Junior Goes On “Peasant” Hunt With Steve King

Mediaite reports:

First-son Donald Trump Jr. went on a so-called “peasant hunt” with highly controversial alt-right politician Rep. Steve King of Iowa. While it seems the two actually went pheasant hunting and did not in-fact hunt down plebeians, the GOP congressman did accidentally tweet a photo of the two posing with firearms captioned: “Steve King’s annual Bud Day Peasant Hunt. ‘If Donald Trump Jr. defends 2nd Amendment as well as he shoots, we have nothing to worry about.’”

Says one of the people who were chosen to tie little boxes to their head… 😉

        • another_steve

You are, of course, referring there to tefillin (also called phylacteries) – small black leather boxes containing scrolls of parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah. Worn by male observant Jews during weekday morning prayers.

As a young man, I was very gifted in Judaic studies. My rabbi at the time told my mother that I was destined for greatness.

          And then I discovered cock.

          • OdieDenCO

always thought those little boxes functioned like bumpers just in case you got to close to the wall while doing that rocking while praying thing.
            (ducks and runs)

          • another_steve

The rocking is part of “davening” – prayer recitations and Jewish meditation traditions. You’ll see men doing it in Orthodox Jewish synagogues.

Non-orthodox but observant Jews (Reform, Reconstructionist, etc. – male and female) sometimes engage in the rocking, too.

It’s very old, very ancient – and some engage in the practice to preserve the tradition.

          • clay

Yeah, I also do it, but most people think I’m disturbed.

        • another_steve

Eric is photo-dependent. There are guys like that.

A photo taken by a skilled photographer will reveal him to be not-so-bad.

          • Dazzer

How many tons of Vaseline does the skilled photographer have to use on the lens?

          • another_steve

True. A skilled photographer can perform wonders.

Annie Leibovitz could exhume my mother – dead 11 years now – prop her against a wall and take a photo of her that would make the cover of any glamour mag.

    • PirouettePecker
    • I once witnessed (but did not participate in) a caged pheasant “hunt.” My dad was in it.

It was pathetic. Even my dad thought it was the lamest thing he’d ever done as a hunter. He bagged two birds and for once, they literally tasted exactly like chicken. Because unlike game birds, they’d been fed exactly what chickens eat.

      We never went again.

      • Cuberly Deux

My brother goes bowhunting every year, he and a group of friends backpack into a remote area and they make quite an adventure out of it. The skill, determination and technical aspects of the entire endeavor are actually quite fascinating, which is why they do it. The hunt is the experience, not just penning some poor thing and blowing it’s brains out.

        • EXACTLY.

          Hence also my dad’s credo:
          – 1 shot to down a deer = Perfect
          – 2 shots = Mistake
          – 3 shots = Failure
          – More than 3 = Give up hunting, you’re obviously complete shit at it

I’ve got nothing but extreme respect for those who bow-hunt. THAT is a challenge.

          • Cuberly Deux

Yep, that’s the credo. And yeah, bowhunting is on a totally unique level. No way I’d have the skill for that. But he’s picture perfect for it.

I hope he gets an elk this year, I’ve been hankering for some elk chili for a long time….and jerky.

          • billbear1961

No, I’m sorry–I would have thought this until I read, recently, that the animals are often NOT killed and run off to suffer and die slow, miserable deaths from the arrow wounds (which, of course, become infected), the arrows often still in their bodies.

If there is any truth to this, if it even happens only sometimes, it is inexcusable.

          • Adam King

All the jokes along those lines that I can come up with are either too hard or too easy, so I’ve just given up.

          • (((GC)))

In some contexts one can be quite hard and quite easy!

I can only hope the next contract is better. That said, if I was young and in PR, I’d move to the mainland.

      • djcoastermark

That is pretty much what’s happening. There was a good article in the local paper here today about PR facing a true generation gap.
The article focused on a town called Media Luna where the youngest person still there trying to help elders clean up and try to rebuild is 60 years old. The younger population had all left for Florida.

    • billbear1961

NOW, find out who was behind this blatant, stinking CORRUPTION, and put the SCREWS to them.

      • safari

Except everyone is shouting “not it”.

      • Zinke’s home town. A place with something like 5k residents total.

I think the investigation, if it happens, will be a very short one.

        • PirouettePecker

Whitefish, MT. Both my parents were born and raised there and I still have relatives there. Small railroad town, rather tough when I was a kid and spent summers there.

Has turned into an expensive, Aspen CO type place now. Even the local bar (one of many) that my grandfather got thrown through a window in a brawl now has ‘cafe-style’ seating out front and serves she-she dishes.

Many of the older ‘local’ families sold for a good price and moved nearby in the valley.
          http://andreeabolbea.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/downtown_whitefish_montana.jpg

          • Place looks gorgeous.

          • PirouettePecker

Always has been yes. Most of the Flathead Valley is, really. And a short drive to Glacier Park. My great-uncle was head Park Ranger there for many years. Got some wonderful ‘backstage’ tours, etc.

          • TuuxKabin

Was a gorgeous ride thru Glacier Park, late afternoon, early evening on the Empire Builder mid August. The blue of the mountain water, from the minerals that leach out of the stone, something to do with glacier movement or something? Beautiful.

          • PirouettePecker

Then you probably stopped briefly to take on supplies and passengers at the Whitefish Great Northern RR station. Is on the national register. My grandfather worked out of there as fleet manager.

          • UrsusArctos 🐻

AH, another railroad family. My grandfather and his 2 brothers were road supervisors for the B&O across all 3 sections in Indiana. (East to West). It’s easy to love trains if you get to see them up close as a kid and learn some of the history and work it took to make the systems work.

          • pj

my grandfather was a yardmaster for the C&O in indiana.

          • UrsusArctos 🐻

            Small world ;D

          • ColdCountry

My great great great grandfather laid out a lot of the Illinois Central, does that make me part of a railroad family?

          • TuuxKabin

Yep. Recognize that! Two youngun’s, good looking Iowa corn fed, got on in St. Paul, on their way to Glacier to go hiking. On their honeymoon. Gave me hope. The people we met on the train and shared breakfast, lunch and dinner, different table mates at every meal. Each and everyone of them the kind of person I wouldn’t mind staying in touch with. At that stop, at that lodge looking building, made me want to do the trip again and stop there.

And the train(s) were packed the entire round trip. Gold star service from the crew, food was GOOD, a bit too ferocious meat eating, but what the hell.

Gorgeous on the southern route as well, the California Zephyr across Sierra Nevada, down, into Nevada, Utah, Colorado was a scenic high light.

Even some of the ND hills, west bound, reminded me of North SF Bay Area oak covered hills and meadows.

Lovely country we have. Hope we can keep it from the developer and exploiters. Sigh.

          • TuuxKabin

2guys just mentioned to me, Railroad workers, people with jobs railroad related all received Social Security numbers beginning with the number 7. Railway Express, hotels, paper mills and dock workers in Norfolk, Va were all, indirectly, railroad workers. He worked with Social Security. Can tell ya’ what part of the country you’re from by your SS number. It’s randomized now. Do you happen to know if your grandfather’s SS began with a #7?

          • PirouettePecker

Unsure, but he (and my other grandfather) both received RR retirement benefits in place of SS.

