Election Returns Open Thread

Polls will be closing shortly in a number of important elections. In Virginia, the gubernatorial battle between Democrat Ralph Northam and Trump acolyte Ed Gillespie promises to be a nail-biter.

Also in Virginia, transgender candidate Danica Roem has proven to be strong challenger for viciously anti-LGBT loony bird Bob Marshall’s seat in the state House.

In Atlanta, former city council president Cathy Woolard could become the city’s first openly lesbian mayor. Woolard, the first openly gay elected official in Georgia history, addressed this year’s LGBT journalists meeting in Orlando and we all came away impressed.

And in New York City, Bill De Blasio is expected to win reelection easily, although some local outlets are saying that the margin of his victory and voter turnout in general will be comment on his bumpy first term.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

    Go Northam!!!

Its gonna be long night in Virginia.

      • Mike_in_the_Tundra

It took me a minute to figure that out. Of course, right now I would find a game of “Find Your Foot” challenging.

      • JAKvirginia

If Gillespie wins, it is I who may GO! To another country. Seriously…..

This POS is among the most evil anti-LGBT lawmakers in the country and his ban was the worst of all the ones passed.
Be great to finally see him taken down by the community he has waged war on for so long.

    • Leo

The shit her opponent’s pulled (mailers, etc.) is really abhorrent. If Danica wins I’ll be shocked and some of my faith in humanity may be restored.

      • Vinnie NYC

        Restored 💯

    • Oscarlating Wildely

Come on, sister. Kick his ass!

        YAY!

      • 55% against an incumbent? Wow!

        • Todd20036

It’s the Trump effect. 2/3 of America really hate republicans right now.

          • stuckinthewoods

Not just the trump effect. She is a formidable candidate and ran a good race on the main local issue of transportation while keeping herself above Marshall’s slurs.

          • Todd20036

            Yup. She talked about traffic.

Gillespie kept calling Danica by the wrong gender.

          • BJORN RAGNVALDR

Right. She brought solutions to the table, he brought division and hate. People are catching on….

          • kaydenpat

        That’s a big win.

Yes, Northam did not exactly run the greatest campaign in the history of the Commonwealth, but who gives a rat’s? No, he (and the Dems) did not focus on the economy. No, he (and the Dems) didn’t do much for the “vision thing” and yes, he (and the Dems) didn’t exactly light up the excitement meter– but all of this sounds familiar.
At this point, the goal is to beat the Republicans, period.

In VA, a state that went for her, it’s at least partial optics and bragging rights and a shot in the arm. Let’s hope it goes our way or VA will be cause celebre for Trumpian eons. We need to see the tide turn AND we need to get campaign shit together. Let’s get the first one done and then get our asses to even more work done.

  • another_steve

    I’m not hopeful.

I’d like to be, but I’m too old for that.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

Ossoff’s loss in the Georgia 6 was certainly discouraging, but it’s time for the tide to change!

      • another_steve

        We hope.

Personally, if they passed an ordinance decreeing that all people over the age of 60 should be killed (myself included), I might concur with that.

Our demographic group is largely to blame for the horror that is America today.

      • robindaybird

discouraging, but he was a lot closer than a democrat in Georgia would be normally.

      Right there with ya

    • Cuberly Deux

      I hear ya.

We are cynical of all the Presidents actions. But I truely believe that his rantings about Islam and NFL and AntiFa and Hillary and journalists and the FBI are embraced by swing voters in swing states.
      We’ll find out tonight

      • another_steve

Donald Trump and his advisers are very tuned in to the swing vote.

They understand the secret, silent and unspoken “motivators.”

        • gaycuckhubby

Yep. All his crazy rants are rooted in an understanding of what white middle class people want to hear

          • paganguy

The problem is this shit is probably inside even some liberal Virginians. That’s what worries me. Are they actually going to shit in the middle of the dining room table over statues. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BheE3pvfIVY

      • gaycuckhubby

        Yes. Some of them will.

      • Lizard

If Dems don’t run a paper campaign against her, I give up. That has to be the easiest campaign strategy ever handed to a political party on a silver platter.

