REPORT: Trump Promises To Pay Russia-Related Legal Bills For White House Staff And Campaign Associates

Yet another big scoop from Axios:

President Trump has promised to spend at least $430,000 of his own money to defray legal costs incurred by campaign associates and White House staff due to the Russia investigations, a White House official tells Axios.

The Republican National Committee has paid roughly $430,000 to lawyers representing the president and his eldest son, Don Jr. A White House official told me Trump will not be reimbursing the RNC for these costs. However, the White House official says he has pledged to spend the same amount, from his personal finances, “to defray the costs of legal fees for his associates, including former and current White House aides.”

The president and his legal team haven’t announced the mechanism to make these payments. The arrangement raises a number of questions, none of which the White House official answered. The official said: “We’re working on appropriate legal and ethical approval” — and said the president hasn’t ruled out spending more of his own money on these legal fees.

Pthbbbbbbtt (directed to Putin, not to you)!

    • Adam King

Well, we already know they’re fools.

  • Wynter Marie Starr

I’ll believe it when we see it. Until then, we all know he’ll be using campaign money to pay off his and others’ debts. Likely for them to keep their mouths shut about his traitorous actions.

    • This is probably why he’s (and his attys) are making this otherwise empty gesture: So people stop noticing the Republican Party has been and will continue to pay the legal bills for ALL of the Trumps. Including those who never had any role in the campaign or administration, like Eric & Lara.

    • bkmn

Didn’t he use ‘campaign funds’ to cover that $25,000 check he promised to a dead veteran’s father that was only sent after the father told the story about the promise?

      • Wynter Marie Starr

I honestly don’t know. But anything this amoral fucktard does isn’t a surprise at this point. If you want to study an artist, you must study all his work. Same goes for a con man.

    • Scott MB

He will probably not run in 2020 at the last minute and screw the RNC and his donars out of millions of dollars.

      • Joe in PA

Dang, I’m sure hoping he’ll be long gone by that time. 🙁

It’s going to by some unforeseen circumstances turn out to have legal barriers that unfortunately prevent him from keeping this promise, to his everlasting regret. But he meant well, and deserves praise for his generosity and courage. Obama, after all, never offered to pay the legal fees for his co-conspirators loyal staff.

      • Joe in PA

        Bwahahahaha.

      • RoFaWh

Trump isn’t smart enough to construct sentences such as yours.

        • Adam King

He has people. The best people.

      • popebuck1

That was a mere technicality, since Obama’s administration was SO corrupt they managed never to get indicted for anything.

  • bkmn
    • DaddyRay

Beat me to it, that was my first thought

  • Bob Conti

Is it a gift for the receivers, or taxable income? All signs point to taxable income, so they get legal fees on the one hand taken care of by a third party, but they’re stuck with having to pay taxes on it and it could even push them into a higher income bracket. I’ll have a double Schadenfreude on the rocks please.

    • Scott MB

Yes it would be taxable income. A non-relative can’t give a tax free gift to someone they are not related to. But I am sure the people he is giving it too, which he has no money to speak of anyway since he is out of his busimess, make enough to pay little if nothing in taxes on it.

  • Scott MB

Problem is he doesn’t have any of “his own money.” His money is all in his businesses which he should have zero access to which means he has zero access to the money. If his businesses pay for legal fees on his behalf then that could be a violation of the emoluments clause.

    • Adam King

But think how clean and spring-fresh all those rubles will be after the spin cycle.

      • Phil2u

wash, rinse, repeat = c;lean money

    • Phil2u

…”emoluments clause” has too many syllables for Trump to understand, therefore, he chooses to ignore it.

      • eyefidelity

He’ll need to spend more time on the golf course to generate more emoluments.

    • thatotherjean

“Should have” are the operative words in that second sentence. Who knows what he has access to, and the party in the majority in Congress doesn’t seem to care. Trump and his family have made a joke of the emoluments clauses of the Constitution.

    • John30013

Not to mention the recent report in Forbes (I believe) that estimates Trump’s businesses lost $600 million last year.

Nor, as we all know, is Trump known for keeping such promises. Anyone who puts their trust in Trump is getting exactly what they deserve.

      • Randy503

Yup — he’ll screw them all if he gets mad at them or the situation, leaving them all with high legal bills. Which means the lawyers won’t get paid in the end. That’s probably one reason they had difficulty finding good lawyers.

