GEORGIA: GOP State Rep Defends Her Suggestion To Quarantine HIV+ People: I Was Just Being Provocative

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports:

Georgia Rep. Betty Price said her comments on people with HIV that ignited a national firestorm this week were “taken completely out of context.” Price, the wife of former U.S. health secretary Tom Price, was in a study committee Tuesday when she asked a state health official whether people with HIV could legally be quarantined.

Price said she was just being “provocative.” She said she is not in favor of a quarantine but made the “rhetorical” statement because she was sad and troubled that “too many of our fellow citizens who have HIV are not compliant.”

Here’s that “out of context” quote:

“I don’t want to say the quarantine word, but I guess I just said it. Is there an ability, since I would guess that public dollars are expended heavily in prophylaxis and treatment of this condition? So we have a public interest in curtailing the spread. What would you advise or are there any methods legally that we could do that would curtail the spread?”

“It seems to me it’s almost frightening, the number of people who are living that are potentially carriers. Well they are carriers, with the potential to spread, whereas in the past they died more readily and then at that point they are not posing a risk. So we’ve got a huge population posing a risk if they are not in treatment.”

Price is a medical doctor and is married to former HHS Secretary Tom Price, who resigned last month after a private jet scandal.

Is it too early in the morning to call someone a bitch?

    • JAKvirginia

      Never.

      • Todd N. Law

Or, a misanthropic piece of garbage. Because, well, swearing isn’t very lady-like and I wouldn’t want to offend the bitch.

      No, it is not.

    • La Cieca

Not when the “c” word is more appropriate.

Not comfortable with the demonization of female genitalia. “Canker sore” would fit just as well.

I hope in the process of making yourself clear you used the same words, squalid and malicious.

i confirm that I did use those words. And I did sign my name .

There was a reporter who did basically that, but was unable to obtain transcripts. The gist is that he was an average student (not adequate to move on to an MBA) who was only interested in those courses directly tied to real estate negotiations. Also– he never had a second date with anyone at the school, and expressed no opinion about the (for the first time in his life and the school’s life) presence of female classmates, or any opinions about the war (out of which school was keeping him) despite his military school background the visible presence of the First Troop Philadelphia Cavalry.

        “Terrifying” …

  • vorpal 😼

“What would you advise or are there any methods legally that we could do that would curtail the spread?”

Here’s something actual helpful instead of a foray into rampant idiocy:
Make PrEP affordable and available to many more people for starters?

    • Chucktech

That would mean making healthcare available to more people. Can’t have that…

      • vorpal 😼

Exactly. And if employers are allowed to deny women contraceptive medication on the grounds of religious idiocy, it’s not going to be long before employers are allowed to deny gay men HIV treatment medication and PrEP on the grounds of religious idiocy.

        • clay

Expect HPV vaccine to show up on that list, as well.

    • RMJ

Image the outrage if we said:

“So we have a public interest in curtailing the spread. What would you advise or are there any methods legally that we could do that would curtail the spread of Christianity?”

“It seems to me it’s almost frightening, the number of people who are living that are potentially carriers. Well they are carriers, with the potential to spread, whereas in the past they died more readily by being fed to the lions and then at that point they are not posing a risk. So we’ve got a huge population posing a risk if they are not dead.”

I got some provocative for you bitch!

      • RoFaWh

I would approve of outlawing the bible, including mere possession of a copy. Burn them.

        • RMJ

Isn’t it interesting in the movie “The book of Eli” the trailer describes the movie as “A post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.”

But the entire premise of the movie is that Eli arrives in a ramshackle town rebuilt and overseen by Carnegie (Gary Oldman). Carnegie dreams of building more towns and of controlling the people by using the power of a certain book.

The Bible and most religious texts can be summed up similar to that, they promise the secrets to saving humankind but ultimately are only a means of controlling the people. And a VERY successful means of control I might add. I’m paraphrasing the original I read somewhere:

“There is no atrocity, nor evil deed committed with such glee as those committed in the name of one’s religion”

    • Ninja0980

Not to mention better sex education.

      • vorpal 😼

Agreed. The Christian “right” acts like teaching children about sex – let alone anal sex, which plenty of heterosexuals do and is not the “homosex sin” they think it exclusively is – is a bad thing, but their kids ARE engaging in these activities. They’re horny pre-teens / teens and you might want them to wait until heterosexual marriage, but did YOU, heterosexual parents? Probably not, and they’re almost certainly not going to.

Nobody is made worse for learning how to do these activities safely.