Of course, it’s a clerk position. Need someone to challenge her for it and I don’t live in Kentucky.

    Marshall by 7%

    • Oscarlating Wildely

She’s 33. She has a ton of time. She’s gotten this far. Even if Marshall wins, she’s positioning herself very nicely for the future. And god knows the Dems need someone like her.

Northam by 2% or by .02%, he HAS to win! [Would also gladly accept by 22% ;-/ ]

Polls close at 7PM in VA.

      • Oscarlating Wildely

Slight OT: why do states in the same time zone close at different times? (Eg, PA’s is 8:00) Shouldn’t that kind of be a standard thing?

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

States set many of the conditions for their elections.
          It’s their “right”.

          • Oscarlating Wildely

And the states’ logic is kind of funky. I mean, it takes Philadelphians an extra hour compared to Virginians to get to the polls?

        • kelven

Someone posted a county map on another thread from one of the states that does that. The county with a larger black population closed an hour earlier than the predominantly white one. Fancy that.

“The Republican tax plan could financially devastate graduate students”

“The bill would tax tuition waivers as income”

“Farley is one of the thousands of graduate students who would be hit especially hard by Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. If it were to pass unchanged, roughly 145,000 graduate students could be responsible for suddenly paying taxes on the thousands of dollars in waivers that cover their tuition, but that never appear in their bank accounts. A House Ways and Means Committee spokeswoman told The Verge in an email that “the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is focused on providing tax relief,” but then confirmed in a subsequent response that the bill would do the exact opposite for graduate students by taxing their tuition reductions: “This compensation would no longer be excluded from taxable income.”

I always thought he was, for the record. RNC’s paying for his legal fees and Kasich’s kumbayah tour is hilarious.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

That is the only silver lining: A big fat fuck you wake up call to the Dems to set differences aside and find a damned economic vision or say hello to President Trump in 2020 and a Scalia lite *at best* USSC. I have no doubt, however, that will not happen if Northam loses.

    • Dramphooey

It can be depressing when one realizes some people think they’ve contributed by retweeting a supposed witticism. It depresses me when I think about the effort I put into the judicial elections here in Pennsylvania–and that really isn’t much work, checking the PA Bar, the Gertrude Stein Club out of Pittsburgh and maybe a couple of others–and it is probably undone by people who only look at the letter or who think someone’s name sounds like that of a nice person.

        Welcome to democracy in America.

        Thank you.

    • MBear

Also factor in vote tampering, screwing with elwction hours and sites of predominately dem areas, propaganda, gerrymandering, etc. Its not just getting out to vote when the outcome is predetermined

      • Friday

Actual journalism to counter the propaganda could of course overwhelm the cheating, but the supposed ‘liberal media’ just isn’t doing its job.

  • Michael R

Along with former DNC Chair Donna Brazile’s poorly timed book.

Poorly timed, that is, for progress in America. Not her career.

  • ultragreen

The mere fact that not very liberal Democrats are struggling to defeat wacky right-wing Republicans means that this country is f*cked.

    • Friday

Gerrymandering and corporate media and Republican cheating always make things a struggle at least.

      • LesbianTippingHabits

Not every recent election is gerrymandered. Montana’s sole Member of Congress, for example.

        • Friday

Well, it’s impossible for them to gerrymander when there are no district borders to mess with. But they can still mess with polling machine access and voting hours and voter rolls and ID requirements, etc.

          • LesbianTippingHabits

You are quite correct about various non-gerrymandering issues.

A key question for the modern age: Every working-age (18-70) adult needs a photo ID to live in our society now.

Will progressives actually Do Anything to help everyone get one?

            Thank you again.

          • Friday

REpublicans restrict the types of ID accepted in order to prevent poorer people from voting. Simply put, the less money or more minority status one has, the less likely it is all one’s papers are in order at all times. All to ‘solve’ a ‘voter fraud’ problem of their own imagining.

          • LesbianTippingHabits

And a great thing for progressives to do is to help real people to get identification, not only for voting, but for living. Thank you.

          • Friday

Or…. Not let Republican bullshit restrict the voter rolls?

          • LesbianTippingHabits

It’s both. Real people need photo ID in all aspects of life.

