Hillary Blasts Trump Administration’s “Scary” Assault On LGBT Rights In Speech At HRC Annual Gala [VIDEO]

Politico reports:

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on Saturday blasted the Trump administration’s record on civil rights for gay, lesbian and transgender people during its first nine months, telling an audience of LGBT advocates in Washington “we have some tough battles ahead.”

Clinton took aim at the White House’s efforts to roll back the Affordable Care Act and ban transgender service members, as well as its silence on international LGBT issues, during her remarks at the national dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBT rights organization.

“The attacks on the LGBT community here at home and around the world are striking and scary. I can only imagine what it’s like to be in the position that so many people still find themselves in in our country,” Clinton said. “I do know what it feels like to be torn down and attacked and I want you to know that I’m with you,” she added.

This also happened last night:

Protesters, many dressed as zombies, on Saturday marched around the Walter E. Washington Convention Center where the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner was about to begin. Following the march, a number of activists blocked the front entrances to the convention center.

Other doors on the side of the convention center were opened to accommodate guests. A statement released by the activist group No Justice No Pride stated the protesters dressed as zombies to “reflect the horror done by HRC partnering with a monster like Wells Fargo.”

Wells Fargo served as the presenting sponsor of the 21st annual HRC National Dinner. “In June, at the Pride Parade, we targeted Capital Pride’s willingness to sell our communities out to harmful corporations,” said Emmelia Talarico, chair of No Justice No Pride’s steering committee. “Today, we’re targeting HRC’s willingness to do the same.” Talarico was referring to the activist group’s disruption of the Capital Pride Parade in a non-violent direct action last June.

VIDEO: Below is the full speech, which opens with an introduction from Billie Jean King.

  • j.martindale

I weep that we failed to elect her President.

    • Ross

      We failed at nothing.

      We were robbed.

      By Russia.

      • gaycuckhubby

We failed in the sense that she should have won by 20%

        • Strepsi

Yes, that it was even close is a stain on U.S. history. Everywhere else in the world she was 80 / 20 over Trump.

        • Ninja0980

Also that so many bought into the both sides are the same bullshit.

          • cleos_mom

And are still buying into it, if some of the bullshit I hear on “Progressive” Radio is any indication.

      • Strepsi

Agree and worth repeating every time. Robbed at the state (Georgia etc) and national (DNC email hacks, collusion) levels

      • JCF

I don’t really blame Russia. I blame the U.S. TRAITORS who facilitated them!

    • TrueWords

The Electoral College failed the nation by not speaking for the people as it was designed to do

      • Gerry Fisher

I was so disappointed in that. This scenario is right in line with what the founders envisioned–putting “preserving slavery” aside for a second–and the members of the electoral collage threw up their hands and claimed there was nothing they could do.

        • canoebum

That’s because they’re all party hacks these days. Not a patriot among the entire 538.

          • danolgb

Here’s a secret.. they always were. There is a massive myth that the EC is some noble body. They’ve always been partisans from day one. Most are even legally bound to vote the way their state voted.

      • DonnaLee

        They had one job…

    • cleos_mom

But we were spared the unspeakable fate of having a head of state who’s on speaking terms with the HRC.

She was so good. Made me get all the feels realizing what we could have had.

Ps. She’s still getting protesters from the left? Jesus Fucking Christ

    • rextrek1

..while I understand – some- of their gripes – NOW is NOT the Time for Division…..We Must UNITE Against this Scourge that is Trump!

      • gaycuckhubby

Yep. It makes me worried for 2020. No candidate will be pure enough

      • Strepsi

I do understand some of the gripes too – but man the left has got to get some simple agendas straight. We always a re so “sensitive” to other issues we mash them all in. It reminds me of Occupy Wall Street, or the Black Lives Matter pride protest in Toronto, with which I was sympathetic, as black Canadians are targeted by police too…but then some spokespeople started talking about corporate floats or things and it’s just “please, push through the ONE thing, now’s the chance!” So yeah — the agenda should be WIN midterm and local elections!

        • jerry

Yes, I understand their issues, but protesting HRC or, earlier this year, the DC and NYC Pride parades, isn’t productive. I actually think that the Human Rights Campaign has followed a rather brilliant strategy over the years of winning over Corporate America. They followed a similar strategy to the Sullivan Principles: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sullivan_principles)
which helped end apartheid in South Africa. Any corporation that didn’t/doesn’t have non-discrimination policies for LGBT employees was on the list and graded as such. And we wouldn’t have come so far, so fast, without the corporate support. So, while many corporations are bad actors and pride events have become entirely too commercialized, I am happy that people who work for most major corporations will no longer be fired for being gay.

