Far-Right Extremists Plant NAMBLA Banner At Protest

Far-right activist Mike Cernovich, who has previously been busted on leaked text messages suggesting the planting of fake signs at student protests, last night gleefully tweeted out an image of an obviously planted NAMBLA banner at a protest at Columbia University.

Cernovich’s tweet was immediately promoted by fellow extremists Jack Posobiec and InfoWars nutter Paul Joseph Watson, much to the acclaim of their white nationalist followers. Others, however, immediately trashed the stunt as transparent fakery. InfoWars, of course, is reporting the banner as real.

I will admit that in its extreme infancy, queer rights movements didn’t do enough to banish groups that promoted or approved of pedastry. But we’ve come a long way, we’ve matured, we’ve grown up and we have sent these groups to the dustbin of history.

But the right wing will use any strawman they can.

  • JoeMyGod

Mike Cernovich first came to internet fame for his claims about virility of his “super sperm” and for declarations that date rape doesn’t exist. He was charged with rape in 2003 but the case was reduced to battery and he only did community service.

I’ve been active in the LGBT civil rights movement since 1990 and all of my information about NAMBLA has only come from the far-right.

    • gaycuckhubby

Yeah. By the 90s they were virtually nonexistant

          Those Marlon Brando Look-Alikes!

      • Duh-David

Had a friend throughout the early eighties who kept taking in homeless high-schoolers. He claimed it was all above board, but he was constantly trying to get in touch with NAMBLA so he could start a chapter. I think beyond a couple of mimeographed newsletters, he never was able to find proof they exist and make contact.

I was, and am, convinced that NAMBLA was never more than one man with a mimeo machine trying to find others to justify his depravity. No table at Pride or IML, no ads in the newspapers and magazines. No bumper stickers. No flyer on the cork board at the Center. Just whispers in the community about a boogie man who never existed.

        • In the early/mid-80’s there was a purported nambla manifesto circulating around the community, but there were a bunch of crazy pamphlets floating around back then. So it was impossible to tell what was actually produced by someone in the community – unless you personally knew the author.

        • Friday

Someone did come sniffing around some campus LGBT events where I was some time around 1990 claiming to represent them and wanting to chain on to LGBT rights, no sale, of course, …he got run off pretty quick, but reality of course never mattered to the Right. That organization was basically really over once the head/s of it got busted for something, not long after, but the Right cheerfully claimed Obama was beholden to ACORN long after *that* had been disbanded by that Christian Right ‘baby parts’ scam, etc.

        • Do Something Nice

They marched in a pride parade in SF in the early 1980s – and I think they sued to do so. Along the parade route, they were pelted with insults, tomatoes and whatever else and they never came back.

          • Todd20036

They marched in the NYC parade in the early 90s. Not much else since.

          • gaycuckhubby

So according to the comments above… at least once in the 70s, at least once in the 80s, at least once in the 90s

          • Todd20036

Yeah. And they didn’t call themselves pedos. They claimed that there should be no age requirement to sex.

        • They were allowed to march in one of the very early pride parades (around 1971 or so) and not since. That should never have happened but it hasn’t happened again in 45 years. The religious right will reference it forever though.

          • Kissmagrits

Anita Bryant’s rallying cry in the 1977 Dade county ordinance flap was “Save the Children”…and the Christian right is still getting a lot of mileage out of it. It just proves the most
effective anti-LGBT boogie man is the man in the raincoat with his bag of candy.

        • Goodboy

Their official website is down as of now. I find it interesting that they name the gay rights pioneer Harry Hay and a Priest named Paul Shanley as their founder.

          • gaycuckhubby

Harry Hay was problematic and certainly wouldn’t be allowed to be a leader today.

          • Goodboy

Wow. They’ve actually got a plaque in honor of him in West hollywood too.

          • gaycuckhubby

He would be horrified if he saw what we have become. Lol

          • gaycuckhubby

Well, it is statue removal season!

          • Lawrence Esser

Harry Hay sure was problematic: He had real guts in a time when just having a political meeting to work for gay rights could get you arrested. He also had the guts to support NAMBLA’s right to campaign to change grotesque sex laws that were squarely aimed at gay men. NAMBLA may no longer exist, but its reason for being formed–to challenge laws that could be and were used to put gay men in jail–was legal and constitutional.

          • gaycuckhubby

            Ok

          • Smokey

Paul Shanley was one of the problematic priests at the center of the abuse crisis in Boston.

          • MaryJOGrady

        • Gerry Fisher

They were present at Boston’s LGBT Pride parades in the mid-80s. I started going to Pride in ’83. Super small contingents.

          • Ogre Magi

The way you are all talking makes them sound like cryptozoological specimens (like Bigfoot or Nessie)

      • Ninja0980

Yup, because contrary to what the bigots claim, the LGBT community doesn’t support groups that think it’s okay to have sexual relationships with kids still in elementary/middle school.

    • I was thinking the exact same thing. Do they even still exist? I’m not going to go searching for info because I don’t want that shit on my browser history.

    • Gerry Fisher

I remember seeing super, super small NAMBLA contingents in LGBT Pride parades in Boston during the mid-80s. I don’t recall seeing them as an active, tolerated member of our community in the past 20+ years.

    Has NAMBLA ever really existed?

    • Gregory In Seattle

Yes, briefly in the 70s. It was quickly infiltrated by law enforcement, which drove the actual members away. Since the mid 80s, it has existed mainly as a police front to try and catch really stupid people, and as a justification by the Religious Right to bash LGBT people.

      • Lizard

Pedophiles don’t need those groups anymore with the advent of anonymous online communication.

        • Gregory In Seattle

The abandonment of NAMBLA by pedophiles predates the internet era by more than a decade. But yes, it’s original purpose as an advocacy group and to connect people is long out of date.

      • ^ This.

    • Halou

Founded in 1976 NAMBLA attempted to piggyback off the LGBT rights movement, until 1994 when the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) formally expelled them and broke all ties.

Ironically the pedophile group was 18 years old when they were dismissed.

      • gaycuckhubby

        Crazy it took that long

        • Friday

If I recall they claimed to represent somewhat more-palatable positions, officially, like parity for ages of consent compared to straight people, (which in many ways *does* make sense, since you’d sometimes see kids in teen romances charged with statutory-raping each other) …Denied being for pedophilia, etc, though of course that group got a lot of flak for dealing with them even before they got really exposd and shut down.

          • Halou

Like the 2013 story of two Florida teenagers (15 and 17) who entered into a relationship together, and the moment one of them turned 18 somebody else reported them to the police, saying an adult was having sex with a minor, and forget the difference between the two was just over two years.

A relationship forced to end and a young woman forced to register as a sex offender, severely limiting their prospects for the future… All because someone else at the school was full of shit, and the younger girl’s parents thought the older girl had turned her into a lesbian.

          • Friday

Well, that’s still going on, actually, but in some cases age of consent laws can mean that they could treat two kids in a teen romance with ‘raping’ each other if they were gay. Even in states where they had very low ages of consent for girls subjected to straight things.

      • gaycuckhubby
