Colin Kaepernick Lands $1 Million Book Deal

The New York Post reports:

Colin Kaepernick has inked a book deal worth just over $1 million with Random House imprint One World, Page Six has exclusively learned. One World’s headed by book world superstar Chris Jackson, who also publishes Jay-Z and Ta-Nehisi Coates. He launched One World last year.

Ex-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kaepernick launched the current movement of NFL players protesting during the national anthem, and he’s recently filed a controversial collusion grievance against league owners. He’s still looking for a job in the NFL after opting out of his 49ers contract earlier this year.

Apparently they really did give him standing ovations, despite bitching about him constantly behind his back. It really is like that Twilight Zone episode about the child who would wish people under the corn field if they displease him.

      https://youtu.be/MTyhycwZMa4

      • AJ Drew

Even the news coverage about that is… odd. Was the standing ovation for Flake, or for DT? Meh, apparently nothing of substance was discussed by DT, but we know he ate 2 pieces of cherry pie and a plate of rice. lolz and sigh.

      • Cattleya1

Thanks for posting this! I have enjoyed them for ages. Got to see them once in New Orleans when I was in college.

      • another_steve

Greenman – You reference Rod Serling’s classic (1959-1964) The Twilight Zone series there. (We Zoners don’t talk about the subsequent Twilight Zone series – which featured some pretty good stuff but mostly rip-off dreck.)

In the episode entitled “It’s a Good Life” that you reference there, Bill Mumy was a child but gave one of the most memorable performances in the entire 156 episode series.

        https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/861cc5ad7996bce4f7b438774abe9149e57ba951461f328217db2a5d7afc97c3.jpg

        • Dayglo

I was forbidden to watch Twilight Zone as a kid because it was too freaking scary at times. My parents made one exception – they allowed me to watch my cousin Cloris play the mother to Billy Mumy in the classic “It’s a Good Life” episode. Cloris was an up and coming actress who’s had a hell of a career since … and even won an Oscar.
That episode still scares me shitless.

          • another_steve

I love Cloris Leachman’s performance in that. I hope your cousin knows how fortunate she was to have had a role in that episode – one of the best episodes of the entire series.

A bit of trivia: She and Bill Mumy are the only two performers to have appeared in both the original TZ series and its television revival in 2002.

Hate to be the stick in the mud here but I do have to agree with Bob Costas on Kaepernick.
He helped lay the groundwork for the current civil rights protests but someone who says both sides are the same really shouldn’t be the leader of a fight going forward.

  • gaycuckhubby

I’m guessing Flake wasn’t one of those leaping to his feet for Dear Leader

    Edit… sorry, wrong thread

A year ago Kaepernick pledged a 1 Million dollar donation to community based charities in $100,000 increments and has so far given away $800,000. That was approx 10 % of his salary that year. And that was knowing he was probably going to be unemployed for some time going forward.

I can guarantee that NONE of those who criticize him for his kneeling protest or his views have donated even a tiny fraction of that amount to any cause or charity whatsoever and if they did it was done as a tax write-off.

OT- I’m seriously considering having a yard sale. Good idea or hell on earth?

    • gaycuckhubby

      Both in my experience.
Hated it before and during. Was glad I did it afterwards.

    • jerry

I always found it too much hassle for pocket change…it’s easier to find a charity. Unless you have some very nice things that will bring in a lot of $$, I wouldn’t bother.

        • Treant

Oh, lord. My cousin gave me a set of those.

My cousin also has her place done in a Noah’s Ark theme. Or, “Let’s think about all the animals and people God drowned for…undefined reasons, really, since no rules had been given at that time except Name All The Beasts, and we were doing a good job at that.”

    • AJ Drew

Yup, both. Be ready at least an hour before whatever time you post as the start time, cuz the vultures arrive early, and then return late, too.

    • Adam King

Depends on your character. I, for example, would sooner slit my throat. I had a friend, an insane person who loves doing that sort of thing, do mine for me.

    • AJ Drew

You’re gonna try to sneak the kittens into the goods you’re selling, ain’t ya?