Ignorance, on the other hand, is what causes people to unknowingly engage in stupid and harmful activities.

        • RoFaWh

It’s the old old problem of someone ignoring human nature while spinning their totalitarian fantasies.

Much like tax laws: I’ve seen someone with important influence over them completely ignore the not-so-minor detail that no matter how well crafted those laws are, people will find the loopholes and exploit them to the max.

    • zhera

Putting money into reasearch and finding a vaccine would be nice. And PrEP in the meantime. Sex education. Free condoms at all clinics, hospitals, and doctors.

      • RoFaWh

Free condoms in all high schools, both junior and senior if the distinction is made. In 4-4-4 systems, middle schools would be included.

    Right. “Provocative”.

She should be quarantined and her hairdresser too!

    • Buford

That’s bad, but the MOST disturbing part is their willingness to brainstorm such drastic measures in the interest of public safety regarding the spread of HIV when they otherwise refuse to even allow ANY discussion on the epic US public safety crisis of ‘guns’.

In the US, guns kill 3x the number of people who die from HIV/AIDS. So while I generally encourage bold ideas in the interest of public safety, the spread of HIV is not where the bold action is needed.

    • Sporkfighter

Cut her some slack. All she meant was that the dead are not at risk of dying. Surely we can agree that eliminating the risk of death among our HIV brothers and sisters is a good thing, right?

  • Acronym Jim

“whereas in the past they died more readily and then at that point they are not posing a risk.”

And yet, when we were “dying more readily,” those living with HIV were posing MORE of a risk. With treatment and living longer with an undetectable viral load, those living with HIV pose much less of a “risk” than in those halcyon days of ignoring the problem in the hopes that we would all die out. In fact, that risk is getting closer and closer to nil every week.

The AMA should revoke her medical degree.

I usually clean the veg garden in the fall as I use it to burn 8.4 billion leaves. The flower gardens I leave to provide habitat for winter residents.
Expecting a hard freeze later this week, so I dug up and potted one of my Nerium oleanders.

        • Treant

I mow all the leaves into the lawn (it’s good organic material), but…2000 square feet of dead plant is a bit much even for me. 🙂 I’ll leave some for winter interest and I shake off all the seeds into the gardens for the birds (most are tropical or sub-tropical and the seed won’t survive the winter).

I also pot things up! I have two orange, one yellow, and one hybrid orange-yellow marigold potted to bring indoors. They were September-sprouting volunteers. I also added an ageratum, and a dwarf zinnia to the mix.

They should bloom indoors until January or so.

I need to mow, but….. I want the wind to scour the leaves away first 🙂

Yikes. Aren’t you in Des Moines? I thought you were suffering from a drought? Hmmm.

        • Ragnar Lothbrok

No, I am in the ” Promised Land ” between DSM and Omaha.

( Promise of death by boredom )

The drought is / was South of DSM . We were borderline drought mid summer, but that changed with a 6 inch rain in August and a very wet fall.
Harvest is a week or 2 behind.

          • Joe in PA

I just re-read you comment…a 6 inch rain? Yikes, and that was without a hurricane behind it. Wow.

    https://www.statnews.com/2017/10/21/georgia-lawmaker-wife-tom-price-denies-advocating-quarantine-hiv-patients/

But she then blames people on HIV treatment for not taking it properly, but quotes no evidence to show this is even a problem in Georgia:

‘Price said she is not in favor of a quarantine but made the “rhetorical” statement because she was troubled that “too many of our fellow citizens who have HIV are not compliant with the effective treatment of this now chronic disease.”

    • RoFaWh

      She’s just making shit up.

  • This is my state rep (ugh), and I sent several messages to her office letting her know what I think of all this.

    • SoCalGal20

When is she up for reelection? Does she have an opponent?

      • Next year, since it’s the state house. I don’t know if she has an opponent yet (she didn’t last November), but if she does, I will support them and give them money to help get her out of the Georgia House of Reps.

        • SoCalGal20

Good! I hope somebody is running against her!

  • SoCalGal20

So with a rise of other communicable diseases like TB, should all those people also be in quarantine? GA had one of the higher per capita rates of TB in 2015.

  • aagold76 .

  • DaddyRay

But remember folks: Both parties are the same

  • Lawerence Collins

No, you were feeding the GOP thugs so called Christian Right base. With new ways of tormenting hiv positive people

  • fuow

Yup, this is the government we get when we stay home or vote ‘Green’ to protest Democrats not being perfect.
    What a fucking C*NT.
*The asterisk is because some unique snowflakes around here object to calling people by their proper name.

