DeVos Freezes Obama Regs On Scam For-Profit Colleges

The Associated Press reports:

The Trump administration is further delaying Obama-era protections for students defrauded by for-profit colleges, saying it needs more time to write new regulations. Tuesday’s announcement renewed criticism by Democrats and advocacy groups that the administration favors the interests of for-profit universities over students.

The Education Department posted a notice in the Federal Register saying it wants to delay the borrower defense rule until July 1, 2019, while a new rule is being written. The regulation allows students to have their loans forgiven if their schools deceived them about their education and career prospects.

It also transfers some of the financial responsibility for negative outcomes to the universities and prevents schools from making students sign away their right to sue the schools. The rule was supposed to take effect in July, but Education Secretary Betsy DeVos put it on hold while new rules were being crafted. Eighteen Democratic attorneys general have sued DeVos over the delay.

DeVos is sitting on 65,000 fraud claims and has not approved a single one since being confirmed.

Who would the “mainstream” GOP candidates have turned their backs on? Kellyanne worked for Cruz before she joined Trump. Betsy Devos was owed a favor from the *GOP*, not Trump personally. Rick Perry? Aside from Trump’s own idiot family, all his appointments were suggestions by GOP establishment politicians like Pence and Priebus.

    • clay

      Turmp knows Jerry Fallwell, jr.
Turmp doesn’t know any veterans in college.
Betsy DeVos had already driven out the Turmp appointee to oversee this program, and had considered Fallwell as his replacement.

        • Not all. Some were to be subverted into service for the corrupt Trumpy regime: DoD, DHS, Commerce, Treasury, to name a few. Yes, I count DoJ in that list because it’s necessary to aid in covering up the many crimes of the Trumpers.

DoE, Education, HUD, HHS, EPA, Interior—yes, those ones and others are among the “to be destroyed” list.

        • clay

          • ZRAinSWVA

It’s still revered in the hiring market, when technical competency is necessary to do a job. I’m really surprised that the fortune 500 companies aren’t making more noise…but then again, people are still going to college and graduating with good degrees, though the pipeline of receiving a decent education in a public school that allows one to go to college may be closing.

          • clay

The corporations that make things (rather than just the banks and managers who just move money) are making some noise, particularly around immigration policy and its effect on education, but they’re not very loud, and a lot of the smaller ones are too local to be visible on the national screen.

One gets the distinct impression that the conservative movement has little of substance left to its outlook. In its place is blind vindictiveness against anything “the liberals” have done. The problem is that the liberals support efforts against fraud and abuse across industries. Liberals support a scientific outlook and reliance on science to determine public policy. Thus, conservatives are attacking anti-fraud efforts and undermining science, all the while chuckling that they’re ‘sticking it to the liberals’ while they shoot themselves and their constituents in the face.

    • djcoastermark

Just the constituents, the politicians, lobbyists and churches just keep raking it in.

    • The wife and I had a chat about this, and we personally figure the rot in the Republican party really set in as they absorbed the racist Dixiecrats who bailed on the Democratic party in the aftermath of the 1960s civil rights movement legislation.

‘Republican Conservative’ in the 1960s and 70s meant something entirely different than what it became in future decades. Back then, ‘conservative’ could encompass the belief the gov’t had no business telling women they couldn’t have abortions or use birth control. Or that the wall between Church and State needed to be inviolable.

In addition to racism and bigotry, the Reagan-era Dixiecrats brought religious fundamentalism along with them and began using that to steer party policy. Over the next generation, nearly all of the moderates would be driven out and conservatism itself took on aspects of religious beliefs. We had to get to Reagan before Republicans would say with a straight face that tax cuts paid for themselves, for instance, or that climate change was a hoax. Trump himself as President is the result of ever escalating lunacy and the conversion of the GOP into a death-cult.

Now we’re at the point where the Democrats’ proposals are exactly those Republicans would’ve made 20-30 years ago and the GOP…well, they seem to be determined to run America into the ground and proclaim themselves lords over the ashes.

      • Clive Johnson

        Well put.

  • ted-

When will this nonsense end? Jesus on a stick! What a fucking twat!

    • edrex

it’s twats all the way down.

    • NZArtist

It will end when US voters realize they’re in a two-party system and need to vote out the most evil.
It will end when a proportional representation of government is popularized enough that local politicians feel empowered enough to push for it. That will thwart much of the current lobbying and lead to more than two political parties. That in turn moderates the policies of the main parties who now actually need to have policy to attract voters.
So… probably not in my lifetime.

      • safari

Your solution is wise but it requires change. And people are dumb.

        • safari

(But personally I’d rather ranked voting)

        • NZArtist

Well you can start with: When anyone tells you a third-party candidate is viable under the current electoral rules, you should immediately point out that is what got you Trump.
          It just doesn’t work.
Beat any of the immature children who have a tantrum that because their preferred candidate didn’t win the primaries that they’re not voting for the other one. Because that’s what gets you Trump.
Yeah, you’re right. People are dumb.
Come live with me. We just elected a young, ‘agnostic’, woman as our Prime Minister. And the previous-before-last Prime Minister was an atheist woman.
Proportional representation systems of elections are a good thing.

      • Friday

Probably we’ll only hear about ‘proportional representation’ when the rich and moneyed can’t gerrymander and cheat themselves into a ‘majority’ anymore. And maybe when they’re actually teaching civics about our *own* system enough that people actually know what it is.

Lets also remember the third party candidates, who sold the lie to some voters that both the Democrats and Republicans were the same.
