Trump Shrugs Off Manafort Dumpster Fire: I’m Not Under Investigation And My Name Isn’t Mentioned

The New York Times reports:

President Trump projected an air of calm on Wednesday after charges against his former campaign chief and a foreign policy aide roiled Washington, insisting to The New York Times that he was not “angry at anybody” and that investigations into his campaign’s links to Russia had not come near him personally.

“I’m not under investigation, as you know,” Mr. Trump said in a brief telephone call to The Times late Wednesday afternoon. Pointing to the indictment of his former campaign chief, Paul Manafort, the president said, “And even if you look at that, there’s not even a mention of Trump in there.”

“It has nothing to do with us,” Mr. Trump said. He also pushed back against a report published Monday night by The Washington Post, which the president said described him as “angry at everybody.” “I’m actually not angry at anybody,” Mr. Trump told The Times.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    Ha ha.
    Mueller so has this.

  • Rebecca Gardner

This stupid fuck actually believes he’s not under investigation?
Oh, this is gonna be fun!

Oh, and him talking about himself in the 3rd person is so super creepy.

    • Droz

The third person stuff is from decades of impersonating publicists and former secretaries in order to talk himself up.

      • bkmn

He is used to having John Barron and John Miller praising him to reporters.

    • BearEyes

no – he is ever the conman telling you what he wants to tell you. Just an attempt to try and manipulate the narrative.
Yes – he’s a narcissist and believes his shit doesn’t stink, but he’s enough of a sociopath to always be calculating how he can get away with this.

He thinks he can still bullshit his way out of this because that is what he has been doing all his life. The difference here is he won’t be able to sleaze his way out of this. There is no out-of-court settlement or plea bargain for treason.

          • Nowhereman

It’s actually “Barron”. I keep getting it mixed up with Bannon. Trump used to use the alias “John Barron” to make anonymous phone calls to the newspapers. I’m guessing that Donnie was going for “baron” but didn’t know how to spell it.

          • Bluto

I agree, I don’t care that melania flashed her bewbies, the human body is not shameful. I criticize her for the poor & tawdry quality of her modeling.

Agreed. I could not care less per se’, but it’s the hypocrisy of it all.

Michelle wears sleeveless dresses, and pushes a healthy agenda for kids’ eating habits and exercise habits, and gets chastised over it, and worse.

Melanoma models nude and in lesbian porn, and basically ignores her own cause about cyber bullying, and is an illegal immigrant… and is lionized by those who claimed Michelle looked unprofessional.

This is a good lesson in why Donald needs the rule of law, in hope that some future authority won’t strip him of due process and rule of law and ship him off to Gitmo — like he wants to do with the NYC jihadist.

    https://thinkprogress.org/trump-new-york-attacker-to-gitmo-2fa38ad27eec/

The author in this story knows about case law on this matter.

Many think it not only inevitable but entirely proper that liberty give way to security in times of national crisis that, at the extremes of military exigency, inter arma silent leges. Whatever the general merits of the view that war silences law or modulates its voice, that view has no place in the interpretation and application of a Constitution designed precisely to confront war and, in a manner that accords with democratic principles, to accommodate it.

So, people who lived through Watergate: is this what it felt like? Because this, because of all the talking heads inflaming people, seems much worse.

          • coram nobis

Yes, and it’s not a pretty thought.

    • David Walker

Yes and no. As fuzzybits says, we didn’t have 24 hour news then, but we did have some rabid pro-Nixon types writing and even showing up on TV interviews, as part of the Fairness Doctrine, which was annoying but valuable.

      • Cuberly Deux

I seem to recall that it sorta turned into 24 hr news that final week. The abiding rule in our house was the TV was to be off except for a few hours in the evening. But it was on quite a bit, coverage was pretty intense.

I do recall my parents being visibly upset, they both LOVED Nixon.

    • djcoastermark

no yutz tube back then either.

      • safari

Or animated gifs. It’s amazing people could communicate.

    • coram nobis

It started getting scary after the Saturday night massacre, and then into the final weeks of Nixon’s presidency when we weren’t sure which way he’d jump. We weren’t sure he’d go quietly in late July to early August 1974.

We were fortunate that Spiro T. Agnew imploded separately rather than being in the line of succession.