          • TuuxKabin

Exactly. Don’t know story behind that, but they were. Apparently Railroad Pension system came before SS.

          • TCinBerkeley

Used to leave from here to take the train to the Twin Cities to visit my dad’s parents. It was these trips that made me love trains. Much better than the “milk run” on Northwest (Northworst even back then in the 70’s) from Missoula to Minneapolis.

          • PirouettePecker

My maternal grandmother was born up in the park….out in the ‘wilderness’ and lived there until she married at age 13. No highways at that time…they hiked up the side of the mountain to catch the train (another place you probably passed right by on the Empire Builder called Fielding). We used to go out there on picnics and fish in the river.

          • PirouettePecker

edit: very close to the continental divide.

          • TuuxKabin

Fielding sounds familiar. I kept each schedule from the Lakeshore Limited, to the Empire Builder, to the Coastal Daylight, California Zephyr and Lakeshore Limited back.

I’ll take a look. We were in the dining car, a long two hour dinner with a granddad and grandson who were going hiking and getting off in the park. Probably one of my favorite memories of the year. Them, and the setting.

In Minot, SD a kid, well, 21 year old, joined us at our table, dressed in a dinosaur costume, from head to toe, like ‘jammies.’ On his way to Portland, same as us, to get out into the wilderness for the total eclipse. I could hardly eat from laughing at him and his dinosaur drag, the reactions of the crew and dining room passengers. Such a sweetheart as well.

That para of the country is spectacular, what great moments and memories you must have! I’ll certainly remember going thru the park. The river out the window. The mountains. Big Sigh Country.

          • PirouettePecker

First time I was in the Dining Car (that I remember) of the GNRR Empire builder…must have been about 4 or 5. Crisp white linens on all the tables; silver-plated utensils and sugar/creamers (all embossed with the RR logo). First time I ever saw a black person up close. Back then, all the porters and wait staff were black, from what I understand. In the diner, I thought they were so elegant in their white uniforms and some had such odd accents (southern) to my ears as a kid.

          • TuuxKabin

Lakeshore Ltd. Both directions still all African-American, maybe a city thing. Fun roomette attendant from Ecuador. When we boarded eastbound in Cal the attendant greeted us by name. Great service! Her car/coach was like a tea salon the way she set things up, extra added treats & fresh flowers. Good care.

          • PirouettePecker

Doubtful Fielding would appear….is just a little section house with a sign.

          • TuuxKabin

Oh those appear. Every stop no matter for 2 minutes. I kept timing the schedule, being a previous scheduler, router for cruise company.

          • Joe in PA

I remember that. How cool. A friend has an AirStream trailer …he spends the summer in Glacier (and environs). He shares the 16′ trailer with two medium sized dogs. Yikes. An interesting nomadic life. But he posts some spectacular pictures.

          • TuuxKabin

Ideal set up to us! Air Stream’s are so sleek. Saw a caravan of about 12 or so headed east along the train on I-80 going over the Sierra Nevada. Great wandering spirits.

          • Grumpy Old Man

In 1971, I was up there and took a lumberjack class; we learned to take down trees with Stihl 36″ chain saws. One of the tricks I learned was to pick up the saw and drop it while holding the pull – important hint, spin in the direction of the saw cuz in those days when the saw started so did the chain and you really don’t want to chance cutting your leg off. I really hated bending over to pull the starter cord. Never really did a lot of ‘felling’ but we partied pretty hard.

And the press and the Democrats are content to just let this go on and on, which it why it WILL go on and on, and get WORSE.

The Republic is riddled with unbelievable corruption; yes, some of the most blatant examples are exposed, FOR THE TIME BEING, but the culprits get off without punishment, which will only encourage MORE OF THE SAME.

Soon their schemes will succeed. (I’m sure some already ARE succeeding: industry now controls the EPA, for example.)

        • billbear1961

I don’t mention the GOP, of course, because THEY are the SOURCE of the corruption.

But the MSM and the Democrats, whom the Defiler and his party DEMONIZE, continue to PRETEND the GOP is a respectable party, not a criminal syndicate out to DESTROY good government and fatally undermine the Rule of LAW.

At what point do TRUE citizens who LOVE the Republic REFUSE to recognize the BOGUS “authority” of GANGSTER government?

    • Glad to hear it. There’s no fucking way a 2yo company with exactly two full-time employees (owners, really), operating out of a goddamned residential house in rural Montana—a house that was for sale until September—had anything like the expertise, experience, staff or resources to take on a no-bid $300m emergency power grid rebuilding project.

Two guys who just happened to have donated to the Trump campaign though is just enough for utter corruption, graft, grift, and kleptocratic plundering. Hence why they deliberately included “no audits or examination” in their ridiculous contract terms.

      • safari

That should be a red flag for any type of government contract. Hell, any contract.

        • Nowhereman

The person who would sign a contract like that should never sign another contract without running it by a lawyer first.

      • meltedrubbersoul

At the Shelbyville rally, one of the guys on the white nationalists’ side spoke through the megaphone, pleading with us that Trump was going to save us from opiate abuse, and that he was “draining the swamp” of corruption. This is exhibit 9,876,421 as to why that is not the case.

I’ve actually enjoyed my time in Tennessee, and really do like a lot of the people I’ve met. But leaving the liberal Asheville bubble has been an eye opener. One of my co-workers has claimed that he prefers Trump because the guy doesn’t have a hidden agenda. I agree with him actually: it is plainly obvious that Trump is going to fuck this country over.

      • Robincho

But Zinke, WHO JUST HAPPENS to hail from that bullshit Montana town, has NO idea how this interesting coincidence might ever have possibly taken place?…

        • David Walker

So I may assume, then, that you’ve decided not to take up that offer from the Whitefish Philharmonic?

      • Nowhereman

And they were charging outrageous amounts–like $90 a day per person for food. I don’t spend that much on food in 2 weeks.

    • boobert

    • bkmn

That’s a good thing but you can count on Whitefish Energy will be suing for them cancelling the contract and with a good lawyer can get a nice chunk of money for it.

    • Nowhereman

I hear that they rot from the head.

The socks I ordered Wednesday? Arrived yesterday.

    • It’s precisely because of Florida.

I have business-level acc’ts with both FedEx and UPS and both of them have said that shipments anywhere near FL, TX and/or CA can experience delays due to hurricane or wildfire damage. I use that to gauge expected USPS performance.

      • Treant

My money is on Manfort for this one.

          • Lazycrockett

MSNBC seems to be angling some mid level person no one has heard of that will easily turn. Schiff said that Flynn, Manafort level would be big fish and first round usually is small fish. Also he said that if it is Flynn or Manafort the Drumpf is in a shitload of trouble.

          • Why I think it’s Flynn:
            – Indictment from DC grand jury (handles crimes committed IN the District)
            – No question Flynn lied on his clearance & financial disclosure forms, both felonies
            – No question Flynn lied to investigators when questioned about his meetings w/Russians
            – No question Flynn failed to register under FARA as required by law
            – No question Flynn also lied about receiving money from multiple foreign sources
            – Highly likely he received money from sanctioned sources
            – Asked for but was rejected on his request for blanket immunity last spring
            – Donald’s panic level much higher than I would expect if it was a no-name person or even Manafort, which he and his people keep claiming was only like a brief ‘volunteer.’