        • Lazycrockett

“Mom why is there meowing coming from that box of leather chaps and rainbow flags you got from that garage sale?”

          • greenmanTN

Please. I know my audience. That box will be labeled “cowboy dress-up gear and God flags.”

          • djcoastermark

Yeah, they really liked the cowboy dress up gear at the halloween social this year, never got so many slaps of approval on the backside before. Wow, got any more dress up gear mister ?

            lolz… (and I think I’d like that Mom…)

      • Lumpy Gaga

        SIGN SAYS “AS IS”!!!!

    • djcoastermark

Have done several over the years. A couple of tips. Set a clear start time, people will only come an hour early that way. Best luck is sat and sun. Keep the hours short, til noon/oneish. Don’t price too high and don’t be afraid to drop prices. After all, the stuff is stuff you want to get rid of. You don’t want to haul it all back in afterwards. The second day, if there’s anything left, drop prices, close up by noon at the latest and donate the rest to charity. Or, like I did one time, went and gave stuff away to families that needed it. It felt really good to give a struggling single mom and 4 kids with no dining table to eat at, a dining table with 6 chairs in good condition. She stopped by several years later and thanked me again letting me know how much it meant to her. So yes, a yard sale can be a bit trying, but can be rewarding in different ways.

      • LesbianTippingHabits

Yes, your goal is to get rid of stuff, not necessarily to make money.

        • greenmanTN

Both if possible. I have 3 more kittens to get spayed/neutered!

I’ve got a ton of books PB and HB but I know you get next to nothing for those…

          • AJ Drew

Honestly, you’d probably net more if you list on ebay even with the fees, but the online selling option is a prolonged pain (packing and shipping alone, beh…) vs a day or two of garage/yard sale hell. Pick your poison.

          • djcoastermark

I put out a ton of Sci Fi books that I no longer had room for when I moved. A school teacher dropped by and started gushing over them. She started picking out a bunch but kept saying she couldn’t decide, there were so many and her kids at the school would just love them. Yes, teachers now have to fork out a lot of their own money for the extras. She was the only one looking at books, (go figure) so I let her have them all for some stupid cheap price knowing they were going to be put to good use.

          • greenmanTN

A bunch of them are paperback mystery novels and I’m a bit obsessive about book care, so no cracked spines or dog eared pages. The other books are all over the place: cookbooks, history, etc.

          • fuzzybits

Not sure if I asked you before but do you have a low cost spay/neuter place there? We have one here that does it for 25 dollars.

          • greenmanTN

            We do, and it’s $45.

          • greenmanTN

$45 is still a lot better than the $250 per I paid for the 1st 4!

          • fuzzybits

            Yikes!

        • djcoastermark

The making money part is the perk, a nice bonus. What we made bought us a nice dinner out and the ability to buy a few more pieces of junk to put back into the house, that ultimately, will be put out in another garage sale in a few years. Oh well, recycling I guess.

        • Lars Littlefield

I believe Brook. and Andre were married, for two years, from 1997 1o 1998.

        • FAEN

They were married for a little bit before they split up. Then he fell for Graf at the 99 French Open and sent her a HUGE bouquet of flowers. Problem was Graf was still dating the F1 driver Michael Bartels! They soon broke up and Andre and Steffi have been together ever since.

    • Over the past year, we’ve been learning that even as the Russian bot swarms were supporting Donald’s candidacy—even dating back to the GOP primaries—they were ALSO sowing division on the progressive left.

I can’t begin to tell you how many anti-Clinton memes I heard from self-described liberals and progressives, even as it became clear Sanders could not and would not win the nomination and even afterwards when the “anybody but Clinton” thing kept going.

    • ultragreen

I suppose those ‘bots’ are also the reason that Bernie Sanders is the most popular senator in the U.S. Congress according to all major polls during the past year or so.

      • Mikey

“popularity” has nothing to do with honesty, integrity, nor effectiveness.

Sanders’ voting record speaks for itself, but apparently, no one was listening. They preferred trashing Clinton.