          • fuow

Yes and no. The HRC policy of throwing our transgender relations off the bus is unpardonable and I shall never forgive or forget that.
So, yes, they’ve done some minor good for us. On the whole, though, their contributions have not been in alignment with the amount of money and power we granted them.

      • Stephen Elliot Phillips

That would require a mob with critical thinking skills.

    • Todd20036

THere’s a reason I blocked the Bernie bros. They’ll never learn. They could march off to camps and feel superior because they didn’t vote for HilLIARy…

      (their term)

    • TheManicMechanic

BernieBros and JillShits will keep on broshitting, it’s all about them in their minds.

    • fkevin

As I read it, the protest was NOT against Hillary Clinton, it was against the HRC and therefore the sponsor of the event for night Wells Fargo. And I have to say it does not look good on HRC with Wells Fargo behavior before, during and after the Great Recession, and the recent fake account scandal.

      • cleos_mom

It was a stupid choice just the same. A complete and total waste of energy and of what few brain cells they possessed.

      • justmeeeee

HRC and Wells-Fargo are just about equally corrupt, so they make a good fit.

        • Bill Haffey

Would you care to provide PROOF for that charge, or are like Trump, just spitting out unsupported claims hoping something sticks? What have you done to make the life of LGBT+ folk better? What have you done to work toward marriage equality? What have you done to get your members of congress to move on a federal ENDA bill? What have you done to build opposition to “religious freedom” bills that make discrimination legal? When was the last time you worked to change legislation? Perhaps if you helped you would know what HRC has done.

          • fuow

Wow, there. Hold on a moment, there. While it is true that the HRC has made some minor contributions, those of us who have actually been out and loud and proud and engaged since the mid-70s have seen far too much anti-transgender from them and (especially during the first Maine campaign) far, far FAR too much antipathy (to put it mildly) toward feminine gay men/drag queens/gender benders. HRC is very much a mixed bag – in my direct experience with them, I’d say 1% trick or treat candy and 99% poo.
And, yes, Wells Fargo is more than welcome to help us but that doesn’t change the fact that they’ve done some really atrocious things.

    • fuow

Yeah. Look – I’m to the left politically of nearly every one around here and I fought hard for her. It’s ridiculous that some of us on the left still think that ‘moral victories’ and purity tests mean anything.
We’re on the way to being the only group in the US against whom discrimination in daily life is LEGAL. What part of that did the stupid stunt of voting ‘Green’ or staying home to protest Clinton not being perfect prevent?
      None.
What part of that did these two stupid ‘lessons’ some on the left wanted to teach us CAUSE this?
      All of it.

    2. it could make me money (Milo)
    3. it made no difference who the candidate was I always vote Republican (the list of names is too long)

Hillary “DOMA Girl” Clinton: so qualified she didn’t have to campaign in Pennsylvania, Michigan or Wisconsin.

    • j.martindale

Honest to God, can’t you let this shit go!!! The woman was out day after fucking day for years going to every shitty little town in America trying to win votes. She went to the places the advisors and the so-called “experts” said would matter. You act like she was lying around on her ass like some princess waiting to be crowned. We never had a harder worker than her running for President.

      • Ross

        You are sweet.

You assume Jack is capable of being rational. And decent. And honest.

        • JackNasty

Apparently Clintonistas are incapable of discerning the truth.

Remind me, which President was impeached for lying under oath?

          • Ross

            Yes, dear..

          • Bad Tom

Why did you stop with the impeachment?
After the impeachment IS A TRIAL.

Bill Clinton was ACQUITTED at trial in the United States Senate.

A tiny fact you conveniently omitted.
Lying by omission is still lying, you stupid fucker.

          • JackNasty

On his last day in office in 2001, Clinton agreed to a five-year suspension of his Arkansas law license in order to head off any criminal charges for lying under oath about his relationship with Lewinsky.

The Senate’s vote didn’t change the fact Clinton lied under oath. It simply meant he wasn’t removed from office for it.

          • Bad Tom

So YOU ADMIT Bill Clinton was not convicted in any legal proceeding for lying under oath!

THAT MEANS HE IS NOT GUILTY UNDER THE LAW.

            Gotcha.

          • Bad Tom

Also, you are a boring liar.
            Ban bye bye.

          • cleos_mom

It was quite surprising last year how many Americans haven’t a clue as to what “rubber chicken circuit” means.

She accepts blame in that book.

By the end of next week, four anti-gay judges will be placed on various Circuit Courts around the country.
And since few cases make it to SCOTUS, the three women and one man that WILL be confirmed next week will be among the judges of last resort.
Something to keep in mind when any idiot wants to argue both parties are the same.
These four (and many others) never would have seen the light of day under Hillary.

The Clinton /Trump race inspired the lowest voter turnout in 20 years. Clintonistas are still blaming everyone except their failed candidate.