      • safari

What were people afraid Nixon would do?

        • coram nobis

Refuse to comply with the court order regarding the evidence, or maybe call on part of the military to back him. Crazy rumors that week.

        • SoCalGal20

From some of the things I’ve seen with Rachel and Lawrence’s interviews with Watergate prosecutors and such, one of the things was that Nixon was drinking A LOT and paranoid especially toward the end. I think there were even some concern about him using nukes on somebody.

          • David Walker

I hadn’t heard about the serious drinking, although it’s well within the realm of probability. Pat, his wife, constantly had a buzz going. Betty Ford was at least honest about her alcoholism; ol’ Pat just kind of floated around in a perpetual haze.

          • fuzzybits

            Nixon was always paranoid.

          • SoCalGal20

Yes, but it apparently became even worse toward the end when he was drinking all the time. One of the reasons Watergate was so stupid is that he probably would have won without doing any of that. But paranoia!

Eh! i haven’t watched late night tv shows like the daily show or bill maher since late last year. Everyone was a topic for comedic material last year, though they spent more time laughing last year at baby huey and downplaying Hillary, especially Maher who’s lingo to get people to vote for her was ” well she’s not that bad”. Even if Hillary’s in it, i just can’t find it funny anymore about this atmosphere and this legion of doom administration.

I did like it that that larry wilmore guy got his show canned since all he wanted to talk about last year was bill clintons affairs which seemed to get brought up with hillary which i never found to be funny. Also i think he tried to label it as sexual assault.

And noah while not as bad as Maher or as Wilmore was, still did not take the election serious enough. Because the source of entertainment became our reality, and people are paying the price for the mistake that was made on 11/8.

    • Henry Auvil

When I was a whippersnapper, seeing “Boys in the Band” did not make me proud of who I was. It made me ashamed. I hope the new production is VERY revisionist.

      • Cuberly Deux

Yeah, I’m not particularly a fan.

      • SoCalGal20

It seems to be a love it/hate it sort of thing? It’s being done to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Not sure how revisionist it will be.

        • David Walker

I would hope that it’s not “revisionist” at all. What’s to be gained by covering up something that is part of our history?

          • SoCalGal20

And it may not be. But as you can see from the few comments here it gets a very divided reaction! And I was responding to Cuberly’s Henry’s comment. It’s a 50th anniversary production so I wouldn’t expect massive changes.

          • David Walker

I get the feeling that it’s a generational thing, but I suspect it’s also geographical. Country boy here, starved for anything that didn’t come from the local den of porn. I figured that it was a circle of friends, not necessarily my friends, but I found the “types” to be instructive. I trot the DVD out from time to time because it was important to me then, especially since I had no idea of Stonewall nor what its ramifications were. I totally defend it as a work of art/period piece.

          • Phillip in L.A.

I notice the playwright, Mart Crowley, graduated from Catholic University, and is from Vicksburg, MS. Jus’ sayin.

How much is it “our” history, and how much is it a “history” written by others for us?

          • Strepsi

            Oh no, it’s ours.

          • Phillip in L.A.

Playwright was a closeted, self-hating Catholic?

          • Strepsi

I don’t know, really, but self-hating was a trait of 99% of gay men. Reinforced by actual external hatred 99% of the time. We were inhuman filth, and our own thoughts and desires betrayed us as such to ourselves.

          • Phillip in L.A.

I’m thankful I’m part of the One Percent! 🙂

          • David Walker

Mart Crowley is gay and he wrote the script. Dominick Dunne championed the play and started things moving to the film production going. Most of the actors were gay and those who were not leaped at the chance to be in it, contrary to agents’ stern warnings. The movie director, William Friedkin, was straight but knew what he had in his cast and, since most were stage-only actors at the time, he taught them how to reign in their delivery, since it didn’t have to be heard in the top row of the balcony. The cast had been together for 2 years, I think, around 1000 performances. None of the men left the stage production and all of them appear in their same roles in the movie (and on the original cast album).

          • Phillip in L.A.

Thank you for providing this interesting info, David Walker!

      • gaycuckhubby

I wasn’t ashamed but worried. And not empowered at all. I should watch it again as an adult with a better grasp of queer history

        • Phillip in L.A.

