VIRGINIA: Trump Has The Sadz, Blames Loser GOP Gubernatorial Candidate For Not Loving Him Enough

The Washington Post reports:

In a tweet after the election, Trump, who is traveling in South Korea, tried to explain away Gillespie’s loss by claiming that it did not reflect poorly on his own political potency.

But it was not clear that a further embrace would have produced any better results. Virginia, which has been trending blue in recent years, was the only Southern state won by Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

She beat Trump by a margin of five points in 2016, compared with a nine-point margin for Democrat Ralph Northam over Gillespie.

Guess who has the sadz:

Right-leaning outlet Breitbart News immediately threw Gillespie under the bus, dubbing him a “Republican swamp thing,” with senior editor Joel B. Pollak saying, “The main reason the GOP cannot unite to fulfill their past promises is because of jittery moderate incumbents in blue states and a few swing districts.”

“Most of the blame sits with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell,” Pollak wrote. “But the buck stops with Trump. It falls to him to find a way to fulfill core legislative priorities on health care, immigration, and taxes without losing too many moderates or alienating his base.”

Right leaning?

My thanks to whomever introduced Copeland’s Simple Gifts on the other thread. It reminded me of when we had a reason to celebrate the presidency.

And despite Trump’s efforts, we will again one day. Starting now.

Thanks! And note: Two of the musicians are immigrants. one is an ex pat, and one was from Chicago. The music’s meaning and the musician’s cultures was a great message– and the very opposite of Trump in every possible way.

    • Moebym of the Returners

What a time to be alive.

      • Oscarlating Wildely

I admit: I wept when I saw it then. Still do.

    • Nychta

Great video. Obama’s inauguration and the following celebrations were wonderful and inspiring.

Those were the days – and given today’s election results I have a little more hope that we’ll wake from the current national nightmare before it’s too late..

  • bkmn

I just hope the GOP realizes you are poison. And reacts appriately.

    • TampaDink

I kind of hope that the GOP doubles down & marinates themselves in all things trump related….including his collusion with Russia. I think that would help us out more next year…and in 2020.

  • Yikes, yet another new thread?! Unpossible!

    • bkmn

      Unbelievable. Indeed

Well, if Joe’s still in the Canary Islands, it’s about 5:40 a.m. there.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I still want the NY AG to go after him, resign or no resign. Resignation isn’t enough punishment for the crap he’s pulled. I’d want to punish him just for SCOTUS and Betsy Devos, never mind the rest.

      • JAKvirginia

But… salient point. He only had influence because POTUS. Once that disappears so will any reason to deal with him. Buh-bye Trump “empire”.

        • TampaDink

Any Republican sans Chris Collins (reddest district in NY R+12) is in deep shit for next year.
When your nominee for governor in 2014 gets voted out of his job in a red/purple district in NY, that spells deep trouble for most Rs.

          • Lizard

I was a trumpet in high school, mellophone my freshman year of college, and trombone the other three.

He was the only one who did it in our section of 40. He played bass trombone and claimed it helped him with the second trigger. It worked for him, though, because he was great. Damn good trombonist (being college idiots, we referred to ourselves as tromboners).

          • Bluto

French horn, trumpet & mellophone here. Of the brass section the trumpeteers were always the horniest, the tromboners were the drunken troublemakers, baritones loved to be naked & the tubas were mischievously sneaky SOBS. The woodwinds never stood a chance. & then there’s the naughty drummers.

          • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Leaving aside the way Breitbart is rewriting history after praising Gillespie right up until he lost and the general insanity of their positions, that statement is contradictory. I wonder if that one was the product of the campaign, or something that went viral.

          • thatotherjean

It originated with Irving Berlin, who wrote “They Like Ike” for a musical, “Call Me Madam,” in 1950. One of the actors sang the campaign version, “I Like Ike,” for an Eisenhower rally in Madison Square Garden, after which it showed up on campaign buttons, posters, TV ads, and pretty much everything connected with the 1952 Republican campaign.

So sayeth Claire Suddath, in Wikipedia

        • Oscarlating Wildely

          “No slogans, please. We’re better.”

And THAT’S what mattered to people in her district. Not that she’s trans. But she ran on this local issue and showed that she’s smart and has a plan and cares about her community. And Ashley Bennett ran for that Freeholder seat in Atlantic City because the guy who had the seat made a Facebook post mocking the Women’s March and insulting women.

      • safari

I am probably cynical since the GOP’s “tax and spend” and “moral election” and “America First” are easy and often repeated nationally.

        • SoCalGal20

The gamechanger this time was that DEMS RAN. In the past there have been so many races where Dems didn’t even field a candidate. Dems field a candidate that actually focuses on issues important to people in their district or state, and wow, they can actually win! Giving people a reason to get out to the polls helps too, and I’m sure part of that was Trump but just having candidates to vote for also helps.

Please believe that I am not limiting his lack of understanding to politics.

    • Oh, Donald is a profoundly, staggeringly, breathtakingly ignorant man, and one of the worst features of his psychosis-level malignant narcissism is he isn’t even aware how damned transparent he is in every action and statement.

Did you get a good nights sleep?

        • Ragnar Lothbrok

Not that you asked – But I did !! Which I am grateful.
Have been having some issues with waking and not getting back to sleep.

          • FAEN

Glad you did pal! You are not alone, I deal with that issue as well and boy is it aggravating.

          • prixator

I had a similar chronic sleep problem. A friend recommended taking a gravol pill before bed and it works! I have been taking one pill every night for years now and I rarely wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep.