And Democrats should care about them, not just harvesting their votes.

          • LesbianTippingHabits

Friday, I agree with you that Republicans imagine “voter fraud” as a problem. Democrats similarly imagine “voter suppression” and working-age (18-70) adults without photo ID – citing bogus ‘statistics’ without specific examples.

But does the Democratic establishment care about real people who don’t have photo ID – if any such people really exist? That’s frankly doubtful.

          • Friday

Actually, voter suppression measures are well-documented, especially since Scalia undid the Voting Rights Act, but even despite this it’s actually been proven in court in Virginia, in this case via gerrymandering and poll closings. The statistics about the ever-more-restrictive ID requirements disproportionately affecting students, the elderly, the poor, and minorities are also well-documented, not imagined.

          • LesbianTippingHabits

Then why hasn’t the media presented actual examples of real people without photo ID?

          • Friday

Who says they haven’t? I can recall a few occasions, actually, including non-driver’s license state IDs being rejected when NRA memberships somehow were.

          • LesbianTippingHabits

            Link(s), please. Thank you.

[This also includes anyone who, in the past, has done business with Donald Trump in any way, shape, or form, and would do business with him again. I found nobody except for Small Business Administrator Linda McMahon, formerly an executive with World Wrestling Entertainment or WWE.]

If another party claims that such media coverage exists, that party can provide at least one example, which I have politely suggested.

Thank you again for participating in this discussion, which has now concluded.

Liberal Virginians want to pretend it wasn’t about racism. They’ve got too much heritage tied up in it. They want to pretend this sappy miniseries from the 1980s is real. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOoGI-knMnw

      • Lars Littlefield

A couple of weeks ago the Parks Department officially changed the name of a canyon that is popular hike near Arches National Park from Negro Bill Canyon to William Granstaff Canyon. William Granstaff was the African-American cowboy who founded a ranch in the canyon in the 1800s. And the name Negro Bill was a name change from Ni**er Bill Canyon, which is what the area was known as on official government maps and everyone else since about 1900.

You should hear the the locals rant and rail against renaming the canyon after Granstaff. It’s turned so bad that locals actually made a national park sign matching all the other signs made by the parks that said Ni**ger Bill Canyon.” They put it up, replacing Negro Bill during the middle of the night.

It seems it’s impossible to escape racism and momentos of The South no matter where one lives in this sad country.

  • gaycuckhubby

Exit polls… 60% VA voters want confederate statues to remain.
Us Dems really don’t know when to pick our battles

    • ultragreen

This is really a local issue. Those statues are usually located on land that is owned by local government, especially larger cities, where voters tend to be more liberal and there are more minorities. Therefore, it is up to local government to decide whether or not such statues should be removed.

To people who are black, those Confederate statues are symbols of terrible oppression, while many white people in the South have glamorized the Confederacy as something noble and heroic. Southern white culture, in my opinion, is badly screwed up. I mean REALLY screwed up.

      • gaycuckhubby

Exactly. But Dems ran on this nationally without leaving any room for their candidates to campaign towards their constituents

      • SoCalGal20

It’s one of the two ways to rewrite the Constitution.

RWNJs dream of calling a Constitutional Convention to create Gilead. Basically.

      • Treant

Indeterminate. Once opened, the convention is not closed until they say it’s closed…and the first thing they’d do is cancel that pesky ratification requirement.

        • Tulle Christensen

they can’t the current constitution is in force until 3/4 of the states ratify a new one

          • Treant

Unless a Constitutional Convention decides to change that. Check. It’s allowed.

    • Michael R

I need this explained to me , but not tonight

      Here is a article I will read later , it’s Koch – y

      https://www.prwatch.org/news/2017/06/13254/koch-convention-rewrite-constitution-roadblocks

    • Dramphooey

Wouldn’t it be funny if Trump makes the GOP a minority and this convention, obviously pushed by conservatives, wound up throwing out the Second Amendment?

