Jerry Falwell Jr. Has The Virginia Sadz

The Hill reports:

Jerry Falwell Jr., the president of Liberty University and an ally of President Trump, said on Tuesday that the District of Columbia should “annex” Northern Virginia and return governance of the state “to Virginians.

His argument appeared to hinge on federal employees who work in Washington while living in Virginia. Parts of Northern Virginia, including Fairfax County and Alexandria County, were won by Northam in Tuesday’s election.

  • this is the literal definition of gerrymandering. you would think the president of a university would know that.

    • basementmatt

He does, and it’s probably what he wants.

    • Phil

In his defense, it’s not a very good university…..

      • Gene Perry

        & not a very good president …

      • Gerry Fisher

I saw what you did there. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Oh, Parker

I saw a bumper sticker for Liberty University on one of those giant GM dinosaur SUVs the other day. It also had sports team stickers for a high school that’s in a “white flight” and heavy Trump supporting area south of Indianapolis. I just sat there and went…yup.

      • Robincho

        Libety Univesity…

        • grindstone

          Subtle. and very funny.

    • worstcultever

I wonder how many resumes with “Liberty University” on them go instantly to the reject pile in the actual world of businesses and entities who wish to hire smart people.

      • Tawreos

If it were up to me, it would be all of them.

      • Oh, Parker

You’d be surprised at how many deplorables in Indy get into jobs they aren’t prepared or skilled for due to saying just the right amount of Jesusy stuff and knowing the right people. They don’t usually advance much or distinguish themselves, but it’s enough for them to make the payment on their Yukon while everyone else carries their weight. I mean, it’s fucking epidemic.

      • Librarykid

During the reign of the shrub, there was a woman at the DOJ picking Liberty graduates to pack the justice system with right wing robots.

Liberty University makes me thing of what we learned in social studies in the 60s: countries with words like “free” or “peoples'” “democratic” “republic” etc. were none of those and were generally repressive, authoritarian communist, etc.

There’s not enough coffee or fuck yous for this yet, I’m going back for a little more sleep….

  • skyweaver

I live and work in Northern Virginia. The federal government isn’t the big scary entity that Republicans have made it out to be – it’s a big place with lots of buildings that my neighbors go to and work in every day. Even if you take away the hatred that Trump spews, at the end of the day they know a really really bad department manager when they see one

    • Nowhereman

Whenever I hear people say that we need a businessman to run the country, I cringe.

      • skyweaver

I agree. Return the day to day running of the country to the nerdy, brilliant and socially awkward wonks. There are many of them where I live. I vote a Return of the Nerds approach!

About what? Burning crosses? Kicking out the fucking Nazis?

    Oh! You mean their sexuality!!

  • TimCA

Disenfranchisement of ever more US citizens always seems to be foremost in GOP thinking.

    • DaddyRay

They don’t know any other way to win because it couldn’t possibly be their failed policies or hate based positions that are to blame

      • Ron Robertson

And if they can’t disenfranchise them, they lie their way into office, and if that’s not working, they gerrymander their way in. It’s their trifecta of power grabs. Since they rely exclusively on that, and not their political positions, it tells you what they think of their own platform.

        • Nowhereman

We have GOT to get our hands on more state legislatures in 2018. That is imperative. And I hope that the democrats are serious about having a 50 state agenda. They’ve ignored my state (Alaska) forever.

      • Rambie

Their protectionism, sexism, divisiveness, and outright cognitive dissonance won’t allow them too.

        • RoFaWh

          You forgot sheer stupidity.

    • JoyZeeBoy

Yeah, gotta get that “base” down to a nice, manageable, Republican, white, racist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic group of true ‘Muricans. Or some shit.

      • Nowhereman

And my question would be “And THEN what?” That is what we are seeing now. I really have no idea what the hell they want, and the economy always works better under democrats.

    • Nowhereman

It’s all they have. They can’t win on their ideas and accomplishments so they have to lie cheat and steal.

  • Lars Littlefield

What we really need is to elect a Congress and a President who will amend the Constitution to require all religious organizations to pay an equitable share of federal and state income and property taxes. Amirite?

    • Kruhn

Actually, a simpler solution would be for churches to lose their nonprofit status and go through the same process others go to get their 501 (c)(3). I think that’s an IRS rule

  • Mark Nรฉe Fuzz

Better idea- DC should start collecting taxes from your bullshit church.