          • Johnny Wyeknot

            Very nice support.

          • billbear1961

I go back and forth btwn Manafort & Flynn, maybe both.

          • There’ve been reports and speculation (mostly the latter) that it’ll be more than one person arrested.

If I go with assuming multiple indictees, I can’t exclude Manafort, potentially some others. I still wonder what was up with Roger Stone’s epic twitter meltdown on Friday, for example.

Why don’t the JMG women on this blog post semi-pornographic images of women? I mean, really. Why?

Women reading here: You are 100 percent entitled to your lusts.

Do not allow this male-dominated blog to constrain you.

Yup, any guys that can’t stand the sight of female nudity, aren’t too much of an adult. I’m queer as $3 bill, but can appreciate beauty no matter the gender.
OK! I confess! I have some of the same attitudes of an 11 years old.

Hubby & neighbours less so … lol. 😉

For me it was a pity, for sure. My music teacher told me I had “the lip” for the flute. Much of the mastery of that instrument is in the lip.

All things in life come too early. Education comes too early. We in our dotage love learning. In our teens and 20s, not so much.

The flute came too early to me.

That’s the best answer I can give.

        • Because our eroticism tends to be more cerebral than visual and always has been.

          • another_steve

            Excellent, Becca.

Male sexuality and female sexuality are not the same thing. We males are, on the average, much more visually-oriented. My sense is that it’s more complicated – more subtle – for women.

Wrong to overly generalize in this area – but generally, I think that’s the way it is.

I’m thinking this will be a very obvious indictment of Manafort for something that was rather easy to discover.

      • another_steve

Manafort is certainly on everyone’s list of possibles.

I think these indictments are going to be a slow start and pretty far from the stink in the oval office. Mueller’s going to creep closer and closer before he pounces. He may want to get a conviction or a plea deal or two along the way, so that when he prepares a report the House Republicans can’t flat out deny criminal wrongdoing.

    • PirouettePecker

Feet up; cocktail in hand time!

    • greenmanTN

Mmmmm. Sounds good. Me: reheating some frozen red beans and making rice.

Trivia: Red Beans and Rice was started at a New Orleans boarding school. Many students went home for the weekend and when they came back on Sunday evening the cooks would make a cheap and easy dinner that could be kept warm for hours as people drifted in, red beans and rice.

PS: You’re rubbing it in about the dishes. I like to cook but HATE doing dishes. Here is one of my great invention ideas. A tiny galley kitchen with magnetized walls the pots and pans stick to. You close the door and turn it on- the entire room is a dishwasher!

      • UrsusArctos 🐻

Another apocryphal red beans & rice story is that it originated as a “Monday” meal because washing and major chores were normally done on Monday. If the fires were already going for boiling clothes, red beans & rice were almost a no brainer. So a LOT of places in the city do red beans & rice specials on Monday.

I’m about to head to the kitchen to put some on for tomorrow. They’re a near perfect “crockpot” food.

      • kareemachan

I cook, my SO cleans dishes. GREAT division of labor, IMHO.

    • kareemachan

Mail it to me so I don’t have to do anything. It all sounds GREAT! Interestingly enough, I just bought more red lentils for soup next week.

We’re having fish tacos for dinner, as we are lucky enough to have a fishing boat show up at the local dock about 4 times a year. Local salmon, cod, smoked salmon, spotted shrimp, and halibut. YUM!

  • Maybe they intend to give the pheasants they shoot to a charity that feeds peasants? You know, like charity? Being like super rich and all, I’m sure they are constantly thinking of the poor. So “peasant hunt” was just a Freudian slip. You know, like me calling the Trumps rich, entitled assholes.

We live in rural Maryland and have lots of visiting raccoons here. They come primarily at night to empty the bird feeders, but they’re very curious and like to peek in at us through the patio doors.

You don’t want to mess with them; they’re wild animals and have very sharp claws — but they’re oh-so-wonderful critters.

    • Blake J Butler

I am tolerant of a lot of things, except republicans, green party purists, and raccoons.

Especially when one of them jumps out of a storage box and tries to attack you. With my dogs saving me from getting bit by one.

A little guy kept eating the dogfood put outside for the dogs to eat, then we left it in a storage box, then they figured out how to open the box, so i put brick pavers on the box when i left.

Then i found one night that the pavers were still on top of the box, but the pavers were pushed all the way to the back of the away from lip of the door, i heard kicking in the box, i opened it, and i get brushed by the tail of one of them, my dogs scared him away.

Long story short i abhor raccoons, along with other things.

      • We’ve killed a grand total of 62 gophers and 2 rattlesnakes here this year.

If I’d a chance, I would have gladly shot the rock squirrel who kept raiding our tomatoes all summer. Luckily, no prairie dogs lately and the rabbit numbers are way down, mostly due to a good local population of coyotes, ravens, owls and red-tail hawks.

        • djcoastermark

Sounds like you cut your grocery bill in half, just by shopping the backyard.

          • LOL Sorry, no. Gophers around here are small Bottas Gophers, which are basically the size of rats. Even kind of look like rats. We have to kill them because otherwise they undermine everything with their tunnels and mounds.

We use a product called “Cinch Trap” which kills them pretty instantly. Clear the mound, find the tunnel, set the trap and depend on their natural instinct to try to close up the opened tunnel because otherwise bull snakes get in.

The infestation usually starts around March or April and continues until hard freezes, which is around now. Then they hibernate until the next year. They usually have two litters a year, hence why so many.

I have the exact number on how many we took out because this year I began an “Into The Borderlands”-style tally count on my home office whiteboard. Just two more and I’d have a fully 8x tally of 8 each.

We don’t eat ’em, but within 24-48 hours, some passing coyote or raven absolutely will.

        • Gustav2

We stopped even trying to grow tomatoes, we would have four plants and do well to get four tomatoes from each plant because of the squirrels.

The first rules of cats is that all cats are psychopaths.

    • greenmanTN

When I moved from TX to TN I drove a rental truck. I had my cat on a harness and leash the whole way so he didn’t escape at a rest stop or wherever. When I got to TN I walked him around the property where we would be living so he would be familiar with it.

Everything was fine, no problems, but suddenly he sensed or smelled something and flipped the fuck out!!! Screeching, cartwheels, mad dashes to get away… One minute it was a leisurely walk, the next it was like flying a kite in a storm!

      • Bomer

When I moved from TX back to AZ last year I had three cats in the rental truck cab with me. Had to let them out of the carrier (was a large dog carrier) in Vanhorn so they would shut up. Two spent the trip sleeping under the seats and one spent the trip trying to sleep across my shoulders. They were really good about it; I could leave the windows down and get out of the truck and they would just curl up on the floor boards and not move until I got back in.

        • greenmanTN

Mine was good too, stayed under the seat pretty much the whole time, but I just *knew* the instant I opened the door he’d escape. Nope. Didn’t even try.

        • Gretchen

When I was in college, my mother gave me a feral kitten, and I imprisoned him with my love for 15 years. In the early years Slick would get shunted to my mother’s house for a few days at a time if I went out of town for anything. I drove a hatchback, 4-door Ford Escort (because of course I did), and he would make the 45 minute drive while sunning himself in the back window. Oddly enough he liked riding in the car. People would point and shout at me from their cars about my huge (22 lb) orange tabby in the window.

