REPORT: Trump Nominee Sam Clovis Has Turned

Politico reports:

Sam Clovis, President Donald Trump’s controversial nominee to be the Agriculture Department’s chief scientist, has been “a fully cooperative witness” in the Senate Intelligence Committee’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, Senate Agriculture Chairman Pat Roberts told POLITICO.

Clovis, a former co-chair and policy adviser to Trump’s campaign, knew that another campaign adviser, George Papadopoulos, was talking to Russians, according to news reports based on documents released Monday as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.

Clovis’ nomination to the top scientific job at the Agriculture Department has already drawn significant opposition from Democrats and scientists who have raised concerns about his climate-change skepticism, his credentials and his history of making disparaging statements about blacks, women, LGBT individuals and others. But there’s been no public opposition from Republicans, and Roberts said he plans to continue with a planned Nov. 9 confirmation hearing.

RELATED: Among the many offensive and downright batshit claims made by Clovis is that same-sex marriage will inevitably lead to the legalization of pedophilia.

Is this the start of rats abandoning a sinking ship? Can we hope?

    • Todd20036

The ship has been sinking for some time.
But now the water has reached the lower decks, and the smart rats are making deals before it all goes under.

      • FAEN

        Yep!

      • Paula

I hope Mueller can put several more torpedoes in that ship soon.

    • Rambie

I hope it doesn’t completely sink until early in 2018, need the issue FRESH in voters minds to get as many of the GOP’ers out as possible!

      • FAEN

I don’t see that happening before the midterms. Speaking of them I hope to baby Jeebus the Dems aren’t relying solely on anti Cheeto sentiment to put them in charge of one chamber of Congress.

        • Joseph Miceli

Yes, because that worked so well before, I agree. Time for some fresh faces and some new voices.

        • Rambie

Agreed, the Dems need to work on their own platform and effective leadership to counter the Republicans

      • Joseph Miceli

I’m fat. I have NO problem fat shaming BAD people. Fuck them. They deserve whatever they get if they are colluding with Trump. I hope they make him squeal like a pig in jail, too.

Side note: Lard is actually not a particularly bad fat. In fact, it’s relatively comparable to olive oil in terms of polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats. It does have triple the saturated fats (new studies show they aren’t as bad as previously thought), but you also tend to use far less lard.

      • Boreal
        • Treant

Probably. It’s very filling, has great flavor in recipes, and makes a fantastic soap as well. 🙂

Although lately, I’m turning more to tallow. That’s heavier on the saturated fats, a little lighter on the monounsaturated, and near-zero on the polyunsaturated.

      • Adam King

        Makes the best pastry crust.

        • Treant

Damn straight. Vegetable shortening makes a crap crust. Lard is light, flaky, and flavorful.

        • Paula

We don’t use margarine at home. I don’t want to eat any substance that is just a couple of molecules away from being plastic.

          • djcoastermark

Calorie and fat content are similar, but yes, one is natural and has a “better” type of (real not fake) fat. Plus , butter tastes like , well, real butter so why not real instead of fake?

          • stuckinthewoods

In 1975 a doctoral physiology course I took examined trans fats. Even then they pronounced margarine dangerous so I haven’t used it since. Their conclusion was that natural fat was better and the culprit in heart disease might be artificial fat plus homocysteine, an amino acid metabolite of methionine with caustic effects. 40 years later it’s still being investigated but we’ve been using butter, o.o., lard, etc.

      • greenmanTN
      • stuckinthewoods

Now that it is recognized that trans fats are unhealthy, people tend to substitute butter thinking lard is worse for them. Turns out lard’s pig blubber is 60% monounsaturated which is mostly oleic, twice what cow butter has, and butter’s only 45% monounsaturated. Butter has 4x as much saturated fat. Here in the Peoples Republic pie crust is made with lard.

        • Treant

Or, why it makes absolutely amazing soap…and butter, made into soap, sucks. 🙂

We use a calculator that contains most oils’ and fats’ exact average fatty acid profile for soap making purposes: http://soapcalc.net/calc/SoapCalcWP.asp

(It’s faster than using a pen and paper, and auto-calculates characteristics…but mind those, they’re always terribly inaccurate and fats do differ even if the profiles are the same).

        • RoFaWh

The traditional consensus is that pie crust is best made from a 50-50 mixture of butter and lard.

  • Rex

  • Treant

What scares me is how strident this Administration is that, simply put, nothing is actually happening here. I wasn’t around for Nixon, but in today’s climate, it worries me.

And you know the Republicans will ignore treason just as long as they’re reasonably assured of being able to cheat their way back into their seats, and they’re getting their tax cuts.

    • bkmn

I have seen some suggest that once the big tax cuts are done the GOP will turn on Don the Con.

That’s not surprising given the Tea Idiots that stupid GOP voters have been sending to Congress for the past decade.