    • DaddyRay

What do we call her husband

      • fuow

I’d rather not call him at all. He turned the Hippocratic Oath into the Hypocritical Oath.

    • DaddyRay

While those Democrats agreed with their positions 99.9% of the time it was that .1% that was just so important that they had to teach the Democratic Party a lesson

      • fuow

Yup. We Democrats fall in love.
        Rethuglicans fall in line.
Until we learn that, we will continue to win ‘moral’ victories all the way to the new Auschwitz Anlage.

  • Steverino

What she calls “provocative,” I call a cunning stunt.

    • fuow

I love what you did. See You Next Tuesday!

    • Treant

Is she short enough to call a cunning runt?

      • Steverino

If she runs for office again…

  • bambinoitaliano
  • Chucktech

“I Was Just Being Provocative Christian.”

  • realspear

So is “provocative” an excuse for any outrageous bigotry?

    • MBear

It’s a word most of her constituents wont understand

    • Treant

Yes. Any threat or insult is perfectly OK as long as you say it’s “provocative” or “a joke” afterward. At some companies and in some Republican legislatures, you can even use that as an excuse for assault.

At one company I worked at, a 300-pound supervisor body-slamming a 150-pound employee into a desk or wall was called “a joke” and excused by HR.

      • RoFaWh

Did you show them the bills for necessary medical treatment afterwards?

    • Lars Littlefield

These days it appears so. Trump isn’t really president. He’s just being provocative.

BTW: Cative is a suburb outside of Provo, Ut.

      • RoFaWh

So she (and her hubby) are likely momos.

  • Mickey Bitsko
  • -M-

Well she has the willful ignorance and total lack of morals to take her husband’s former position in the Drumpf maladministration.

  • Lars Littlefield

Whereas I miss those day in the middle ages when people like her were stripped naked and hung in public by their labia majori, left swinging in the wind to die until they dried into jerky for being a witch. Then at that point they did not pose a risk to others for being a witch. Good times . . . good times . . . .

  • SoCalGal20

So San Diego is in the midst of a Hep A epidemic, centered on the homeless community. You know what they doing? They’re not quarantining people. The Health Department is going out into the field, locating vulnerable people and vaccinating and educating them. It’s putting wash stations in parks and other areas where infected people might frequent and others could be exposed. It’s literally powerwashing streets with a bleach solution. It’s talking to other municipalities like Los Angeles to find out how they have combated outbreaks. There has been some criticism that they were slow to reapond and that they don’t have enough personnel to respond adequately to the epidemic but they’re not calling to quarantine people or round up the homeless.

    http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-hepatitis-outbreak-20171017-story.html

    • sdnative1958

We knew about the issue in March but held off on getting real about it ’til after the tourist season (and ComicCon don’t’cha know) was over.

      http://www.voiceofsandiego.org/topics/government/months-of-emails-then-a-mad-scramble-how-the-hepatitis-a-crisis-unfolded-behind-the-scenes/

      • SoCalGal20

The outbreak actually started last November. So yeah…not saying the city and Health Dept were doing everything they could have but they are on it now. The last time I was at Balboa Park I saw the wash stations (which I think are a great idea for parks and public areas in general tbh).

        • MBear

Was just in Balboa Park yesterday. Wash stations: great! White str8 obvs non-homeless guys who dont wash their hands after using the restroom: nasty

    • Lars Littlefield

That is very interesting. SLC is working hard at keeping an outbreak spreading among the homeless who gather around the Rio Grande business district and park. Locals are incensed that the Dept of Health is setting up a shelter specifically for those suffering from the disease. Mormons are obviously in line with Mrs. Price’s thinking. Bleach!

    • BudClark

I have said for YEARS that this is EXACTLY what happens when you DON’T treat the poor and the homeless. South of Market in San Diego is a CESSPOOL, because the homeless have been driven OUT of the rest of the county.

  • Jim Maloney

She looks like a happy camper camping like most with her mindset do. (I’m just being provocative.)

  • Barry William Teske

    Oh look!
    Incitefulness.
    In a kind of sentence.
    Such potential.
    Now, about those foot prints…

  • JAKvirginia

Oh, I don’t know, sweetie. Maybe you should do some research before you open your piehole. Then you might discover that when AIDS came to America we had a President (Raygun) who didn’t care. Start there, hmmm?