She’s right you know, despite the folks in the comment section claiming otherwise.

    • Let’s face facts: If you are not:
      – White
      – Male
      – Straight (or pretend to be)
      – Republican
      – Nazi/fascist
      – Wealthy
      – Fundamentalist Christian

…you are under attack by this Administration, its DoJ, and the Republican party.

      • Ninja0980

Yup, and in some cases folks on the left (nearly all white and male) who think women speaking up about sexual harassment, LGBT worried about their rights or blacks talking about racism that still exists.
        Makes you sick.

        • SoCalGal20

No identity politics!!! (Say the Betnie Bernie bros)

          • safari

I find it hilarious that people want to talk about equal rights but without using the language to do so.

          • SoCalGal20

Well Bernie doesn’t want to talk about equal rights. He wants to talk about economic inequality and economic anxiety of poor whites. Without talking about systemic racism and other reasons economic inequality exists.

          • robindaybird

Especially given he blew off every LGBT group that wanted to meet with him, and no-show the ones he did arrange a meeting with.

This is the transcript of my coming out to my best friend in High School. I was driving and she was in the passenger seat.

Me: I think I’m in love.

        Her: Who’s the lucky chick?

        Me: It’s a guy.

Her: *a few seconds delay* Oh, well then who’s the lucky Chuck?

That was it. But then I had known I was gay for quite a while and wasn’t going to have friends who were homophobic, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected. FWIW, she is black, and I should have taken her to the prom instead of the “little Catholic girl” who I asked because I thought Catholic girls were innocent and wouldn’t pressure me for sex. YIKES! Beware Catholic girls and their little cat-rough tongues!

    • another_steve

Brian Williams is lucky to still have a TV journalism career. People reading here who don’t know what that’s about, google him.

Imo, Joy Reid and Lawrence O’Donnell are the two primary reasons for watching MSNBC these days.

    • Lazycrockett

That is how you shut em down.

      • another_steve

        Joy Reid is amazing.

        I love her.

    • MikeBx2

Not to take anything away from Joy, but there’s no reason why every journalist, interviewer, host or whatever doesn’t force guests to stick to the facts. It shouldn’t be so astonishing when this happens. But good for Joy Reid. Couldn’t respect her more.

      • boatboy_srq

To get to Reid’s league, journalists have to get past outfits like iHeartMedia. In case anyone forgot, iHeart radio carries:

News talk stations owned by iHeartMedia usually have a standard slate of hosts. The morning show is usually local, with other timeslots filled by local and syndicated hosts. Programs that appear on many iHeartMedia talk stations include the Glenn Beck Program (Beck having gotten his talk show start at iHeartMedia (then Clear Channel) owned WFLA (AM) in Tampa), The Rush Limbaugh Show, The Sean Hannity Show, America Now with Meghan McCain and Coast to Coast AM with George Noory, all of which are affiliated with Premiere Radio Networks in some fashion. The Mark Levin Show and The Dave Ramsey Show are non-Premiere shows who air on many (if not most) iHeartMedia stations, as did The Savage Nation prior to its ending in September 2012. Limbaugh is almost universally carried on iHeartMedia stations in markets where the company has a news talk station, including recently New York City: WOR was acquired in 2013 by Clear Channel and began carrying Limbaugh’s program in 2014 following a long relationship with now-Cumulus Media-owned WABC. In markets where iHeartMedia-owned news talk stations have not been profitable (such as Boston and Atlanta), iHeartMedia has chosen to sell shows such as Limbaugh and Coast to Coast AM to their rivals and change the stations to other formats.

Not to say that there aren’t good journalists doing good work; but anyone inclined to actually report facts has a lot of obstacles in the outlets below the big TV broadcasters and the big papers, and those obstacle organisations are busy churning out more Becks, Hannitys, and Limbaughs. What’s needed is another breakup of monopolies in broadcasting – and you know BLEEPing well that this Congress and this PeeOTUS will never entertain that.

    • We only rarely see this level of mendacity smack-down because (1) Joy Reid is one in a million and (2) women of color have to try much harder just to approach equal opportunity.

    • safari

A journalist. With documents in front of her. Stating facts. And questioning an “expert”. Amazing.

I may go to hell for saying so, but I have a thing for Boehner and those evil blue eyes.

    • MikeBx2

It’s a terrible allegation and I believe truthful. I’m glad he spoke out. Betting there are others.

      • gaycuckhubby

        I’m proud of Rapp.
My guess is this starts an avalanche

    • safari

In the dawn of the late 90s, as I was a wee gayling, the coming out articles I read mentioned a number of things. A common theme was: don’t bring up Rosie O’Donnell or Kevin Spacey.

    • gaycuckhubby

What sucks is that most of the media attention will be on his sexual orientation rather than his (alleged) predatory behavior

      • safari

But everyone knows he’s a chicken hawk. I mean. I don’t even follow celebrity gossip and I’ve heard of his eastern european trists.

        • gaycuckhubby

Yeah. These allegations go beyond an affinity for legal twinks

    • boobert

I know it’s NYC and they’re “actors” , but what was a 14 yo boy doing partying with spacy at Limelight?

      • gaycuckhubby

I thought he was watching TV alone in a bedroom at a house party?
        I’ll go back and reread

        • boobert

Even that, if your the only kid at a house party, why wouldn’t you just leave rather than go in a bedroom to watch tv? I’m not for sex with minors, but your sending some mixed signals.

          • safari

When I 23 my landlady wanted to watch Rocky Horror in bed with her and her boyfriend. Things get weird at times.

          • boobert

Oh , I got plenty of those 18 to 22 stories , lol. A girl in the next apartment had a sex party where her old sugar daddy would pay to watch all her friends have sex. I went , just to see if it was real, but left without a handful of twenties.

          • safari

My grandfather died while I was out in the LA area. When I came back she had carefully cleaned my bedroom in her house — lining up all my mostly empty poppers bottles along the side of my bed.

          • boobert

Being young was never dull. I left the midwest at 20 and lived on my own in Philly ! I once had a doctor tell me to take off everything and lay on my back with my legs up. I thought it was strange, but had never been to a proctologist . I’m leaving out some of the dirty parts, but when he started taking off his clothes I got up and left. lol

          • gaycuckhubby

I don’t think he was the only kid.

Sorry memory isn’t that great but he made these allegations years ago to The Advocate. He just didn’t use Spaceys name. He said “that award winning actor” both he and the interview knew it was Spacey.

It was a party for multiple broadway shows. I doubt he was the only child actor

          • -M-

Only one at Spacey’s party apparently, but not unusual to him as a child actor on broadway to be the only person his age at a gathering.

          • Gretchen

I don’t care if the kid offered to blow him in the middle of the party. Kids don’t send signals mixed or otherwise. Adults have the responsibility to set the boundaries and never cross them. The adult is always responsible for his own behavior.

        • -M-

Seems the party where the pass was made was their third meeting. Taking a couple of kids to the Limelight sounds like grooming them for exploitation to me.

          • gaycuckhubby

And they were all in the same theater community. I find it hard to believe he wouldn’t have known how young Rapp was.