        • ultragreen

If you think Hillary Clinton, the flip-flopper, has more honesty and integrity than Bernie Sanders, then I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

As for Bernie Sanders voting record, it is superior to Clinton’s. Hillary Clinton voted for the War in Iraq, Bernie Sanders voted against it. Hillary Clinton voted for the Bankruptcy Law that allows banks and credit card companies to collect their debts ahead of child support payments; Bernie Sanders voted against it. Hillary Clinton voted against the Feinstein amendment that would have prohibited dropping cluster bombs near civilian populations, while Bernie Sanders voted for it.

          • Mikey

Bernie Sanders voted against gun control.

  • Lazycrockett
    • Lazycrockett
      • ultragreen

Oh well, I wouldn’t worry. If the GOP can’t pass the bill that outlaws class action lawsuits against banks and credit card companies, then the Democrats are sure to propose a bipartisan ‘compromise’ bill that gives them partially what they want. Many people haven’t figured out that compromising with Republicans means partially capitulating to their demands. And when this process is repeated across the years and decades, that means the Republicans eventually get everything that they want, and then some. This is what has been happening for the past 40 years.

The Democrats are already trying to push through Congress a ‘compromise’ health care bill that caves in to some of the GOP’s demands.

        • Talisman

Considering that ObamaCare is almost completely the same plan that was put forth by the GOP in answer to the Clinton Health plan back in the 90’s….

OT: It’s not quite good news but at least it’s not straight up bad news. Mark Zuckerberg’s PR tour has not done a thing to make people like him more.

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/alexkantrowitz/new-data-shows-mark-zuckerbergs-us-tour-isnt-helping-his?utm_term=.hqqLjLAx3#.hlrnDnqB1

“For the past 10 months, Mark Zuckerberg has crisscrossed America. His 30-state trip has been both a charm offensive and a focus group, a chance to step out of his bubble in Silicon Valley and see how different communities use Facebook. He’s toured a train yard in Nebraska, chatted with “folks” in Texas, fished in Alaska, and fed a calf in Wisconsin, all while sharing finely crafted updates with his 97 million Facebook followers.

The campaign-style tour has generated speculation Zuckerberg might run for president in 2020 (he told BuzzFeed News he’s not planning on it). But it hasn’t done much to improve the public’s perception of him, according to new data obtained by BuzzFeed News.

Zuckerberg’s Q Score, a measure of how public figures are regarded by the public, has not changed significantly since January 2016, according to Henry Schafer, executive vice president at Marketing Evaluations, Inc., which measures Q Scores.”

Wasn’t there a Hispanic guy, too?

Also, Boogie Nights was actually his most daring and artistically creative movie. For which I credit the director, although I did feel it needed more half-naked William H. Macy.

I kind of have a thing for William H. Macy. I can’t explain why.

Regardless. Wahlberg’s shallow acting worked in that movie because, ultimately, it was demonstrating that the entirety of Diggler’s fame was shallow and pedantic. It was a perfect casting move.

OT: Soap wrapping in cigar bands, step 2. Another fifty went onto the storage racks this evening. And I have a slight headache from all the scents, as usual. Most notably, lavender, which I do not tolerate very well.

Also, I over-produced severely. We not only have Christmas gifts, but gifts for at least a year, and at least a year of household usage. And considering that my husband likes his fifty minute showers using a quarter bar a day, that’s saying something.

    • Lazycrockett

      50 minutes? how pruney.

      • Treant

Tell me about it. I’m in and out in 20 minutes flat, and that includes brushing my teeth and shaving. Commercial soap bars used to last me 2 weeks. My own soap lasts more like 3 to 4 weeks, depending on the recipe. He can go through my hardest, most durable, best-aged soap in 4 days.

        • Lazycrockett

Isn’t that a bitch on his skin?

          • Treant

Not with my stuff, no. I always leave some oils unreacted so it’s lye-light, the pH is a bit lower, and it doesn’t strip the skin. My summer formula is reasonably cleansing. My winter formula is very lotion-like. You get clean, but you don’t feel dried out.

If you did that with some commercial crap soap like Irish Spring, you’d seriously dry out your hide.