  • Mike Rasor

So Falwell wants to gerrymander state lines.

  • ccc

Where the hell is the so-called “conflict” in NoVa?

    • boatboy_srq

      Two parts.

      1) Rural VA is getting trigggered about encroaching exurbs (this despite getting rich selling their farmland for tony subdivisions), and they hate paying taxes and getting the services those taxes provide. Google “Don’t Metro Loudoun” for an example.

      2) Much of the new NoVA community is Blah/Brown, and lily-white Vuhjinnya don’t hold with that.

  • marshlc

This is a line of thought that particularly irks me – “if you think and live differently than I do, you’re not really a Virginian”.

Sometimes it’s used pretty lightly, but most of the time it’s an attack, even when wrapped in the sheep’s clothing of a light banter.

After our last provincial election here in Alberta, there was a thing about the new premier not knowing how to wear a cowboy hat, with pictures of her at the Calgary Stampede with her hat on backwards. “Ha ha, she’s not really an Albertan” with a strong undercurrent of “She’s not the legitimate premier”. To which my reply was “I’m sixty fucking years old and have lived and worked and paid taxes in this province for all but about five of those years. I’ve never worn a goddam cowboy hat and wouldn’t if you paid me to but if you want to say I’m not “really” an Albertan because of that well just step a little closer when you say it”.

In the same way, the right in most countries have stolen the word “patriot” to only mean their brand of stupid nationalism. I just can’t stand this and call it out whenever I see it.

    • boatboy_srq

Falwell’s response is a glimpse into the dark soul of GOTea “federalism.” They really do want 50 separate countries cooperating under an umbrella treaty org rather than a union, and it shows in moments like these.

      • RoFaWh

The US once had that. It was called the Articles of Confederation and it didn’t work worth a damn.

        • boatboy_srq

Most of the Civil War scholarship I have seen hints rather broadly that had the South won the Confederacy would have dissolved completely by 1900 for just the same reasons, leaving the Union with a dozen warring states on its southern border.

    • Karl Dubhe

Steven, our old PM, also wore his hat backwards in a Stampede event. IIRC.

Most of my farming relatives in Alberta wear baseball hats, not cowboy hats. Maybe the guys who talk about who the real Albertans are, are actually from somewhere else. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • RoFaWh

Texans have a phrase for it: “All hat and no cattle.”

Oh!!! The wailing, moaning and gnashing of teeth is of biblical proportion this morning and really something to enjoy. Don’t you read your own bible, Jerry? Don’t you know from your KJ that you can’t hold people down and expect that they will not, in the end, rise up against you and be triumphant? This is just the beginning!

Dare we hope for indictments today?????

      • GayOldLady

I’m thinking Mueller’s going to give us a couple of days to enjoy our victory before he turns the political world upside down with indictments. MF, Jr thinks he’s going to stay out of prison, is he in for a surprise. The arrogance of the people around Trump is astounding. I’m betting it will happen sometime between Thursday and early next week.
I’m getting my stash of popcorn ready. We thought the indictment of Manafort was good, this is going to be even better.

        • William

Flynn Jr. should hurry and get his ears pinned back before he goes to prison.

He needs to get a 25 year sentence working at Comet Pizza.

        • RoFaWh

Always keep in mind that for all their loathsome politics and for all the efforts Russia has made to help them, the people around Trump are, like their leader, incredibly stupid.

I’m faintly surprised they even know to get out of bed in the morning.

    • Librarykid

This is the trouble with Islam. It means “submission” and that is not human nature or even most living things’ nature. Most living things seek to make things more comfortable for themselves by striving to make their situation better. Plants grow toward light and extend roots into soil. Animals hunt for food, lodging and sexual partners. Nothing alive sits submissive.

      • GayOldLady

Every religion requires submission to something. Usually what they consider the “will of god”.

        • RoFaWh

Give me a religion where it suffices to just pop into the temple once a year (or even just once a decade) and say “hi” to the resident idol.

Can someone explain to me why DC doesn’t have elections and voters’ rights like the states?

    • Tulle Christensen

They have elections (Mayor, City Console, Dog Catcher, etc), they do not have any Reps or Senators because only states get those.

At least now they get to vote for President

      • Baltimatt

DC has a non-voting representative in the House.

      • zhera

I guess I should have worded my question differently. Why is DC a district separate from a state?