Very good post, gaycuckhubby! I think that expresses better what I felt when I first saw it.

      • 2guysnamedjoe

I’m glad I didn’t see it in my Wonder Years.

        • gaycuckhubby

          I saw it when I was 16.

        • TuuxKabin

I thought I was your wonder years . . . oxo anyway, good to be wondering with you now.

      • Strepsi

I LOVE IT. It has a vicious self-loathing but it’s one of the best-written, wittiest modern plays, and if they keep it a period piece that’s comment enough. I mean, Boys in the Band has been largely disavowed by our community, but is it really more self-loathing than Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly Last Summer, where the faggot is literally cannibalized by vicious urchins?

    • Cuberly Deux

Ugh, I only know the movie and I’ve always cringed my way through it. Some friends of mine just love it, quote it like mad.

      • gaycuckhubby

I just didn’t connect to it. And there were a couple of moments that I found endearing but as a whole it didn’t speak to me or my experience

        • Cuberly Deux

First time I saw it was during the gay film renaissance in the mid-late 80s, sort of the beginning of the end of the tragic gay stereotype. I had a pretty hard time getting through it.

      • SoCalGal20

The article even says it has a very divided reaction. I’ve never seen the movie or a stage production. Does anybody know how the stage production compared to the movie?

        • gaycuckhubby

I’ve only seen the movie. honestly the more I’m reflecting on it tonight the more I realize that it gave me a skewed almost hopeless View Of what gay life would be when I’m older.

          • Strepsi

Well it did, but it’s TRUE – when I came out in the end of the 80s, the only gay character on TV was the self-hating Stephen on Dynasty, and it was absolutely expected you would die of AIDS or die alone. Boys in the Band is a kind of “chosen family”, but there was no expected happy life for gay men until VERY recently.

          • gaycuckhubby

I work with a lot of young queer people. The amount of support they get from their straight families is STAGGERING! and heartwarming and lovely

          • Strepsi

Yes, I call them the post-Glee generation, and Ryan Murphy gets a lifetime pass from me for that alone. Their parents are amazing, and for these younglings nondiscrimination is a given – they also have amazing bullshit detectors. But I think that’s why works like this are important (beyond I think it’s a good play) — to say “look at what we changed, so recently” and “don’t let it go back”.

          • gaycuckhubby

            Yes! Completely agree.
I know some people are worried we assimilate too much or are too heteronormative. But the freedom those young guys and girls have is inspiring

        • David Walker

Virtually identical except for taking the camera outside, particularly in the beginning. It is the same cast.

        • Michael R

I know it was a very successful play , the movie was true to the play but kind of loathed as dated and stereotyped instead of groundbreaking by the time it came out .

          • JCF

Kinda like “The Children’s Hour”. Lillian Hellman WANTED to revise it for the ’61 movie. Didn’t think it was realistic that, by then

            [let’s see if this works]

a woman would kill herself, just for realizing she had lesbian urges

            [There we go!]

            But of course, they didn’t.

        • Cuberly Deux

When I first watched it was during my 2nd attempt to come out of the closet…..it didn’t help.

        • Phillip in L.A.

Just going off my own recollection right now, but the dialogue seemed to me quite “lifted” from the stage-play, since there is not a lot of dramatic action in the movie (except for how the characters speak their lines)

      • 2guysnamedjoe

I first saw it long after its release — on YouTube, in fact. I enjoyed it as a period piece. Les Liaisons Dangereuses never made anyone feel proud about being French.

    • safari

I’ve never sat through it. I think it’d break my heart.

      • stevenj

The film was one of the most depressing I’ve ever seen.

        • Strepsi

I found it hilarious – I laughed throughout!

I mean, it does go darker and slower in Act 2, but almost ALL stage plays do that (which I don’t love).

          • stevenj

I suppose if I’d seen it in the 80’s or 90’s or later I probably would have laughed at it but I saw it in 1970 when it came out. They all just seemed like such a sad lot – I didn’t even know anybody like the characters in the film and was really turned off by it.

      • Phillip in L.A.

You really should experience it, safari! 🙂

        • safari

I will one day. Right now, especially now, I can’t.