And seriously, what else can he say? If he didn’t agree to pay their fees upfront, they would likely turn just to have the charges dropped and then spill the beans. They would have no choice because who is going pay $200,000 in legal bills? They are suckers if they think he will pay for them defending him and themselves.

He’ll pay for himself and his sons, but that’s likely the extent of it.

        • John30013

He’s not even paying for Don Jr–the RNC is. Trump cares NOTHING for anyone other than himself.

    • Robincho

And Dumpy would never DREAM of violating the Emoluments Clause. You know, the one he swore under “oath” to protect…

    • band

Huh? The emoluments clause has to do with FOREIGN gifts.

  • danolgb

I think most of the comments seem to be missing the bigger picture. Trump promising to pay for Russia-related legal bills sounds like he’s knows there is something to the investigation and he’s trying to protect himself.

    • popebuck1

Or rather, desperately hoping people won’t turn on him to save their own skins. Good luck with that.

Georgia Rep. Betty Price responds to critics on HIV quarantine query
Same old out of context shit.
She said she her statement was meant to be provocative. Well bitch if you say something provocative don’t be surprised if people condemn you. You have shown your true fucking colors.

    October 21, 2017

At a House Legislative Study Committee meeting this past week, we were exploring the difficult question of why Georgia ranks 2nd in the nation of new cases of HIV and why too many of our fellow citizens who have HIV are not compliant with the effective treatment of this now chronic disease. This is sad and troubling because we have come so far in HIV treatment, to the point where an HIV patient receiving recommended treatment is no longer able to transmit the disease to another person. This is something to celebrate, especially in stemming the transmission from a mother to her newborn baby.

During my entire professional career as a physician, my 10+ year service on the Fulton County Health Board, and the numerous public service roles relating to healthcare and medicine in which I have served, I have always strived to preserve the health and safety of patients and the public.

I made a provocative and rhetorical comment as part of a free-flowing conversation which has been taken completely out of context. I do not support a quarantine in this public health challenge and dilemma of undertreated HIV patients. I do, however, wish to light a fire under all of us with responsibility in the public health arena – a fire that will result in resolve and commitment to ensure that all of our fellow citizens with HIV will receive, and adhere to, a treatment regimen that will enhance their quality of life and protect the health of the public.

I look forward to continuing to work with all to accomplish this goal.

    • safari

Exactly right. And he doesn’t even know it.

    • William

I could see the RNC paying their legal bills. Money coming from Trump has too many ties, if it even exists.

  • Lazycrockett
    • JT

      Get ready for prison, asshole.

      • William

Those poor inmates, having to see Dumpf in the shower.

    • Blake J Butler

Really ? i have seen multiple ones that suggested she supported sharia law, NRA ads suggesting that she was going to take peoples guns away, while having her protected by armed bodyguards.

There were so many ads that were on facebook that i lost track of, that were against hillary and their source, either as a pissed off bernie supporter or a republican voter that wasn’t with trump from the get go but voted for him anyways because of Hillary, or they wanted him from the beginning because of bullshit lies and/or wanting the world to burn.

Social media was in his favor from independent latte liberals who voted for stein or baby huey, to white trash that voted for baby huey.

    • LesbianTippingHabits

And the Russians did not prevent Hillary from visiting Wisconsin, or Michigan (other than Flint). That was Hillary’s own choice. Thank you.

      • Enough with this BS about Clinton losing WI and MI because she didn’t visit late in the campaign. That is untrue and sadly so much of the progressive left bought into it.

Russian interference was targeted at all of the swing state voters. And more importantly, Republican-caused voter suppression was identified as the main cause for Clinton’s loss there

        http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2017/10/voter-suppression-wisconsin-election-2016/

Every single damned state she was polling well ahead in—and this included WI, MI, PA, NC, OH and FL—was targeted by propaganda and every one had newly instituted voter suppression measures. Some included stringent voter ID laws, some were simply GOP state governments fucking with the polling sites.

        • Bad Tom

          Thank you.

        • Johnny Wyeknot

          Thank you

        • LesbianTippingHabits

I’ll leave sophisticated analysis of the election to others, including those who got it wrong. So much for the ‘experts,’ including those who in 2002-2003 insisted that Iraq had WMD. Or those who insisted housing was great.