      • Lazycrockett

Being a rebellious 14 year old teenager.

        • Gretchen

Fourteen year olds go where they are taken. Someone, whether it was the parent or some other adult, should have known better.

    • SoCalGal20

I just got home so I can elaborate on my comment now. The story I heard about Spacey wasn’t specifically underage boys but I knew somebody who was friends with somebody who worked with him in theater and the male actors were basically warned about being alone with him, that he might make unwanted advances, etc. And my recollection was his preference was younger guys.

      • gaycuckhubby

I’ve read several accounts of him getting young (legal) crew members fired from sets if they didn’t sleep with him.

        • SoCalGal20

Oh, and aside from being a creep he’s apparently just an all around asshole to work with, at least if you’re crew.

      • BobSF_94117

        OMG. A “sexual advance”. Gads…

        • SoCalGal20

          “UNWANTED” being the operative word.

          • BobSF_94117

One might not know that it’s unwanted, no?

          • Gretchen

If the advance is made by an adult to a minor, it is by definition unwanted. Period. Adults need to keep their hands (and genitals) off kids. Kids can’t consent. The end.

          • BobSF_94117

Look, I understand all that. At the same time, as things stood 32 (I think that’s the right number) years ago, given what the closet imposed on both 14 and 26 yos, a sexual relationship between them would not be unfathomable. And, yes, there is the issue of legal consent. Nevertheless, a drunken incident, from which sex did NOT result, is not enough for me to want to crucify the 26yo.

          • Gretchen

You are right that behavioral norms regarding the age of consent for a sexual relationship were blurrier then than they are now. I don’t clearly remember everything we said on the subject last night, and Disqus is only minimally cooperative right now, so I can’t refresh my mind. However, the core of my argument is that unwanted sexual advances are inappropriate (Rapp says they were unwanted) regardless of the ages of the persons involved and the sexual mores of the time, and pressing unwanted advances on a teenager who isn’t legally able to consent is abhorrent. Using the closet seems like an excuse to me, but that is not my story to tell or line to draw. I don’t have the right to comment on it’s impact.

I don’t think it’s necessary to crucify anyone over it, but I don’t think behavior changes without motivation. Maybe the next big name actor/producer/politician/policeman/Supervisor of Ditch Digging will think twice about making sexual advances toward someone if the consequence is public lambasting.

          • BobSF_94117

Mr. Spacey did not “press unwanted advances”. He reportedly made one drunken move and either passed out or waited to see if it worked. As these things go, it’s almost gentlemanly.

          • Gretchen

Okay. We can agree to disagree. Enjoy the rest your afternoon.

          • SoCalGal20

What are you saying? I think I was clear in what I said. Guys were warned about him because he’s a fucking creep.

          • BobSF_94117

Is anyone in Hollywood not a creep? I mean among the actors?

          • SoCalGal20

            Yes.

      • safari

One of the times I was “advanced” upon by an older man when I was young took place in the catwalks above the local theater. The director — who I was warned went after teen boys — started to go into about how I was always acting through life and trying to relate to me. He was on a stage lift. I was on a literal catwalk. Awkward.

        • SoCalGal20

          Indeed.

          • safari

When it comes down to it there were at least two other occasions where I was way to young to do anything. I still don’t process them well.

          • gaycuckhubby

I’m sorry that happened to you, safari

          • safari

The only thing I can say is that they were quick and happened in public. It’s just — how does one react to that? All I could do in one case is just stare at a guy who groped me through my clothes and in the other case wonder what in the hell just happened as a guy ground himself into me during a group photo.

          • gaycuckhubby

All those things enter in to your view of adults and trust and consent and sex. It sucks that it happened

          • safari

Thanks. I’m not traumatized just… WTF. These were guys who worked with other children / young teens.

          • gaycuckhubby

Its crazy that people would rather warn CHILDREN to stay away from predators than not hire the predator.
            Smgdh

          • safari

I talked with some of my female friends my age. It wasn’t uncommon that someone they had contact was known to be a predator by the kids themselves.

            Crazy

We’re all just hoping it’s eons later rather than this week.

Perhaps the most elegant expression of that was “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Sara Teasdale.

      • safari

I was in WeHo once. I was driving to meet a friend to go to a bar she wanted to visit since she flew in. Bruce Vilanch jay walked in front of my car. It was a spiritual moment.

          • Cuberly Deux

I don’t think he’s closeted. He married a guy a few years back and it made the news.

          • Lazycrockett

But the show seemed to take great pains to never address the pink elephant in the room. If I remember correctly.

Closet is not the issue. Sexual predators like serial killers have warp minds. They have little or no regards for another human. Their victims are objects to be possessed and manipulated. They either suffer superiority complex or inferiority complex. At some point both of those complex is one of the same.

          • gaycuckhubby

            I agree

    • bambinoitaliano

This should be interesting as House of Cards season 6 is within days to begin production. It’s lightly going to be cancel if this news makes the round. I think Hollywood Studio better be adding more clauses to contracts for production crew to be liable for financial loses when individual behavior result in the cancellation of production. The risk of losing money and reputation will be the additional deterring factor for the offenders.

Superheroes don’t arrest people in their homes without a warrant. Superheroes don’t stake out abused women at the courthouse where they’re going to testify in court about the abuse they suffered. Superheroes don’t stop AMBULANCES on the way to hospital (that’s what they did to Rosa Maria) to have emergency surgery.

Tweet all the bullshit you want, it doesn’t make you superheroes or even fucking decent human beings. You’re a bunch of fascist thugs.

Yes, it’s apparently a blockbuster article but I haven’t read it yet, either.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

What drives me crazy is that people like Sackler and the Kochs aren’t rendered “untouchable” by society to the point nobody wants to be seen with them or associate with them. Also, this is why I am not the biggest fan of a lot of charities is because when it comes down to it, all they do is whitewash reputations of oligarchs.

        • safari

Reality forever as far as I can tell.

    • Let it never be forgotten: They DELIBERATELY formulated prescription opioid dosages for maximum profit AND maximum addictiveness, and then began paying off hospitals and doctors to hand out prescriptions like candy.

      • safari

Adding some details. They SOLD this drug as one that could be taken TWICE a day. With no evidence that was the case. The drug couldn’t be taken every 12 hours. By AT LEAST 8 HOURS the drug wore off. Doctors were TOLD to INCREASE the dosage to meet the advertising claims. Fast acting high + quick withdrawal + actual pain to start = addiction. The piece notes that even one of their staff was *fired* because she fell prey to it.

  • boobert

A different take on Kevin Spacey, I had a neighbor’s 16 yo son who got locked out ask if he could use the bathroom. When he came out , he was nude and begging to blow me. I was about 23. I panicked and ran out of my own apartment. I was more concerned that he would get mad and say I molested him. If he had, how could I prove it? I kept telling him to please get dressed and find someone his own age.

    • safari

A good call. Long ago I was acquainted with a man who now is in government. He participated as a counselor in a program with youth of that age. Something similar happened. He was torn: say nothing and be accused or report it, which ended up calling this boy’s parents. He chose the latter, which was wise but.. man. He did nothing wrong, but his options were either let it go unmentioned and be accused or out this teen. I think he did the right thing.

