TRAILER: Steven Spielberg’s The Post

Mashable reports:

Well, this all feels chillingly familiar. Steven Spielberg’s The Post centers on a team of journalists working to expose the U.S. government for lying to the American people. But it’s not a story about our current situation – it’s about The Washington Post publishing the Pentagon Papers in the 1970s. Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks star as publisher Katharine Graham and editor Ben Bradlee, respectively, who put their careers and their freedom on the line in pursuit of the truth.

  • Boreal

If only we had some journalists like this today. There are very few: Rachel Maddow, Matt Taibbi…………………….

    • Cuberly Deux

Actually the WaPo has expanded their investigative depts and it shows in the daily news dumps they’ve been able to release.

But yeah, it is swimming upstream in a strong corporate media environment.

    • AJD

There are plenty, but their work is often under-appreciated, and investigative teams are often the first thing to go when newspapers downsize. The people you’re referring to are more into giving opinions, though.

  • Cuberly Deux

I gotta say, the appearance of journalism movies is a welcome development. Maybe it’ll remind a populace of what journalists actually do.

    • whollyfool

I hope it reminds some journalists of what journalists do.

      • Cuberly Deux

I have sort of a fly on the wall degree of experience when it comes to news reporting. While I worked IT at an alternative media company I observed, what I was told, was rather indicative to daily/weekly publications. Primarily a never ending tussle between the Editorial dept and the Corp Publishing Executives.

        Both rather passionate entities.

        • whollyfool

I meant Fox. But apparently even there the reporters are getting tired of how bad things are. There were some angry journalists over the non coverage of the indictments.

I appreciate you sharing your fly on the wall view. Those are usually the most interesting.

          • Cuberly Deux

            Thanks.

Even Shep Smith has his moments. But that’s cuz of the division he works for. He’s not on the talking head side of things.

          • Cuberly Deux

If you’re interested, there’s a lot of behind the curtain stories out there. This one is rather indicative of what I observed.

            https://48hills.org/2015/03/27/is-the-sf-weekly-dying/

Another instance is where the entire Editorial staff threatened a walk-out after the Publisher started pressuring Editors to write advertorial content for clients. If case you don’t know what advertorial content is, it’s a story pretending to be an actual editorial when all it is is a disguised ad for a particular company or product. This is a BIG journalism no no.

          • whollyfool

Wow, that was a jaw dropping article.

I wish there was a similar reporting site for Detroit.

          • Cuberly Deux

Most likely there is, just a matter of searching for them. There’s a lot of great progressive and serious writing going on.

Massive and relentless protests in the streets of all major cities, especially in Washington, could FORCE their hand.

Americans should be demanding that criminal’s tax returns and other financial records, secure elections, and moderates ONLY appointed to the courts. THAT is the bare MINIMUM they should be demanding.

They should also insist the ACA be left in peace, that laws and regulations that protect the natural environment be respected, and that stricter gun-control laws be enacted.

Trump’s proven and relentless pathological LYING; his repeated obstruction of justice; his attempts to bend the DoJ to HIS will, to use them and law-enforcement as HIS personal Gestapo; his refusal to divest from his businesses, his violations of the Emoluments Clause–these outrages are sufficient for the PEOPLE to demand–right NOW–that Congress hold him accountable and remove him from office!

Call me by the wrong name: how studios are still trying to straight-wash gay films
    – Sony’s disastrous attempt to push Oscar-buzzed Call Me by Your Name as a straight love story on Twitter belies an industry awkwardly denying queerness

Since its debut in Sundance earlier this year, it’s enjoyed a steady stream of buzz, impressing critics and audiences at festivals and finally upon release last month in the UK (it hits the US later this month). The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw awarded it five stars, calling it “ravishingly beautiful”, it boasts a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is being touted as a major contender at next year’s Oscars. One would assume that for a studio such as Sony, almost universal acclaim would be enough to propel a sturdy, problem-free campaign.

Just over a week on from its release, Sony Pictures UK decided to shift the campaign with its staggeringly ill-advised heterosexualising tweet, since deleted.

Well, their messaging is uniform, like it always is for these things, scream the words “working families” “middle class” “job creating”….etc…and their mission is to look like they’re marching in lock-step. Each GOPer reading from the prepared script.

From what I’m seeing it’s not working. Their coalition messaging is frazzled and the details of the bill, that we have, are bad, big big bad. When confronted about the details the GOPers just balk and hem and haw.