    • Tulle Christensen

Why is there always such a freak out over this. If the delegates could actually agree on the changes 3/4 of the states would still have to ratify it, with the current political state I do not see how even the first part of the process would happen

      • Steven H

Is it 3/4 of the states, or 3/4 of the state legislatures? Because state legs are gerrymandered to the hilt and full of some truly dangerous and deranged dotards. Even when they aren’t crazy, legislatures are nearly always under lobbyist control, at least in part because they are far less visible to the public than their federal counterparts.

  • GayOldLady

Hooray 2 for 2. VA & NJ to the Dems

  • Blake J Butler
  • Treant

Has Baby Hands had a meltdown yet? I know his tiny peen got a little hard for Gillespie and this is now the second time voters have taken his recommendation and stamped it, “Return to Fascist.”

    • Opinion Sousaphones

I do not think that an amorphous sack of pus has a peen… boils, perhaps. No peen.

  • Lazycrockett

Healthcare seem to be the number one issue for most voters. This does not bode well for the Republicans tax cuts bill.

I want to beat CNN to the punch and declare Northham winner in Virginia.

  • Ninja0980

If nothing else, the fact a vicious vile anti-LGBT bigot was taken out tonight by a member of the community he spent his whole political waging war on is a victory in itself.

What’s the address for Leavenworth? Maybe that’s the address he’s making for…

I had to remind a Breitbarter that non-whites are Americans, so white people not having as many kids doesn’t mean non-Americans are taking over.

Whiteness is *weird*. I hadn’t thought much about it until recently since I’m ethnically German for the most part.

Just got an email from LGBTQ Victory Fund….announcing that Danica Roem has won her bid for Virginia’s House of Delegates & will be the first out transgender legislator in the nation. Sorry if this has already been mentioned…but it bears repeating.

    • It has, but it DOES bear mentioning. Esp. since her opponent was a blatant transphobe.

      Ohmigod…11 hours, Sam?

I was a high-paid federal executive, and I considered anything over 10 hours an abomination.

My husband was a systems security officer in a major government agency. They tried to get him to carry a beeper 24/7. This was several decades ago.

I was also in government (in a different capacity), and they tried that on me, too. We both said “no.”

We were both good, so they didn’t fire us. 😉

      • Sam_Handwich

we have an out of state organ builder visiting and we’re ripping apart the organ at the church i work at, trying to fix some problems with dead notes, etc. it’s been worthwhile, but i’m getting a little sick of it. lol

Was that in the era when work was considered ended when one leaves the office?

        • another_steve

          Lol.

They tried to get me to carry a “beeper” at home.

I said to them, “fuck you.”

My brother is in IT. He has 15 minutes to hit “OK” when his phone alerts of him of a problem. After that his entire team is notified. And then after an hour his boss. And then after 90 minutes the big boss.

The common wisdom is that “moderate” (yeah, right) Republicans feel like they can’t win their primaries next year, and so are throwing in the towel now (when it doesn’t seem so craven). If that’s true, the outcome will be the GOP running far-FAR-right loony-toon candidates. Hopefully that will turn off Independents and moderate Republicans, and the Democrats will run effective candidates that people actually want to vote for, not just as a protest vote against the GOP candidate.

    • Gretchen

Jimmy Duncan from TN District 2 isn’t running either. He announced ages ago. I wonder why he never makes the list.

      • David Walker

Same with mine, Charlie Dent in PA. Sorry to see him go. He probably would have been primaried out…he had some integrity, which is hardly what central PA considers congressional material.

        • Gretchen

I am thrilled to see mine go. Three generations of Duncans have held that seat for something like 60 years. This one’s son can’t run because he was ousted from local office and convicted of some funny business involving the payroll. The latest dirt is that Jimmy has been paying the son monthly out of campaign contributions. He claims it is for being his manager. Good riddance to bad rubbish. We have several excellent Dems running for his seat, so I’m pretty excited to get to primary season.

Ohio Voters Reject Limits to State Drug Prices

Voters in Ohio defeated a measure on Tuesday that would have limited the price of prescription drugs purchased by the state.
The referendum would have required that the state pay no more for drugs than what the federal Department of Veterans Affairs pays for those same drugs. The provision would have applied to state-purchased drugs bought as part of the Medicaid program for low-income people.