          • Treant

Hope springs eternal. 🙂 Between the last gasp of the reasonable slightly right to the Tea Party infighting, it just might end up being an awful deal for them!

      • Friday

    • AmeriCanadian

Yep. The ends justify the means, no matter how absurd.

    • MaryJOGrady

I was around for Nixon. There were honorable, sane Republicans in the Congress then. (It was a small group of respected Republican senators who went to Nixon to tell him that there were not the votes in the US Senate to prevent his impeachment. Nixon’s resignation swiftly followed.) Today’s situation is far more extreme and insane.

  • GayOldLady

Don’t get too excited about this folks, he’s cooperating with a Republican led Senate Committee. Not Mueller.

    • Boreal

True. Still it makes gives more credence to Mueller’s investigation.

      • GayOldLady

        If he’s cooperating with Mueller.

        • Boreal

I’ll bet he probably is and has been for a while.

          • GayOldLady

I hope you’re right. If you remember in past investigations there have been folks who avoided prosecution because they’d been given immunity for cooperating testimony before a Senate Committee. I don’t remember whether it was Watergate or Iran-Contra.

          • The_Wretched

It might have been both but I remeber being annoyed at how the Iran-Contra types were handed out immunity to prosecution like it was Halloween candy.

          • GayOldLady

I don’t remember all the details, but I do remember a Federal Judge decided that the immunity handed out by the Congressional investigative committee precluded the Special Prosecutor from indicting them.

          • J Ascher

Ollie North, in particular, should still be serving time for his role!

          • clay

Iran-Contra, but Mueller, at least, learned from that and the Dems on the committees would have to allow (or send out warnings) on any immunity promises. The GOP chairs basically gave up the authority to grant immunity when they agreed to play second fiddle to Mueller.

          • bzrd

I-C, Oliver North, “I’ve been vindicated!”
            no you weren’t, slime-bucket

I think though that there are Dems on that committee that if they see info of value would be sure to pass it along to Mueller, via proper channels, of course.

      • GayOldLady

Yep, there are Dems, but the GOP is doing everything in it’s power to protect Trump at this point. Until I know he’s cooperating with Mueller I won’t see this as a positive development.

        • Lazycrockett

      • GayOldLady

Used to be that you could be an honorable person and vote Republican. The young ones reading here won’t remember those days, GOL, but you and I do.

Those days are over. You cannot be “moderate” today and be a member of the party that shepherded Donald Trump to the White House.

Honorable people who hold traditionally Republican positions (small government, a strong military, etc.) must form a new party.

Here in Texas their are so many seniors who are extremely respectable but are staunch Repubs — church going, moderately wealthy, educated and upper middle class with good investments that maintain their lifestyle. The ladies still wear prim hats with veils and wear white gloves and the men still treasure their Stetsons – wool or beaver for winter and straw for summer. They are confused but just can’t understand or refuse to understand what the Republican Party has turned into because the Republican Party ( to them, at least ) is still the ‘Grand Old Party’ of their parents and grandparents. Oh they don’t care for Mr. Trump but they believe – truly believe that somehow it’ll all turn out for the best ,,, maybe not today, tomorrow or next week but sometime soon. Life goes on and it’ll soon be time to decorate the house for Christmas and the holidays. La-la-la.

I believe that the GOP led investigation is their exit plan. If Mueller comes up with enough to really go after Trump and his associates, they can start doing real things to show they’re being tough on one of their own (please don’t vote us out, we’re not like him). Or given the opportunity, they can use it to bury evidence and play it all as “see, we investigated but the claims were all fake”.

I don’t think it’s that his testimony will be earth shattering in and of itself. It’s more the point that *another* rat has deserted the ship. We’re one more closer to a mass exodus; we don’t know when that will happen, but it will.

Sam Clovis was George Papadapoulos’s campaign supervisor. Make of that what you will. I imagine Mueller will question Clovis under oath.

Dunno if I’ve told this story before…a co-worker was constantly repeating lines from this movie (mostly Bill Murray’s), one of his favorites (and now mine): But on you it looks good.

I finally saw the movie years later…it was funnier because I remembered my friend/co-worker spouting the lines. I use this one often. 🙂

Hollywood actors speak of ‘rampant’ problem of male abusers targeting men

    – Speaking out in the wake of an allegation of sexual harassment against Kevin Spacey, male actors say abuse against boys and young men is ‘taboo’ but ‘pervasive’

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/31/hollywood-male-abusers-boys-gay-men-kevin-spacey

    • Jeffrey

It’s about to be open season on gay men thanks to these dicks who abuse their power. We will all pay for it because morons can’t tell the difference between average Gay Joe and Kevin Spacey…or for that matter between Spacey who has one 30yr old allegation vs Weinstein who has 30 years and 100 allegations.

      • BobSF_94117

A lot of those folks who can’t tell the difference are around here.

