MONTANA: Former Liberian Refugee Elected Mayor Of State Capital, First Black Mayor In State History

The Helena Independent Record reports:

Wilmot Collins will be Helena’s new mayor, unseating incumbent Jim Smith in a close race Tuesday. Collins, 54, will be the city’s first new mayor in 16 years after running a long campaign based in progressive principles.

“The people of Helena have spoken, and I am honored to be able to serve them,” Collins said as the night drew to a close. “I intend to work with commissioners, work for the people of Helena and find what is best for this city.”

Our Nation will be so much better off when those that lead more closely resemble those that live in it.

  • Boreal

    Holy shit.

    • Bluto

That’s what the baggers are saying too, only for the exact opposite reason as you & I.

  • Ross

One year ago, 63 million voters thought it was a good idea to put this into the White House.

    • skyweaver

And this for me personally is why yesterday’s repudiation was so meaningful. I will never forget that this happened, that this man was allowed to be voted in

    • JCF

Ahem, Ross, wouldn’t you say “63 million voters allegedly“?

      • Ross

        Ahem, indeed. Thanks!

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Having stayed in Helena many times for a prior job, I am like really shocked.
Let this be the sign of things to come, everywhere.

    OT: More GOPers quit.

    http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/jersey-gop-congressman-lobiondo-retire-12-terms-50995314

“Twelve-term Rep. Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey declared in a statement that “our nation is now consumed by increasing political polarization” and “there is no longer middle ground.” The 71-year-old became the latest moderate Republican to leave Congress and open up a seat that will be ripe for Democrats to pick up as they fight to retake control of the House next year.

Then, several hours later, seven-term Rep. Ted Poe of Texas, a conservative, announced that he too plans to retire rather than seek re-election to another term next year. Poe, 69, whose district covers parts of Houston and northern suburbs, said in a statement that “Thanks to the lord, I’m in good health, but it’s time for the next step.” He added that he was looking forward to spending more time with his grandkids.

    • Karl Dubhe

I’m sure the grandkids will love that.

Well, actually, I shouldn’t be snarky. He might be a decent gramp, in order to make up for everything else.

I’ve heard of drinking out of slippers, but couldn’t someone have cleaned that before using it?

  • Lars Littlefield

Good news. I have somewhat of a vested interest in Montana. Knowing what I know about Big Sky Country, this win will piss a lot of people off. Excellent news, indeed!

Why are there confederate statues in Montana?

    • Tulle Christensen

      cause black people

      • JCF

Cause black people in 1916 (ergo, as usual, this wasn’t really about “Confederate veterans”)

    • glass

      Red states love hateful iconography.

  • ColdCountry

    Go Montana!!

  • KnownDonorDad

It would be a true public service if someone could comb alt-right web sites today and share some choice reactions to all of these elections.

    • Edmund Allin

Well, in the case of Breitbart, other than the stuff already reported here, Londonistan is apparently in the grip of a crime wave that includes a teenager being disembowelled by two thugs. (Breitbart is right; the Maybot has so reduced police funding that we are seeing a very sharp increase in crime. For example, we’re now at a national average of 13 murders per million population, terrorist attacks included.)

Trump also did not bow to the Japanese Emperor, Melania rocks her clothes, China is the devil, what a great time we had this time in 2016, etc. And a lot of questionable grammar and bad spelling.

      • KnownDonorDad

Thank you, and sorry to hear about the crime.

        • Edmund Allin

We’ll survive . I also made the mistake of commenting on Breitbart on this subject. Bigger sigh.

  • KnownDonorDad

Meanwhile, in Cambridge, MA, one of the two city councillors (out of nine) elected on the first round is a Muslim woman, Sumbul Siddiqui.

    • Edmund Allin

The end is nigh. She may appear to be a lawyer (who doesn’t wear a veil), but you know she’s just itching take away everyone’s guns in preparation for the imposition of Sharia law and the disembowelment of all God-fearin’ Christians. :p

      • KnownDonorDad

Ha ha! 😀 Oh wait…what’s that knock at the door…OMG NO IT’S THE NEW MUJAHIDEEN COME TO TAKE ME AWAY!*!DK*)@))@

  • Gene Perry

Yo, Trump … what’ja say now about extreme vetting of refugees?

  • Jefe5084
  • narutomania

    Wow. Just … wow.

    CONGRATULATIONS!!! What a tremendous win!!

  • Lakeview Bob

Hoboken, New Jersey, elected Ravinder Bhalla as its mayor Tuesday night. He is the man that was targeted by racist fliers calling him a terrorist. He is Hindu.

    • CJAS

Also in NJ, (D) Vin Gopal unseated two-term (R) Sen. Jennifer Beck in the 11th senatorial district where Indians are 1% of the population. (Bhalla is Sikh.)

  • The_Wretched

Progressives can and do win elections. They should get the same support from the Dem party as the ‘moderate’ dems.

  • BobSF_94117

Can one be a “former refugee”? If he returned to Liberia, he’d be one. Otherwise… I’m not convinced.

    • ChrisMorley

When you later become a US citizen, that becomes your immigration and nationality status, replacing your initial refugee status.

  • DoctorDJ

“Beating an incumbent who was slow to remove a confederate statue.”

Oh, yes, that proud heritage of Montana in the Confederacy!

    What in the actual fuque… ? http://sonsofconfederateveterans.blogspot.com/2012/08/confederates-remembered-in-montana.html

    • Paul Ohbehr L

History is complicated. Here you can read about Confederate Gulch where gold was mined near Helena. I always thought that Helena was founded by some southerners who also found gold on Last Chance Gulch. Yet now I’m not finding the story and I’m tired of looking for it. Here’s the story about Confederate Gulch and pardoned Confederate soldiers (pardoned before the war was over): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederate_Gulch_and_Diamond_City

    • Paul Ohbehr L

Oh, that statue was taken down (and on my birthday earlier this year):

The Confederate Memorial Fountain was a historic fountain in honor of veterans of the Confederate States Army in Helena, Montana’s Hill Park, in the United States. It was installed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1916, and removed on August 18, 2017.