      • boobert

So , if you tell the parents and the kid lies, your screwed.

        • safari

Which is why he initiated a response immediately. He left the situation at once, reported it, and could tell a direct, clear story.

      • Gretchen

I don’t know you, and I have no right to call you out, but both stories you have told tonight are popular porn tropes. Either you have lived a life most restrict to fantasy or you are blowing smoke to add fuel to the Spacey scandal flame. I really hope you know that the situation you described with the doctor is blatant sexual assault and not just an “lol” situation as you ended your post. This situation you describe with a neighborhood teenager would be extremely serious in real life, and you are quick to place a teenager in the role of predator by questioning if Rapp might have sent “mixed signals” to Spacey. Taken as a whole, I really hope you are just trying to troll here and not a potential predator who would victim blame to cover his own behavior.

If I am overstepping or in error, I apologize. I just want to draw attention to the fact that in each scenario, you gave at least some credence to the idea of the teen in the situation initiating or at least not objecting to sexual assault from an adult.

        • safari

Either you have lived a life most restrict to fantasy or you are blowing smoke to add fuel to the Spacey scandal flame. I really hope you know that the situation you described with the doctor is blatant sexual assault and not just an “lol” situation as you ended your post.

          .

I never said such a thing about a doctor. I had men that *did* assault me when I was too young to know what it meant.

I also commented on a young man who had to decide how to respond to an underaged youth that was being inappropriate. He did the right thing by reporting it immediately.

          • gaycuckhubby

I think they were directing the post to boobert 🙂
Probably replied on the wrong message

          • Gretchen

            Safari,

You have my most sincere apology. I accidentally replied to you when my message was intend for boobert. Your response to him was spot on and I agree entirely.

        • boobert

I think porn got ideas from my life. Both circumstances for me were absolutely true. I was never even talked to that kid again. I felt bad thinking he needed help with coming out ,but stayed away. As for the doctor, it was back in the 70’s and they would have laughed a gay man out of court. I stopped it before it went further. It bothered me for being so stupid. As I left the office, the receptionist asked about the bill. I told her the doctor should pay me, and to discuss it with him. I never got a bill.

          • Gretchen

Then I apologize to you as well. Sexual assault is a touchy subject all around, and I have more personal experience with it than I care to relive even in memories this far removed. I won’t beleaguere the point. Again I apologize for causing offense.

    • gaycuckhubby

Not teally a different take. You did the right thing Spacey did the wrong thing (and allegedly initiated contact)

      • boobert

With Spacey, there are multiple accounts. If a kid lies , they would still be believed over a gay man. I avoid kids at all times. If people ask if I want to hold the baby, I walk away.

        • Lazycrockett

Spacey has a history of using power and manipulation to get what he wants. Its an open secret, why you seem to be carrying his water is beyond me. He is getting what he deserves.

          • boobert

Like I said ,Spacey has multiple accusations, so I am not defending him. I have seen cases where a kid lied about it and has caused lots of problems, even jail time.

  • Blake J Butler

No, he’d still have to put up with St. birdie’s purist shit and grandiose views that never would have seen the light of day in a republican administration. Two, he’d still be up against baby huey, the russians still would have hacked us and influenced our elections, so no i do not think any democrat would have won last year, because of infighting brought on by pissed off sander’s supporters and their votes and non votes in the election, influenced by the russians, and baby huey himself being the fucking mother fucker that he is, still would have probably won by the EC with Biden winning by the popular vote again like Gore.

    https://twitter.com/POLITICOMag/status/924835381123715072

    • Biden would not have secured the nomination. Reasons: Clinton and Sanders both.

      • Blake J Butler

He was popular as VP, but when he ran for president he didn’t even come close in 08′.

        • That’s right. And by time he’d have had to make the decision, the Clinton juggernaut was in full operation with Sanders sucking up the rest of the electoral oxygen.

Biden didn’t stand a chance, esp. as he wasn’t prepping for years like Clinton had been.

          • Lars Littlefield

I like Joe Biden. He may have wanted to be president, but he’ll most likely enjoy a good active life as an elder statesman who will be at our backs to put down the assholes. I think it is important that since the neo-cons alt-right, Klan Klubs, pedestrian racists and Trumpanistas are wrecking havoc that they do such a good job of fucking things up we’ll have people like Biden around to help put things right so the loons can never hold office again.

      • Lazycrockett

Biden has never made it pass the 3 months of primary season. Plus the media would once again have a field day with his gaffes.

      • Cuberly Deux

I would say that he does appeal to the OH, IN and PA dem, and “dem” voters though. Meaning the white supposedly forgotten.

    • Lazycrockett

Never trust what a Republican has to say bout the democratic party.

      • Blake J Butler

That’s another thing, if it wasn’t him, then they wanted sanders to win the nomination, because they had a pile of ads ready to go for him, since his polling numbers were moot because he was scandal free basically during the primary and nobody wasn’t paying him any attention to him and his problems, just more of hillary’s drawn out past, and spending a year and a half talking about her fucking emails.

    • greenmanTN

Same attacks, different narrative. Ole Joe the big mouth, always says the wrong thing. Nice guy but not good enough to be President. Will embarrass us in front of the world. Support for Biden is misogyny because it’s Hillary’s time but she’s a woman… blah blah blah.

Not me saying that, I love Biden, but that would have been the story.

Personally I think every LGBT person and ally should acknowledge that Biden is the one who forced the administration’s hand on gay marriage, made things move faster than they were planning.

Purely selfish: I don’t follow Anthony Rapp. My now heroin dead ex from years ago loved him, so i have very strange feelings. But I must say, watching the new Star Trek, he’s one of the joys to see acting.

  • In Catalonia, in futbol, in a huge international sporting upset, the newest team to enter La Liga this year, Girona (a very pretty small city north of Barcelona) upset the reigning champs of Spanish Soccer and richest franchise in the entire world, Real Madrid, 2-1 today. Watched Ray Donovan this evening. They are so au courant. There was a scene with Ray listening to his probation counselor who says, “Trust me, Ray.” Ray has a flash back to the moment his parish priest said, “Trust me Ray” when he was an alter boy. Then we are shown the priest pulling back his hassock to reveal the smallest dick and tiny balls imaginable. I feel for the actor who played the priest. They didn’t pay him enough for displaying his short comings. But the art directors for RD are into realism. I suppose most child molesting priests aren’t packing much.

OK .. who do you think going to be Indicted this week?
    I say Manafort or Flynn.

    • I say Manafort if I had to guess. But is there any chance Trump is going to fire Mueller this week? Or issue blanket pardons and shut this all down? My friend in Spain who is a lawyer was flabbergasted Trump could just issue blanket pardons and stop this investigation (well except for the New York and other state charges).

      • blackstar

his ability to pardon them under the circumstances is still being debated . In case he does his chances of being removed is dramatically increased.

Look at his articles circa 2005 or earlier compared to now.

