Trump Praises China’s “Unfair” Trade Practices, Blames Previous Presidents For Letting Them Get Away With It

The Hill reports:

President Trump in China on Thursday blamed past administrations instead of Beijing for “unfair” trade practices, offering a starkly different tone from the rhetoric he used during his campaign.

Trump said during an event in Beijing that he does not place blame on China for what he described as “one-sided and unfair” trade practices, noting he gives “China great credit.”

“I don’t blame China,” he said. “After all, who can blame a country for being able to take advantage of another country for benefit if their citizens? I give China great credit.”

During his campaign, Trump regularly said things like this: “We can’t continue to allow China to rape our country and that’s what they’re doing.”

  • lymis

Of COURSE Trump praises shady loophole-strewn business practices where the fault lies in the person who was stupid enough to trust that the other was operating in good faith.

It’s how he’s lived his entire life.

  • AmeriCanadian

All I can say is that Xi must have given him a YUUUGE contract to build more hotels in China.

    • lymis

And golf courses. Never forget the golf courses.

    • Mark Née Fuzz

Flattery and a red carpet greeting go a long way with Trump.

      • Todd20036

You aren’t even being remotely sarcastic, even if you meant to be.

        • Mark Née Fuzz

For once in my life, not sarcastic. Merely stating a fact.

    • Rambie

Plus a bunch of non-binding “contracts” and re-announcements of deals already in the works for signed recently. Anyone want to take bets on how quickly these non-binding contracts never come about?

    • jerry

Within a couple days after the election last year, I think China granted Ivanka trademark rights that otherwise take years, bribes, and miles of red tape. Earlier this year, they did the same for Trump for multiple trademarks that had previously been rejected.

    • Stubenville

How is that anything other than a bribe?

Damn. Could you imagine if extraterrestrials landed, and had to meet with this idiot?

  • Mark Née Fuzz

I had wondered how long it would take for a reason to call him a fucking idiot today. Turns out, it wasn’t long. Not long at all.

    • AmeriCanadian

Time zone difference. Isn’t he 12 hours ahead? By all accounts he’s late.

  • Ninja0980

Well, he’s fulfilled his stupid quota for the day.

    • Dazzer

You poor, sweet, naive thing. His quota for stupidity is inexhaustible.

The level of stupidity in Trump are the only hidden depths he has – and they’re not that hidden.

    • 2guysnamedjoe

      He’s on the Unlimited Plan.

  • Stogiebear

Someone in China should come up with and market a line of portable toilets/outhouses and plaster Trump’s name and face all over them. Fitting use to put his brand to.

Why don’t they arrest him while they have the chance. China is on a big anti-corruption purge. I can’t think of a better target for such a program. He must have broken some law. I’d be more than happy to see Air Force come home while he cools his twitter thumbs in a Chinese prison.

  • Leo

They couldn’t do something because it’s fucking hard. The deplorables are going to say he DID SOMETHING AGAINST CHINA OMGZ but he hasn’t, and won’t. All he does is talk.

    • thatotherjean

Thank God for that. If he carried out his threats, this continent and large swaths of others would already be smoking cinders.

  • Tawreos

To be fair they didn’t grant Trump the trademarks he was asking for until after he became president so he had no deal to be nice to them during the campaign.

  • Ernest Endevor

Perhaps today is the day we’ll wake up and find out it’s all been a dream and that he’s really Bob Newhart.

    • lymis

So THAT’S what the golf courses are all about!

    • Todd20036

Newhart had far more class, a better sense of humor, better looks, and was more open minded than Trump could be if he lived to be 500 years old.

    • ChrisInKansas

Good Lord, it’s too early. Somehow I misread that as God should have taken Trump instead of Bob Newhart and I thought, “Oh shit, Bob Newhart died???”

    • Stubenville

I was thinking more Andy Kaufman.

  • Talisman

Still buttering up China to sweeten his bids for golf courses and towers. This “President” is loyal only to his bank account.

      • thatotherjean

If he can’t get them, he’ll make them up. How big was the crowd at his inauguration?

  • Halou

    Gutless, spineless, losing coward.

Trump has already thanked Russia for expelling US diplomatic staff and imposing counter-sanctions, now he is thanking China for their abuse the US financial system and economy. Trump has apologised to the Turks for that time Turkish thugs were indicted in an American court for their violation of American laws, assaulting American citizens, while on American territory.

Trump has praised Duterte’s disregard for the rule of law in the Philippines, and just now praised the Saudi “anti-corruption” purge that only seems to have targeted those who did not feed money into Trump’s own failing businesses. To say nothing of Trump’s complete failure to speak the magical incantation that would fix the hearts and minds of Islamists the world over; “Radical Islamic Terror”.