  • JWC

knowing the administration she works in what an asshole her husbands is Lets just say I highly question her statemeny that she she was misquotes BULLSHIT

  • Mike

Oh Betty. She doesn’t know what quarantine means. Or what “carrier” means. Or how HIV is spread or who can spread it. Or that you can’t sentence people to life in prison for having been infected by a virus. And she comes up with her insights as her political team works to deny “treatment” to as many people as they possibly can.

Poor, slow, dimwitted Betty. Even if she were to start reading now, she’d never catch up.

  • IamSmartypants

She wasn’t being provocative, she was testing the waters to gauge the public reaction. We have to be constantly vigilant against this sort nonsense or the next step will be drawing up plans for camps — “Just to be provocative.”

  • SFBruce

She talks about the responsibility of those with hiv to seek treatment, but nothing about the responsibility of Alabama to ensure that everyone, including those with hiv, has access to affordable, adequate health care.

    • -M-

Georgia has the misfortune of her presence.

  • Frank McCormick

In my mind, she’s not really a medical doctor (although she is an MD). She is an anesthesiologist. Someone who’s job is to know drugs and never have to talk to her patients.

    • Michael McReavy

I suppose any medical specialist could perform their duties in a mechanistic way, having minimal interaction with their patient. Jeepers, I recently saw an article by a psychiatrist who wanted education in that field to dispense with training in psychotherapy and put more emphasis on learning about drugs!

I’ve had a couple major surgeries and in each case, there was a brief meeting with the anesthesiologist. Price really is a medical doctor but she’s also an asshole. Simple as that.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’m surprised some “undesirable” people didn’t die on the operating table because of her. Or maybe there were some we don’t know about.

  • j.martindale

The fact that a doctor doesn’t realize that the people who receive treatment are largely NOT the people who are transmitting the disease to newly infected individuals shows she has NO BUSINESS in the public health field. She is a dumb bitch, on top of being a goddamn heartless bitch. But she is a f*cking Repuglican, which says it all.

    • RoFaWh

Her medical training apparently didn’t include a segment on epidemiology. That or it had one but she learned nothing in it.

      • clay

It would have required a segment on professional development and life-long learning, in which she also learned nothing.

Someone tell this bitch that a good way to fix the problem of out of control health care costs is to regulate big Pharma.

  • Karl Dubhe

I was willing to give her the bennie of the doubt…

Why? I’ve far too much grey hair to be so fucking naive. Grrrrr.

She is taking a page out of Herr Drumpf’s book, as he claims “it was just a joke”!!! May that Witch get stuck by an infected needle!!!

  • DaveMiller135

She should feel free to supply the context she feels is missing. But if I’m to take this non-apology seriously, she needs to give specifics about her personal actions towards prevention and stigma-reduction. Otherwise, she needs to take a moment and die more readily.

Poor baby. Bigot got caught being a bigot. If only they had people in positions of power to help them overcome all the societal oppression they face. Repulsive human being!

    • RoFaWh

What they really want is the power to prevent the press and media from reporting such insanity. Trump’s working on it.

  • j.martindale

She wasn’t being provocative. She was demonstrating the universal contempt that repuglicans have for gay people.

  • Bad Tom

“too many of our fellow citizens who have HIV are not compliant.”

    GOP State Rep Betty Price

Non-compliant patients are not expending prophylaxis dollars, private or public. THAT IS THE PROBLEM, you fool!

    • RoFaWh

When I had my first appointment with my present doctor as a new patient over thirty years ago, I asked him “I’m gay, and one of the specific hazards of being gay is anal gonorrhea. How would you test for that?”

I later confessed to him I didn’t give a damn about the ostensible point of my question; I was just testing him to see if he had any homophobic tendencies.

He passed with flying colors and has been my GP for a very long time now.

  • Hue-Man

If this Republican mouthpiece says that HIV+ people should be quarantined, you know that concentration camps are already being constructed and the Log Cabin Republicans are deciding what font to use on the welcome signs.
    Arbeit macht frei

    • GanymedeRenard

I wonder if they’re already manufacturing the pink triangles.

      • lenvus

No, because they refuse to remember the old adage, “History Repeats Itself.” The Log Cabin Republicans still believe its cool and hip to appear at pride parades to say, they too, still support the LGBTQ community. No, they are constructing rainbow triangles. They have to keep their hatred “up with the times,” you know…

  • Halou

So we have a public interest in curtailing the spread. What would you advise or are there any methods legally that we could do that would curtail the spread?”

One idea would be to ignore the lobbying of religious institutions that have, since the very beginning of HIV & AIDS tried to cut research funding, shut down any and all awareness campaigns and have targeted clinics providing care, support, advice and medication to those who need it.

