Billionaire Robert Mercer Revealed To Have Funded Breitbart With War Chest Parked In Offshore Tax Haven

The Guardian reports:

Leaked documents and newly obtained public filings show how the billionaire Mercer family built a $60m war chest for conservative causes inside their family foundation by using an offshore investment vehicle to avoid US tax.

The offshore vehicle was part of a network of companies in the Atlantic tax haven of Bermuda led by Robert Mercer, the wealthy hedge-fund executive and Bannon patron whose spending helped put Trump in the White House and aided a resurgence of the Republican right.

Mercer, 71, appears as a director of eight Bermuda companies in the Paradise Papers, a trove of millions of leaked documents on offshore finance reviewed by the Guardian, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and other partners. The files include a copy of Mercer’s US passport and other private data.

The feds are currently pursuing Mercer’s hedge fund for nearly $7 billion in back taxes.

  • FAEN

Nazi’s shouldn’t be allowed to have billions of dollars.

  • Butch

Bannon has the power he has because of the Mercers and because the courtier press has decided to grant it to him. That’s it.

  • crewman

Mercer brought us the highly toxic and anti-American Breitbart and Milo Yiannopoulos. He has sickened the American political body by bringing to the mainstream a neo-Nazi, white supremacist movement.

To add insult to injury, we now learn it was paid for by American tax payers, in “stolen” money that should have rightfully been paid in taxes. He stole from us, and pushed us carelessly close to a civil war. He is a disgusting human being. I hope he’s punished to the full extent of the law and ends up spending the rest of his life in prison.

    • canoebum

He won’t see one day in prison.

      • GayOldLady

I bet he does. Maybe a tennis court prison, but I think he’ll be indicted.

        • canoebum

I’d like to think you’re right, but he’s well protected.

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

He (and his daughter Rebekah) seem to be at the center of all this mess.

    • AlternativeQuacks

Even worse than Milo and Breitbart, Mercer is behind Cambridge Analytica, largely responsible for Brexit and Trump and now they have their sights set on the upcoming Mexican election.

    • Goodboy

Now his daughters are in charge of Breitbart so he doesn’t have to get his reputation muddied.

      • lymis

        Yeah, that’ll work.

      • Todd20036

The only ones who’ll be fooled by that, want to be fooled by that.

  • Leo

Forget the tax havens a sec. Again, reminder folks, Rebekah tried to pay Guccifer 2.0 for the stolen e-mails she found out about ahead of time with Dad’s money. Robert, his daughters, and every member of Cambridge Analytica will be in prison by the time this is all over.

    • Rebecca Gardner

      I hope so!

    • canoebum

      Conspiracy charges for all involved.

      • Leo

        Worse honey.

        • canoebum

As far as those involved with Cambridge, I’m not sure what other charges could be brought. They used stolen data to target voters in the Mid-west, which put Trump in the White House, but proving their actions threw the election will be difficult.

          • SoCalGal20

Cambridge Analytica was also involved in Brexit. Follow the money!

    • I hope and pray your prediction comes true —and soon!

Owe (steal) $7 billion in back taxes, the Feds pursue you.
Steal (owe) a cigar, the Man will kill you.

Better to be a billionaire, innit?

    • GayOldLady

Taking a box of Cigarillos can cost you your life, if you’re a person of color or poor.

Taking the homes, jobs and retirement incomes of millions of people can cost you an unpleasant visit from the IRS, if you’re a plutocrat.

      • 2guysnamedjoe

They “have people” who deal with those unpleasant visits.

        • GayOldLady

And the irony of it all is that those people, in the end, are our people. 🙂

Projection and FUD seems to underlie everything they do, so yes. It’s like a corollary to Dunning-Kruegar (the stupid are too stupid to know how stupid they are; or they fail to understand enough to know how much more there is to know). The corrupt are only capable of corrupt thinking and can’t imagine thinking in any other way – ergo , everyone else is doing it too.

Why do we keep allowing billionaires to exist? Their mischief destroys the world.

    • Tawreos

because they are the only ones that can afford to buy the protection needed to keep the poor away and they are also smart enough to give money to the right places to keep the poor fighting themselves instead of the billionaires.

    • The_Wretched

Not everyone does. The Germans in particular have a static ~ 11% of wealth in the hands of the few. We in the US (as the founders wanted) had very high taxes in the highest bracket and inheritance (death!!!)(free money!!!) taxes as well as the rule against perpetuities.

Oh folks, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I think we’ll soon find out that the majority of our legislators, on both sides of the aisle, are corrupted by monies that can be traced back to money laundered for Russians and possibly actors in the Middle East.
We have a long way to go in this investigation that i think will take down everyone in the Trump family, his cabinet, the leadership of the Republican Party, some in the Democratic Party and an all-star lineup of U.S. millionaires and billionaires including some of our very own tech billionaires. This is going to be the crime of the millennium.

My parents we lifelong Republicans. And I doubt that if they were alive today, they’d even recognize what their party has turned into. My mom would be spitting tacks at this point.

She never saw any conflict with being a Republican and being absolutely committed to things like racial and sexual equality (took her longer to get on board with LGBT equality, but she was adamantly opposed to active discrimination – and yes, I know, but she was also born in 1923, so there was that.)

I’ve spent most of my life disagreeing with “their type of Republican” on a lot of important points. But I was also very aware that there were plenty of intelligent, honorable, and decent human beings who were members of the Republican party and financial and foreign-policy conservatives.

So that really leaves me believing that the current crop of GOP “leaders” are up to their eye-balls in corruption and crooked dealings, and the recent revelations make me think that they’re all covered with Russian dirt, because otherwise, it’s hard to imagine any reason why more of them, in and out of offices, wouldn’t be screaming bloody murder at this point.

And yes, some highly placed Democrats as well. They’re all beholden to Big Money, and it looks more and more like Big Money is in bed with Big Russia.