It is a fact that Hillary Clinton did not visit Wisconsin and barely lost there.

Either Hillary Clinton took Wisconsin for granted or she wrote it off.

Her decision and her responsibility in any case. Thank you.

  • Lazycrockett
  • ClevelandJim

I’m not understanding why these peoples’ legal fees are being paid by ANYone. No one held a gun to their heads, they made the choice to do something which now has them in trouble. They should be responsible for their own legal fees.

    • AJ Drew

They have no souls to sell, but there’s still a price… hopefully.

    • Paul

They “knew what they signed up for” /s

    • The_Wretched

Worse, paying their fees has the appearence (or actuality) of suborning their testimony or willingness to talk to the prosecutor.

  • bonerici

When Donald Trump says the “check is in the mail” you should definitely count on it . . . being an empty promise! No way is hell is Trump paying anybody’s legal fees. He’ll promise to do it of course. Anyway, there’s absolutely no conflict of interest here, just another Trumpian lie.

    • Hank

I wonder, if at any time in his life, whether Herr Drumpf EVER picked up a check to treat a NON-Family member for Dinner???? Surely someone must know!

  • Lazycrockett
    • AJ Drew

Gorsuch is an embarrassment and affront to the SC, and the backlash needs to start somewhere, but not sure “nationalmemo” which reposts vaguely sourced AltNet articles is the way to go. But, maybe… it’s gotta start somewhere, agreed.

      • SoCalGal20

The guy who put together that piece is an editor at AlterNet. Most of it was recounting things from other reliable sources. Maybe Nina Totenberg got the info directly from Kagen. She’s covered SCOTUS for years.

        • AJ Drew

Thanks. And yes, we have to start somewhere. Hopefully this will gain steam and more wide-spread coverage.

    • Phillip in L.A.

Meh. He doesn’t have to be liked by his colleagues to do damage. Agree with AJ Drew’s assessment of the source, above/below. How can Nina Totenburg possibly know ANYTHING that transpired in conference (unless Mr Gorsuch himself told her, which seems unlikely)

  • lymis

Trump has a history of not always paying his bills, but of pretty much NEVER paying them when someone crosses him, under the rhetoric of “not doing a good job.”

It’s really not hard to imagine that someone truthfully testifying about something that implicates Trump would be crossing him and disloyal, and a lawyer counseling their client to do would be “not doing a good job,” since part of their job would be to protect the person paying the bills. Even if nobody else sees it that way, Trump likely will.

It would be far cleaner for him to pay the RNC back and pay his own bills, allowing the RNC to apportion the money as they see fit.

    • thatotherjean

That is sooooooo not going to hapen! Donnie is no more likely to pay anybody back than he is to release his taxes. I doubt that he actually has the money to pay his own and his family’s legal bills.

  • safari

O/T: I quite enjoyed the first series.
    https://twitter.com/NPR/status/921856879663501312

    • Dazzer

It’s had excellent reviews – all four- or five-star. I meant to buy it this weekend, but didn’t get round to it.

      • Johnny Wyeknot

        It’s only Saturday

  • TexasBoy

I don’t doubt it. I mean to Trump RNC and his campaign funds are his to do with as he pleases.

    • The_Wretched

In most countries, campaign funds have to be spent on campaign expenses – staff, phone calls, flyers, ads etc.

      • TexasBoy

Pffffft…This isn’t “most countries” this is Trumps ‘Merika.

  • JT
  • BobSF_94117

    It’s all “campaign” funds.

  • Tempus Fuggit

Trump has promised to spend at least $430,000 of his own money

That is, taxpayer money that has become his by dint of his looting it from the treasury.

  • Dazzer

The thing is, I really want to tell all Trump supporters that all those stories about him stiffing people he owes money to and his own lawyers refusing to see him except in twos so as to have a witness… Well, that’s all fake news spread by librul media and they should trust every promise Trump makes.

By now, I’ll just laugh at their pain and incipient poverty.

  • EdA

Like he was planning to pay for his own campaign? Like he was planning on giving the $6 million to the veterans and service groups? Like he was planning on giving the $25K to the father of the dead soldier?

The master of The check is in the mail.

  • boatboy_srq

Legal fees to be reimbursed in rubles.

    • Treant

      In rubles…from the rubes…same difference.