I am not recommending you do the same thing; I am just relating what works for me. I know of one person who formed an addiction to gravol, so if you’re prone to addiction, don’t try it.

If you do want to try it, gravol is fairly expensive if you take it daily, so look for the generic version – dimenhydrinate. Here in Toronto, I can buy 100 pills for $6.99 and, at that price, you can only get about 20 or maybe 25 gravols.

I have told every doctor that I have seen that I take this for sleep and not one has had anything to say about it. (The funny thing is that I have taken it daily for around 8 years now and I haven’t vomited in something like 25 years or so; I never had to take it for its primary use.)

          • FAEN

Thank you so much for the info!

          • prixator

If you try it, I hope it works. My best friend also takes it daily.

Before I started taking the pill, I was up so often in the middle of the night that I knew exactly what TV shows were on from about 1 am to 4 am each day of the week.

          • FAEN

Thanks much. I might give it a go if this continues.

[To represent Moore, an elephant *turd* would be FAR more accurate!]

    • Reality.Bites

Based on Trump’s performance, and Sessions back in his first election (he ran unopposed last time), a Republican can be expected to win something like 63% of the vote. That’s the number that’s stuck in my head, anyway. It’s definitely in the 60s.

If Moore wins this in the low 50s or even the high 50s, Republicans are going to have to wonder how many percentage points they can expect to shed in places that aren’t deep red, where they win with 52%, not 60+

Republicans need to learn they aren’t safe from defeat anywhere.

Going to bed, with a smile on my face. I realize the fight gets even more intense tomorrow but for tonight, I’m hopeful, finally, for the first time in a year. Trump and the GOP may not show it publicly but behind the scenes they have to be in full on freak out mode.*

The one big takeaway I see is the freakin diversity of tonight! So many women winning firsts around the country, men and women of color as firsts in cities and states, two trans women, even a Sikh mayor! How awesome is this rejection of the misogyny, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and flat out hatred by the GOP?

    O/T
Humans are vulnerable. We break. We. Get sick. Mental health included… it’s part of the human condition. But to insist gun violence isn’t about guns but instead about mental health, one must ascribe America as one mental case with all the gun violence we allow.

So, just how is Congress keeping Americans safe when they refuse to take action to keep Americans safe from simple gun violence?

We’re already moving on… thoughts and prayers do nothing but make the one praying feel better, like they are doing something. The good guy with a gun scenario only works when the good guy with the gun stops that bad guy from committing murder. In Texas, the good guy scenario did not prevent the 26 deaths. Has forensics been released to the press as to whose bullet killed the shooter? Where was the good guy in Las Vegas? At Pulse? At Columbine? At Sandy Hook… Security guards do not stop it from happening but they are there to react for when it happens, so now we have to accept waiting for that “when” to happen.

Many other countries around the world said it’s foolish to wait for gun violence to happen, instead they decided to act to protect their fellow countrymen from any possibility of it happening. I mean, in Japan do they have to train how to hide in a temple from a lone gunman? In Australia do they have to teach the children how to Duck and Cover in the closets from a lone gunmen?

The one thing Trump said that is honest, is that yes, in America guns are a mental disease. We’re just under four and a half percent of the world’s population but own almost 45% of all personal arms. We worry about preparing for the next gun violence act to occur. I personally calculate what my odds are throughout my day when I cross the street when I’m at work or in my own neighborhood. If that isn’t a form of mental terrorism I don’t know what is! ( looking at you NRA).

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/emaoconnor/notre-dame-reverses-its-decision-to-drop-no-cost-birth?utm_term=.ekJX2XyYv#.qpGYRY7Kg

“The University of Notre Dame has reportedly reversed its decision to drop cost-free contraception coverage through their insurance, announcing the decision in emails to faculty and students Tuesday.

The announcement comes a week after Notre Dame became the first university to publicly take advantage of a new Trump administration rule allowing institutions with “religious” or “moral” opposition to contraception to drop insurance coverage for it.”

    • Homo Erectus

      Thankew jeebus!

  • Well, I’m about to head out. We had the best night in over a year, really.

I know some want to ‘rain on our parade.’ Some want to exhort, ‘Don’t get complacent.’ Mostly in that I see folks who are so wounded they’re afraid to dare to hope things will get better.

Tonight told me things could get better.

Sure, the work ahead is daunting and will be hard. But if we don’t take a few moments to savor and enjoy progress and genuine victories, we risk being worn down and becoming permanently pessimistic.

So enjoy the moment. There will be plenty of work to do tomorrow and in the weeks and months following. But if you can’t just let go and be happy about tonight, for tonight…well, that’s not a good place to be. We need everybody rested, ready, and fired up for what’s to come.

It’ll be hard. We will face setbacks, but righteous resolve can overcome a multitude of challenges.

Thank you again, all of you, for being here for each other and for me. It means everything.

    G’nite.

    • Oh, and to clarify, by “work” I mean things like:
      – Regularly calling and writing your members of Congress
      – Same for your State governors, reps and Senators or whatever’s equivalent
      – Donating, if you can, to worthy Democratic candidates
      – Volunteering to help campaigns and GOTV efforts
      – Participating in protests in your area
      – Making sure YOU are registered to vote and that you vote in EVERY election
      – Talking with those you know and try to persuade (not berate) them into joining the side of good
      – Consider running for office yourself, even if it’s school board or councilperson

Work is not typing words on the Internet…at least not for most of us. 😉