  • OT- About the ACA– I got notice of my Blue Cross Florida rate increases for 2018 and almost passed out. The cost of my plan seemed to triple to $550 a month. But this is not the case — Subsidies (which over 93% of people in Florida get) are also rising — due to Trumpcare’s harsh scoring mechanisms. In effect, I am only paying a $90 rise to $270 a month for my policy — a 33% increase, still high, but something I can live with. Although the American Taxpayer is going to save 7 billion next year because Trump is cutting off cost -sharing subsidies, they are going to pay $20 – 30 billion more because companies like Blue Cross Florida (which has done a good job here of expanding ) have figured out how to pass along most of the rise to the Federal Government through other means. What the Republicans seem to have forgotten is that the crucial overall subsidies are tired to the second lowest Silver Plan available in each county — and if those plans are jacked up 45%, the subsidies are jacked up 45%! The only people they are hurting are people rich enough to buy other policies not on the federal exchange– private policies. Florida and other states are sabotaging plans to destroy Obamacare as best as they can.

    • My current very modest plan in NM went up about 35%.

Honestly, I’m probably just going to suck it up and not try to change to something else next year.

I get no subsidies at all.

      • Here Florida Blue put in an across the board 45% rate increase for plans with no subsidies — perhaps in my county — what is what it looks like to everyone.,

        • That’s kinda why I looked at my plan, then at the rate increase letter, then realized the GOPers were gonna fuck with ACA no matter what.

And realized that dealing with Healthcare.gov was gonna be a nightmare this year, along with dealing with the automatic payment stuff and just said yesterday, “Fuck it. I’m not window-shopping. I’m not getting a new plan AGAIN for next year. I’ll just keep what I have and hope for the best.”

At least if I get sick, for now it won’t necessarily equal instant medical bankruptcy, as it had been for most of a decade before ACA passed.

  • William

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I see this as a problem where consent and ownership of one’s body isn’t deeply centered in our society. One government party’s main selling point to its base is the promise to make women into a man’s broodmare on demand whether she wants to be or not. Because of religion, I have to worry if I will have euthanasia taken off the table even if I’m in the most horrible pain and going to die anyway (I’m not ill. It’s just that this is one of my worst nightmares).

Children are basically furniture in that parents can do almost anything to them w/o punishment. Children are not taught about the concept of consent during grade school; it can’t be left alone until high school. Even mothers have bought in to the “boys will be boys” crapola even if the other victims were her own daughters (points to the Duggars).

And mostly, our society has to stop demanding nothing matters more than the convenience and enjoyment of the rich and the powerful (mostly) men.

  • Re: Kevin Spacey. I’m getting it: What he did is inexcusable and I retract my “not bad” comment about his published public apology.

That said, it’s important to use the correct terms. Here’s a helpful thread.
    https://twitter.com/leahmcelrath/status/924861353092943872

It in no way changes the wrongness of his (alleged) behavior. He’s also not helped by muddying the waters with respect to what it means to be Bi or Gay. And he conflated both of those with his apparent attraction to early to late adolescent boys, which it seems clear he acted upon when he was younger and may well have continued later on.

Legally, he cannot obtain consent from a 14yo boy, as Mr. Rapp was back then. That made what he did statutory sexual assault.

That said, it’s also worth remembering that in many jurisdictions, had Mr. Rapp been a 14yo girl, it would have been 100% legal for Mr. Spacey to marry her. And then to have sex with her as much as he wanted. This is also horrifically wrong.

So this problem is bigger than anyone wants to admit. I am glad, however, we’re seeing a sexual harassment and assault cultural housecleaning happening. Just wish it wasn’t happening simultaneously with what could be a full-on fascist takeover of America’s democratic republic.

    • William

Once those youngsters are in the throes of puberty, the correct term is Ephebophilia.

      • Lazycrockett

An adult doesn’t touch anyone under 18.

        • Not in states that allow for child marriage. Then it happens all the damned time.

          • Lazycrockett

            that aint marriage.

          • Legally, it is.

The age of marriage in the United States is 18, with the exception of Nebraska (19) and Mississippi (21). Every state allows exceptions to their age of marriage. Most states allow marriage at 16 and 17 with parental consent, and some states also make exceptions subject to judicial approval, or cases of pregnancy. When all exceptions are taken into account, 25 US states[4] have no minimum age requirement.[5][6] Twenty-five of the jurisdictions have a minimum age in these cases, the youngest being 13 (New Hampshire, females only).[7][6]

            source: Wikipedia

More than 200,000 children were married in the US over the past 15 years, new figures have revealed.

Three 10-year-old girls and an 11-year-old boy were among the youngest to wed, under legal loopholes which allow minors to marry in certain circumstances.

The minimum age for marriage across most of the US is 18, but every state has exemptions – such as parental consent or pregnancy – which allow younger children to tie the knot.

In May, the high-profile Republican governor for New Jersey declined to sign into law a measure that would have made his state the first to ban child marriage without exception. Chris Christie claimed it would conflict with religious customs.

At least 207,468 minors married in the US between 2000 and 2015, according to data compiled by Unchained At Last, a group campaigning to abolish child marriage, and investigative documentary series Frontline.

The true figure is likely to be much higher because 10 states provided no or incomplete statistics.

The New York Times’ Nicholas Kristoff recently highlighted the plight of one woman, Sherry Johnson, who says she was forced to marry at age 11. Ms Johnson, who had given birth to at least one child by age 10, described her married life as “terrible”.

Spacey is fully guilty of being a coward. He could have just come out and still kept his dating life private.

I personally think he can exit the closet as a member of the gay community, but he should give interviews that denounce the closet and should also do the following:
[1] discuss its effect on a gay actor’s professional life
[2] discuss how he would fight abuse in the Entertainment industry of gay men by gay men, as well as by straight men
[3] his personal role in making life difficult for others, including Rapp.

It’s disgusting that Spacey came on to Anthony Rapp was when he was only 14. I recently rewatched Adventures in Babysitting, made in 1987 when Rapp was 16. He definitely looked like a child back then.

    • billbear1961

I’m only now seeing this story: he accuses Spacey of sexually assaulting him when he was 14 and Spacey was 26?

Spacey doesn’t deny it but has offered only a hamfisted “apology”??

      • Lazycrockett

Kevin came out as a gay man so he has successfully mudded the water.

        • billbear1961

Only possible in a society where the press is corrupt or easily manipulated or just doesn’t CARE about the truth, about the POINT of a story.

Buzzfeed. And I’m seeing a bunch of gay men (and others) completely disgusted by how the press is running with Spacey’s distraction. It’s the same bullshit Trump gets away with.

            Actually, I think they’re:

            a) Dumb and easily distracted.
            b) Know their audience is dumb and doesn’t get nuance, so goes with the short, flashy title and story.
            c) Both.

Pick one; my personal choice is a bit of a) with a large dose of b), so it’s not exactly a c).

          • billbear1961

I’d add LAZY and not much concerned with accuracy (especially if they’re being paid or pressured to look the other way or if inaccuracy–dishonesty–will SELL).

Worse still, he makes it sound like he’s reformed and that, because of this revelation, he will do the “honourable thing” and live openly as a gay man. Go fuck yourself Kevin.

Yeah, the denouement of his statement was….yikes….just plain NOPE.

  • boobert

I want people to take Corey Feldman seriously . They portray him as a drugged out mess. He’s been talking about rape for years and no one listens.

    • And on more than a few occasions, has pointed out the rapes were why he turned to drugs in the 1st place. I don’t know how he survived.