I bet the number of GOPers not running for re-election increases, a lot.

      • Gretchen

Using the buzz words only works if voters are reasonably satisfied that the world will still be spinning on its axis in the morning to an extent that they are uninterested in what’s happening in Washington. As long as nothing too exciting is happening, the Republicans can slip almost anything past their constituents without much kerfluffle. Unfortunately for them, Trump is anything but inconspicuous. His ranting and raving draws too much notice not to mention the scandals. People with zero interest in politics are poking their noses into the news again, and Republicans can’t quite sell them chalk and call it cheese right now.

I don’t think they care. They know they’ll lose their billionaire backers if they don’t repeal the estate tax. After that they can rely on Fox News, gerrymandering, and voter blocking to shut out the Democrats – cuz their voters don’t show up anyhow. Everyone knows that.

  • Lars Littlefield

Rep. Mark Walker of South Carolina sure danced fast around questions just pressed to him of MSNBC. He insists there is no problem if taxes cut for the middle class creep back up in ten years as long as the rich get a permanent boost in keeping their monies. Boy, howdy. Good thing he does’t live in my district. Even the local mormon brotherhood wouldn’t put up with that bullshit.

OT: Anyone catch ABC News this evening? Kevin Spacey isn’t doing us any favors by suddenly admitting himself to be gay. The man has a serious chicken queen complex, preying on young boy, after young boy, after young boy. He appears to be a classic case of stunted emotional growth, having never been able to have a successful relationship with another adult man. Major textbook pedophile. What a sick puppy.

    • Jonathan Smith
    • Lazycrockett

I’ve seen what the woman describe happening to her son in every gay bar I’ve worked in. Sad to say.

            I WAS looking for it.

wow, there is no WAY to phrase that correctly………

          • Silver Badger

How many young men are “accidentally” in a gay bar? I would say the vast majority are right where they want to be and find what they were looking for.

          • Jonathan Smith

gent’s. let’s drop this, shall we?
there is NO WAY this conversation works…….

      • Silver Badger

Look at the other side, how many foolish older men are used, abused and cast aside by young predators? I’ve always preferred men my own age or older, but I’ve seen a good number of old fools get their hearts broke.

        • Lazycrockett

          Very rarely.

          • Silver Badger

I always thought they only had themselves to blame. But I will admit my bar experience is somewhat limited. I have had an awful lot of drunk old men cry on my shoulder. Usually when I enter a bar, straight or gay, the drunkest person there walks up to me, tells me that “you’re OK” and proceeds to tell me many things I do not want to know. Main reason I quit going to bars.

      • Sam_Handwich

i can’t say i know much about the details. so we turn now to our Wikipedia correspondent, Trisha Takanawa:

The word gerrymander (originally written Gerry-mander) was used for the first time in the Boston Gazette on 26 March 1812. The word was created in reaction to a redrawing of Massachusetts state senate election districts under Governor Elbridge Gerry (pronounced /ˈɡɛri/; 1744–1814). In 1812, Governor Gerry signed a bill that redistricted Massachusetts to benefit his Democratic-Republican Party.

Bit o’ trivia: The late congressman Gerry Studds (D-MA, served from 73 to 97) was a descendant and namesake of Elbridge Gerry. Studds had a lil’ scandal in the early 80s of noodling with a House page which forced him out of the closet (then still a big pearl-clutching deal). (Kid was 17 and by everyone’s account r’ship non-coercive – I don’t love it, but he was no Spacey.) Anyway I was pretty impressed that Studds suffered a House censure and continued to serve and be re-elected multiple times. It felt like one of those early watershed events for gay visibility in the congress, and not knuckling under to the scolds. He was always a very solid Dem too, of the old school. A pal of mine worked on his staff for a while.

(Only thing I never got – he pronounced his name with a hard G, like Gary. I guess the soft G got lost over the generations, as so many things do)

He left, came back when it suited him, fucked things up, and then went back to what he was before. He was never in it for the betterment of the Democratic Party he was in it for himself. If he TRULY wanted to change things? He would have stayed a Dem and worked to change from within.

    • billbear1961

      WHAT?!