    • j.martindale

The expectations game fed into this. The pollsters gave her a 90 percent chance of winning.

      • Ross

The pollsters did not factor in the chances of the election being stolen.

        • j.martindale

And the fact that the Russians would be slandering her and helping to suppress the vote.

          • pch1013

With plenty of help from people on the left, like the Hillary Derangement Syndrome patient on this thread.

        • JackNasty

The election was Hillary’s to lose, and she lost it.

Clintonistas are still blaming everyone , except their failed candidate.

          • Ross

            Yes, dear.

      • John30013

As I recall, 538.com and most others had her around 65% to Trump’s 35%, at least near the end. But the pollsters were clearly wrong in the lead-up to the vote, and they need to figure that out for themselves.

        • j.martindale

Basically two to one odds. I stand corrected–at least in terms of the numbers. I still believe that would lead to very unrealistic expectations of her victory and suppression of the vote.

      • JackNasty

        Now it’s the pollsters’ fault.

Everyone is to blame, except Hillary.

        • j.martindale

Hell, no! I don’t blame her. She did everything she could. She has had an exemplary career of political SERVICE to our country, and championed liberal causes for decades. Did she make mistakes along the way? Yes. And some people–not to name names–pillory her for that. Some people buy into the slander levied against her. Some people are so enamored of their candidate, that they are blind to the virtues of other candidates. Do I agree with everything she has done? No. I wish she had not voted to give Bush the power to start the Iraq war. I think she has been too cozy with Israel. And I think she was late on gay issues. And she is probably also one of the best politicians I have observed in my relatively long life. But I won’t convince you, so continue on with your comments. I quit.

    • Bad Tom

You just want to make it OUR fault.
      To make YOU feel better.
      Just fuck off.

      • JackNasty

This isn’t about Senator Sanders, but since you brought up his name…the point is he opposed DOMA.

        • Ninja0980

He also opposed marriage equality and “evolved” right around the time Vermont’s legislature was passing it.

          • Indeed. He “evolved” around the same time Clinton did, too. In fact, was only a few years ago that he “evolved”. And even after he “evolved” he never really gave a shit about us.

          • JackNasty

Wrong, again this isn’t about Sanders, but he did oppose DOMA in 1996 while the Clintons supported it.

        • Stephen Elliot Phillips

Im not blaming anyone, troll. what I do see, however, is that every time there’s a thread on Hillary Clinton, some Hillary-hater goes out of their way to make an asshole of themselves telling the rest of us how we are stupid and how horrible clinton is.
THAT is some type of personal problem. Its really not normal to hate someone so much for no real tangible reason…….

          • JackNasty

So according to Clintonistas. any criticism of Hillary Clinton is hatred and is somehow abnormal.

            Got it.

          • cleos_mom

            “Clintonistas”?

Trump lies more, far more, far far more – demonstrably so. Look, I get it, you don’t lie her, a lot of people don’t, you think she’s shit. But as I said at the time, there is still a huge qualitative difference between a solid turd and infected, explosive diarrhea.

The weird question at the end and your answer are false equavalencies – here is no question that the U.S. would be better off with Hillary. Millions more would be insured, and other countries would have a shred of respect for the U.S.

      • pch1013

And we wouldn’t have an additional gay-hating bigot on the Supreme Court. Or an Attorney General who publicly advocates in favor of anti-gay discrimination. Or a president giving speeches to the “Value Voters Summit.”

But then facts have never mattered at all to the Hillary Derangement Syndrome crowd.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Ok, fair enough. But by posting this, are you suggesting that A) people can’t change their minds, B) that she was truly so egregious a choice that Trump was preferable and C) politicians are 100% truthful? As a pragmatist myself, I’ve never understood the naivete of some on the left when it comes to political reality. Helen Keller could see that Hillary was the better choice given the GOP’s candidate, yet many chose to ignore that reality. While it may have felt good to vote Bernie, Stein or not at all, the result is you have Trump. Yes, Hillary didn’t run the best or most comprehensive campaign and she should and has (read her book) owned up to it; but again, Helen Keller could see the stark contrast. So the question that also needs to be asked is: why did so many on the left who purported to be against racism, homophobia, misogyny, etc., having seen the writing on the wall, choose Trump by proxy over Clinton? That too, is a fair question that no one on the left has been willing to answer.

I’m not suggesting people can’t change their mind. Rather I’m concerned about the Clintons history of changing their minds at the expense of gay Americans.

In 1992, the Clintons promised to end the ban on gays in the military and support civil rights for gay Americans. Once in office the Clintons caved into anti-gay prejudice giving us Don’t Ask and the highest rate of anti-gay discharges ever recorded by the military. In 1996, Clinton announced his support for DOMA before the bill had even been written.

Would you buy a used car from either of the Clintons?