    • Treant

The industry spent megabucks trying to tell Ohioans that drugs would not be available if they couldn’t charge outrageous prices for them.

Lee Carter, a Democrat and a member of the DSA, defeated Jackson Miller, a huge upset there. The Democratic establishment abandoned Carter, who ran to the left of the establishment both fiscally and environmentally and took no corporate or party money.

    • fuow

We’ve still got about 30 minutes before the polls close here in The Beehave State. There are a bunch of Independents (read: mormons who decline to admit they are Republican) and a few Democrats (read: brave meat for the grinder). We hope that Kathie Allen will make a decent showing, but she won’t win. Even though she’s made a load of campaign money from the Chaffetz loathers, her district (my district) is hopelessly conservative.

So this is one swing state, there are at least a dozen more to go….but tonight we can savor a sweet victory.

Despite a frustrating conversation, a socially liberal friend of mine in VA Beach who despises Nazi Trumpanzees voted Gillespie because he’s worried about Northam raising taxes on seniors like him on a fixed income. In our quest to win the middle/independents, we have to be aware that our positions on financially strapped Americans matters as much as it does on social issues.

I don’t get that. I’ve known since high school, GOP = party of the rich. High school. And good grief, I wish that friend remembered that George Bush once tried to privatize SS.

Then there is a messaging issue outside of the Blue states.

As the last generation of religious dinosaurs die off, even many conservative young people are mostly supportive of LGBT issues.

In my purplish red state, dems are increasingly seen as only raising taxes and wasting the money on spendy projects of little use outside of big cities. The Dems are creating that perception themselves. Purple state Dems cant win elections running on blue urban state issues. Jobs in rural America too.

Blue state dems need to wake up, smell the coffee and realize they can’t win the Senate, the House or White House by minimizing and ignoring issues that affect rural and swing states and people who don’t have large Wall St portfolios.

      P.S.: Pinelo, “Bernie’s not a Democrat” is a right-wing talking point.

      • SoCalGal20

Bernie literally REFUSES to join the Democratic Party. Therefore, he is not a Democrat. He’s an Independent.

        • Yet, he ran the 2016 primary as a Dem, caucuses with the Dems, and is helping reform the Party little by little. Just because he has an “I” on his suit doesn’t make him not a Dem. To use “Bernie ain’t a Dem” as a criticism is a right-wing strawman.

Of all the things said about Trump, the one that sticks in my mind is the testimony of a woman who went to first grade with him. She said it was weird discovering that since he was six years old, he has declined intellectually. (paraphrased)

        It’s on the Guardian website.

  • Leo

    MEDICAID EXPANDED IN MAINE AAAAAHHHHH

    • safari

      It wasn’t?

      • It wasn’t. LePage kept vetoing it.

        • safari

Was it just a split that lead to LePage? He’s seriously someone who shouldn’t even be capable of holding a job.

    • JCF

Welllll… the Wisconsin gerrymandering case that SCOTUS is reviewing is on a *partisan* basis, not racial. [This is still good news, regardless.]

Trump should visit South Korea’s former President while he’s there. She could give him some tips on making the transition from power to prison.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I will stop envying South Korea the second he is jailed as well. And her stuff was small potatoes in comparison, at least she wasn’t selling HER country out to NK.

  • gaycuckhubby
    • Adam King

Positivity is so refreshing! I’d almost forgotten it existed.

      • David Walker

I’m glad I watched this. She’s going to be a force to be reckoned with, I think.

    • Oscarlating Wildely

      THIS!

    • worstcultever

      Really wonderful! First trans president!

  • boobert

We went out for a while to a get together for a woman running for township committee here in NJ. Sadly she lost by around 70 votes. It was great to see the dems won the 2 governor races. Now the moron can back track about the influence of his support. We can only hope the same will happen in Alabama. trump is a national embarrassment, and now becoming a world embarrassment.

  • Lazycrockett

Northam win is now at 9 pts.

It’s almost like people want to both live and not go bankrupt.

      • Tulle Christensen

Who could have guessed such a thing

      • greenmanTN

        Let’s not be hasty here…

  • Talisman

Maybe the democrats will wake up and realize they are strong?