      • fuzzybits

Makes you wonder why Dana Plato got into the drugs in the first place.

        • She likely had a similar story.

    • She’s right:
      https://twitter.com/LtUhura2017/status/924881297201180672

‘Catamites’ were a term and a role dating back to Roman times. This wasn’t gay/straight. This was boys being used whatever their own sexual orientation as sex-toys for straight older men. Who were typically NOT homosexual themselves.

Again also, not pedophilia but hebephilia (or ephebophilia), and in this particular pathology, it’s not homosexuality at all. It’s about one male dominating another weaker and younger male. The younger male’s sexual attributes probably don’t even arouse the older one’s. It’s the fact of domination and subjugation of someone physically smaller but similar.

Then when caught and confronted, they now weaponize gayness as a tool to excuse their sickening behavior.

I guarantee that if Spacey lives a life “as a gay man,” every one of his relationships will be lopsided and unequal and characterized by fostering dependency on physical, personal, sexual, and financial bases.

I’m offended by his offhand declaration that he’s bi but will ‘live as a gay man.’ I’m hoping y’all are offended by his immediately moving on to using you as his shield and making folks think y’all are potential pedophiles (wrong term, but applicable in this context).

Great movie. I always admired Kevin Spacey as an actor, and like most of the world, I knew he was gay. Going after a 14 year old is without a doubt horrible. I also wonder if there were other teens he went after, and actually completed the assault.

Trying to excuse himself as being in a drunken haze is no excuse at all, I’m sure he’s found out that the statute of limitations has expired on these charges, but I sure hope he’s SWEATING bullets that another one more recent won’t levels charges at him or he’s toast! What’s frustrating about this whole debacle, is that a lot of media and even prominent entities will gloss over the women that are lining up to accuse well known people for these actions, yet, Spacey’s case will just inflame the right to point fingers and scream that Gay men are obviously predators and attempt to roll back even more civil rights protections we’ve struggled for and fought hard to achieve.

  • greenmanTN

Vis a vis the Spacey thing, the conversation about sexual harassment/assault/abuse is important but there will be attempts by the right wing/right-leaning media to use this as a distraction from Trump, and it’s important not to let them get away with it. Whatever’s happened to Anthony Rapp, and I believe him completely, happened 30 years ago and we cannot allow it to distract too much.

I say that as a former ephebophile’s dream, a willing participant in my own abuse, insofar as a minor can consent. This IS an important discussion that needs to happen, but don’t let it become the next shiny object that distracts the populace and allows Trump to hide yet again.

I’m concerned that I not be perceived as an apologist for Spacey or something when that is not my intention. I have shared some of my old art work here recently and this is the “coming out to myself” panel of what I originally conceived as a short graphic novel about growing up gay in the semi-rural 1980s South. It is the only panel in fact, because it leaves something out and I realized that to go forward I had to tell the truth, that I had this epiphany at 13 while walking home after having sex with an adult man, and the issues were too thorny and complicated for me to address at that time and I was ashamed of the truth.

I guess I’m trying to establish my bona fides here, prove that I’m not defending Spacey or anyone else. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/e61fb7b49f2c33f4dc96b3c90b003db5813492a8cb56fcd5f7317d8c00cedb87.jpg

What you just wrote, your coming out ‘declaration’ is a clearer ‘picture’ of who you are is a helpful learning curve. Thank you for all the rest you wrote as well, re: Spacey and the rest will be used as another shiny distraction.

“a willing participant in my own abuse, insofar as a minor can consent”

      But obviously, you couldn’t.

I find no contradiction in honoring your memories (not to mention art), greenman, while fighting to make sure that it never goddamn happens to another 13 year old!

    • Dazzer

Whether we like it or not, this is going to be used as a squirrel because of the timing of the announcement.

I, too, believe Rapp’s account. He was 14 years old and he was put in a situation that can only be construed as sexual. Not only could that situation not be considered consensual legally, Rapp himself knew at the time that he wasn’t consenting.

What the ever-lovin’ fuck was Spacey doing coming on to a 14-year-old boy?

The only ‘up’ side to this story is that Spacey did not persist with his advances and Rapp left without being more seriously molested. When Rapp said “No”, Spacey accepted the refusal.

Against that, Rapp says that the experience left him considerably scarred emotionally. And there’s no reason to doubt him. It’s also worth pointing out that Rapp told the same story about an A-list actor (without naming names) back in 2001. He’s not ‘suddenly’ remembered this. He’s been carrying this pain with him for a long time.

I agree with you that this is not going to an easy discussion because it will bring in incredibly complex aspects of gay male sexuality.

I’m still thinking about it, to be honest.

Spacey is scum, but it’s part of a far wider and more complicated part of being gay.

      • greenmanTN

I agree with you completely. My own experiences derailed me completely but I kept them separate and compartmentalize, not seeing for many years how it was affecting me, suddenly failing in school, acting out in other ways, trying to handle alone what I was not equipped to handle at all, building walls intended to protect that eventually become prisons. It is not normal to be picked up after Jr High by a local businessman and taken to a motel.

  • OT/ after reading Anthony Rapp’s side of the story I see that those of you arming yourselves with pitchforks and burning torches are being a bit hasty and over reactionary

    • Leo

I read Anthony Rapp’s side of the story. What am I missing here? Rapp didn’t escape well enough and age is blurred for Kevin when alcohol’s involved? Honestly trying to see what you’re getting at.

      • Read some of the commentary about Spacey…what he did was inappropriate and gross but not “rape” like some people are screaming about.
Years and years ago, sometime in the mid-70’s I was living and working in Paris. One night out the Club Sept Rudolph Nureyev came up to me and without saying a word grabbed my genitals and squeezed. Yes, it was sexual assault (technically) but not pitch fork worthy in my opinion. I add my story only to illustrate that certain people (I am sure there are instances of women abusing their position also) think that because of their fame and or wealth that it entitles them to treat others basically as objects. I don’t know at all what went through Nureyev’s mind but I imagine that he believed that those he chose to hit on would be extremely flattered and honored to have the famous dancer literally manhandle them in public. I was not, it hurt and I felt embarrassed.

        • Leo

Rapp wasn’t flattered. I don’t see anyone saying rape but sexual assault. You don’t get to speak for Rapp or anyone here on this board.

          • -M-

Also the point isn’t that he sexually harassed Rapp once while drunk long ago. Rapp came forward with his story because Spacey apparently has a pattern of sexual assault that he’s been allowed to get away with. Possibly other victims will speak out now.

    • netxtown

All of this reminds me of a philosophy course I took a couple hundred years ago. I don’t recall the philosopher – but his take went along the lines of being invisible and what would we do – how would we act – towards others. Needless to say, his conclusion was that we would do whatever the hell we wanted as there was zero repercussion. Now fast forward a couple thousand years to an era of rules and laws, stigma and stereotyping, money and “power” – and it seems we have made a huge attempt to insure the invisible person never takes a victim. The current prevailing social order demands that children are protected – yet we know all to painfully well the deeds of some priests. We know of 10 year olds ‘sold’ into marriage. And we have areas of our country in which the oldest profession (sex for money) is legal. I get it that we are struggling to move forward towards an ideology – and I wonder if we are gonna make it. The invisible person does exist.
