearly always falls apart immediately.

          • Reality.Bites

From his description of it he was drugged and assaulted. It’s also possible for the events to have happened and for him to have been a lot more drunk than he realized and that Takei realized so that what Takei thought was a seduction was sexual activity without the possibility of consent. Blackout drunk.

At the time there was a different attitude in society and legally towards the responsibilities of people to obtain informed consent and at what point people were no longer considered capable of giving consent.

If Takei drugged him in any way without his knowledge, that’s sexual assault then and now.

If Brunton didn’t take anything he wasn’t aware he was taking, then under the standards of the time, what happened wouldn’t make the cut legally and most people would consider it at most poor judgement on Takei’s part.

        • Reality.Bites

Most people won’t lie about sexual assault but some people will lie about anything for personal advantage.

Does anyone think Ann Coulter or Donald Trump wouldn’t lie about being sexually assaulted if it was to their advantage, even a tiny, unimportant advantage?

Over the last couple of years we’ve seen enough to know just how widespread being absolute scum really is. The Trump voters, the Bernie bros – they’ve all made it pretty clear that if they haven’t committed a sexual assault it’s certainly not because it offends their morality.

    • safari

We’re in the looking glass… it will all work out.

    • Treant

Insufficient data. I’m extremely disinclined to hang anybody on a single accusation that currently has no corroboration. Now, if more comes out, or it’s corroborated, that’s a very different story.

      • Ninja0980

        Same here.
I know that isn’t popular but I’ve seen enough cases to know that while it’s very rare, false accusations can and do happen.

        • Lazycrockett

          Then the slippery slope begins.

          • Lazycrockett

            again.

        • Treant

I’m quite happy with being unpopular, actually. I think 12 years of being socially ostracized in school has left me pretty inured to it. 馃檪

Besides, just knowing what people have accused me of in my lifetime leads me to be disinclined to hang anybody else on first accusation.

          • Ninja0980

This was news to A and C.

There are a lot of gay men in this forum. We don’t like trolls.

    • My outrage-o-meter gets itchy as we trend into “I was at his apartment, got drunk, passed out, and he got handsy” when it is two guys, particularly 36 years ago. Yes, it’s possible to be he victim of sexual assault if you’re gay, but the circumstances here seem to me to be less egregious than say, the Kevin Spacey scenario. I wonder if the story has gotten any embellishment over the years, and really how traumatizing it would be for a gay man. Am I making excuses because I like Takei? Probably. But if the guy had been INTO him, this wouldn’t even be a story, it would have just been “that time I got with Sulu back in the 80s.”

      • Reality.Bites

What also makes a difference with someone like Takei or Clooney is that they are both guys who’ve always seemed decent in the way they conducted their personal lives over a period of decades. Takei was a fairly minor celebrity compared to Clooney of course, but it’s fair to say the tabloids would have run with any dirt of any kind they could find about Clooney.

They are neither the self-righteously moral types nor the clearly sleazy types, so we are surprised when such an accusation comes.

This is completely off topic but I was involved in a discussion about a topic that we talk that often here. Decriminalizing sex work. I think most of us are in favor of that. But what does the oversight look like? What does the protection look like? And what responsibilities does state and federal government have in protecting the workers?

    • TuuxKabin

Early ’70’s, living in Amsterdam, all of that was in place. Decriminalization. Health check ups. It was another business revenue, apparently, with government oversight. First encounter walking thru a red light district, like a strip of boutique shops. ”Vendors’ in various poses, settings and decor. All women at the time. Families walking thru the district on their way to and fro, no big deal. It appeared controlled, rather well. A lot of happy people in that district, and most of Holland, for that matter. That was then.

This is Ontario. You would go to a government owned and operated brothel and you’d get whatever sexual partner and act the government decided is best for you and division of labour at the SCBO.

The government, in its infinite wisdom, has decreed we need 150 weed shops for all of Ontario.

Sorry. I was projecting how Ontario would handle it if sex work were decriminalized, based on how they’re handling the impending legalization of marijuana, where they’re setting up a needlessly bureaucratic, government-owned marijuana retailer in not nearly enough locations to satisfy demand.

I’ve been discussing with my s.o. how the GOP has become a tribalistic cult. It’s hatred against various social changes has morphed through a series of developments into a distrust of reason and evidence, science and intelligence. The result is that much of the conservative movement seems trapped in a worldview increasingly fantastical in nature, with conspiracy theory being a primary response to the world, and with them being in thrall to a degraded value system that gives them permission to dismiss facts that don’t feel good.

Now, with the rationalization of Moore’s child molestation we see a new level of debasement. They either sickeningly excuse it, or they go into conspiracy mode.

Also, both have extremely punchable faces. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ed7948b07c656773fa9b0c22dd9b224e7d0d98070d1c79212b8384f895b53ee2.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/4e6b3ed97b40e91db5e5153b926931a0e990fa414d4759f3d93539103101f025.png