        • swimboy

The district was set up so that no single state would have more influence over the federal government than any other. It was felt at the time that if federal employees (and federal property) were under the jurisdiction of a state’s government, it would provide unfair influence.

          • zhera

        • Baltimatt

The US Constitution specifies that a federal district up to 10 miles square be ceded by a state or state and under the authority of the Congress, Article 1, Section 8.

Federal districts aren’t uncommon around the world but I don’t know why it works elsewhere….where people actually got along unlike the colonies. We had 8 “capitals” before DC and the Residence Act 1790. The government moved there in 1800 with all 131 federal employees.

    • Hank

DC, as a non-state, has a non-voting member of the House of Representatives, however the DC Government can still be overruled by the House (Rethuglicans) if the House does not like what the District Government approves, i.e. Legalizing anything. We can vote for a Mayor and City Council to run the District of Columbia. We can vote in national elections for 3 electoral votes for President. It was set up as a region for the Federal Government, which OWNS large areas, and all the buildings, white House, Museums, and other Government owned buildings do NOT pay real estate taxes to the District, either. Part of the income, that the Federal Govt. gives to DC can be withheld.
It was never supposed to be an area, that people actually lived, but where the Federal Government resides. People were supposed to reside in the states, that they come from. It changed early on to a place of residence for people and never had a vote. As of now, the population of DC is greater, than @ the 10 smaller states in population. Yet still now no vote in the House and certainly no Senator.

  • Tulle Christensen

A long time ago Congress gave the DC area south of the Potomac back to Virginia because the state wanted it back.

    • stuckinthewoods

Back then it seemed impossible to believe that the federal government could use even a fraction of the 100 sq miles. All federal buildings were by law to be built on the MD side, the government had control of the total but was letting a major port, Alexandria, become neglected. Then, as now, there were political rivalries in Virginia, some Virginians weren’t sure they wanted it back, but it was returned in 1846. Remember, this was the area of the unionist Restored Government of Virginia during the Civil War, in concert with the counties that became West Virginia.

      • Craig Howell

The 1846 drive to retrocede the area of DC south of the Potomac to Virginia was led by the big slave trading companies, who were worried that Congress would abolish the slave trade in the District. Most of their business was in Alexandria, not Washington City, so they continued to thrive after Congress did just that a few years later.

        • Kruhn

That and to counter Western Virginia’s weight in The House of Burgesses with their lack of attachment to slavery.

        • stuckinthewoods

Strange to think of these areas of the present DC metro area as separate cities with separate fortunes. Georgetown was a port itself then, now expensive shops and residences. Which states bought slaves, which areas had slaves to sell, which states preferred cheaper imported slaves, which states dealt in shipping slaves, which states had investors in developing regions like AL and MS…the early 19th C was so complicated and different from now it’s hard to comprehend the time. It’s like reading about some fictional country. I have in front of me an 1854 guide, 8 years after this…unbelievable difference, not much beyond what appears to be (unnamed) Logan Circle.

I have a much better idea: let’s kick red states out of the union altogether. I’m sick of them sucking money from blue states.

Instead, let’s cancel the citizenship of red state inhabitants, then be nice and agree to let them stay in their homes if they buy annual licenses. Or maybe temporary work visas.

    • SelectFromWhere

32 million people in Red states voted for Clinton last year, and almost 22 million in Blue states voted for Trump.

TRANSLATION: when things don’t go as I wished them to go, then everyone should rearrange the world to suit my fantasies.

    • RoFaWh

      Sounds very trumpian.

  • William

Falwell should consider moving his church and University to Zimbabwe.

  • Puck

How does he know what the founders intended? Using his crystal ball again? If they intended anything they would have written in the constitution that dc is for the conflicted. I believe they intended that there would be no liberty university.

    • RoFaWh

Just more bullshit pulled straight out of his ass.

    • paganguy

Because that’s what the voices in his head tell him.

  • Steven H

Everyone is conflicted in a democracy!!! The whole point of democracy is that the voters have a vested interest in the outcome.

There’s no indication that the founders intended for anyone to live in DC anyway, and all of them (you know, the politicians who are clearly conflicted) and their white, male employees were allowed to vote.

Also, it’s a sin against this country that the nearly 700,000 people living in DC don’t get to vote for Congress. There are more of us than there are Vermonters and Wyomingjits.

  • The_Wretched

    Falwell Jr hates democracy?