    • Leo

Even just care to drive to the polls, fuck. Demographics are on our side.

      • Talisman

My polling place is now within walking distance. But I drove to the polling place when it was literally in a shed in the middle of nowhere.

We didn’t have an election here, tho.

    • safari

They are. They just need a “message”. And that’s no small thing to create.

      • safari

“Not this” is what the GOP has run on for 20 years. And now… well… lol

      • teeveedub

So true. The underlying principles of the Democratic party are not that difficult to articulate. But there needs to be consensus on just how to express those principles and, unfortunately, to express them in soundbites, buzzwords, and slogans so that folks with short attention spans can absorb them.

      • Talisman

They shouldn’t. The SCOTUS and judiciary should be message enough.

      • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

        … or a massage?

    • DaddyRay

Maybe Democrats will finally figure out we can win when we actually show up during non-Presidential elections

      • worstcultever

        Zackly. TURNOUT. PERIOD.

    • Opinion Sousaphones

Well, they did win the popular vote in the presidential election, and that despite gerrymandering.

      • Lazycrockett

Its voter suppression and Russia interference that cost us the election. and a blaise electoral college that gave us this nightmare.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’m hoping some non-Dem people saw what a triple GOP fed government is in reality and realized that the GOP was full of shit. God damn, they’re really slow and stupid but the GOP has been nothing but super blatant.

It is too much to hope that Christie will slither away down some hole, never to be heard from again?

    • Jon Doh

      A very big hole.

      • Paula

        A mine shaft perhaps?

        • Adam King

Hope he doesn’t plug up any subway tunnels.

          • Paula

NYC better keep a sharp eye on that new water tunnel.

          • 2guysnamedjoe

Ever read Table Money, by Jimmy Breslin? It’s about sandhogs, their families, and the water tunnel. It might still be available at public libraries.

          • Paula

I’ve not heard of it. I fear for the Sandhogs lives if Christie were to take up residence down there.
            CHUD Christie Humanoid Underground Dweller.

          • 2guysnamedjoe

It came out about 30 years ago, but it’s still worth a read.

          • 2guysnamedjoe

He was late for meeting in Manhattan. He got stuck in the Holland Tunnel.

Looks like a quicklime furnace. THat ought to do. 🙂

maybe Fox will give him an early morning yoga show

    • Treant

      He’d get stuck.

      (/sizeist comment)

No, blowhards never go away. Fortunately, he’s not photogenic and doesn’t speak well, so he’ll probably never be a Fox “News” person.

      • Paula

The clammy, sweaty look is too much for them, too?

        • Opinion Sousaphones

He is likely too dark… too “ethnic.”

  • worstcultever

K, a couple more triumphal hits off the doob and off to bed

Just not enough relieved YAYS in this world!

  • Leo

I want to feel joy but I’ve been so downtrodden I’m still in “relief” phase.

Maybe I’ll get to joy tomorrow.

    • DaddyRay

I am taking joy in the fact that we don’t have to hear Trump gloat

      • Opinion Sousaphones

I find myself giggling, then falling silent, and then smiling an EVIL little smile… over and over and over.

    • SoCalGal20

      Relief is also good! 🙂

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme
    • another_steve

The pundits – still trying to analyze today’s results – are leaning toward “the end of the successful Trump appeal to bigotry and hyper-nationalism.”

      That bodes well.

      Very well indeed.

    • Cuberly Deux

Relief, yep, and maybe a little emboldened.

Whoa. WHOA. They need to capitalize on this. Um. NOW.

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Although health care was clearly in favor of #Northam. Guns were more divided in terms of support between Gillespie and him.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

That’s the thing about guns. It’s not enough to be in the majority (90% actually want background checks), you have to be willing to vote AGAINST someone just because they kiss NRA ass. It’s got to become as much a wedge issue AGAINST a NRA butt kisser. It’s got to become a huge negative to blabber “thoughts & prayers” without doing anything.

In 2018, we’re going to unseat Paul Ryan from Congress.

Please do not use Paul Ryan and the word “coming” in the same sentence. Kthxbai.

      • Talisman

Ryan will have to seek consolation from Shock.

They can go visit a glacier together. And stay there.