When is he going to get over the songs and dances that foreign tyrants make in his honour and follow through on his campaign promise to put “America First”?

  • ChrisInKansas

He has no idea what he’s doing.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

Trump is fixated! They look like pussy cats!
Thank gawd they have that barrier to keep his little paws off them!

      • djcoastermark

        Orange puddy tats too.

      • Câl

What he doesn’t realise is that this makeup represents the Monkey King in Chinese opera: wilful, scatter-brained, supremely selfish and overly confident in his own powers but in the end taught to behave by the Buddha and the combined Chinese gods. A message that the Chinese believe that they can pin Trump down under their version of the Iron Mountain? Chinese culture is always full of symbolism; the colours used and even flowers show the hosts’ feelings so this choice of welcome show is subtle but sure.

  • BeaverTales

I actually agree that past presidents have sold out America to enrich “producers” who don’t want to pay a fair wage to working Americans. Trump himself benefited from a robber baron economy that enriched the Chinese, whose main virtue is that they lack America’s pesky labor, financial and environmental laws. Perhaps Trump is finally realizing that he wouldn’t be where he is if he didn’t benefit from unfairness on both sides of the Pacific Rim.

America stopped trying to export democracy after Reagan took office. Reagan and everyone after him only tried to “open up markets” by exploiting the fact that China had a billion people willing to work for less than a dollar an hour. The GOP didn’t care about democracy when they realized the American people would gladly sell their votes to a celebrity who made chimp movies and ignored the deep unfairness in the world’s labor markets that made Walmart the biggestest company on Earth.

    • AmeriCanadian

I know Drumpf wouldn’t “get it” but this is what a landslide actually looks like.

    • Michael White

I agree completely with you about companies not wanting to pay a fair wage. But, in my opinion, we share a blame in this as we want to pay as little as possible for goods and services. We want to pay $1,000 for a sofa that last three years and made in a foreign country, rather than pay $4,000 for a sofa that will last 10 years or more.

People, I sure as fuck don’t, go to wallly’s world and buy a cheap tee shirt that wears out after a couple of washing rather than go to a better store and pay more for a shirt that will lost two or three times. I actually did buy a package of tee shirts from wally and then from Target and washed them together to see the result.

      • William

Once upon a time, Wally World had big signs proclaiming ‘Made in the USA’ on American made goods. Then they realized more money could be made selling Chinese made crap.

      • thatotherjean

It’s not entirely that people want to pay less for shoddy goods. For many people, it’s what they can afford to pay. If you don’t already know it, read up on “Sam Vimes Theory of Economic Injustice.”

        https://wiki.lspace.org/mediawiki/Sam_Vimes_Theory_of_Economic_Injustice

    • The_Wretched

It’s almost like the EC is a really bad ideal. 40% pop vote gets you <3% EC votes.

      • Veylon

On the other hand, you don’t want the country whipsawing when the 2% on the fence get to choose who has the 51 and who the 49. It was ugly enough in Florida in ’00.

I would like to see the presidency shrunk down, though. Trump should be a wake up call that giving too much power to one person is a bad idea.

  • Bluto

Hey dotard, the entire world knows they can easily manipulate you in their favor simply by stroking your ego. Prez Xi is a master of it, you blithering idiot.

There was one trip where the U.S. delegation was not properly met. It was probably on purpose.

When you’re tough on China, China sometimes isn’t very nice to you. When you’re a prick who is easily suaded by “respect”, they lay it on thick.

I do not know if this is related to drumpster or now – but I wouldn’t be surprised – but we learned this week that our mixed recycling will now be going directly into landfill as the Chinese won’t take it any more. And, of course, nobody wants to deal with it here in the US. I’d gladly go back to sorting recycling but for our county to just shrug its shoulders and go “Oh well, bummer.” is pissing me off.

And like I said, I don’t know if this is due to drumpster, but maybe China is doing a tit-for-tat thing or maybe drumpster wanted to put a tariff on it or something, or maybe it was his idea in the first place. Gotta employ more landfill employees, ya know.

    Whatever, it SUCKS.

Though where’d you learn it? They tried to stop taking glass around here and there was actually an outcry that got them to change their minds. (And this being in the South where it seems generally they all think it’s a liberal conspiracy if they don’t pay tons extra on trash pickup to waste everything.) They really make their money off the paper around here, seems to be the thing, …why they seem to think the aluminum at least isn’t worthwhile, who knows.

It’s becoming apparent, that when it’s time to stand behind your words, Trump is not averse to bending over. I can see that when in China, blame past presidencies and when in America blame China AND past presidencies. Dirtbag in Chief.