    • fuzzybits

    • M Jackson

The revival of “Torch Song Trilogy” currently off-broadway is sensational and sold out. If you’ve only seen the movie like me you’ll be surprised at how goddam funny it really is. It’s been trimmed by about half, to 2 hours 40. This is the fourth play i’ve seen Michael Urie in and he just keeps getting better, I really hope this one moves to Broadway, it is at Second Stage where “Dear Evan Hansen” started last year.

      • Phillip in L.A.

That is such a better play, and written by an out and proud Harvey Fierstein

      • SoCalGal20

        Ooh!

MIchael Urie is great! Also a sweetie. I haven’t seen any productions with him recently but he’s good.

    • JackNasty

Oh my, it’s the return of self-loathing on stage.

I prefer the playful, inspiring works of the lavender quill boys from the next decade: unfortunately no plays of note, just short stories and novels. That happy brave period ended all too soon in the 1980s with AIDS, and a retreat into dreary works where the gay people had to die in the end.

    • JCF

      • ultragreen

Authorities in the Ukraine hate Manafort because he assisted Viktor Yanukovych, the former president of Ukraine who was friendly with Russia, and who is now in exile there. In the Ukraine, Manafort is wanted for questioning by government authorities for possible human rights violations and money laundering, while Yanukovych is wanted for treason. According to hacked emails of Manafort’s own daughters, he had “people killed” in the Ukraine.

        • DaddyRay

Exactly, and if that hatred results in them manipulating the information and it jeopardizes the case it could end up doing more harm than good

    • RoFaWh

My own cat died in early September and for the first time in forty years I am catless. I didn’t realize until she was gone just how big a part of my life she had become. I miss her. [Put that last sentence in flashing neon.]

So be careful: they infiltrate very deeply and when they inevitably die, the feeling of loss can be … well, not overwhelming, but a lot more intense than you may think.

In the meanwhile, give your kitty the best possible life in all respects, including lots of love. At least that way when she passes on, you won’t have so many regrets about things not done while she was alive.

At the moment I’m not actively looking for a replacement. Part of the problem is my age. I’ll be 74 in a couple of weeks, so were I to get a kitten now, I’d probably die before it. My plan is to get a female in the 9-10 age bracket, a female who’s had kittens; bearing young seems to make female cats more serious.

      • Cackalaquiano

I love the idea of you getting an older cat. There are so many in shelters who’ve been given up for one reason or another.

      • ZRAinSWVA

They do, don’t they. The cat before our current two was named Boots (because he loved to stick his head in shoes…go figure), and he lived to be 23!!! Which meant he was a huge part of our lives for the first two decades of our relationship. I still mourn him, and he’s been gone more than 10 years now.

        • yes b’y

awww 23 years old, good for you.

      • Prost Seattle

Last year my step dad died and my sister died 6 days later. Christmas was going to be brutal on my mom, so I planned on making it special, if sad for her. What does my cat decide to do? Oh, have a stroke and need to be put down on Christmas Eve. Bitch. But lord I miss that little princess.

A month ago we rescued a stray mama dog who obviously had recently given birth. She was wandering around the parking lot at the grocery store, running up to everyone, trying to find her humans (who apparently abandoned her). She is our 6th rescue, and I can’t imagine not having her with us. Here’s my hubby holding her. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9090e120e65dc4618e01edb79ef12df64055ab0e11db80a5e5be4c1cb081e053.jpg

    • Cackalaquiano

Cute. My husband and I just bought a house, and when we were in the process, my husband (Mr. “I hate cats” 10 years ago when we met) declared he wanted a kitty. He was shopping around at the shelters weeks ago, finally landing on a kitten that a friend found stray. We adopted the little orange girl, named her ‘Fanta’ and took her in to be spayed and vaccinated. And found out she’s a little boy! He’s cute as hell, quite the cuddler, and our older, fat tabby now has a little brother and they’re getting along well (with just a little meaningless hissing).

    • Steve Smith

Sweet! I always loved cats. Now, I’m allergic to most dog hair, and my husband is extremely allergic to cats (to the point if having to call an ambulance) so we are pet-free. Boring, but it does save a lot of money..