  • narutomania

This turd “promises” a lot of things. A lot of empty, meaningless things.

  • Talisman

And then he’ll go bankrupt for the 6th time.

  • Steven B
    • Johnny Wyeknot

      Seth makes a good point.

      • Steven B

O/T but if you want to see a good point then check out this Twitter thread from yesterday.
        https://twitter.com/sethabramson/status/921573936315420672

        • CharlestonDave

Seth is notorious for his (lengthy) tweetstorms, but he’s a former prosecutor and knows whereof he tweets.

          • Steven B

I know. I follow him religiously. His tweetstorms keep me from losing my mind.

  • DumbHairyApe

Yeah, like how he paid his contractors…and prior attorneys…and charities…and anyone who’s ever though they would get a dime from Donald, and never did.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

      Just ask JMG reader Ross.

  • isthisdavid

I like to think the people close to him know him well enough to know he will never spend a dime he doesn’t have to.

  • James

Please. Like he knows the word “defray.”

  • mjsatty
  • SoCalGal20

Haha is the check in the mail?

  • fuzzybits
  • jm2

I hope they don’t hold their breathes waiting! They only turn blue & pass out from waiting! His history of things he promises is pretty poor, especially when it involves money. 😝

  • gmj
  • Barry William Teske

    Oh look!
    Promises.
That in itself should tell the citizens there might be some rigging going on.
    Did I mention track record?

  • Silver Badger

Fortunately they all know exactly how much the asshole’s word is worth.

  • ColdCountry

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Dump? Pay a bill? Someone ELSES bill? HAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • Reality.Bites

How to know you are well and truly fucked:

Trump offers to pay your legal bill.

  • Henry Auvil

Warning to staff: DO NOT think there’s a check in the mail. There NEVER is. Keep honing that resume, and hope for the best after you escape this loony bin.

    • thatotherjean

Indeed. Don’t count those chickens before they’re hatched, people–they’re most likely going to be rotten eggs.

  • kareemachan

MORE of his own money – I call flaming bullshit on this. He doesn’t pay for ANYTHING.

  • Robert Adams

Like he paid all those contractors?

“Hey, that lawyer was no good ’cause you’re goin’ to jail, so I’m not paying,”

  • BlindBill

RNC paying for Don Jr?????? why?

  • Charles Nelson

Trump doesn’t even pay his own lawyers with his own money…he has been siphoning off campaign funds.

  • When are we going to get this treasonous asshole out of the oval office?

  • Marides48

The check is in the mail (or not)?

  • Gianni

Trump’s staff should start a pool to guess when and who gets the first check. The winner gets all the checks. Just don’t try to cash them. That’ll spoil the fun mood.

  • geoffalnutt

    Hush money??

  • Jay Silversmith

Buying off the witnesses? If I were them, I wouldn’t count on don the con making good on his offer. Better to just go ahead and flip on him and repair your integrity.

  • DaveMiller135

I remember on “The West Wing,” the scandal that the President had run for election, without informing anyone of his MS. And someone advised Charlie (Dulé Hill) that if he had done absolutely nothing wrong, he would need $100K to pay for his defense. So I guess this is a fund for the first 4 who get indicted.

  • Randy503

“Dammit. I ran for president to make money, not spend it. Now I’m shelling out money to Gold star dads, legal fees, and other crap. It isn’t fair!”

  • customartist

Trump promised to pay his masons, his electricians and plumbers who worked on his numerous hotels, etc. and then he stiffed them. He promised to release his tax returns and later reneged. He said that he would “fight for” LGBT people, that he would be “better for” us than Hillary, and he waved the rainbow flag.

All lies. History has already been written on the core traits Donald Trump. The lieingist president ever.

  • Charlie In SF

    More lies; from our Liar-in-Chief

  • stanhope

Girls, wait for that check LOL. Any hooker knows get the cash up front cuz johns who grab pussy ain’t shit. LOL

  • Tor

    Trump promises….
    Not gonna happen.

  • Matt

Las Vegas have odds yet on this being yet another lie? Wait till THESE people find out “he was just joking,” or “hyperbole,” or some other BS.

  • Jim Maloney

    “promises”. Fixed.

  • JCF

You mean RUSSIA will pay Russia-related legal bills! The fake billionaire just, um, takes their deposits…
