Texas Police: Mass Shooter Was In Domestic Argument With Mother-In-Law, Sent Her Threatening Texts

The New York Daily News reports:

Gunman Devin Kelley was embroiled in a “domestic situation” with his mother-in-law, who attended the Texas church where he killed 26 people before shooting himself, authorities said Monday.

Kelley sent his estranged mother-in-law “threatening texts” sometime before he attacked the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Freeman Martin of the Texas Department of Public Safety told reporters.

“This was not racially motivated. It wasn’t over religious beliefs,” Martin said. “There was a domestic situation going on with the family and in-laws.”

According to fake news sites, Kelley was an atheist member of antifa who was stopped by that famous “good guy with a gun.” In fact, police say he shot himself as they closed in.

      • Tatonka

This is a common oversight. Rarely do we give Hitler sufficient credit for being the guy who killed Hitler.

  • Because God forbid we view domestic violence as a precursor to these attacks. That would force too many right wingers to look introspectively.

The law designed to prevent domestic abusers from having guns has been repeatedly challenged in the courts by the gun lobby.

    • The_Wretched

Lautenberg Amendment should have meant he couldn’t buy a gun but there’s ways around that.

    • Todd20036

The military kicked him out and gave him a dishonorable discharge.
But hey, 2nd amendment and all that.

      • coram nobis

Bad conduct discharge and 12 months’ confinement. Might turn up on a background check, but probably not a disqualifier in some states. Should have been, but …

        • Chucktech

Sure as fuck not in Texas…

        • John30013

The confinement and bad conduct discharge were for domestic violence. So that *should* have disqualified him from purchasing firearms. Not sure how Texas treats that particular circumstance, or whether he acquired the gun legally, and if so through what channel (gun dealer vs private party).

Gun laws are so fucked up in this country!

          • kareemachan

TX doesn’t give a fuck about DM.

          • Scott MB

Unfortunately a bad conduct discharge doesn’t disqualify from getting a weapon, only a dishonorable does. However, his incarceration for a violent crime automatically disqualifies him by federal law from owning or posessing a firearm.

The question becomes who sold him the gun? If he got it from a dealer then the dealer must be prosecuted for murder as well for illegally seling him a firearm.

An extensive background check would have brought up the violent felony. This is something Rethugs and the NRA fight against, why? Trump signed exec order to make it easier for mentally ill people getting a gun. This is all a farce. If a white man kills with a gun it is automaticlly designated as a mental issue. If this was a brown or black skinned person it is automatically terrorism.

There is no good time to tlk bout gun control, however the converation must be had. Just because the NRA owns you only means you need to be removed from government for taking a bribe.

    • Buford

He apparently didn’t possess the guns legally, so the issue here is that it’s far too easy to get a gun ILLEGALLY in this country.

  • Bambino

i said it yesterday, but its what I feel .It goes against my my own inate standards of compassion and empathy. Texas has consistantly and repeatedly held block headed and dumb founded views basically “we are Texas and we don’t have to” Then something like this happens ,they go back to thought and prayers and other useless crap, but never address the elephant in the room GUN CONTROL. My compassion and empathy will roll freely when you start using the good common sense you should have been born with . Till then produce more fodder for future shooters and keep blocking and defending gun laws. You are the problem

    • Bambino

Guns and amos are like cracks. You can’t rationalize with addicts. Not when NRA is acting like Pablo Escobar cartel with the support of a corrupted government on the take the likes of Paul Ryan and his Republican thugs.

      • JWC

The unwillingness to act. They are all crooks in the same bed. A suggestion. The next time there is anything remotely responsible in power in DC, revisit the first ammendment. The constitution was not written in times of computers and jet planes yet ammendments have been incorporated to encompass these. The argument that it cannot be changed is bogus. What do you think the word ‘ammendment’ means. We no longer need muskets for the procurement of food or to defend our security. Now that there is a Union that governs the nation and supports its military( handsomely) , the need for a local militia is redundant, in fact it smacks of a certain level of sedition . This is a fact, often blurred, by the NRA. in their “you need guns to defend your home’. No you don’t . Many countries around the world have the statistics to support and prove this. Even if this was remotely true , again the NRA has blurred the lines on that. If a Colt 45 will do the job think how effective an AK47 with a ‘bump stock’ would be. Bloody amazing. Donald J. Trump and the NRA cater , pander and understand this small base. The white male, age range 25-65, who feels forgotten, left out and passed by. He is frustrated that he feels he is not listened to and no one hears him. He thinks religion will help, and to some limited extent it does. Be it a local religion or ISIS or the NRA. In his frustration he wants to stop the noise. He never grasps that, he , himself , is as much the problem , as the problem itself. Like a stream of water he seeks the simple and easiest course to action. It’s a social issue that unfortunately is not addressed . There is little reason to address it as it provides a source of imbalance in stucture .This allows the NRA to prey upon them and let the gun companies make insane profits It also allows the NRA to keep pressure on the government tp provide the impetus to perpetrate the insanity. All in all in the American public who suffers the most yet it is the American public who has the power to stop it all. They broke up Standard Oil and Microsoft now brake up the NRA. Know them for what they are, an evil terrorist group hiding under acloak of respectibility and honor Tear away that cloak and expose them for what they are ,the perveyors of sedition

      • Gretchen

Most Christians have no idea what the bible says other than a handful of cherrypicked verses that fit nicely on bumper stickers. The ones who do know have to perform mental gymnastics to get past the cognitive dissonance. In my experience atheists are often much more knowledgeable about the bible because it requires actual thought and effort to learn enough about a subject to be able to refute the years of indoctrination and societal pressure to accept the bible without question. Christians will tell you to accept the whole kit and kaboodle on “faith”, but what they actually mean is that you should remain ignorant and just follow the church blindly.

I can’t speak for all atheists, but personally I don’t need a commandment to know shooting people is bad.

Ironic that Trump has called both the Texas and Las Vegas shooters as “sick”, “demented”, “mentally ill” and so forth, when one of Trump’s only legislative accomplishments was a law to make it easier for the mentally ill to get guns. Yeah, I was on twitter and other sites last night and the laughably photoshopped “proof” the reich wing and others were sharing were just that, laughable. They’re not even trying anymore, it’s so pathetic. Sadly, while we can laugh at these morons and their echo chamber propaganda campaigns, the fact remains there is a large swath of Murika that believes this shit…and they own guns as well.

There is a reason why my nightmares have started to feature armed militias and hiding in my barn.

“All options remain on the table with mass shootings” except increased gun controls.

Domestic violence is highly correlated to mass shootings

More background on this creature in NYT.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Before a gunman entered a rural Texas church with a ballistic vest and a military-style rifle, killing at least 26 people on Sunday, he was convicted of assaulting his wife and breaking his infant stepson’s skull.

In 2012, while stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, Devin P. Kelley, 26, was charged with “assault on his spouse and assault on their child,” according to the Air Force.

“He assaulted his stepson severely enough that he fractured his skull, and he also assaulted his wife,” said Don Christensen, a retired colonel who was the chief prosecutor for the Air Force. “He pled to intentionally doing it.”

I’m surprised, not to say dismayed, he only got 12 months’ jail time. He should still be doing time in military prison for something like that.

(ADDENDUM: Manual for Courts-Martial table of punishments for Art. 128 shows punishment of 5-8 years for aggravated assault and battery on a child, along with DD or BCD. He should not have been at liberty).

The NYT story also mentions that he was an avowed atheist. The religious right wing is going to wave that around.

Gunman Devin Kelley took high doses of psych meds before he killed people in church. Proof people who take psych meds get guns and kill people.