    • This reminds me of a game I thought of with my younger sister (she is 7 years younger). Her doll clothes fit our cats (we would have three or four at a time). We dressed two of the cats up as “Joan” and “Cristina”. “Joan” (whose real name was Henrietta) wore something that looked like a sweater with should pads and used to attack “Cristina” (whose real name was Cosmo). I do not remember if I was wrecked or not at the time, but we used to enjoy watching the cats fight in costume reenacting scenes from the movie “Mommie Dearest”. Mind you, this is before I was out. There were “hints” of my future sexuality then I think that were emerging.

      • SoCalGal20

Religious people who think science is real would be ok (depending on the agency and the person) but evangelicals should not be allowed in government science positions especially if they have no actual science experience.

Personally, I think all the science based agency appointments should not be left to the President and Congress and I think their appointments should be like the FBI director and for some set term, not dependent on the party in power or the President. They should be non-political and there should be non-partisan panels that appoint scientific positions that require appointments (assistant secretaries, etc.)

        • djcoastermark

I am going to have to disagree. Religious people in government are proving they cannot separate their beliefs from the real world or be trusted. Get in, get power, then push their agenda. I know it’s the evy’s who are the prime suspects here, but look around the world and other religious groups who are doing the same thing. This world has got to get past throwing virgins into the volcanoes to satisfy their gods.

Can you have more than one passport?

Yes. U.S. citizens are allowed to have more than one valid U.S. passport at the same time, according to the National Passport Information Center, which is a division of the U.S. State Department.

But in most cases, you are only allowed to have two valid passports at a time, according to the NPIC.

As NPIC notes on its website, holding a second passport “is the exception to the rule.”

It remains unclear why Manafort has three.

  • I just read Mueller’s biography.
    Some pertinent facts-
    1. He is an old money Republican. His mother comes from a very wealthy Railroad family, and he went to St. Pauls School / Princeton.
    2. He served as a Marine Captain in Vietnam. He is very decorated and has a Purple Heart (wounded in action)
    3. He was first appointed by President Reagan to be U.S. D.A. for Massachusetts in 1988.
    4. He was originally appointed by Bush #2 to be FBI Director, and given a 2 year extension by President Obama. His tenure as head of the FBI is the longest since Hoover’s (10 years).
    — Mueller is by no means a liberal or Democrat. He is tough as nails — and my guess is angry at Russian meddling in our elections.
    from Wiki- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Mueller

    • Lazycrockett

Drumpfs cult aren’t republicans. That is what scares me, his voters I fear are disadvantaged who stopped voting ages ago till now.

      • Do you think Kelly knows him socially? They are former Marine Corp. I am wondering if they can “talk turkey”. Do you think they have conversations now or is there a wall here —

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

I can’t see them really talking, other than Mueller saying, “If you ever want to wear a wire, call me.”

        • Lazycrockett

Hell Mueller may share the same views as Kelly he’s just more of a stickler bout the law.

O/T – this has come out tonight. Be careful where you buy your pizza. As for me, I might give Little Caesars a chance.

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c66bb96fce676d5cfef6332749412d06f52da376534fba9efa6255a853bc8df1.jpg

    • johncAtl

And Papa John’s is based in Kentucky. There’s no good reason to add one penny to the state’s tax revenue.

    • John30013

Apart from the fact that his pizza sucks, I swore off Papa John’s when he whined that he would have to add $1 to the price of his pizzas to afford the cost of compliance with the Affordable Care Act. He’s a typical 1%-er who doesn’t give a rat’s ass for the welfare of his employees.

    • Leo Tallant

I have HEARD of Little Caesars Pizza but have never actually seen one and this Papa John person I have never heard of. However if there WAS a Caesar by me I would probably buy from it just because of this internet meme thingy.

      • Gretchen

Unfortunately, Little Caesar’s pizza is really terrible. They have good breadsticks…so good I may or may not periodically stop just to get them for a snack. Little Caesar’s runs a $5 “Hot and Ready” special all the time, and it is the overwhelming choice for inexpensively feeding large groups of teenagers.

Truthfully, knowing these nice things about the owner of Little Caesar’s makes me far more likely to buy food there even if it’s pretty subpar.

Papa John can hangout with the Chick-fil-a folks. I can go a very long time without needing either of them.