    • Dana Stinson

5 years ago I was a transphobic, homophobic conservative evangelical. Today, I’m a proud transgender woman who is more open and honest and caring to those around me. I am ashamed for who I once was.

We all grow. We all move in one direction or another. Hillary has been moving in ththe right direction. That’s okay in my book.

      • JackNasty

Funny, that’s what the Clintons said when Bill ran for the presidendency in 1992. They said they would support gay rights, even though they had previously opposed repealing Arkansas’ sodomy law..

As soon as Bil was inaugurated, he caved into conservative pressure and gave us Don’t Ask. Four years later, the Clintons endorsed DOMA before it was even written.

Would you say the same thing if given the opportunity the Clintons betrayed gay voters again?

        Fool me once….

LOL. Who took the picture I wonder. And is the bicyclist now on the No Fly List?

    • Friday’s_cat

Braver person than I considering how vindictive the Great White Dope’s minions of evil can be.

    • M Jackson

How could you not, in that situation?

    • Oscarlating Wildely

As an avid cyclist, I must note how Impressed I am with her poise and maneuvering. A tight right hand turn with an upturned left hand takes patience and skill. Well done, biking sister, well done!

    • JCF

      Hey gurl: you single? 😉

  • fuow

Now, to be honest, I am not in love with either HRC. However, not voting for Clinton was the cause of this misery and disaster we are in.
    It’s our own fault.
Time to own up to it.

    • canoebum

Speak for yourself, please. Who is “our”? I voted for her.

      • Ross

        Ditto.

      • pch1013

I did too. And I donated to her campaign. I have not regretted any of that for a single moment. My conscience is clear.

      • fuow

Sheesh. You just never learn, do you. Continue on with your ‘moral victories’, do please. Some of us actually are working to make life for gay and transgender people better in this country. Others still don’t see the threat.

        • canoebum

Whoa! Where did that come from?

          1) What makes you think I don’t do things to try and make life better for our community? 2) How did writing in Bernie’s name or staying home help us? 3) I see the threat, believe me, I see it.

I think you are confused. It was not the voters such as myself, who voted for Hillary Clinton, who made the mistake. It was the diehard Bernie supporters and those who stayed at home in protest because “she talked to bankers”, who cost us the election. Once again, Bernie was not the nominee of the party. He lost in the Primaries. The pouting Progressives and Leftists demanding purity stuck us with The Orange Menace. 70,000 votes in three states put him in office. How many purists stayed at home in those states? How many wrote in Bernie? When you Make the Perfect the Enemy of the Good, you get Trump.

    • I voted for her, and advocated those I knew do the same.

    • another_steve

I respect your honesty, fuow. You recognize you made a mistake and are owning up to it. We all make mistakes. Each and every one of us.

      Love to you.

    • I love dim sum

I voted Green Party, and I’m still proud of it. I’ve actually had people that voted for Hillary tell me that they were wrong for doing it, and wish they would have voted Green instead.

It’s your fault Trump is in office for pushing such a grossly inept candidate as Hillary on us.

  • AJD

Nice work seeing who your enemies are, No Justice No Pride.

  • JWC

She still has it Not as president but somewhere up there

  • Vista-Cruiser

By persistently including Republicans in their endorsements, Human Rights Campaign helped make Trump possible.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

None of this matters, because as many people, including a good chunk of JMG readers, made it abundantly clear that Hillary was far worse than Trump on LGBTQ issues and that Trump was a tolerable compromise to fucking over the Democrats. Remember? They’re exactly the same, so elections don’t really matter. Why do any of you care? /s

Yeah, you can tell my patience with the Sarandoning fucktards on the left is long gone.

    • JackNasty

      Said nobody ever.

Your straw man argument is just another ridiculous attempt to silence legitimate criticism of the Clintons.

      • JAKvirginia

“…silencing legitimate criticism of the Clintons.” You let us all know when that happens, m’kay? They’ve been criticized for every fucking thing under the sun, legitimate or not.

    • I love dim sum

She is just as bad as Trump when it comes to LGBT issues. She said in her own words she was anti marriage equality only 3 years ago, which is why I refused to vote for her and switched my registration to Green party. Permanently.

      • Zollergasse

        AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH! Shut the f… up!

  • justmeeeee

I hope everybody at the gala just had the GREATEST time ever! And I’m so proud to day that you did it without even one penny from me!

Hillary, go away, stop pretending you are on my side, when you were completely against marriage equality until 3 years ago.

She is just a passive aggressive version of Pence.

    • Zollergasse

This is the “thinking” that led to Trump getting elected. Give me strength.

  • Rick James Brown

Liked her then. Like her now. SO wish she had won.

  • bear on the peaks

Oh please… Hillary Clinton who after Ronald Reagan died, praised the Reagan’s response to Aids?