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Most rabid Christians do, after all, God is a King, he has no time for things like freedom…only obedience.

  • DN

He wants to give us all of northern virginia? Is he familiar with the US constitution? Taking on NOVA would result in a District greater than 100 square miles. Which is unconstitutional. Does he seriously want 2/3 approval in both houses plus 3/4 state approval of a 28th amendment?

Gotta love how conservatives wrap themselves in the Constitution but only when it suits them.

  • LeeCMH

I don’t think Virginia will go for NOVA. Think about all the taxes the state gets from those suburbs.

  • coram nobis

    Pride goeth before a Falwell.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

  • Kruhn

Sure Sprawn of Falwell! Because as you read the Act that established the District of Columbia, it says it is a 10 square mile district, so only Arlington could revert back to DC. And while we’re at it, asshole, Arlington County reverted back to Virginia so that the state legislature could have more slaveholders as delegates to counter the freeholders and yeoman farmers of what later became West Virginia. I doubt even the most rabid Republican wants to lose the Commonwealth’s electoral weight.

    • JAKvirginia

Well… actually, the VA part of the District was reverted back to VA after the Civil War as punishment for seceding. Fun fact: the land was returned but not the river. At the end of King Street in Old Town Alexandria is a marina. The boat residents pay taxes to DC.

      • Kruhn

Nope. That happened prior to the Civil War.

        • JAKvirginia

          Correct. Thank you.

  • RoFaWh

I wonder what his financial crimes are.

Thoughts and prayers for all Republicans who lost last night.

  • cleos_mom

But can he pray away those epic D.C. traffic jams?

  • Snarky

So Falwell is saying that the only way to win VA is to handwave and not count one third of the state’s population?

GOP losers just admitted that they only appeal to rednecks, and they wish only rednecks could vote.

  • Richard B

I am so looking forward to the day when the dishonest, amoral narcissist is driven out of office and his embracing scamvangelist enablers, like Jerry Fallwell, Jr. never let go of their anchor Trump and sink to the bottomless depths of obscurity.

  • Paula

Shutup asshole. Remember what happened The last times you guys tried that!

  • xzargo

Fuck you and the whore you rode in on.

  • ErikDC

Even if Virginia gave back Arlington County and all of Alexandria to the District (only part of Alexandria was ever part of DC), Northam still would have won by 150,000 votes. Even with all of Fairfax County included with Arlington and Alexandria (an absurd idea if you’re going by the founders original intent, none of which was ever part of DC), Northam still would have eeked out a narrow victory. Giving the District all 3 of those counties would make DC bigger by population than a quarter of all states and equivalent to the population of New Mexico. There is a better chance Falwell will be elected Pope someday than of that ever happening and, even if it did, Ralph Northam would STILL be Governor-Elect of the state of Virginia today.

The Republicans just got shellacked last night.

I was actually wondering whether, in ALL Red south-western Virginia, there might be move to join WV (ironic, since WV originally split because they stayed w/ the Union in the Civil War).

    • jerry

Not likely, though SW VA, E KY, SE OH, and the WV southern coal counties do have everything in common.

  • SelectFromWhere

Wonder how much economic growth for the state comes from that region, compared to the rural west?

  • Danny Higgins

He must have forgotten his, and the bible’s, ideas about “God puts those in power that he wants to lead.” Remember Jerry? You say that all the time about Trump. Well, Bucko, if that is true then God has put a Democrat man in the Virginia Governor’s chair and a Transgender woman in a Virginia House seat. Who are you now to deny God’s wishes?

    • Gianni

They always forget those applicable Bible pieces when they don’t like what has happened. Then it overwhelmingly becomes the hated ones’ fault for somehow blowing past God’s control. It’s in those cases that God has “allowed” the hated thing to happen – thereby, it was still under His control. It’s called ‘pretzel logic’.

  • Charlie

maybe Jerry Jr. should take Liberty U. out of Virginia, perhaps to Alabama or a more welcoming state…not sure that any of us would miss him or the school…

    • Gianni

Alabama would certainly be more in line with his fundie thinking/beliefs.

  • ArchiLaw

Thereโ€™s always a scene when you canโ€™t win fair. BTW, Rev, Fairfax and Loudoun Counties were never part of DC. Thanks for playing.

  • Davester

This is the best he can do? His dad was a much better drama queen/right-wing ambulance chaser/rabble-rouser.

    He deleted that tweet apparently.