        • Bryan

I’m super glad cos’ while I hate their pizza, their breadsticks are to die for and so are their cheesebreads. I used papa johns when I was at UCSD but only because it was the only local thing and delivered til 2 am. And…admittedly their breadsticks and cinnapie are really tasty…..no big loss really…I’ma Round Table whore. I might have to go buy myself a round of crazy bread tomorrow just to stick it to Papa Nazitaintlickerguyovich.

          • Gretchen

I don’t know if all the pizza near me is just crap or if I don’t like pizza as much as I once did. We really only have the big franchises near our house (Dominoes, Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, and Little Caesar’s), so there isn’t much opportunity to try anything else. I have started making “pizza” on thick pieces of ciabatta bread that I slather in melted garlic butter and toast before I put leftover spaghetti sauce with ground beef all over it. I top it with a layer of ricotta, toppings, and cheese. One piece is a meal like a big slab of lasagna. It’s a definite improvement over the cardboard with ketchup they are serving at the major chain places.

          • Bryan

….I have to stick with RT (they use beer in the dough!), Papa Murphy’s or Mountain Mike’s, they’re the only ones who make a garlic/white sauce pizza, I can’t stand tomato sauce cos’ picky as fuck. Rules out anything pre-made from a box too cause I think DiGlorpios and Newmans Own would die a thousand times before they tried something other than red on a pizza. That melted garlic butter sounds incredible on it tho. I’ll have to add that to my leftovers-prep procedure.

When I reheat in the oven I sprinkle Lawry’s seasoned salt over the foil, when the pizza reheats and gets a bit greasy, that absorbs the salt and seasonings and it tastes closer to how it’d taste fresh.

          • Gretchen

That’s a good tip to use the Lawry’s. I wouldn’t have thought of it. I will never know if Papa Murphy’s is good or not; I just can’t bring myself to buy takeout that I still have to cook.

          • Bryan

The ones around you are still take-and-bake? Ours are actual brick/mortar stores that sell actual pizza. We had one by us with a FANTASTIC Sicilian guy named Bob, he looked like Borat and he would go on LOUD (very loud) rants about how effing crazy Bush and the Republicans were (this was back in 2008-09) and how Obama was gonna make it so much better. Super friendly bombastic dude. Last time I saw him he was still bombastic and pro-left, so I’ve no doubt he’d have some incredibly creative and entertaining things to say about Trump and the election. The property manager raised the rent so he had to sell the store and move across town.

ANYWAY, the long story to tell the short one: He’d make this amazing white sauce pizza from a recipe of his mother’s, totally custom in that he didn’t make them the way Papa Murphy’s usually did portion-wise, they were SO good. Sooooooo good.

          • Gretchen

We have brick and mortar stores, but the pizzas are still unbaked. I can’t say why that is. I didn’t realize other places sold them hot. They might be worth a try. I haven’t heard anyone rave about them enough to make me willing to buy one until now.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

OT: This is why I don’t have sympathy for them. Immigrants do all sorts of crap jobs that aren’t the greatest but Trumpeteers turn their noses at retraining. I myself have retrained & done temp work so yeah, I get pretty angry about their attitude.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/awaiting-trumps-coal-comeback-miners-reject-retraining-110652662.html

“When Mike Sylvester entered a career training center earlier this year in southwestern Pennsylvania, he found more than one hundred federally funded courses covering everything from computer programming to nursing.

He settled instead on something familiar: a coal mining course.

“I think there is a coal comeback,” said the 33-year-old son of a miner.

Despite broad consensus about coal’s bleak future, a years-long effort to diversify the economy of this hard-hit region away from mining is stumbling, with
Obama-era jobs retraining classes undersubscribed and future programs at
risk under President Donald Trump’s proposed 2018 budget.”

And the thing I hate about this guy is that without a trained (in something other than coal) workforce, no other industry wants to move to where they are. Also if if I were a blue state company owner, I’m not sure I’d feel comfortable shoving my people in a place where their ethnicity might make them a target or they get a ton of batshit resentment by unemployed people who refuse to pick up the skills that would make them employable by me but insist that they are totes better anyway.

    • Jesus tapdancing Christ… Know what the coal and oil workers down in my corner of the country learned to do?

Install solar arrays and wind farms. They now have more work and more job opportunities than ever before. And it doesn’t cost them their health or lives anymore.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

What made them different from this guy? It seems they have a much clearer vision of the future than he does, which is good for them. Solar is the wave of the future. If I ever get around to having a house or condo, I’m so putting in solar panels.