Don’t quarantine gays, quarantine the church.

There was a phrase that was popular during the height of the AIDS/HIV pandemic, among “good Christian folk” like her. “The up side of AIDS is it is killing all the right people.” The folks that should be quarantined are people like her, so their hate and false Christianity can be wiped of the face of the earth.

  • Statistics Palin

  • fuzzybits

We hear you the first time you lying asswipe.

  • BuffaloDan

She asks for a “quarantine,” which is _literally_ a forty day period until a disease (originally, the Black Plague) manifests. So many individuals have been living with HIV and other health issues for years, and overcoming them for decades, despite individuals like her. (Maybe the same with diabetes and other chronic conditions; they couldn’t be ameliorated in the past, but we can “manage” many of these illnesses now — again, despite, individuals like her. Stupid science! It costs so much, right?)

Is it forty days from the manifestation of the illness — or forty days after one admits it? Oh, Rep. Price, you really don’t know what words mean, do you? If it helps, I know what feckless incompetence means. Want me to explain it for you?

I’d like to talk about how long that I think right-wing fascists should be “quarantined.” Let’s talk!

  • Vista-Cruiser

This was a calculated political maneuver to boost her name recognition and conservative bona fides. She knows that the political winds are blowing more and more toward fascism. This being Georgia, don’t be surprised to see her win a seat in the US Congress using this platform.

      I have 2 guesses.

  • Andymac3

Is it really a surprise that former HHS Secretary and total elitist shit head grifter Tom Price is married to a psychopathic woman who thinks gay people should be treated like cattle and deserve to die sooner than later? She actually said “My thinking sometimes goes in strange directions, but before you proceed if you wouldn’t mind commenting on the surveillance of partners, tracking of contacts, that sort of thing. What are we legally able to do (with gays)?”

And why isn’t hubby in jail for insider trading and misusing $1million of tax payers money for trips to his own properties and lunches with family and friends. Do these people pay for anything?

The other definition? No, you’re just showing what a couple of shitheads you and your creepy husband are.

    • Snarkaholic

She’s just pissed because her gay stylist (intentionally and gleefully) keeps giving her that atrocious haircut.

  • Ann Kah

That wasn’t “provocative”. That was asinine. “Provocative” would be to make reasonable suggestions that might actually succeed and be effective, and that would make others think in more depth about how to implement those suggestions. You wouldn’t know “provocative” if it snuggled up on your pillow tonight.

  • 2guysnamedjoe

  • seant426

More people per annum die from pneumonia, so let’s quarantine them, you dumb bitch.

  • Nick

I wrote her. Here was her response:

    Representative Price,

You’re a vulgar person and a terrible liar. The fact that you hold a medical degree and don’t know how HIV is being prevented (PrEP, Condoms, Education) is vile.

Your statements were not “provocative.” There is nothing about you that is provocative. You’re just an awful human being.

    Sincerely,

    ——————————————————-

Why have the new cases each year not decreased? That is the issue.

After 30+ years, it would be great if this virus could be eradicated.

It serves no purpose to make me the story. We have a serious public health issue that does not seem to be going away.

    Rep. Betty Price, M.D. (48)

    ———————————————————–

You ARE the story because you are a physician.

The number of cases HAS decreased – 10% from 2010 to 2014, and with drugs like PrEP (Truvada), you can expect that number to decrease further and more rapidly.

Yes, it would be great if the virus would have been eradicated. You want to know why it wasn’t? Because Reagan didn’t have the balls to say AIDS during his presidency until it was too late. Because people like you made this a “gay” disease and god knows, you wouldn’t want to help the faggots. Because people like you continue to treat this disease like a joke and a punchline.

You ARE the story because you should know better and you are expected to act intelligently. We have had a serious health issue for 30 years and you still treat it like the people suffering from it have done something wrong. Why didn’t you propose that cancer victims from smoking or alcoholics be quarantined?

You ARE the story. You MADE yourself the story. And until YOU do something about it, it’s not going to go away.

    Sincerely,

    Nickolas Vannello

I was aghast when I first read this, but I guess I shouldn’t be. These people have been having their hatred of anyone “different” (read: non-white, non-male, and/or non-allegedly heterosexual) through 8 years of an articulate, thoughtful, HUMAN (but black) president and his family and administration. And marriage equality. Poor little things, feeling their power dwindling away. Easier to hate and rail against something than to fix it for all. Betty Price should remember that 100 years ago, she couldn’t own property, vote or get a divorce without a man’s permission.
