RETIRING: Rep. Lamar Smith Joins GOP House Exodus

“For several reasons, this seems like a good time to pass on the privilege of representing the 21st District to someone else. At the end of this Congress, I will have completed my six-year term as chairman of the Science, Space and Technology Committee. I have one new grandchild and a second arriving soon! And I hope to find other ways to stay involved in politics. With over a year remaining in my term, there is still much to do. There is legislation to enact, dozens of hearings to hold and hundreds of votes to cast.” – GOP Rep. Lamar Smith, joining the nearly two dozen House Republicans who will not seek reelection in 2018.

RELATED: Lamar last appeared on JMG when he declared that climate change is a good thing because melting arctic ice opens up new shipping routes.

  • Tawreos

He should really re-think this and leave now to get ahead on all that retirement stuff.

I remember playing the theme music in HS marching band in 1979…it was also a John Williams score. If you had good brass sections, particularly trumpets, his compositions were usually a good choice. And he wrote lots of music, other than movie scores, specifically for marching bands.

          • Lizard

Recent high school trumpet player and college trombone player, can confirm that the Superman theme is fabulous.

          • jerry

I was trumpet, including in college. I only remember doing “Theme from E.T.”, arranged by grad assistants, in college (I’m sure we probably did some other Williams music, but we did so much I really can’t remember). But in HS, I remember doing Williams’ music like “Brass Machine”, “Marching Dynamite”, “Gangbusters”, as well as “Superman”.

And even the military forces sent to assist them seem to be ineptly led. Rachel Maddow reported yesterday that the big Navy hospital ship they sent to PR had been moored offshore for over 3 weeks, basically wasting its capabilities while people on the island suffered, and only recently docked at a port, at which point hundreds of people flooded it to get medical treatment. Before they passed, Lamar’s parents were friends of ours through a professional connection with Lamar’s stepfather and my husband. Both Lamar’s biological father and stepfather were gay men in the grand old tradition of married Texas closet cases. I’m sure they both made many trips to the ranch to meet with the foreman. The mother was an incredibly wealthy oil heiress who apparently had an attraction to gay men.