      =:O

      • safari

They are not living. They cannot replicate themselves. Those legs bond with the proteins on the surface of a cell. Their genetic payload is then injected into the cell. The payload contains new ] instructions to make more of themselves and hijacks the biochemical machines that keep us living. They are overrun: reprogrammed to create more of what you see. Eventually the cell explodes after being filled with copies. Pathological only begins my thoughts.

There are safeguards in place at the cellular level, but rawly speaking, you catch a cold, something like this has countless copies looking for places to inject into your own cells.

        • safari

A good immune system can catch them earlier.

        • billbear1961

It looks like something from the Andromeda Strain!

          • safari

This is a phage-type viruses. There are others with different shapes, but the idea is the same: identify docking sites on the cell, pierce into the cell, send new instructions to override its basic function for the sole purpose of making more.

          • -M-

Do you know which phage it is?

          • safari

            I mean, I could ask.

          • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

            Could be a T4.

          • -M-

I think it’s a nanoscale model of one. Which is neat.

The main reason I was reluctant to guess T4 was the lack the second set of ‘legs’ those can have just below the head. I think I decided from looking at pictures that lambda’s tail tends to bend.

        • BobSF_94117

          “They cannot replicate themselves.”

          That’s what they always say…

        • Cute. So, an as yet unprogrammed and therefore unnamed Borg infiltration virus?

          • safari

Perhaps. I don’t know what crispr and its related tech is up to. Aside from rewriting our genomes and gametes. Little things.

    • -M-

Actually reverse image search suggests it may be an artificial nanoscale (but still ten times life size!) model of a T4, though many other tailed bacteriophage look much the same. Made of diamond-like carbon. This would explain the layered look.

      • -M-

        Still very cool. 👍

That is actually a virus designed to infect bacteria, or bacteriophage. Human viruses tend to be more spheric.

There should be a choice to copy link. Just do that then past the link in your comment and Disqus should do the rest.

        • It’s of the pattern: He wants to please whomever he’s with and will give away everything (which isn’t actually his to begin with) in the pursuit of praise and acceptance. Because his need for outside affirmation is insatiable.

I don’t think we’ve ever had a more treasonous and disloyal leader. He’d probably give Alaska to Putin if given the chance.

This is great. Lin-Manuel Miranda is bringing “Hamilton” to Puerto Rico in January 2019 and will be reprising his role as Alexander Hamilton. They’re going to be selling a bunch of seats to each show for $10 so people will be able to see it.

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/mbvd/in-unprecedented-move-sony-pictures-will-reshoot-kevin?utm_term=.dpyYqYEK4#.ew6xLxnZr

“A film starring Kevin Spacey about American industrialist J. Paul Getty that had already been filmed will be reshot to replace the lead actor following allegations of sexual assault against him.

Spacey will be replaced by Christopher Plummer, whose representative confirmed to BuzzFeed News that he will reshoot the scenes in All The Money In The World that Spacey appeared in.”

    • The one thing that’ll kill a career even faster than having been a sexual predator for decades?

If it’s discovered the perpetrator was gay.

Spacey, Hastert, Craig, Haggard, Foley, Sandusky—all ruined almost immediately once the news really hit. Some in prison, others simply gone from public view.

If it’s a straight dude, there’s a better than even chance he may experience a setback, but will come back. Assuming anything even happens. O’Reilly’s already in talks for a new contract, for example. And of course there’s the Cheeto Hitler.

We’ve come pretty far…but there’s still a double-standard and it ain’t good for LGBT folks.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

That reminds me that Danny Masterson (I’d never heard of him before) has been accused of multiple counts of rape but Netflix still has his show on. And ughhh, there’s a twist that Scientology was involved in the coverup.

        https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/danny-masterson-netflix-rape-accusations_us_59fd03c5e4b0c9652fff718a

“One of Masterson’s accusers initially filed an LAPD report in 2004 saying that she was raped in 2003 while she was “passed out” and that, when she awoke and realized Masterson was raping her, she struggled with him until he choked her and she passed out again. The case was not referred to the district attorney at the time after more than 50 members of the Church of Scientology, which both Masterson and his accuser belonged to, submitted affidavits to the LAPD denying the woman’s account. The tactic is a common one for the organization, which is known for using fear and intimidation in order to silence anyone perceived as attacking Scientology.

Two of Masterson’s accusers initially reported being raped directly to the Church of Scientology. Scientology rules say that members of the church must never report a Scientologist to law enforcement. The punishment would be immediate expulsion from the church, which would include family and friends being ordered not to associate with or speak to the banished member.”