        • Well, what made them different is this is the U.S. southwest and not Bumfuck Appalachia. Also our coal is shittier (softer, burns dirtier) than that Appalacian anthracite, so when the market fell out, it died a lot faster…and it died during the Bush and Obama administrations.

There’s still some fracking going on, esp. near the Four Corners area (and that’s nasty), but the untapped reserves are rather more limited than in other locales.

Finally, unlike in GOPer states, we here in NM at least had a decent alternative energy tax rebate program, making the installation of such more affordable for all.

I’d say the big thing is they didn’t have a pustulent orange shitegoblin telling them coal jobs would come back when they most certainly wouldn’t. They weren’t blatantly lied to by a craven psychotic narcissist. Therefore the training programs were taken and put into use.

        • whollyfool

This guy believed someone who lied to him.

          Pretty sad.

        • Cackalaquiano

There are whole regions that are just lethargic, dominated by a mentality that is so inherently resistant to any change. Folks who’ve hardly ever left their holler and just want to remain and do the same thing they know for the rest of their lives. I have a good friend who grew up in a small town in West Virginia. A high school friend of hers went to university for something like Chemical Engineering. After graduation, she returned to her same town to manage the Dairy Queen. It’s where her family is, it’s their expectation, and it’s tough to change that.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

That is such a waste. I don’t see the point of going to college if she was going to do that anyway. I wouldn’t mind so much if they wouldn’t hate the people willing to adapt or blame them for their things they had nothing to do with.

      • Max_1
    • Gretchen

My husband works in manufacturing. He is a blue collar assembly line worker and has been with the same company for almost twenty years. It is a Japanese company with facilities all over the globe. Recently they announced that they plan to hire 1000 new workers for yet another plant in our town. For the last couple years, my husband has worked 28 days out of 30, and ten hour shifts are frequent. The salary and benefits are above average for this area, and still yet the company cannot hire and retain enough employees to meet the current production demands. It’s an excellent company, and they treat their employees well, but few are willing to work hard enough to continue there. Good jobs are available even with immigrants employed. The problem is that many white men (and women) are so accustomed to their privilege that they think even a earning a paycheck should be easier for them.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I hope your husband doesn’t burn out. That sounds grueling though am glad they are not short changing the pay.

I wish they would live up to the values they so frequently demand of others. Also, it sounds like they think standards would crash enough for them to have the job at the level they want to work if all the hard working folk went away without realizing the factory would just to move to where the hard working trainable people are.

I’ve done a variety of monotype techniques. Using a plexiglass plate that you paint on, as well as a frisket + multi-plates technique. Also, a combo technique of plexi-plate and collage using torn paper.

I’ll have to check that out though, it looks very interesting.

I don’t know how much printmaking I will do in the present but I’ve been wanting to build a bottle jack press for several years now, just as a self-contained project. It’s been a while’ but I sourced the materials at one point and think one could be built, depending on the jack’s PSI (6+ tons now recommended), for between $100-$200. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/52150acaa81c58fb01646c316248740cc1603775c751f17160363cf795e95f7c.jpg

For relief printing I preferred hand burnishing for most things since it gives you the ability to “draw” within the print using pressure, but if you want the consistent blocks of color desired for some projects a press sure helps.

    • My, that’s beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Almost makes me want to try and I have almost no artistic skills whatsoever.

      • Cuberly Deux

Monoprint is so much fun because it’s very much on the fly. Meaning you basically riff on pattern & color. It’s very free-form.

    • Treant

The techniques around 1:30 and onward with the chopstick and rakes are exactly what we do to create color patterns in soap!

In fact, I’ve made many of those tools myself.

Given the lack of depth, the only tool I use that she didn’t was a bent hanger to do a hanger swirl on the vertical axis, and the only technique I use that she doesn’t is the In The Pot swirl, where you do the color combination and then pour it as a unit to create depth, width, and length patterns simultaneously.

      • Cuberly Deux

I had a feeling you’d like that vid. lol….so many of the techniques in the vid seemed pretty ubiquitous to your soap making.