          • Lazycrockett

I was talking more of water exposure than soap, especially during winter months.

          • Treant

I never found it such. 🙂 Really, it’s not the water that does you in, it’s the strength of the surfactants used in the bars. Mine vary from moderate to low strength.

        • Snarkaholic

          Tripled milled?

          • Treant

            Technically? No, single-pass cold process.

But really, milling is only an issue with machined soap and any soap, left to cure for long enough, will become rock solid with minimal water, developed lather, and very high durability. (What I’m saying here is that triple milling is over-rated when working with an artisan soap maker).

I let Castile soap cure for a minimum of 1 year. Two is better. Lard and tallow are fine at 4 weeks, but I strongly prefer to cure them for 8-12 weeks minimum as the bar durability goes way up and water levels go way down.

          • Snarkaholic

            Thanks for the education.
Does that also work for glycerin soap (the translucent kind)? I use it in the kitchen, and the bars get squishy/don’t last long; so I’ve toyed with the idea of making my own.

          • Treant

Alas, no, and I do like the stuff (I do make that for fun sometimes as I can get really bright colors that are at least semi-transparent). That soap was made from scratch like so: https://www.bulkapothecary.com/blog/soap-recipes/how-do-you-make-melt-and-pour-soap-base-from-scratch/

Overall, 25% of the soap weight is propylene glycol (very water soluble, humectant) and glycerin (very water soluble, humectant). Plus nearly 20% sorbitol (extremely water soluble). So it dissolves easily, gets gloopy, dries slowly, and doesn’t last long.

Curing it can make it a little harder–some of the oldest of my glycerin soap isn’t that bad as long as I keep it on a soap dish that has a drain. But it’s no great shakes compared to even the worst-cured cold or hot process soap.

If you want to get a basic MP base, WSP tends to be the cheapest that offers Crafter’s Choice (the best I’ve found, and it doesn’t smell, it’s reasonably clear, and it’s easy to work with): http://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/soap-making-supplies/melt-pour-soap-base/10-pounds-block-soap.aspx

At $2.85 per pound (not including shipping, which is horrid), bars work out to $0.71 cents each, plus scent and color if you choose to use it.

Making MP soap is a snap. Melt in microwave, add a bit of color, some scent, and pour into a mold. Let cool and harden, remove from mold, use. You don’t have to handle lye–but take care as when melted it can burn, and soap sticks, so it’ll really burn you.

My niece is getting several bars of glycerin soap this Christmas as she won’t use anything that isn’t vegan. My youngest niece is getting several bars of glycerin soap because I can color it brightly with minimal dye and it molds easily to fun shapes.

          • Snarkaholic

Thanks for taking the time to explain.

      • AJ Drew

Um hmm. 50 minutes… he must be very very clean, multiple times over. That must be some awesome soap, indeed.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I heard you can use soap in keeping pests away from plants.

      • Treant

You can, some. And it’s safe to water in as well, and the soap helps increase the wetness of the water.

I use sodium lauryl sulfate (a strong surfactant) on the lawn and gardens regularly in modest amounts.

    • AJ Drew

      @greenmanTN is planning a yard sale… ?

      • Treant

I did that once, actually, just to see if I could sell this stuff.

I got cleaned out in 2 hours, except for some very odd specialty bars that I tossed in to see if there would be any interest.

I’ve always heard that many people don’t like animal fats. You sure couldn’t tell that from the crew around the table. They were like vultures and I thought it was going to come to blows over the last bar of honey Castille.

    • Snarkaholic

Have you considered selling the extra bars on Etsy?

      • Treant

I could, but I’d need insurance. Or at least it’s a really, really good idea, plus an LLC just in case…

Besides, we’ll use them. And it simply means I expand the circle who get soap.

The best revenge is if the election is given to some other than Putin or shown to have been won by someone other than Putin.

Russia just completed a new internet link to North Korea. Perhaps Mr Kim is testing out the bandwidth.

Great you can tell this story since the man he is accusing isn’t alive to defend himself.