        • Tulle Christensen

          Sounds like gang rules

      • Reality.Bites

The other ones you mention, however, were mostly/all working in deeply homophobic environments. Many of whom did not identify as gay at all. Republican politicians whose careers are destroyed after a gay sex scandal would have their careers destroyed if the sex scandal was they’ve been in a monogamous relationship.

There hasn’t been a straight actor of Spacey’s stature who was in a similar situation in recent times. Bill Cosby is closest, but he was clearly in the twilight of his career. Nevertheless, everything he was involved in was cancelled. His career is as dead as Spacey’s and will not be resurrected.

O’Reilly may be in talks, but there’s also a huge difference in audience. O’Reilly appeals to the scum of the earth, absolutely none of whom were offended by anything he did. Spacey and Cosby had mainstream appeal. Their fanbase is appalled.

OT: The Ozone Hole is actually healing but . . .

“While the famous Antarctic “ozone hole” is finally beginning to heal, 30 years after it was first discovered, scientists have just identified a new threat to its recovery. A study, just out Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications, suggests that a
common industrial chemical called dichloromethane — which has the power to destroy ozone — has doubled in the atmosphere over the past 10 years. And if its concentrations keep growing, scientists say, it could delay the Antarctic ozone layer’s return to normal by up to 30 years.”

This didn’t happen by accident; even during the height of the Cold War, countries could reach an agreement to make the entire planet safer for humans. Trump’s irresponsible actions will make parts of the planet inhabitable by the end of this century. From the linked WaPo article:

… the [ozone] hole’s recovery is almost entirely attributable to a landmark 1987 international agreement known as the Montreal Protocol, which spurred major global efforts to cut down on the emission of ozone-depleting chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs.

  • Max_1

Speaking of famous actors in the news…

I suppose we all know Spacey is being recast in a movie and there’s a petition to recast him on HOC… And then there’s this:

    https://twitter.com/yashar/status/928441616519565312

IMO: Spacey’s carrier isn’t circling the drain… It’s stuck in the goose neck.

    • Lazycrockett

The mother openly admits that her son told Spacey he was 21 before the drinks started flowing. This scenario is just chicken hawk creeping on a twink.

      • JCF

Yeah, w/ the “my son is straight”, I kinda tuned out of this one. But it doesn’t discount every other horror story re KS.

“But when someone posts a nude photo of a young man who may very well be 18, but looks 14, I just go numb. Would we put up with heterosexual men posting photos of underage looking Lolitas at JMG? But underage Lolitos are OK? Sorry, but that’s fucked up.”

ITA. If you have to put a disclaimer “legal” in front of a pic, you’re still being gross.

      • Reality.Bites

Putting your hands inside someone’s pants without consent isn’t an age thing. Sex between them would have been completely legal if it had been consensual.

    • Lars Littlefield

I’ve had a problem accepting the behavior of chicken queens ever since I, myself, was considered chicken. It was obvious to me at an early age chicken queens are seriously mentally ill. They are attracted to underage kids because they are not emotionally developed to socialize with men their own age. I’ve always preferred men my own age or a few years older. Sure, I like most had the misfortune of being exploited when I was under 18 to engage in sexual and emotional relationships with a couple of men much older than me. But I’ve always liked men my own age. When I was twenty-one I wasn’t hung up on fucking 18 year-olds. And by the time I was 30 I had nothing but pity and disgust for men my age who were still chasing after 18-year-old boys.

I enjoy looking at photos of handsome men like most people. But when someone posts a nude photo of a young man who may very well be 18, but looks 14, I just go numb. Would we put up with heterosexual men posting photos of underage looking Lolitas at JMG? But underage Lolitos are OK? Sorry, but that’s fucked up.

And with Kevin Spacey, although he’s yet to be convicted in a court of law and proven to have molested under age boys, it’s obvious he has a serious problem. The guy is a pedophile. He may not be hitting on 10 year-old kids (that we know of) but he certainly has a fixation for 14 years and on up. It will be interesting if anyone in their 30s or 40s comes forward to complain he hit on them and grabbed their junk when they were 30 or 40 years-old.

The most annoying thing about the Kevin Spacey problem is that, by him suddenly claiming to be gay, his particular illness now colors the lives of all of us in the LGBT community. After so many years of hard work we are back to looking like we’re all pedophiles who can’t keep our hands off teenagers.