        • Jeffrey

          Yes they are

      • Chucktech

or for that matter between Spacey who has one 30yr old allegation vs Weinstein who has 30 years and 100 allegations.

Thank you. Not to mention making christian dipshits sit up and perk.

        • Jeffrey

Exactly. And note how quick a gay man’s career is ruined. Woody Allen and Roman Polanski are still getting Oscar nominations. NOT defending Spacey’s actions, just pointing out the disparity in treatment.

    • another_steve

Sexual contact with people who aren’t capable of giving – or willing to give – informed consent is evil, period. Regardless of the age of the person, the gender of the person or the sexual orientation of the person. It’s called “rape.”

That said, I have some nagging doubts and suspicions re the current spate of high-level high-payoff sexual harassment/abuse cases. Particularly involving celebrities.

There’s a new cottage industry in town, folks: attorneys and others making big money out of alleged sexual abuse cases involving celebrity abusers.

Whenever and wherever there’s big money involved – anywhere – beware.

    • greenmanTN

Weinstein might have inadvertently done us a service because it seems that the dam is breaking about sexual harassment/abuse in entertainment, the media, business, and government. But it’s going to get REALLY ugly before this abscess is even close to drained. I’m sure there are a lot of people, men almost exclusively of course, who are really shitting their pants these days waiting for the axe to fall.

I forget the name of the company but the story about that ‘net media company that was basically a hunting ground for young male actors is equal parts fascinating and disgusting.

So far as I know this is the only content they ever produced, with Sean William Scott as every gay kid’s favorite creepy uncle.

About twenty years ago, I had a built-in vacuum installed in my house. Somewhat later, a Seattle friend was visiting and I showed it off to him. Somewhere along the line, I mentioned that new houses in Canada routinely have the ducting in place for a built-in vacuum (roughed in, iow). Friend’s response? “That just shows you that Canada is a more advanced society than the US.”

Maybe the US needs a couple of decades of fascist dictatorship to cure the rot?

If someone drew a cartoon character of a bigoted, greedy, crooked corporatist, it would look like Clovis.

  • Take this with a HUGE grain of salt. This is GOP Senator Roberts making the claim, not the FBI and not Mueller.

The carrot-and-stick cooperation secured by the FBI with respect to Papadopoulos is nothing like cooperating with a partisan-controlled Senate Intel committee. They don’t have anything like the resources it would take to know if Clovis is lying to them or not…and some of their members might well WANT to be lied to about what happened during Trump’s Treason-Express campaign.

O/T: ‘I want to quit’: Fox News employees say their network’s Russia coverage was ‘an embarrassment’

This is the best quote, in my opinion, from a Faux News employee who sincerely believes his/her network is capable of being fair and objective (LMFAO):

“It is another blow to journalists at Fox who come in every day wanting
to cover the news in a fair and objective way,” one senior Fox News
employee told CNN of their outlet’s coverage”

    • kaydenpat

Oh please. When has Fox News ever covered anything in an objective, fact-based manner? Shephard Smith is the one exception.

      • AmeriCanadian

Exactly and wouldn’t that be common knowledge among the employees there? I don’t think anyone lives under a rock these days.

Speaking of Trump’s proposal to reevaluate alliances including involvement with NATO, Clovis said, “We’re not about to spill one drop of blood or spend one more dollar unless we know exactly what the outcome is going to be or at least have some notion of what the predictability is.”

Trump’s America will only back an ally if there is a profit to be had from doing so, and only if America is guaranteed a quick “win”. So in the event there is trouble in the Baltic states.. the odds of success are slim considering the current order of battle, and the US army can be stood down simply on the threat of sanctions by Russia and/or China.

    OT?:
I was out this afternoon helping a very dear, fragile friend get some of his errands done.
I could not help but notice all the seniors out trying to find some value for their worked-hard for pension dollars.
I am talking the sustenance of food, not lap of luxury.
A very basic need for good health and deserved happiness.
Every store that might offer such had one glaring and contemptible line when it came time to pay the teller:
‘Do you have a points/club/membership card?’
If not, there were NO rewards. NO discounts. NO privileges.
    For basic food.
    How equal is that?

It is not just in America.
        Here in Canada too.
I have seen accounts of this, what shall I call it….oh right, “membership”, on web sites around the world.
        Democratic, free countries.
It is good for competition they say.
Remember, I am only refering to basic food at this point.
I have seen it told it is the leading scourge to bet on.
        It is happening everywhere.
Unless one shows the bling, one seems to equal nothing.
How is that for a transparent, open, and equal democracy?

Sam Clovis is an odd little duck who has been skulking around Iowa politics for years. Nobody out here takes him seriously. Trump has nominated him for a position in the Ag Department. Clovis has NO ag experience. I suppose that Trump’s thinking was (if there was any thinking at all!) that Sam is from Iowa so he must be an Ag expert, ’cause, you know, everybody in Iowa must be an Ag expert.