    • Treant

Kevin Sore Blow. Honestly, one tolerable role and after that, a descent into insanity and “christian” movies. Blech.

      • JCF

The “lesbian show”, Xena, blew his show out of the water…and Sorbo’s been a wingnut ever since (just my theory).

        • Treant

You’re probably right. I always liked Xena far better than Hercules. Herc was so…testosterone-laden. Xena had a better sense of humor, too.

    • Cuberly Deux

But the account, sure sounds like a wacked out fashion designer used to getting what they want….and swooping in to catch the vulnerable.

      That’s messed up.

    • Reality.Bites

And the accuser is a well-known homophobe

    • Tulle Christensen

Yea, but having lived in South Florida and from hearing things there it would not surprise me if it was true

OT: I’m really tired of idiot parents giving weapons to their kids. Also, Colin Kaepernick kneeling has never gotten a ten year old killed yet more handwringing and wailing by idiots is done over that than kids killing kids with crap their parents thought was totes cool.

“A 13-year-old boy is in custody after fatally shooting his 10-year-old friend, Austin Almanza, with a crossbow in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, authorities said Monday.

The teen was playing with Austin and Austin’s 8-year-old brother, Ayden, in a treehouse in a vacant lot on Saturday, when the three got into a disagreement, Lincoln County Sheriff Charlie Dougherty said at a news conference.

The 13-year-old then fired an arrow with his crossbow that entered Austin’s
midsection, traveled through his body, and exited on the other side. The arrow then got stuck in Ayden’s arm, who was standing behind his brother.

Austin was pronounced dead at the scene. Ayden was released from the hospital Sunday afternoon and was at home, Dougherty said, adding that he was not badly hurt and he would likely make a “full recovery.”

Authorities did not release the 13-year-old suspect’s name because he is a juvenile. He is being held at a juvenile detention center, Dougherty said.

The sheriff said that the crossbow appeared to belong to the suspect whose mother had given it to him.”

An acquaintance of mine has one for hunting. Those can kill deer–easily–at a good distance, so a human child several feet away is certainly going to at least be in serious trouble…

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

Yeah, the victims’ parents should fucking bankrupt them for that.

    • MBear

When i was a kid, my best friend was shot and killed by the neighborhood bullies “playing ” with their dad’s gun.

I was planning on going to the park with him that day but had to stay home doing chores. I heard the gunshot.

      • greenmanTN

Any punishment for them? If not, how were they effected, if at all?

        • MBear

          This was the early 70s.
          No punishment.
Dont know how they were affected, we went to different schools (me: private schools)

  • Gerald Parks

    Yeah!!!!!!
    Lets here from Mr Kaepernick!

Colin Kaepernick Did Not Vote so he silenced his most relevant voice.

        Bull.

            Did you need a gratuity?
            Or just want one?

          • LesbianTippingHabits

The only thing I want is that people concerned about the future of their communities, states, and country, actually Do Something about it – Vote!

Hillary Rodham Clinton writes in her book, What Happened, that lots of younger adults are coming up to her to apologize for not voting.

Your vote is your voice, but only if you use it. Trumpets certainly did.

      • Gerald Parks

        Really???
        Did you vote?
        Who knows?
        Who cares?
Granted WE should vote!!!! I’d go so far as to say … We MUST vote!!!!!
The point IS his BOOK will be the 1st time for most Americans to hear his thoughts and rational for the public ACTIONS he has taken without the filter of others viewpoint or opinion of his actions and motives!
THAT is a rare opportunity for most Americans! Especially an African-American male in 21st Century America!

        • LesbianTippingHabits

Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-GA):

Register and vote. People died so you can vote.

          • Gerald Parks

Soooo …you choose to ignore …”Granted WE should vote!!!! I’d go so far as to say … We MUST vote!!!!!”
Why would you purposely MISS the point and attempt to denigrate Mr Kaepernick who was exercising HIS civic duty in a way you nor I would?
HIS book WILL be read by many who haven’t heard his side of the issue.
NOBODY knows if you or I voted and don’t care …nor would they read OUR book!