The Spacey thing needs serious help.

      • Reality.Bites

People who take great pride in not being attracted to younger people generally develop ludicrous ideas of what “looking almost underage” is.

I’ve never seen a photo posted on JMG of anyone who looks anywhere close to being under 18. No – adulthood does NOT start at 35.

There is no need for this One Million Momesque hyperbole here. If photos of clearly adult men offend you, kindly fuck off. No one needs to post disclaimers when posting non-nude photos of adult men.

You are so SERIOUSLY fucked up. No one is posting anything close to what your mind is seeing.

I was (in posting these previously JMG-posted pics) responding to this: “I’ve never seen a photo posted on JMG of anyone who looks anywhere close to being under 18.” Do you agree w/ this claim?

          • BobSF_94117

The photos look like guys who are 18. Maybe one of them looks a tad younger. Is that “close to being under 18”? I suppose, but I wouldn’t phrase it that way.

Apologies that I conflated your statements with those about boys who look 14.

        • Lars Littlefield

Oh, please. You know damn well at least on person who comments here regularly posts photos of young men who look like adolescents under 18 despite insisting the are older. Not all of his photos are of underage boys, but he has posted them. If you insist you haven’t seen any of his little dream boat fixations you are lying to yourself.

      • BobSF_94117

The guy is a pedophile. He may not be hitting on 10 year-old kids (that we know of) but he certainly has a fixation for 14 years and on up.

You call him a pedophile and then proceed to describe NOT a pedophile. And you throw in the insinuation that he might like 10 yos. You’re doing Tony Perkins’ work for him.

        • Lars Littlefield

Not really. Let’s just consolidate all the labels and agree that Spacey is seriously dysfunctional. It’s Spacey who is doing all of the work for Tony Perkins. I’m sorry you don’t see that.

  • OT- Regarding last nights results. Larry Sabato is very impressed with the Democrats victories last nights but has two caveats-
    1. The Republicans actually increased their share of the vote in the part of Virginia that resembles Appalachia. This could prove problematic for red state Democratic Senatorial candidates like Manchin in West Virginia seeking reelection in 2018. Trump remains strong with blue collar, lower income white voters. There is no dent in their support.
    2. The Democrats cannot win the House just by knocking off incumbent Republicans in Clinton-won districts in 2018. They need more than that.
His bottom line is that 2018 is not going to be a cakewalk for the Democrats. Control of congress is not guaranteed. But Republicans need to be very worried.
Read more of his analysis here — http://www.centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/

I think there are 23 Clinton-won Rethugs in the House…Dems need just 24 seats to flip! With enough turn-out, it’s not difficult to imagine some *barely-won* Drumpf districts could also be in play.

Seriously, the Dems should consider writing off the Appalachians and Ozark Plateau. These areas were MORE likely to vote for McCain than for Bush 43; they are white racists who are choosing to stay isolated in their cultural enclaves. If Trump/Ryan-Care can’t scare them out, I doubt any failure of coal job growth (which will be in Wyoming and the West, anyway), I doubt anything will.

    • Reality.Bites

2018 elections are nearly a year away. One thing we can be sure of is that the Trump factor will be dramatically different by then. In what way? We have no idea. Not only can’t we just assume he’ll be in power, we can’t be clear on how he’ll be leaving if he does, and where that will leave the Republicans.

No one actually knows what Venit actually wanted, except many people at the event saw Venit’s hands openly reaching for Crews’ cock on multiple occasions while Crews tried to get away..Crews is straight and didn’t appreciate a strange man grabbing his dick in public..

Terry Crews seems like a stand-up guy, and truly the last person you’d expect to have been groped. This is clearly an epidemic that spans all ages, classes, races, sexes.

Crews deserves a lot of credit for offering his story during #metoo, showing sexual harassment can happen to anyone. I think it was a little later that the perpetrator was identified and fired.

Maybe there are still some LIONS to defend democracy in THIS Republic, after all (although I suspect the female likely outnumber the male).

How could the University of Florida nazi this coming?

Can they pursue criminal charges that will keep him out of Florida?

      • Tulle Christensen

In Florida if you do not have a history of bad checks you are given a chance to make good on the check, if you do not you can be charged with a crime

I think if it is for over 2500 dollars it is a felony, not 100% sure on that

Yes, Fla has some pretty tight laws on check bouncers.