        • Treant

Yes, indeed! While I can’t easily match the colors–my base is an opaque white (or slightly green or slightly yellow) on most of what I do–the similarity of technique is amazing!

The only real difference is that I’m designing a product that will wear away over time, and should look interesting at every stage.

      • Cuberly Deux

…actually just realized you do this more on a three dimensional level.

(But then that’s what you said in your comment….sorry, tired….long day.)

        • Treant

It just means the same tools at a different angle; a hanger swirl tool is just a chopstick turned horizontal (we make them out of steel wire coat hangers) to swirl at a different angle. 🙂

          • Gustav2

Wire hangers! OMG, you have wire hangers!

lol, the hubby makes wreaths out of inexpensive Dollar Store bulbs strung on wire hangers. They make cheap, quick gifts, good for the office, etc.

We had to go back to the Dollar Store to BUY some wire hangers.

A few years ago I pulled a bunch of wild grape vines out of the trees here. I had a project in mind for them so I wrapped them into coils for easier storage. Eventually I gave up on the project, slapped some bows on the coils, and gave them away as holiday presents. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/63bf98cacbeb85ba34de8e6c9219fa8a14b20548a83925dead371a670d146701.jpg

          • Treant

I know, right? All my in-use ones are wide plastic. I had to go looking for one to turn into a hanger swirl tool.

And they have to be stainless steel or solid plastic. The lye will eat wood, some rubbers, and a lot of weaker plastics. The reaction with aluminum is downright explosive.

  • Reading the Rude Pundit’s posts cleanses my angry soul each day like a fine glass of wine…

In the official transcripts of the White House, they’re not even trying to hide what a gibbering twit President Donald Trump is. And, really, why bother? We all know that he’s an inarticulate tamarin, a calico dimwit, and for most of us, that means he’s just a cretinous ogre who should be in a field, devouring wayward goats, and not beshitting the Oval Office. For others, his moronic drivel is a feature, not a flaw; his third-grade vocabulary makes him like them. So, fuck it, just put it out there. Judgment has been rendered.

Still, this is pretty fucking dumb. Talking about the Uzebek immigrant who legally came to the United States a decade ago (during a Republican administration, it should be noted, and post-9/11), Trump gurgled, “I am today starting the process of terminating the diversary lottery program. I’m going to ask Congress to immediately initiate work to get rid of this program. Diversary and diversity lottery. Diversity lottery. Sounds nice. It’s not nice. It’s not good. It hasn’t been good.” You already know this, but “diversary” ain’t a word. And he said it twice. Because he’s a fucking moron. And everything that followed was fucking moronic.

Then, swear to fucking god, he said the phrase “get rid of chain migration” three times in less than a minute, and you know he couldn’t explain the concept if you held a Big Mac in front of him for a reward.

  • Kind of a on-topic ish? Thread. Not my best, but meh, thought I’d share if you care to click thru. In it, I talk about how in order to make an online community safe, you HAVE to spend enough money to maintain it. Which yeah, will eat into the profits.

What a whiner. [And grabber—and CRIMINAL.]

    • clay

So, it’s Executive Branch policy, soon to be practice, that sexual harassment claims should be grounds for dismissal, of the claimant? Wouldn’t be surprised, considering DeVos’ take on Title IX and the Violence Against Women Act.

If it prevents him from getting the death penalty, I (for one) am OK w/ that. ADX Florence will be the perfect penitentiary for him: a place to sit—the rest of his pathetic life—and think about what he’s done.*

      * “Innocent until proven guilty” though. Per always. That’s “Justitia”, as our BillBear would say…

It makes one stop for a second and look to see what year in the 1950’s or 60’s this article is from. There’s a long way to go in this country. 🙁

So they “consider” bringing charges on a felony that was done to subvert our democracy? Well that’s nice

      • gaycuckhubby

Yeah. The article is behind a paywall so I couldn’t read all of it.
Curious as to why they are only considering it.

        • BobSF_94117

Bringing legal charges against (presumably pretty high-ranking) officials of a foreign govt is a big deal. Any DOJ would move cautiously. This one, of course, would do so even more and not for justifiable reasons.

Are we depending on Keebler to do this? (Because I won’t hold my breath)

This latest is only a call for his bots to up their efforts to discredit Mueller. Won’t work on the majority of us who are paying attention.
